The selection in this store is not that great. The prices are kind of high compared to other platos closets. The place is organized but kind of a mess at the same time. One of the busier Plato's I've been to. I've sold plenty of items in the past, and it's a great way to do some spring cleaning while making a few bucks in the process. Anything I don't sell I'll usually donate, so I'll usually go here first with any items I don't need just in case they are interested. I brought in a bag full of Lululemon, Kate Spade, and Coach. The lady told me that they would accept none of it because it wasn't in good condition. Everything was in amazing condition and some of it was bought not even 6 months ago!! This is my last time trying to sell with this store. Took my clothes to this location, first time in this type of store and did find it neatly organized. I did a quick browse and it looked to have some nice items. Now my complaint, I understood their requests for the clothing you bring in needed to be clean and folded. No problem doing that. Maybe 10-15 minutes later they text me to come in. They only could use 2 items( they still had tags on them) gave me $6. Ok, so be it. I didn't look in the storage bin until I got home and was disgusted how they just rummaged through everything I had folded and now they are all wrinkled. This review will be heavy in snark and judgment, just like the service at PC. A few weeks ago I head in with a reasonable basket for consideration. About 15 items total. 4 items were new dresses; 2 from F21, one LL tennis dress, and Dress the Population sequined bodycon. A month before NYE - all 4 were rejected. But here's the best part! The girl behind the counter was extremely confident when she told me that she could not accept any of my garments, but particularly the four dresses because they had been altered. This was curious to me, as I had not had the dresses altered, in fact, they still had the tags on them from being purchased brand new. They had never been worn at all. So I asked her, "why do you think these have been altered?" She then proceeds to hold the first dress up and show me the slit on the back of the dress. Where the slit is, she shows me a top, stitch X sewn into the base of the slit. She says "someone has sewn the slit closed" . Y'all I almost pissed myself I was laughing so hard at her. I then told her "Darlin' when you buy a new dress or a new jacket, the slit is sewn up to protect it from getting snagged. All you have to do is remove that topstitch. In fact, if anything that topstitch indicates that this garment has never been worn." Then took a pair of nail scissors from my handbag and cut the slit and pulled the single stitch out, revealing that the slit was perfectly fine. She then said to me "well I guess it's not new anymore and we're still not going to take it" Listen, I can deal with a lot of stupidity in my life. I work in customer service. Stupidity is actually my fluent second language. However if you are going to work in the garment business and you do not know the difference between a topstitch that is done by the manufacturer or designer to protect the garment and/or an alteration, I suggest you find yourself an alternative line of work. They did take the fake LV and fake Gucci bags I brought a week later. Dumb and dumber. read more

from time to time i find something worth getting from this location. i like that they're very well organized and keep the place clean. the employees don't really acknowledge you when you walk in and/or shopping. wish they could at least say if they have deals or if any event is going on in their store. i'd also like to see the lines go faster. each time i come here, i have to wait 6mins+ just to get checked out at the register. just wish they had kids clothes/items too. overall, still a good place to shop for low prices! read more

The girls working there are very unprofessional and give very mean girl demeanor. I brought in clothing that was in very good condition and they told me an hour. They offered me $8 for two shirts that were purchased from 5 below. There was plenty of good name brand clothing and shoes that were not worn more than once and there is so many clothes that look like my grandma would purchase for my children. Disgraceful use of Plato's name. I came in to sell clothes and my clothes were clean, up-to-date, and neatly folded. The lady over the counter said it will be a 5-10 minute search, I nodded and was looking around to shop. I came back only to hear her say "we are being super picky right now as we have so much stuff, we aren't taking any dresses, jeans, or athleisure". I nodded and continued shopping despite this. What was the point of even taking my clothes? Anyway, these young girls were acting as if customers were not shopping, very rude, and talking poorly about other employees. I eventually checked out and went home with my bags. I went through my bags again and either the lady with a bob folded them nicely and neatly just as I had folded them after washing them... or she did not go through them at all. 0/5 stars. I called the store 3 hours in advance to see what times they stop taking buys. They will tell you 3:00pm even tho it is highly inaccurate. I drove far to this location, called in advance specifically because of that, and made it before 3 however, because of their "policies" my buy wasn't excepted and I was told to come back because too many people are selling and they close at 6. Their "processing"time for buys is usually around 30-40 mins and can range into an hour however, the employees just fling customers clothes around and can complete the buy in less than 5 minutes, it has happened to me plenty of times. I only came with 2 bags, one only included shoes but because I called and checked to see, and didn't come into the building physically, my buy wasn't accepted. Highly do not recommend this location, the worse one I've been to thus far. read more

