I had a wonderful experience with Plant Delights Nursery! I had originally come across them on one of their open garden days. We received their catalog then and I love looking through it and seeing all the unique plants they offer. I decide to email them to get a suggestion on a flowering vine for an area of my yard that doesn't get much light-- they suggested Clematis 'Rooguchi' (I had never heard of that varietal before). I decided to go for it! I placed my order online. The small plants were pricey, but the vine is also unique. When I picked up the plants, they were smaller than I expected. But, they've only been planted for a few weeks and they are doing great. They are quickly growing and some have already started to flower. Picking up the plant was pretty easy. You just pull up to their pickup tent and ring the bell. I waited for a bit and was about to call when an employee stepped on out. He apologized and said everyone was calling at once. Once I gave him my name it only took a few minutes for him to grab everything. Even the grounds by the parking lot are beautiful. Every inch of this place is so beautifully landscaped. Highly recommend visiting on one of the open garden days! read more

This is a great place for getting unusual plants that add interest to your garden. Among the great things they have: amaryllids, aroids, hardy orchids, elephant ears, yuccas, and interesting native plants. I made one last more purchase from PDN in 2019 only because a friend paid for shipping with the same results to my last purchase. * Agave parryi var. neomexicana 'Sunspot' - died in less than a year. I have 3 friends who bought the same agave at the same time. All 4 agaves died quickly. * Agave 'Sun Glow' - still alive but has a crown leaf that is currently blackened half way up. In total I have owned 13 PDN plants and only 4 are still alive. I would only recommend their Agave ovatifolia 'Vanzie', A. nickelsaie, 'Snow Glow' and possibly 'Sun Glow' if it pulls through. All the others I've purchase have been weak, sickly, overpriced plants that die quickly. Save your money and buy local. read more

Stay away from mail-ordering w/ this company; a rip-off w/ shipping! Received a nice Gift Certificate, for an ample amount of money in hopes of picking out a decent plant. Surprisingly, the price of shipping was so high, (over $60!), that it ate up the allotment for ordering a decent small plant, supplies, or a decor item for the garden. So, ended up having to order a small potted plant, without the pot of course, that had to be shipped within the state. This is after I questioned the amount of shipping with their Customer Service person. Their response: "you can order more..."; implying to spend more money, for less. This is definitely a way-overpriced gimmick. Picked out one small plant, and now trying to keep it alive. read more

True, I had to pick up my plant in the pouring rain BUT here is my experience. I rang the bell twice and stood outside waiting for a response- none. I ran back to my car in the rain and tried calling to let them know I was outside for pickup- but no celluar coverage. I ended up wandring into an "employees only" tent. They told me to knock on the garage door- which I did. An unpleasant woman came out and told me to ring the bell! Finally she realzed she needed to go and get the plant for me. I am not impressed with the service or the plant. The plant was overpriced and had brown rusty spots on the leaf which I didn't notice until I got home. read more

I'm very disappointed with this company. While they do have beautiful and exotic plants, their lack of customer service is disheartening. I bought 3 over priced dormant plants in March. Two have come up and one has not. It appears to be a "dud." I've emailed once, called twice and now they are telling me to call back in 3 weeks because maybe it will bloom at some point in the future. Poor quality plants, exorbitant shipping charges and unfriendly service. Ordered 3 perennial plants in Spring 2021. $15.00 per plant shipping charges were added to the $19.00 charge per plant, though all 3 came in one small box that probably weighed about a pound. They arrived tiny and dehydrated, and there were no root balls. The company claims they guarantee the health of their plants for 7 days, so I quickly notified the company these plants weren't viable. I was told to wait 2 weeks and the guarantee would still be in effect. After two weeks, one was dead and the others were not thriving, while everything else planted in this garden from another nursery was already growing beautifully. When I contacted the company again, they said to wait 3 months before they'd honor the guarantee, leaving my garden looking unfinished all season. After 3 months, two were dead and the third had yet to produce one new leaf, though my green thumb has kept it alive. After repeatedly complaining, I was ultimately refunded $38.00 for the two dead ones, while in essence, I wound up paying $67.00 for the one plant that is so puny that I don't expect it to survive winter. read more

