My daughter has a shopping problem and after the holidays her closet with bursting with clothes. When she couldn't possibly fit another thing in her closet I suggested she clean it out and I offered to sell the clothes..and let her keep the money. I was hoping this would encourage her to do more closet cleanouts more often! She filled 2 large garbage bags of trendy teen clothes (Brandy Melville, Edikted, Aritzia and more). I told her I'd bring them to Plato's Closet. She warned me that she saw on TikTok that Plato's is super picky and rejects most clothes, but I was thinking how could they possibly reject all these barely warn clothes from the most popular teen brands. I expected to show up, have them go thru the clothes and pay me right away, but when i got there I noticed there was a process. You scan the QR code, leave the bags of clothes and then they text you when they are ready for you to pick up your cash plus anything they don't want. They said it wold take about 30 minutes so I decided to just wait in my car since it took me about that time to get to Plato's from home. As promised, 30 minutes later they updated me that everything had been sorted so I headed back in. They handed me back 2 full bags of clothes which clearly meant they didn't take much. And they gave me $58 for what they did take. They didn't actually show me what they took, but they said they were mostly looking for summer clothes (in January) so most of the rejections were fall/winter. They told me to come back in a few months with fall/winter clothes, but i wanted this stuff out of my house so dropped it at good will later that day where I hope they all went to good use. When I gave my daughter the $58 and told her they rejected most I got a "i told you so." I don't think this was enough money to encourage regular closet cleanouts, but maybe worth going back every so often with after a very large cleanout. I did browse a bit while I was in there and I saw a lot of clothes that my daughter was like. It all looked to be in great condition and all her favorite brands. I know a lot of teens like to shop here and i can see why, although clearly we don't need to add anything to my daughter's closet. read more

I wondered why this store had such poor reviews on Google, and today I unfortunately learned for myself exactly why. The atmosphere in the store is so unwelcoming, but more than that I brought in 6 articles of clothing that I barely wore and they rejected five of them! The worker cited that my clothes were too "professional" and "business like", which isn't their target audience...and yet they took in my black Calvin Klein dress that certainly fits the bill for professional and offered me $3 for it! I ended up selling it anyways because the goal was to rid myself of all of the clothing for at least some money back, but wow..never setting foot in there again. read more

Dropped clothes off and was told to come back later. Came back later to be told the size of clothes are too big and outdated (not the season for them). Purchased a "Coach" Purse from here. Had it authenticated. It was fake. Contacted Plato's Closet on Facebook to inquire as to how I return as I was within the seven day return window. I was not given a receipt when I purchased the item by the staff. So when I contacted them online, they said I could only get store credit, because I did not have a receipt which makes you wonder if that's why they make the receipt optional. I asked online if I could bring in my credit card statement with proof of purchase, they said no, but I could get a store credit. So I drove to the store to return and at least get the store credit and the staff said sorry you don't have a receipt even though I had purchased five days earlier within the return window. I waited 20 minutes for them to "call the manager" to be told sorry we will take your name down and "get back to you". Just so everyone knows, they do not authenticate any of their items they sell. They rely on those bringing items in to confirm authenticity with the "honor system" by signing a form that says they are authentic. So pretty much anything you could buy there could be counterfeit. I honestly have never met a more rude group of people. The online correspondence was downright appalling and the staff in the store was also incredibly rude, considering they are selling counterfeit items. And as I'm walking out frustrated some rude staff worker says "have a nice day". Will absolutely never step foot in the store again. And to top things off after I got home from trying to return the counterfeit merchandise, I got an online message saying even though I said I would give you a store credit I'm not going to because you were "rude" to the staff. Wow. Just wow. These people don't deserve your business because they are knowingly selling counterfeit goods and they are rude as can be when they get busted. I went in to sale some of my clothes, express shirts, Armani shorts, and wrangler wants, I can tell they didn't even go through the bags, don't know if they were tiered or if the clothes didn't fit into the "cool" category, but they didn't take any of the clothes, they said to come back in spring time when they were looking for winter clothes again, I guess shorts and short sleeve shirts are part of winter apparel now days. read more