What a great experience! My sister and I stopped in this afternoon to sell some of our clothes. Everything was from either Pink, Under Armour, Hollister, or American Eagle. We called ahead to make sure they were still taking drop offs and we were so thankful they were! We originally stopped at the SCS location and they weren't accepting drop offs to sell. Bummer. We were kindly greeted when we walked in and because of a few drop offs ahead of us, we were told to wait an hour. No big deal! We shopped around some stores in the shopping center and headed black. To my surprise they offered me $30 for what I dropped off. I honestly wasn't expecting that much. The woman explained some of my items were slightly faded so they couldn't take it back but it was still a great steal nonetheless! What I think a lot of people need to realize is that you need to drop off items for what season it is. I dropped off a lot of summer items and that's why they took them. Save the jeans, sweaters, hoodies, etc for fall and winter. You'll have much better luck that way! read more

I've never had any issues here and have left with over $100 each time I've sold clothes. It's important to understand what kind of clothes they're looking for and the more you bring the better your chances of leaving with more are. The staff are hard-working and have never been rude - they're always busy and anyone that can't understand how tough customer service is clearly has not worked in it. Also, shout out to the staff working on Memorial Day weekend - it was super busy and I witnessed a pretty nasty customer who didn't like being told no to an item that had a stain on it and the manager, Jade, handled it very well. read more

Unfortunate because I went here to sell despite the reviews. I brought in quite a few items and I know that these franchises can't buy everything brought to them so I didn't expect much. I did however expect them to at least look at the items I brought. You can only imagine my surprise when I opened the bins I brought in so I could see what I was left with and I found my items folded and arranged in the same order as when I dropped them off. With them spending 20 minutes to go through two decently sized bins, I struggle to believe that they actually looked at everything and refolded my pieces in such a short time frame. Beware if you plan on selling here, they might ruffle through the first layer or two of items but anything below that will be lucky to get glanced at. read more

The selection in this Plato's closet is much better than others I have been to, despite being smaller. Even though it is smaller it's easy to spend a long time looking at everything! Good quality and decent prices. And a decent amount of options in every size. They also were super efficient with looking at my clothes I brought in and took some of my items. Another thing that was nice is that this Plato's closet did not have an overwhelming perfume-y scent like others do. The staff were polite and I would recommend. read more

Plato's closet is a scam. The staff members are rude and unwelcoming. Don't bother trying to sell clothes to this place. They are super picky about what they will take, even if an item is new with tags still on they won't take, or will offer to buy for a very low price then sell it for much more. I know they gotta make money somehow but they don't even offer a reasonable amount for your items. You also have to bring the clothes nicely folded in a bin, and whatever items they don't take they just throw back in the bin and give it back to you messy and wrinkly. I brought three giant bags here and they told me it would take an hour. Two hours later and I hadn't received a call so I went in and checked. I guess they had finished but forgot to call me, which was slightly frustrating. And to make matters worse, they told me they were buying nothing. Now, I'm not saying I have the cutest clothes ever, but I definitely had a lot of nice and in style stuff in there. So be warned - a trip here will most likely be a waste of your time. read more