Never going to buy from them again. They do not honor their guarantee. On my third order, I bought a bunch of plants including a $75 agave parrasana Impressionist that im expecting to be nice looking healthy plant but guess what It wasn't. From my last reply i got from the manager " You are quite lucky: that pot slipped by my watchful eye, from the looks of the plant you received three impressionists (a mature plant and 2 pups) for the price of one plant." How can you justify that? I certainly dont feel lucky, i just purchased an expensive plant that is sick. I have a similar experience with another reviewer here named Jesse. Also their shipping is disappointing, they don't pack them very well and they dont put too much packing material enough to secure the plants. I decided to post an update here, because Tony did reach out to me and explained more about the problems they have been having. Furthermore, as it happens, there was actually a plant left that was accidentally duplicated in someone else's order, and after being caught, had yet to be returned to inventory. Tony went out of his way to ship me said plant, overnight and free of charge, to fulfill the missing part of my earlier order. I was not expecting that at all, as I planned to try and re-order in the fall instead if anything. I am thoroughly satisfied with their response and their attempt to make up for this unfortunate inventory debacle. I understand they also had some staff changes as a result, so hopefully this won't repeat itself anytime soon. I still don't think I'll be ordering again until fall when the weather improves, but I genuinely appreciate their effort to fix this situation for me. They have certainly won me back as a customer. read more

Can't speak enough warnings about this place. The management truly do not care about their plants or their customers. Customer service is genuinely non-existent and the plants come with poor soil and often pest infestation. There are so many other places to purchase plants where the plants are healthy and the company wants to help the customers through all steps of the process. Completely negative experience with this nursery. I ordered an orchid for my mother for Mother's Day. After multiple delays shipping the plant, it's finally delivered with half of it shriveled up and dead. They refused to refund me for the plant, saying it's viable, nor for the shipping because they said that ground shipping isn't guaranteed. Not sure how I would know that since there's no disclaimer on the site. Terrible experience and the person on the phone basically told me to go ahead and right a negative review. Slippery business, this. The way they deal with customer complaints is to never follow up. Customer service is non-existent. I purchased 15 (overpriced) plants, and payed a whopping 30 percent of the cost of the plants for their remarkably inflated shipping fee. The total came to more than $400. Most of the plants were passable quality (not great, but viable), but one was nothing but a barely rooted twig. A $28 dollar plant with almost no roots. Just an expensive pot of planting medium with a poorly rooted cutting in it. I contacted PD immediately, by email, saying that I would not accept that plant. I followed up with a phone call (they don't answer the phone, so I left a message). I did get an email (requested by me) acknowledging that I had contacted them within the required 7 days of receipt, but after that it was crickets. I ended up getting a partial refund through PayPal. PD posts this guarantee on their website: " We guarantee that our plants will arrive healthy and in prime condition. Our plants are adequately rooted (unless dormant) and true to variety." But when you receive your plants they come with a "planting guide" booklet containing language that seems to be intended to protect them against all claims. They tell you that you need to remove all of the non-soil planting material from the roots before you plant out your purchases. They even instruct you to wash the roots and fan them out over the soil while planting. But 12 OF my plants were so potbound that all of this was impossible. The rootballs were just solid, matted blocks. PD covers themselves on those potbound plants, though, by saying "the more roots, the better." They tell you not to use any fertilizer, ever (even though their plants are rooted in nutrient-free wood chips, and have been surviving on fertilizer). And so on. Their crazily contradictory planting and growing advice is so weirdly specific that it has to be written as a way of blaming all plant failures on the customer. Regrettably, they are now espousing radical and proven false political views. They sent out a plant catalog with an extremely offensive and racist cover. I had planned on making a purchase on line but had questions. I tried calling several times. Each call I tried to leave a message. The phones are either messed up or their vm is "off."Then I decided to email....I got a response first stating if I was soliciting to remove them which is understandable. The email then offered to "help" and asked for more info and pictures which I supplied. Never heard back. I emptied my shopping cart and decided they aren't worth the effort. I found the plants I wanted from another supplier who were responsive to customer inquiries. No loss but after reading the rest of the reviews here I feel like I dodged a bullet. read more