This place is racist and discriminatory by all means!! They only suit to people of certain income and they judge you when you walk in to sell. My niece came to sell some of her shoes and she had a decent amount of stuff to sell and she tells the white teenager at rhe counter she has stuff to sell and my niece sets it on the counter and the teenager keeps telling my niece she will.have to scan qr code to get checked in after my niece numerous times tells her she has a phone that can't scan for qr codes, as if everyone these days is able to have a fancy newer model phone to.scan that stuff. My niece kept telling the girl she can give phone number and the girl working there was uninterested and lazy and says the only way to check in is to scan qr code. So.obviously this place isn't even interested to buy your stuff or their employees are so lazy and incompetent to type in information I to the system. So this tells me people with disabilities can't sell their clothes here either and neither can grandma's sell their grandkids clothing either because the employees only cater to a certain demographic. My niece told the girl working at the counter she will not do business with the store and will rather donate to charity. The girl nonchalantly tells my niece to have a good day. All this trip for nothing. Then maybe put on your door a big old sign saying only people with latest smartphones can sell their clothes here. And by the way those people don't even need extra cash selling clothes when they can afford a new smartphone every year. If the store is catered to teenagers, teenagers don't need to own the latest smartphone with all the features and can use a flip phone or an older cell phone. Again same with older populations too. By far this Platos is the most disgusting and discriminatory store by all means!!! It even shows how afraid they are of people stealing overpriced junk they sell they have to put an alarm detector thing at the door to beep if someone walks off with merchandise. How pathetic!! Worst plato's closet experience I've had so far. I came in with less than 10 items to sell, and I figured that these somewhat trendy pieces, at least one would sell. No. The girl told me that they passed on all of the items and that "we don't accept women's clothing". ????. First off, what? Second, I had two pairs of men's pants in there (including levi's 550 jeans). Third, I drove over half an hour for them to not accept women's clothing? Horrible. I had put something on hold and even in their Snapchat I saw one of the girls show it and say they were changing the date (I had seen the message late and asked) when I go in the girls said someone else had picked it up and just kept staring at each other. My most recent, and surprise surprise, disastrous experience with the personnel in the store, as well as with the store's 'selling' process was far below what's considered to be 'substandard' service(s); to put it more frank, I left them with all my designer items that I brought to them & 20 minutes later when I returned, I was handed everything back in complete disarray and was told "my things are more for women and not girls which their store's age group target is." For this I was understanding of, but it was the total disregard for my personal belonging that are all in pristine condition and for which they strew back into bags, with new pairs of heels taken out of their box and tossed upside down. My first time here was alright, they bought a few items but I was surprised they didn't take more since I was getting rid of brand new clothes from expensive brands. However, yesterday was a different experience. Most reviews are customers upset with the teenage girls (in this case about 5 of them) behind the counter. As soon as you walk in, you get the feeling that you are back in high school and they don't care about their jobs and only want brands that other high school girls will like. Now I am not sure if this is because they get an employee discount (so they are incentivized to pick clothes they will personally buy) or what the deal is. But my god they are terrible at their job, which is buying good clothes for a steep discount. I came in with 3 bags of clothing that included: Nike, Eddie Bauer, Polo, Calvin Klein, and even a Supreme t-shirt. When I dropped my items off and came back they said they didn't want anything, which was a shock to me because not only were these expensive brands, but some of them even had their original tags on them from me never wearing them! To add insult to injury, they didn't even put all the clothes back in the bags for me and I'm not even sure they actually went through all the bags. They then informed me that they are out of trend and wouldn't be buying anything. I guess I must be going senile at the ripe old age of 25, with Nike supreme, polo, Calvin Klein and Eddie Bauer not being popular anymore. TLDR: other reviews are correct, avoid this store. The girls who work there do not care if you have brand new or expensive clothes, they only want clothes that fit their high school style. read more