No offense, but I don't think Plato would be too happy if this was his closet. It definitely lacks the sophitication, class, and overall style needed to don such a name. For some reason I just can't picture the philosopher wearing fuchsia sweatpants with "PINK" scrawled across his derriere. Maybe I'm not "hip" enough (aka I am over the age of 18) to be hitting up Platos Closet. I wasn't there to buy stuff because frankly, some of their "gently used" tops were a little dated for me-- and not in the timeless sense. Most of what I saw was Forever 21, Charlotte Russe (sp?), PINK, and Hollister. With the exception of Hollister as far as pricing goes... do you really need to buy that stuff second hand? I'd rather get a NEW $10 top from Forever 21 rather than a "slightly worn" one for $5. Perhaps that's just me. Taking stuff to sell there is rather pointless unless you have said brands mentioned above... You are only allowed to drop off a certain number of bags at a time and no matter how busy they are, it is a half hour per two bags. The nice thing about this location though, is that you don't have to sit there while they go through it (like the Okemos location) and have them explain to you why they can't take each and every piece. Please, you're not hurting my feelings-- clearly I am trying to sell this stuff to you because I don't want it anymore (not to mention it takes me forever to let things go). So Platos, you were thinking with that concept-- allowing the seller to leave the store. But something you weren't thinking about was teaching your employees some manners-- Plato's sales ladies, check your holier than thou attitude at the door please. Don't go in there thinking your going to find any vintage Dior-- all their merchandise is purely trend oriented-- and unfortunately because of this fast fashion driven store, they don't really focus on getting really GREAT pieces. I'd rather hit up a Salvo or Valueworld to be honest. read more

It's only been recently that the issues keep growing with this place. I sell clothes a lot, I have a problem. I don't partake in fast fashion tho, so all my stuff is nice and not cheap. Usually worn once or not at all. The last time tho was just enough. I brought in a bunch of brand new clothes. Anything that was previously worn I freshly washed and dried. Folded it nice and neat with all like items. Very organized. The one "buying" was super rude told me she had to much to do and come back tomorrow. Totally fine. I come back tho, and they went through one jewelry pouch and took that. 12 items for $11 or some bullshit. I got home and went to fold and resell somewhere else, they never even took any of the clothes out of my basked or anything. A total waste of time. But a few of the my expensive leggings that were on the top I've noticed are just magically gone. The more I continue to relook through I'm finding more and more missing. Not only did they waste my time in the middle of January, they also stole from me. Completely beyond rude. Being a retired "party girl" myself, I'd bet if everyone wasn't beyond hungover or still drunk some of these experiences might be different. This store sucks. Yes it is run by teenagers pretty much...and the most lazy ones they could find, too. My teenage daughter took in a bag stuffed full of shirts, hoodies and 2 dresses...all were very gently (if ever) worn some with tags even---- and either from Hollister or American Eagle...they accepted 1 hoodie 1 dress and 1 shirt. Gave her $12. WTF is the "criteria" ????? This was after waiting 2 solid days for these idiots to get around to sorting through the boxes and bags and bins of other customers clothes! Wow...5 girls standing behind the counter complaining they had to work, and not a darn thing getting done. Save yourself the hassle people...and leave Plato in the closet. read more

Wish I could recommend this place, but I can't in good conscience. I have shopped here a couple times (with no luck -- many of the clothes are cheap, stained, and smell) and have taken in clothes on a couple of occasions only to have only 1 or 2 items that the clerks themselves want to buy accepted. Plato's Closet says it wants upscale clothes, but what I took in were very upscale, clean, stain-free, freshly dry cleaned, IN STYLE, clothes from Europe and California where the cutting edge styles are starting to make it here to Michigan so I would expect the clothes to be accepted and fly off their racks within the next couple of months. Based on what I saw in their store, they are NOT looking for upscale, clean clothes. Everything I've seen in there is faded, pilled, stained, sometimes torn, and they smell like they were worn and never washed or dry cleaned. I get the impression that the store is just an outlet for the clerks to sell their own old clothes (instead of at a garage sale) and that they really aren't that interested in buying nice clothes, particularly very upscale clothes for the trendy teen and young 20s demographic. Another turn-off to me is that every time I've been in there, I've seen a number of brand-name fake/knockoff bags. Their disclaimer is that they can't guarantee the bags as an original/non-replica, but they still sell them for a higher price when they are clearly fakes. I'm surprised they even offer them for sale since fake/replica bags with designer logos/labels are technically illegal to sell. I am NOT at all impressed with this store and will not ever set foot in there again. The attitude of many of the clerks is very rude, and last time I was in there, a potential consigner became enraged at the service she received, began yelling that the clerks were racist and wouldn't accept her clothes because of that, and then she threw a pair of shoes out of her car window, striking the store's front glass window with a loud crash, as she sped out of the parking lot. If you're looking for class and a place to shop for clean, high quality used fashion, this is NOT the place. read more