I consider PDN the "Tiffany's" of nurseries . Go there and enjoy the botanical gardens. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained. The plant prices are outrageous and many of the plants can be found much cheaper at other nurseries. Unless they have a unique plant for which you have been searching, you can get a lot more for your money at other nurseries. read more

If I could choose 0 stars I would The positive news: Had a decent buying experience last year. Also their catalog is terrific. The negative: placed an order for several lady slippers totaling over $350 on May 5 with ship date the following week. When I did not receive any communication nor the merchandise I ordered, I sent an email asking for status. I was told that order was delayed, and should ship week of May 15, because they fell behind with rain & weather. No further communication from PDN. Honestly I forgot about the order, focused on work and life. Today, when I received an email about a sale, I recalled that I am still waiting on this order that I was supposed to receive 6 weeks ago. Mind you, PDN has had my payment since May 5 and I have no merchandise in exchange. I called to inquire, and was told by the rep that they have not shipped anything and that 2 of the 5 items I had ordered were out of stock. When I asked why they had not contacted me in 6 weeks to follow up or why they had not shipped the ones they had in stock, the rep said, I called you this morning (no calls registered on my phone). I have to believe this is a lie, since my mobile phone captures all calls received. I was offered substitutions for the out-of-stock items, which I declined. Then the rep asked me if I wanted credit to the fall crop of the items. To which I answered that I had serious concerns about doing any business with PDN given the reason for my call. So she offered a refund on the 2, which I accepted. I was not given any break or refund on the $27.30 shipping. I asked if this wes typical of doing business with them, and told no, that the people who messed up my order no longer worked there, as if that absolved PDN of responsibility for resolving the fact that I spent $350 2 months ago with nothing in hand and no communication. I am curious whether I would have ever heard from this company if I had not emailed them in May and called them today. How can you accept an order and associated payment, and never proactively reach out to your customer with updates and any sort of service? I had a list of things from their catalog that were of interest, but cannot do business with a company that so far has cheated me out of $350-today's refund of $140. Really flabbergasted at the business practices at this company. I hope this was an isolated incident, because no customer deserves such crappy treatment. Could not be more disappointed in this company. I will be astonished if I get the remaining 3 items next week as promised. :-( read more

Oh, Plant Delights. You could spend hours perusing their comprehensive and expansive selection of perennials; it's a haven for plant connoisseurs itching to discover their next gardening project. They have a vast collection of unique and exotic plants typically hard-to-find at your average nursery; you are bound to find a unique plant that fills a specific garden niche. You will also find that their plants are of top-quality and are quite hearty. Keep in mind, Plant Delights is only open to the public several weekends out of the year. If you would like to see the plants before purchasing, you will have to attend one of their weekend open houses. However, you also have the option to order plants online, then schedule a pick-up at the nursery. If you have the option to visit during one of their open house weekends, though, I definitely recommend it; it is an experience in and of itself. Plant Delights also has superior customer service. I purchased a gift card online for a family member's Christmas gift; prior to completing my order, I called to verify it would arrive before the post office closed for the holidays. I was given the option to pick it up at the nursery but was assured it should be delivered before Christmas. If it wasn't, however, they offered to scan a copy of the gift card and email it to me so that I would still have something to give on Christmas. The gift card did arrive on time, but the extra effort to ensure customer satisfaction is one of the reasons I'm a long-time loyal Plant Delights customer. read more