I went here to sell some clothes, my problem is not that they didn't take much or that they gave me 10.50 for like new $60 shorts. My problem is the employees. There were at least 4-5 high school aged girls in there. Two of them were on their phones watching tiktok loudly. The other ones were shit talking other customers loudly enough i could hear it over the vulgar music blasting throughout the store. i was the only person in the store and was really hoping they weren't talking about me. It's super inappropriate to be speaking that way about customers, period. Not sure if it's their age that makes them think they're better than everyone else but that really showed. I originally found this place on tik tok and thought I would donate some sneakers because the end result seemed pretty fair considering people pay lots of money for what they're donating . I gave them a pair of Air forces that were never worn and still in the box and 2 pairs of Jordan's (dunks) , worn but like new and of course still with the box . They gave me a total of $45 dollars which is absolutely ridiculous and not at all worth it . I was already sketchy when the one girl put my money on the counter instead of handing it to me which is common decency. Not to mention there was no receipt given back to me only the one they make you sign and the take it . After I left I proceeded to speak to the manager on the phone and she tells me they sell the shoes for 30-60% lower than the price on stock x and this is for all of the shoes together not each pair which again , is so ridiculous !! I do hope that whoever has my shoes next enjoys them and I'm always happy to donate especially when it's not being worn but I wouldn't shop or sell here again . If I could give zero stars I would. I've been here around 5 times over the last year to items. I have the same issue every time and I'm officially OVER IT. The girls here are SO rude. They just play on their phones while the line wraps around the store. I literally stood at the counter in front of 2 of them and waited... and waited... to pick up my items. A solid 5 minutes before either of them spoke to me. They are little bratty teenagers and are just SHITTTTTY to their customers. So unless you want a bunch of bitchy teenage girls to treat you like you are the nerdy kid at school... Wouldn't recommend this place. I never have any trouble selling my stuff, they don't seem to take any XL or 1x sizes though and I can never find anything in a size 14+ in the store. They also don't take Express or any high end clothing brands. They seem to be focused on a very teenage market and honestly the stuff they do buy isn't on trend... It's just all skimpy and at times, rather trashy. Not a fan. Don't shop/sell here it's not worth it. I have had much better experiences selling/buying at the Pleasant Prairie, Milwaukee, and Madison locations. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. I've always sold at Plato's and I've surprisingly always have had a pleasant experience. This was definitely the worst location I've been to. To start off, they told me I could only sell 2/4 bags I brought in, I've never been told there's a limit at any location ever. The manager was super snobby and had to be like 16. They took 3 items, one including brand new never worn Nike Air Force 1 07's 'Dusted Clays' (originally $124), and tried to give me literally $8 for them. The manager stuck a piece of paper with her name on them because she was clearly taking them lol. I took my shoes back and left. Took my bags right over to the Schaumburg location where I had THE BEST experience. They were closing in 30 minutes, manager still took my buy (and yes, ALL 4 bags) and I left with $101. I DO NOT recommend the LIBERTYVILLE location. Literally children running this store. read more

This store needs lower than a star rating. They discriminate soo bad. I took my clothe today Sunday 9/25/2022. There was only two young girls at the counter checking the clothes that was coming in. I had over 50 pieces of clothing and supposedly the girl went thru my stuff in 5-10 minutes and only took 2 items. I had good brands like Lululemon and free people. I was watching her go thru my stuff and she didn't even look anything up. When I took my items back, my clothes was still folded. I was so mad she didn't even unfolded them. How did she know what clothes I brought in if she didn't even unfolded them!!!! Either because I was Hispanic or older or both! I am never going to this store again!! The WORST customer service I have ever experienced. I downloaded yelp for this review because it was just that bad...They didn't even look through my stuff, they just moved a few pieces around the top and then I got my text saying they were finished 5 minutes later. The rest of the bag was still folded and untouched. They had multiple boys hanging out at the counters talking to the teenage girl employees blocking a line of customers.
