This is actually one of the best records stores I have been in since I have moved to the Tampa area and it's super close to the German Knoodle (best German food ever). This will be a must stop whenever I'm in the area and the owner is a gem. When we walked in he asked me about anything specific I was looking for and on my way out he made sure if there was something I was looking for specifically he would keep his eye out for me. That's something I really appreciate as a vinyl collector. We found all the prices at this location to be rather fair and lower than some of the other vinyl shops in the area. read more

When I found out I would be visiting St Pete with my partner (I'm from Los Angeles), first thing I did was research the record shops and venues nearby. Planet Retro came up as one of the only shops to cater to listeners of the heavier genres. Also for having in shop performances After actually dropping in for a visit I was pleasantly surprised. A pretty wide stock of punk, hardcore, Doom & Sludge; as well as post punk, bat cave and new wave! After plenty of crate digging I was able snag a few rarities and some stuff to round out my collection that I was not able to find in LA shops. Brought my stuff up to the register and had a really nice conversation with the owner about our musical tastes and he ended up recommending a radd record. Prices where totally fair to me but I guess that depends on what your used to. Overall had a great time perusing the shop and I will definitely be back next time I'm in town!! Hopefully even catch a show! Give this spot a go. Maybe even come away with some radd shit. read more

My husband is a collector, primarily of hardcore/punk/straight edge bands. I'm not, but I've certainly be to a lot of record stores with him over the last 13 years. This was by far one of the nicest. Super well organized, and definitely caters to the genres my husband loves most. He walked away with 2 EPs and 2 LPs and a wide grin on his face. As we were checking out, we chatted with the owner for a few minutes. He's super friendly, clearly knows a lot about music, and is passionate about his merchandise. Let's just put it this way...if you sell used vinyl and are halfway decent about it, most likely you are going to get a good review. If you do it in my hood and bring life to an empty storefront, you're probably going to get a really good review from me. What can I say about Planet Retro? IT's a pretty phenomenal place. A wide variety of music, super well curated by the owner, who is a vinyl encyclopedia and a super nice dude. Planet Retro has all the standard classic rock vinyl, but where it really shines is in super well curated metal, punk, harcore and new wave collections. it's pretty clear the guys running this place know those genres and know what to put in there. You also can't beat the amazing number of live shows they have there. Every Friday night and more. They're having a full day show on record store day. It's great to see the vinyl resurgence collide with the resurgence of Grand Central in St Pete. AND the place has a t-shirt for sale that is their store name on the Smith's Meat is Murder album cover. THAT'S A WIN! read more

This is an awesome shop. The dude who owns this place is great and is willing to assist you with finding something. He's also up for some general music chat as well. This was one of the best record store experiences I've had in the Tampa Bay Area. If you are into punk-ish stuff, this is a great place to dig. He's got an awesome selection. On what has been deemed by the local print media as "record store weekend," my first visit here was impressive. Great variety of artists in many genres of music. It's well organized into this compact space of a store and the store has a lot of character. It's the feel you get when you're looking for something you really want and you feel that rush of anticipation that you're about to fund it! The owner was present which I always like. I over heard him being interviewed by the media including a photo session. I truly appreciate those who can impart their historical musical knowledge in sharing with others. It's like hearing and seeing a good movie reviewed. I sensed that about the owner. There are larger record stores but who has time or the desire to wade through millions of albums. On this day the store was packed with music admirers. I'm also impressed to see so many people interested in new and vintage vinyl. Retro was like finding the cream of the crop. And when one finds that rare or special LP, don't hesitate. But it, take care of it and enjoy it! This is a fun and interesting place. I'll return when I have more quality time browse. read more

Girlfriend and I took a trip out to Clearwater, FL, and found this record store along the way. Fantastic store for record digging and has quite the selection (picked up a Residents album, and some great $1 finds). The vibe of the store was awesome, and the owner was great as well. In town for a hockey tournament this weekend, so on a buddy's recommendation I made the trek from Wesley Chapel to St. Pete to check out Planet Retro. Definitely worth the trip. Spent a good hour and a half shopping, staff was helpful and friendly, prices were reasonable, and I even managed to land a couple of records that I've been hunting for without breaking the bank. They had a decent selection of full lengths and singles, lots of cool rarities along the walls, and from what I've heard from friends, they have some great shows there as well. Looking forward to my next opportunity to visit! read more

Great place. Great selection. It does tend to lean more on the Metal/Punk side (which isn't' a deal breaker). Great selection of brand new titles, and oldie but goodies..Even stumbled across some older Less Than Jake. It's a little on pricier side I've seen in recent years, but everything (I mean everything) appears to be in near perfect/mint shape. I'll definitely be back to pick through the rows. read more

One of the newer vinyl record stores in the Tampa Bay Area and already one of the better ones Rob keeps a nice selection that changes weekly and based on that selection it appears he pays well for his records. You. Can tell a lot about a store by its inventory. Some stores pay the minimal and it shows in their flea market like quality. Pay a fair price and the inventory improved. This store is one of the few I've bern to that carries thousands of 45's, many Uk pressings Visit St Pete and check out the store. It's the best in the St Pete area. read more

If you collect vinyl, this is a great place in St. Pete. Have found many gems here for less, and the guy who owns it is super cool and nice. We regularly pay a visit when we are in town. Great selection at great prices plus he has bands play there regularly. Always a good time sourcing new and used vinyl! He also has many geek collectibles that are pristine and many still in the box. So if you have your heart set on a vintage Godzilla piece, this is the place to look! read more

Turns out that it was all BS.I was on a time restraint and needed to sell fast. He screwed me, never showed or called. To anyone reading this, my suggestion is move on to another place. Met the owner a few times at my own store. He is an Honest Dealer, knows his stuff, always respectful & Nice to talk to when he stops by. Excellent record store, especially if you are into punk and metal. I stopped in there on a day I was pressed for time and simply had to go back the next day because there were so many gems in this shop on my want list. Rob is an all around great guy to shoot the breeze with about record collecting, he's seen it and knows it all when it comes to the punk/hardcore/metal niche. My only wish is that he sold online as I will only be able to make it to his awesome shop about once a year. The St. Pete scene is lucky to have a store of this caliber in their area. read more
