The only reason this isn't 5 stars is the check in counter. I was trying to sign up for a new membership and kept getting told to hang on a moment so the associate could let someone and their friend sign in or answer the phone. I got bored after 7 or 8 minutes and ended up leaving. Later that night I was able to register without much wait. The machines are on good condition and it wasn't too packed. I never had to wait to use a machine. Also there were several open mirrors. Usually at a gym I find each mirror is just as occupied as the machine by someone trying to determine of their biceps is large enough to distract others from seeing their bird legs. I guess that is a long winded way of saying the gym was filled mostly with average people like myself who just want to stay healthy and possibly lose a few lb' s. I would try to pick an off hour if you need to accomplish anything at the desk, but other than that it seems like a good gym. read more

The staff is great. Usually one person at at the desk and the rest are cleaning. They all are available to answer questions and are really friendly. Most of the people are friendly who work out. Every so many hours they clean the black room and the locker rooms and bathrooms. I only wish they had some classes. But I still like working out there. read more

Terrible gym with terrible customer service. There is NO gym etiquette at all at Planet fitness. Stay away from this gym.

The overhead music is back to nightclub volume levels. Turn it down! It's obnoxious.

The good news is the sewer flies unionized, although they make more money and they are happier they're still pretty annoying when you trying to shower without touching the moldy curtain or stepping on the bandaids. I really like the people that work there but take a stroll through the area. I shall change my rating by one star because they actually listened and the showers were very clean today. read more

This was a mixed bag for me. GOOD: The location was very convenient and the facilities were new. For the most part, everything was excellent and the staff were very helpful. BAD: My biggest issue, and the manager and assistant manager will know who I am, was the policy of no jumping rope. I was in Detroit for 30 days on a special project and workout at least five days a week. However, my warm-up routine is with a jump rope. Jump ropes are neither offered, nor allowed to be used in their facilities...Total B.S. I have been going to various gyms around the United States, from Florida to Las Vegas, to California. I've been jumping rope for years to warm up and never had to go out in the parking lot to do so because you're not allowed to jump rope inside of a gym. I've been jumping rope for years to warm up and to be told that I'm not allowed to do that. Planet fitness Corporate really needs to re-examine its policy regarding a jump rope. The excuse that someone might get injured is just ridiculous. For that reason, I will not use planet fitness in the future. read more

They closed all the men's showers indefinitely. This puts a major problem in play after I already paid for the membership. They at least should give a timetable. People sign up for the full service and I need a shower before work after working out. Big thumbs down. read more