Initially pleased but now very disappointed. My mother and I are avid gardeners and visited Plants Delights for the first time March 7 of this year. We found some unusual (hard to find) plants we liked and I purchased $654 worth of plants (I'm sure my mother's bill was several hundred dollars at least). We specifically asked about when we could put the plants in the ground, given the unusual weather we'd been having and were told by someone who seemed very well informed and seasoned that we could put anything we had purchased (she looked through our wagons of plants to see everything we had) in the ground "now" (meaning March 7) as they were perennials and would be fine. I planted all of the plants I purchased within 2 days of purchase in very good conditions. Since then, both my mother and I have several items that were killed, probably in one of the cold snaps we've gotten, and also several items that just never came up at all. My mother has been online chatting with Plant Delights and apparently their policy is not to replace items that have already come up and then die, despite the fact that the only reason we put the plants in the ground in the first place was that we were assured they would fine by the people at Plant Delights (I say this because I still had all my tropicals indoors and had not yet put them out). This is not a policy of a reputable nursery, particularly if customers are paying $13 and up for 4" pots of what appear to be nothing too impressive in the early spring. Incidentally, we didn't even want our money back, we just wanted to replace the plants, which would have cost them virtually nothing. I spend literally several thousand dollars a year in nursery items (it's a bit of an obsession) and my mom spends quite a bit as well -- this was a really pathetic way to lose two customers who would have been happy with just a few replacement plants. These interactions have demonstrated really poor judgement on their part, and again, this policy is not consistent with other reputable nurseries (like Homewood in North Raleigh for example) who stand by their plants and care whether their customers are pleased. read more

Stay away from this company. Shipping is outrageously expensive and they don't pack the plants properly for them to arrive in good condition. I ordered four Canna Lily from these people. After paying $25/$28 per plant and $48 for shipping, out of 4 plants, two arrived ruined. I contacted them right away and no response. After a whole week without any response, I had to contact them again. I sent pictures of the condition of the plants and package and their answer was that for Cannas, the more you cut them the more they grow. I was supposed to be getting live plants but instead I got a pot with one little stalk each. And basically after cutting the stalks of the two that arrived ruined, I ended up with two rizhomes lol. Crazy. I was back and forward with them but they wont stand by their product/service, only excuse after excuse. I understand carriers sometimes mess up packages but if you do not pack your items right, it is your fault, not the carriers. I have ordered from Horn Canna Farm multiple times, and they send real grown plants with 3/4 stalks, plus they arrive in perfect condition because how they pack them. Plus ONLY $10 FOR SHIPPING! There is no excuse. You are driving your business down the hill yourself. I will make sure not to order from you guys ever again and pass the info to others. One of the best, most amazing nurseries/gardens I've ever visited. Plant Delights Nursery/Juniper Level Botanic Garden are owned by Tony Avent, introduced as "horticulturist, plantsman, explorer, author and public speaker" by Wikipedia. I first came to know Tony when reading his book "So You Want to Start a Nursery" and as a part of an entertained audience of one of his numerous public talks. The garden serves as its exhibition/sales point and is open to public 8 weekends a year, twice per season according to its website. The nursery is for production and is operated as a mail-order business. A few highlights: 1). Vast collection of exotic plants. Its website touts a collection of 18,000+ different types of plants. It's probably not a good place to buy azalea, crape myrtle type plants, but a place to find some newest, strangest garden plants, such as red stem elephant ears, or cold hardy orchids. 2). Hostas and Agave. Tony Avent is a well known hosta breeder, and it's well worth you a trip if you are in need of or interested in shade plants with unique foliage. 3). Informative website (www.plantdelights.com). Of course, it's there to sale plants and it has very helpful information about probably every plant it sales. And much more, for example I once read a section with visitors asking all sorts of questions, with photos uploaded and most of questions, if not all, got answers by staff of the nursery. 4). Informative and FUN writings of plants or plant related stories. It's enjoyable to read the website, plant tags, catalog, articles, which are probably mostly done by the owner, who seems owning a natural born humorous personality. Personally I wonder if it's a waste of talent for Tony Avent not to be a comedian. 5). The plants are top quality and as mentioned earlier, with very helpful tag information: name (common and Latin), origin, size, cold hardiness, highlights of plant (when flowering, what's unique about it, etc.), often with a brief but fun story on how it's collected, bred, named, etc. The quality of plants and quality of information are matchless even when comparing with those "top-rated" local garden centers and the price, seems only slightly higher; I prefer to buy from here or buy from mass-produced Lowes /HomeDepot plants, instead of from the quality-not-up-to-the-often-commanding-price-tag type garden centers. Conclusion: grab your camera (and likely purse) and go to visit the garden when it's open. I believe you can also buy online and pick up at the facility. P.S. interesting there are a bunch of filtered reviews and removed reviews. I think Yelp reviews are supposed to be about products/services, and prefer people to have other things about a business going other channels. read more