Cheap designer jeans are the only reason I consider venturing into this overstuffed teenager closet. Joe's, Se7en, 7 For All Mankind, Lucky, and Citizens of Humanity can be had for a song (or $20, thereabouts) in most sizes, though 25 to 29 get the most love. This Plato's also stocks more True Religions in pint sizes than almost anywhere in the city save the Grosse Point location, though expect to pay closer to $40 for them. I like the ability to check over the merchandise before I commit to a purchase, the main benefit over hunting around on eBay or picking through Loehmann's and Nordstrom Rack. For all other purposes, Plato's Closet is like a recurring nightmare about high school when you open your locker and the contents fall out and bury you, or you're confronted with nasty looks from the Mean Girls if they deign to notice you at all. Customer service is a bit of a foreign concept except with one or two changing staff who went out of their way to provide help pulling something down off a display. Securing a changing room is easiest at non-peak hours, and I find showing up an hour before closing time allows for the best shopping experience: fewer patrons, staff more laid back/weary, and easier to move around. These aisles are skinnier than a hipster's jeans and organized into relative sections, but a battle to keep proper sizes in their place suffers many casualties. I usually do a circuit to make sure I didn't miss the designer denim section, a specific brand section that changes frequently, and a seasonal section that probably also has designer jeans. When in doubt, ask staff: almost everything in the store is searchable in their computer. If you really want something specific (True Religion jeans, size 29 regular or long), call ahead and ask them to look it up. At peak hours they'll all but hang up on you due to being busy, which I find annoying but understandable. This Plato's lacks for shirts in size medium or up, and shoes in more than size 7.5. I never find anything that fits or is in fair condition. The shoes can be quite nice -- I've seen Aerosoles, BCBG, Nine West, and other great brands at fair prices -- but they only exist in teensy weensy sizes that I fit in elementary school. (6.5 was loooong ago.) Good if you have small feet, not so much otherwise. Prices tend to be pretty reasonable, and I think they're much better on jeans than anything else. T-shirts, shirts, and skirts are pretty decent too and it's a great way to pick up a trend on the cheap. read more

THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE. You would think they would hire people with at least half way decent fashion sense/taste since the job is basically going through peoples clothing and deciding what is "cool" enough. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I wasn't aware that sweat stained wet seal t-shirts where the only thing worth filling your store with...if you're a girl anyways. If you're a guy they have a pretty amazing collection of clothing for all of your pimping needs. But hey! Whatever, if your greasy, Hot Topic goth staff thinks passing on Jeffrey Campbell & Betsy Johnson is worth it to make sure they have room for a hefty collection of clearly used and pilled sweaters that smell like a litter box then more power to you! read more

Keep in mind that their primary target market is 12-24 year olds. They only take things around two years old or less, because kids into trends are fickle and they don't want to be stuck with out of style stock. I have yet to find a great resale for 25+ year olds, so this is my alternative. If you want some basic tees or tank tops, especially in a certain color, they're great for that. They are hanging by color and then by size. I find this Platos to have a lot of turnover and pretty large stock. I would never pay full price for premium denim. If I don't get it at Off Fifth or Nordstrom Rack, I get it here. I've also found some really cute summer dresses for under $10. Just don't expect to find work or professional clothes. I've never had a problem with the salespeople. Sure, they're mostly young but so are most at casual teen clothing stores. Stick to teen brand names if you want to sell back. Yeah - still one star. I have tried this place a few times. I don't hang on to items long - I'm high maintenance that way. I also wear a size 4/6. I have brought in bags upon bags of hardly worn, clean, clothing. I have brought in denim jackets, leather jackets, new shoes (buyer's remorse), designer hand bags - you name it. I am consistently amazed by what they will and won't take. The other posters are right -they ONLY take cheap clothes. I brought in 4 pairs of 7 For All Mankind jeans - hardly worn - they didn't want any of them. I brought in sun dresses from J Crew and Banana - unwanted. New shoes from Macy's - nope, not interested. What did they take? A worn out F21 dress with deodorant stains, a pair of Soda platforms with the heels worn down and a dilapidated coach bag. I am trying for the life of me - to figure out their system. Try Regenerations instead. read more