I have to sort of take away a few stars here,, just because I'm starting to get annoyed. I do frequent this spot and I know I am the Duke of this joint, but I'm starting to notice a decline here. Yes Planet Fitness has pretty much cornered the affordable gym industry. When gyms close down, their members have no choice but to come here instead. With that being said,, there's been a ton of incidents where muscle heads would come around and slams wieghts around. Now I don't know if the Lunk Alarm is broken, but I'm pretty sure front desk can hear all that stuff going on. I've been here since they opened up at 2011-2012. They weren't 24/7 then either. Jon at the front desk gets my customer service award of the day. I came with my boyfriend to sign up for a membership and I really appreciated the fact that he knew people's names who were walking in the door, joked around with the BF and he was really happy with his job. You can tell a lot about a place and a person by how well they do their job. Jon you hit it out of the park! The place was very clean, I loved the wide range of cardio machines, weights and space that was available. I didn't feel intimidated, everyone was pretty friendly and I even saw some people just high fiving each other for completing sets. Been going to this gym for quite awhile and it is the same. They have changed it up to keep up with the trends and modernization. The gym has everything you need to weights, machines, and treadmills. It of course get busy from 5pm till 7pm because people are getting out of work. So i would avoid working out if you are trying to get a quick workout in. The only reason I did not give it the full 5 stars is that I have been to other new pf and they were better maintained with the locker room not smelling like a sweaty balls. Every planet fitness I have been to literally have such friendly and nice employees but... THIS ONE does not. Justine which I'm assuming only works night shift (because that's when I go), has the WORST attitude I've came across and it's very distasteful having to interact with her. I really like this gym. It's very clean and during the times I am here the the staff are friendly, helpful if you have questions and are always cleaning the machines! I have the $20 a month black card membership and like knowing when I finish my workout I can get into a massage chair, tanning bed or use the hydro massage chairs! What I enjoy is that I opted for a black membership which means I can tan for free (although they don't have the best beds/bulbs and feel really awkward just stopping in to tan), I get discounts on water and other various drinks (which makes them cheaper if I were to stop at a store on the way in) and when I bring a friend, they don't get hounded to join! $20/month isn't too ridiculous and anytime I've had to deal with customer servicey-type things, the workers have been nothing but pleasant. For 10 dollars a month you can expect the good with the bad. The place has lots of cardiovascular equipment. So much, in fact, you just may see somebody running backward on a treadmill! I really do wish that the staff would provide advice to some folks though. A big injury is waiting to happen from those who use the equipment incorrectly. Ps... the smith machine is not to be used for jump rope while performing an overhead press. I wish there were a no smoking policy within a certain distance of the door. You can get a whif of some smoke occasionally when you use the cardio equipment by the door. The 10 dollar price tag is a value. Keep in mind you'll have to deal with the high school bros swarmed around the 4 smith machines (because pf doesn't do bench press areas) the free weight area is also about the size of a Ford escort. It could easily be expanded to triple the size. Again, I don't see it happening. 10 bucks. It's cheap. It's 24 hour. It gives you a head ache. read more