Having recently moved here, I expected a lot more after reading the reviews on Yelp and elsewhere. I've dealt with a number of nurseries in the Cambridge area both as a landscape designer and an avid gardener. Most of these nurseries give a one year guarantee and although prices might have gone up--looking at last years catalogues and comparing the same plant with PDN, PDN's prices are considerably higher and the pot sizes are smaller in many cases with no guarantee of replacement if the plant doesn't survive a year. Some prices are even higher than the same item at White Flower Farm which I consider to be a very pricey supplier. Yes, they do carry many 'hard-to-find' plants, but if they don't survive, so what! This nursery has a very high opinion of itself. read more

This is a great independent nursery that also runs the Juniper Level Botanic Garden (reviewed separately). This nursery has an unbelievable selection of unusual plants. There were more varieties of hostas than I have ever seen in one place, and there are a number of other plants groups that they specialize in, as well. You can pick out your own plants on the open house days, or you can order on-line anytime and pick up your plants later at the nursery. I just came from an open house, and the plants were in very good condition. Don't come here looking for bargains though, most of these are unusual varieties and not things you'll find at Lowes or Home Depot. For the most part, I thought the prices reasonable for what you are getting, and they are certainly comparable to other better quality nurseries. read more

Edited Review: After initiating a credit card dispute the Nursery sent me two new plants free of charge including shipping. It shouldn't have been so difficult. New plants arrived in good condition. Original Review: Don't expect this company to stand behind their customer satisfaction promise. They state "100% satisfaction with our quality or your money will be cheerfully refunded". Not quite folks! I ordered six plants with four arriving in good condition and two damaged significantly by some of the other four moving around the box during shipping (they obviously didn't pack them properly since the plants were on top of each other upon opening the box). One of the two (a Mangave) was pretty much crushed, with every leave broken off, hanging by a thread, or severely wounded. How did they execute their 100% customer satisfaction guarantee? By telling me to fertilize the plants every other week and in a "few" months they should recover. A few months? I paid over $20 each for plants that I now have to wait a few months to look presentable. No offer by the company to return, replace or refund. Sad customer service. Beware. read more

No plant guarantees--beware. I purchased some items last season, one of which did not make it through the winter, despite the zone being OK. They would not replace it--not their policy. Too bad, because they have an attractive catalog and an otherwise pleasant, if steadfast, customer service rep. Their policy is just say no, so I've tossed the catalog. Other nurseries and mail order companies I've used in the past would not lose a customer for a few dollars. It's not like I bought a tree. I placed an order for 4 trillium last month. Although the expressed political opinions of the owner are inexcusable, I held my nose and placed the order because I wanted the plants so very much. My mistake; they were expensive and tiny, miserably packaged, damaged on arrival. Upon receipt a complaint was immediately submitted - absolutely no response. I threw away over $120. The order took 5 weeks to arrive, and they didnt care. and its been 2 months and havent heard anything and have attempted many times to reach them. Even tho they are a major ripoff they have a consolidation of less common varieties. Anyways. Wouldnt send em a goddamn penny at this point.
