I went there for the first time on Thursday. Left my bags for 2 hours to browse the store and have lunch. When I returned they said they would buy 2 items for $4.80. One necklace and one leggings. Well.... I just went to unpack all the jewelry and they took it all. They total said they were only taking that one item and I took my bags home assuming all my stuff was there and they just kept it without paying me. So shady! This is solely describing my experience selling clothes, I have not purchased anything here. I have been decluttering and selling clothes online before my move, and have been looking for a quick way to get rid of more clothes and hoped Plato's Closet would be able to purchase a good amount. I brought in two huge bags of both new and older clothes from brands such as Uniqlo, Abercrombie, Hollister, Francesca's, and (vintage lol) Forever 21, only to have just 6 items purchased for $20, mostly shorts. I was quite disappointed since I felt that my clothes were of the same or higher quality than some of the clothes on the racks. I'm not even sure how thoroughly my clothes were examined since I was initially told an hour wait time but got notice to return within less than 30 minutes after dropping off my bags. It lowkey felt like college admissions trying to guess what they'd buy lol. I understand seasonality is a thing, but I was surprised that some of my dresses weren't purchased. I recommend bringing a smaller bag (so your clothes have a higher chance of being looked at) or just trying to sell online. Two stars since the store was very organized. read more

I'll never be coming back-- I took brand new namebrand items with tags, for example, a Michael Kors men's button up, and they still denied it because they were looking for specific brands. Their whole store is covered with flimsy little tops that can cover half of your boob yet don't accept quality. Customer service has decreased overtime. Employees ignore customers and are generally unpleasant. Last time I was here I waited more than 10 minutes in that tiny store to get someone to help me get into a fitting room. The employees were MIA and the one person at the cashier was not acknowledging me AT ALL. I didn't even end up getting their attention at all and just left. Today, I came in to donate/sell clothes. The person who helped me was rude. Their policies are inconsistent. I was told I can only donate one bag and would be paid electronically. But when I came to pick up my clothes that were not being bought, the person in front of me had TWO bags that they were picking up and was being paid in cash. This location is terrible. I was quoted a 1.5 hour wait on a Saturday. I dropped off my items and returned when I received a text my items could be picked up. Similar to the earlier reviews, I went to sell and they did not buy a single item. I've been selling to secondhand stores for over a decade. I do not bring trash items and only bring brand name items. Usually if a store isn't interested in your items, the buyer will at least buy one item so it doesn't feel like you wasted your time. Why would people want to sell here if you don't buy anything? The workers here are not friendly and act like they dont even care. I would not recommend shopping or selling here. read more

I first saw an ad of plato's closet on tiktok. I was getting ready for a concert to attend and I'm frustrated I didn't find Plato's earlier. There are a lot of good finds here. I got a bay area shirt and hat. Some zara jeans and a casual jacket. I think their style caters more towards Gen Z's and a little of millenials. They have about 4 fitting rooms at the end of the store. And right now they are fully stacked on athleisure (Lululemons, Gym Shark, Etc) The shoes are okay, and I saw a cute long champ bag somewhere but it had too many leather peeling off on the strap for my liking. Prices are okay. I wouldn't say they're cheap. Caps ranged around $10, some branded shirts were going for $14-20. I spent around $80 for about 5 items. It isn't too bad, but I feel like Good Will at Menlo Park or Salvation Army could still be at par with Plato's. read more

Been here both as a buyer and seller. As a buyer: - The store is not the most well organized but not the worst either. They have racks for specific brands or aesthetics sometimes near the front, and athletic wear near the back. The issue is that the racks are suuuuper crowded with clothing, so it's a bit hard to shop. - One time I went and they only had 2 dressing rooms open, which meant a long line for trying on clothes. Usually all 5 are open and the line is 1 person max. - Clothing is ok, mostly just contemporary brands, but they do have a lot of F21, H&M, and Shein/Fashion Nova on their racks, which is ..... meh As a seller: - Came on a Sunday afternoon, and the processing took around 1.5 hours with 3 ppl in front of me. - I brought in 23 items of clothing and 1 pair of shoes, and they took 8 of those items and the shoes. This came out to about $43 which I could take in cash or store credit. They do not give you a discount if you choose store credit. - They seem to like specific brands like Lululemon and Adidas. read more