Southgate Planet Fitness has the most caring staff. I was working out and misplaced my keys. I looked around and could not find them. I went to the front desk and told Stacy. The next thing I knew, the entire staff Stacy, Kelly, Tom, and Joe were helping me look for my keys. We looked everywhere in the gym trying to retrace my steps. The staff even put on gloves and checked the garbage cans. They also kept checking my car to be sure it could not be stolen. It took almost an hour but Stacy found my keys. I signed up here for a 12 month gym membership. They kept charging me beyond the 12 months even though I called to cancel, then later informed me I need to come in person or send a certified letter to cancel....yet this was never explained to me upon sign up...nor the fact that they will keep taking your money unless you go through their procedures. I didn't even use this facility for eight months because I didn't like the gym, they made hundreds of dollars off of me and they are nickeling and diming me over a 80$ charge...a multi billion dollar company. They probably make so much money off people who move or don't know they have to send a CERTIFIED letter to cancel...a normal letter is not good enough nor is a fax. Anyway, they never addressed the issue as to why their staff member told me everything was cancelled when I called in January but then after realizing they kept charging my card told of their specific procedures to cancel. When I told the manager this she vehemently denied that anyone would ever say such a thing because you have to come in person or spend 6$ to send a certified letter....ok lady, why would I lie about that? Obviously, I didn't want to be charged and as soon as I found out I had to send a certified letter to cancel I did so. I thought everything was taken care of, how is it my fault that they don't properly train their staff? What a racket. Never had this experience with any other sort of gym membership, and I've had a few memberships in my life. They also said I owed some sort of "late fees"--but how can that be if they have my card number and keep automatically charging me every month? Called to sort it out and was hung up on several times until finally had to request the store manager who acted like she was doing me some sort of favor by voiding out the arbitrary "late fees." Ever hear the phrase the customer is always right? How about sending me a letter of apology, reversing back the $79,05 that you allege I owe. And it's not just cancellation"by mail" as you stated here. I was specifically told by the manager it must be by certified mail as I would have much rather saved my 6$ (including return receipt so I know you officially got the cancellation). Nor is a letter by fax good enough because as told by your staff member, you don't have a fax number which to me seem ludicrous that a business in this day and age has no fax number. And if I give you my credit card number, date of birth, social security number, address, etc. you should be able to verify identity. I have less trouble getting bank information or certified medical records. Fact is you made hundreds of dollars off of my 12 month membership when I didn't even frequent your gym then you "renew" the policy based on the fact I don't know your arbitrary procedures. You may want me to waste my time coming to talk to you in person but have had enough of your company and this particular location and never was explained to me never pointed out very rude staff that hung up on me several times when I tried to resolve this matter amicably several months ago. so please save the damage control post. You know how I know your post is "damage control"? If you were seriously concerned about customer service then you would have privately messaged me to give explanation and or amend your actions. Absolutely terrible customer service. I was told in June that my card had expired and that I was not allowed to workout anymore until I showed them my card. I had wanted to quit anyway due to the area of the location and the noticeable decline of both the gym itself and the employees that work there, especially the "manager" Desire, so I just did not return. Turns out they continued to bill me even though one of their employees told me I could not work out there anymore. So then I called to speak to the manager, what a joke, and she told me there was nothing she could do for me. I actually have to go in there to cancel my membership. Very rude on the phone, and would not give out her regional managers information...hmmm that's fishy. DON'T GO THERE! Have had no issues with other locations. I lift things up and put them dowwwnnnn. I was so thankful for a friend that offered me the opportunity to join her as a guest today. After a boring workout at my usual spot, I sure could use a change of scenery. This place is awesome. It's in the middle of a shopping center, though, which is weird for some reason. Once I got there, I waited about 5 mins for my friend to arrive and that gave me the chance to survey the place. NICE! It's HUGE! I was even drawn to the container of purple and gold pens AND grape flavored tootsie rolls. GRAPE FLAVORED TOOTSIE ROLLS! After she checked in, I signed in as a guest and we hit the cardio area first. There were rows and rows of ellipticals, treadmills and this other cool machine whose name escapes me. There's a 12 minute ab circuit area where you follow a red light-green light system as you move from machine to machine. Same goes for the 30 minute total body workout circuit area. There are many weight machines so you don't have to wait to use one. There is a specified area for yoga mats and balance balls (that they provide!), too. One tiny thing. They have a strict "no head scarf" policy. I did see a sign that mentioned it, but I thought to myself, "clearly, they're not talking about for women". Oh, but they were. I was approached by a manager who respectfully made me (and my friend who had the membership) that they didn't allow head scarves and politely asked me if I'd remove mine. Bless his heart, he was very nice. I agreed to remove my scarf, but OMG, I couldn't help but spend the rest of my time there wondering what I'd do with my hair if and when I return. I usually wear a head scarf when I work out! I asked if he'd mind telling me why that's their policy. He stated that it was created some time ago and it's basis was for gang colors & references, etc. He apologized because he knew that women wore scarves, too and that it unfortunately affected us. I wanted to whimper, "but mine is a Ford breast cancer scarf". I spent a good hour and a half there and had it not been so late, I would have stayed longer. I'm SO interested in following up and watching their offers listed on their website. I'd absolutely "unjoin" my current gym and sign on with Planet Fitness. read more

