Michigan doesn't have a lot to offer when it comes to natural vertical structures. The only alternative is to create one for people to play on. That's where Planet rock comes in and shows people how to really do the rock and wall climb thing.   If you're a noob, just like we were. Make sure you get the beginners package which comes with instructions on how to do tandem climbing. Here they teach you the wax on and wax off on safety and they are very thorough. Maybe it's because nobody wants to get dropped when they're 50 feet up on the wall. After the instructions, we proceeded to the floor and put whatever we learned into action.   They have walls climb courses from real easy to hard as heck. You like to free climb?? There's a wall for you as well. This isn't your garden variety wall climb at your around the corner YMCA,, no sir. This is where rock and wall climbing geeks come together and climb. This is probably the spot where you can test out if you'll become one of them or not ever.   This place is a awesone place for active people who wants to keep active. When your local gym becomes too reduntant, this is a pretty good alternative for a work out.   Life is way too short to do boring things. Weeeeeee!

Bouldering, top-rope, lead climbing, and even a speed wall; this gym has it all. I went to boulder, and all-in-all had a great time; the route setting was good (there are routes that are great if it's your first time and challenging routes for even the most experienced climbers), and when I went it wasn't overly crowded. I didn't have any problems getting on the wall and at the most had a short wait to get on specific routes. As a visitor from out of town the gym offers everything you might need to get on the wall. The gym rents out shoes, harnesses, belay devices, and chalk bags so you'll be set no matter what kind of climbing you decide to do. I brought my own shoes but needed some chalk which they were happy to rent out to me. To walk through the doors to the climbing area you need to pass a belay test. I went to just boulder, so I was little confused as to why I had to spend time to pass the test. Even having passed the test they don't give you a tag or any other sort of identification to attach to your harness to let you know you passed which was also a little confusing. I noticed that lead certified climbers carry a tag, and I think it would be better if they had a similar top rope belay tag so that those who don't want to do roped climbing could get in/out slightly easier. I've seen the top rope certified and lead certified tag system work at other gyms and really wish Planet Rock had a similar system. The gym staff were friendly and helpful. There's plenty of parking in their private lot so you won't struggle to find a space even when the gym is crowded. The vibe of the gym was overall positive; other climbers were great, however I wasn't a fan of the colored top rope wall aesthetic (it makes the gym look/feel much older than it actually is); I much prefer the grey color of the bouldering walls and wish the rest of the gym walls matched. Despite my rating, I really am appreciative of Planet Rock and am glad Michigan has a solid gym to get people into climbing.

Great gym! The beginner package comes with an introduction class where hey teach you how to rope yourself and use the equipment. There is a range of courses you can use. There is also self ropes for individuals that come alone. I highly recommend this place for anyone willing to try something new!

    Working on a dual-tex V5+

My sister and I climbed here today and I'd say that we had a good experience. First time at a new gym, even for an experienced climber, can be hard to know what to expect and not often a smooth experience. Friendly staff helped us the moment we got in the door until we hit the walls. A couple of things to note is that whereas at some gyms like Hoosier heights where you they have carabiners on all the topropes so you just clip in, at Planet rock you tie in each time with the figure eight follow through knot. Also, at planet rock you have to rent the belay device, a BD ATC pro. So if you're used to the typical gym grigri, just keep that in mind. Top rope routes here vary in height and difficulty pretty well. They have some tall walls, I think the tallest was close to 90ft. They have a really nice boulder area, which I used the most. Almost all of the boulders were steeper then vertical, I.e. not a lot of slabby boulders. But a good variety of problems, quite a few in the V4-V6 range but good variety none the less. Routesetting for the boulders seemed spot on. I had a lot of fun working out some V5 and V6's. they don't use tape to mark routes and boulders. Each route has the same color of holds which adds to the aesthetic. Smaller gym than say Hoosier heights, but the addition of big windows by the boulder area brought in some natural light and makes other gyms feel grungy in comparison.

Great rock climbing gym in the Detroit suburbs. Many bouldering and top-rope routes that are continuously updated by a dedicated staff.

Loved their small slab bouldering wall and loved that they had a few slab top rope routes to choose from.