My friend and I were walking around downtown San Mateo before our dinner reservation and stumbled upon this place. Huge layout that's filled to bring with clothing racks wall to wall. A decent selection of men's clothing but nothing that I wanted to purchase. My friend though had some luck in finding a cute pair of bright baby blue pants for a good price. I came to sell clothes and the staff were nice and working hard to get drop offs processed. The inside was fairly organized for what they have to manage with all the different varieties of clothing. I think I got below fair value for my clothes but I was not interested in selling the items myself. Factoring that with the convenience and the overhead to run the store I can see how they price things to buy. Yelped locations & this was the closest one from the East Bay across San Mateo Bridge. First time here, no one greeted us or told us what we needed to do when we walked in but saw a little iPad device . Self explanatory, Checked in with my CDL. Called prior & was on their store info. Once I was done, the gal behind counter said it would take 3-4 hours to get a buying quote. I think it's a way to deter you from dropping off as others who walked in after us just did that. Daughter and I had no other plans so we shopped around while waiting. It seemed to be less than an hour later when I got a text that my clothes had an offer, went to the register & was offered 0$ - lol Was told, too much of same items they had on the floor. All depends on who's looking at your items & if it's their style. On their website it tells you what they are looking for- They prefer Smaller sizes & current brands of course, fitted & urban styles, trendy. Fitting room available, Receipt does say 7 day exchange. I live about an hour and half away and come to this location when I see family in the area. My Plato's where I'm from does not even almost compare to the selections of curated styles the team at Plato's in San Mateo offers. I think the bad reviews are just misunderstanding they have an intended audience for the type of styles they have. I've noticed they accept actual vintage dead stock wear that appeals to the same vibe if you were to go into the stores on Haight! If you know you know! I'm a bit older than the normal crowd, but I love the variety, styles and sheer volume of selection. I'm also a staunch advocate of retail therapy and Plato's Closet offers the best! I've never left Plato's Closet without feeling great about my purchases and overall experience. The employees are super friendly, always willing to help and lend their advice on fit and style when I ask and I ask a lot. The last time I was there I bought about eight pair of jeans and some tops, all of my items were in great condition, fabulous styles and the prices were amazing. The Regional Manager happened to be there, she introduced herself and we chatted, absolutely friendly, helpful great customer service from her and the entire crew made me a customer for life. read more

One buyer was going to "buy" 12 items (but was out of cash for the day). I felt discrimated by this place based on my age. Came in and dropped a ton of cute clothing (3 huge bags) from great brands (lulus, reformation, etc.)--all in great condition and some even with the tags still on. Most of those clothes were from my 18 year old sister (I am in my 30s), and I was dropping them off for her since I had other errands to run in san mateo. I came back in and they said they passed on all my items. The girl working there went on to explain that "they are a strictly teen casual clothing store" (um, not true, their website says they are for teens and young adults), and that the clothing i brought was "too formal." While it's true that a small portion of my items were more on the "nicer" side (like brand new dresses/skirts from reformation and lulus that had the tags still on), most of the items were definitely within the category she girl mentioned (again, because most of the clothes were from my teenage sister). When i took the bags back, what stuck out to me is that the order/arrangement of the clothing in the bags looked exactly as it did before I brought them in. It looks like they didn't even really go through my items. I am also positive that my items were UNTOUCHED. This, plus the girl immediately telling me that they are a teenage only store, leads me to believe that they decided not to even look through my items because of my age. It's crazy to feel discriminated in this way, but I can't shake the feeling that their decide to consider purchasing from me was based on how I looked when coming in.