I am not a Gym-Goer. I am more of a Food-Eater. I dread Gyms. I don't like the feeling I get when I am inside of a Gym. They make me very uncomfortable. The meat-heads, the skinny-minnies, the eyes peering at you while you are all sweaty and gross. Yeah, I hate Gyms. BUT...... I am forcing myself to get fit. I am not in terrible shape but need to tone up a bit so Gym hunting I went. One place I tried (Fitness Studio in Trenton) was awful from start to finish (i.e. bad instructors). Another place I tried was okay but the equipment was old and the gym itself was too small (Gym in Trenton). Then I kept seeing the Planet Fitness commercials and their ridiculous deals and I thought, "What the heck?!" Good thing; I have found my gym. I actually really enjoy this Gym. It is HUGE. They have rows and rows of equipment with rows and rows of TVs. Each piece of equipment is modernized with ports for headphones if you want to tap into their radio systems, their TVs, or you can hook up any of your own latest gadgets. Everything appears semi-new/new and again, there is plenty of room there; you do not feel cramped whatsoever. They do have cleaning stations for people to use so you clean your own equipment after each use. Everyone I noticed followed this rule. They also have a very lax dress code policy. Meaning, you do not have to be wearing designer workout gear to fit in. No one really pays attention to you so you can get sweaty and not feel weird about it. I love that incognito feeling about this place. People are friendly if you happen to catch their eyes but people do not bother you or stare at you. People do not cluster together and chitchat making a clique environment either. The staff, although fairly young, are all very helpful and kind. Typically, the staff at gyms are the worst culprits for making you feel uncomfortable. Not this place! They do have some convenient circuit training sections too. Like Nikki said, a 12 minute workout for your abs and a 30 minute overall workout. These areas of the Gym use a lighting system to keep people on track. They also have super clean shower/locker room areas. I have not once seen this area look dirty. This is a big plus for me as I am not a fan of shared common space in bathrooms. There are also VIP areas if you pay the extra $10/month. I opted for this as I liked the fact that you could go to any other Planet Fitness if you wanted to (up to 10 times a month at another location). Plus, the VIP includes free tanning, laser light treatment, massage chairs, a t-shirt, discount on drinks, etc. Oh, and you can bring a workout buddy for free with the VIP pass too. For me personally, it was a no-brainer as y'all know...I AM VIP!!! HA! However, they do have a cheaper plan that offers straight access to the Gym. Anyhoo, back on track here......I am SHOCKED that I finally found a Gym environment that I feel relaxed in. Planet Fitness is doing it right. read more

I joined this gym after dumping my old Powerhouse location, because Planet Fitness is open 24/7! I always hated having to plan my workout schedule around when a place was open. They always run a ton of specials, and I currently pay $20 a month (forever until I cancel). That "Black Card" membership entitles you use their tanning unlimited too, which will save money by not having to go somewhere else. It's a very convenient aspect of the gym. No Wi-Fi, but I can manage without it. As far as being busy, I've been there at times when I was the only person there (4am on a Sunday morning) and when the place is a madhouse (5pm on a Friday afternoon), but it's a very spacious and well-equipt gym. They have rows and rows of cardio machines, and in the weightlifting section, they have three of most machines. They even give you a schedule of when they are busy if you want to avoid the clammer. The locker rooms (at least the men's) are very clean, and it's common to see a worker going in there very frequently to make sure it's clean. There are plenty of lockers and showers. They have a lot of TVs facing the cardio section. It's always nice and cool in there since they have large ceiling fans. The tanning is limited to 10 minutes a session, and their beds and bulbs aren't of the high quality that a stand-alone tanning salon might have. They appear to be rather weak. I can tan for 10 minutes and barely notice anything. But, it's included, so you can just go as often you want. Their guest passes are also a good perk if you want to bring along someone who isn't a member. My wife always comes with me, and it doesn't cost any extra. So, we basically pay $20 a month for a membership for the two of us. I always thought their "no critics" slogan was dumb and overplayed, because it's pretty much no different from any other gym that features members that are much more attractive than you. read more

As far as gyms go, this one is clean! It doesn't have that stagnet sweat smell that most gyms have. Everything seems to be clean; the taking beds are shut down several times a day for cleaning, the machines are dusted through the day, and I have never visited and not seem an employee in the bathroom/shower/locker area cleaning. I am always greeted and given a farewell by someone at the front counter. There are training classes including in your membership, and are very helpful. My friend in Florida turned me on to this place and am I ever grateful when lo and behold one opened up in Downriver. I have NEVER liked gyms and despise lifting weights, etc., but this place is so easy to maneuver around, with easy to operate machines and down-to-earth staff and clientele that it made me instantly feel at home. If you've ever felt intimidated by a gym, this place will change all that. And I love how clean they keep it! The best part about this particular location is there's lots of parking and the gym itself is extremely spacious so you never feel crowded in. Wonderful concept for a gym and I am so happy they're popping up all over. And seriously, it's a steal at only $10 bucks a month for basic membership. LOVE THEM! read more