The trip was planned out and organized with 4 different yoga sessions, a guided silent hike (so incredible), lots of free time, and seriously gourmet meals provided for breakfast and dinner each day. The lodge we stayed at was out of a movie - it was absolutely huge and so gorgeous. There's a lake on site with canoeing and paddle boating, a waterfall leading into the lake, and a covered and cushioned seat at the top of the waterfall. There's multiple firepits and fireplaces outside, and we sat outside at night and watched the stars and went in the huge hot tub. This place was seriously out of control beautiful. The weather was 60 and sunny (SO GORGEOUS SUNNY) every day and it truly made the whole experience that much more magical. Besides all the natural beauty and adventuring available on site at the lodge, it's of course right in the hocking hills area, so some of the best hikes in the US are a 5 minute drive. During the day on Saturday my sister and I hiked up to a rock climbing and repelling area and ate our lunch while watching people scale rockfaces and repel back down. It was seriously glorious. I've never been on a yoga retreat before, but this was so much fun. Jessica (owner) is an outstanding host and I just cannot stop gushing about this retreat, you guys. Her yoga practice is so caring and thought provoking and honest, it's just beautiful. Everything was great. 5 stars!

I'm honestly pretty upset with how Lifetime as a brand has changed. Customer service? Gone. The feeling of inclusivity? Gone. It's like they no longer care about their members. I get that they're saving some money by not being open 24/7, but it's still a huge letdown. We've tried the Canton location multiple times, but there's always something broken or out of order. So we went to the Troy location, only to find that our family membership doesn't work here--only Novi and Canton. After upgrading, my son, who loves basketball, was disappointed to see that half the courts are now taken over by pickleball. Now they're even getting rid of basketball courts altogether. When I asked, I was told that "basketball doesn't make us money." Isn't that why we're paying $275 a month for a family membership? Today, after upgrading, we got kicked off the basketball court within an hour because of some family event. Apparently, they have arts and crafts tables in the gym on Saturdays. We were told we could come back after 8pm, but why did we drive 55 minutes from Ann Arbor for that? There's other space they could've used, but I'm guessing that's being rented out for more money, while the members are pushed aside for things like pickleball. Honestly, the Las Vegas locations are great, but the Michigan ones are a mess. I've been harassed since day one at Canton. It's frustrating because, just like 24-Hour Fitness, Lifetime is drifting away from what made it great--caring about the members. Eventually, I think they'll learn, especially when they start closing down locations, just like 24-Hour did. I just hope they realize that the people--the members--are what keeps their revenue flowing. Plus spend some money on this club first, everything is old and falling apart..... Maybe one day, pickleball will fade out like racquetball did. But until then, here's an idea: Troy could convert those racquetball courts into basketball courts. That would actually make sense!

I've been a member at Life Time Fitness Troy since 2002, and I've never been this disappointed…read more They are completely getting rid of the basketball courts and replacing them with pickleball. First they took one court away, and now they're taking BOTH courts starting April 19. Basketball has always been one of the main reasons people come here, and now it feels like that doesn't matter at all. Instead, pickleball is taking over the entire space with prime-time hours--6-9:30 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 6-9 PM on other days--basically making it impossible for anyone to play basketball after work. On top of that, the courts were never even taken care of properly. The basketball floors are rarely cleaned, and the wood clearly needs to be polished. For a gym charging around $150 a month, you would expect much better maintenance, but it feels like they never cared about the basketball side at all. Another issue is the hours. The basketball courts close at 11 PM Monday through Thursday, and the entire club closes at 11 PM on Fridays--which is crazy considering most locations stay open later. This is the only club I know closing that early on a Friday. After over 20 years of being a loyal member, it feels like long-time members are being pushed aside. The gym might look nice, but taking away something this important--and not even maintaining it properly while it was there--completely ruins the experience.

I was shocked out how quiet it was for a Friday afternoon in the summer. We aren't residents of FH, so paid $40 for the three of us. The staff when signing up was super helpful and informative. There are lockers as you head towards the pool, to leave your belongs. Only downside was you need to bring your own lock, so we couldn't use one. Once entering the pool area, there's quite a bit of seats along there walls, so we found a couple chairs to place our belongings. There were plenty of lifeguards the whole time we were there and they let you know if you were breaking a rule (sitting/ swimming) in the entrance/ walk path into the pool. There is one main slide, a 2 lane lap, lazy river-not sure if you can bring a tube (but probably not safe or big enough to have one), a rock wall and rope (which we noticed kids wearing a green bracelet in order to use the last two things). Only thing I noticed would be helpful is when the staff (for the slide) goes on break, another staff should take over. The staff was on break for about 30 min, but figured since there were so many other lifeguards, one could've easily provided coverage.
