My first time at Plato's and it was clean with no odor! I can appreciate that as an avid thrifter and deal seeker. I liked the location and most the items, but they are pricey. There's no way I would pay $20+ for anything preowned and not a luxury or designer piece. The clothes were extremely tight on the racks and I couldn't really locate my size with ease. It was a lot of stuff. It was like they need a good sale and quickly. If there was a sale, I would have been more opted to spend. They had a great shoe section. Location pretty average, no reason to come here instead of mall though. They need an "IT" factor like amazing stuff, prices or a favorite brand. read more

If I could leave zero stars, I would. This place is overcrowded to the point where you cannot even move through the clothing to see what you are looking at. The staff have an attitude about them that makes it such a negative experience altogether, not to mention that I heard one of the girls behind the counter say (about me):" I wanted to slap that bitch!" And of course didn't think I heard her and was completely unwarranted for the exchange that took place between us. Have no desire to shop at this place ever again and would definitely tell you to steer clear of going. Most of the clothing is trash and way too used to be selling at a consignment store... This is basically an overpriced thrift store. In fact, I have found much better clothing selection at the thrift store...and much more inviting and professionalism at thrift stores as well. read more

They are super picky when it comes to buying clothes off of you...don't expect to get anything more than $8 or anything at all! The staff there is very friendly and helpful. I have a 12 year old boy that loves the selection of brand name shoes there and the assortment of fun T shirts! This place cracks me up so much, but I like coming here to make a quick few bucks for a coffee or something. As stated in other reviews, don't expect to make any actual money here, even if you bring in designer pieces. The employees select items like blind people stuck in 2009's fashion scene (although they're pretty nice--this is probably just bad company policy). After a couple trips here, I learned to call in advance and ask what they're looking for at that time (to up my chances of them accepting my stuff), but that doesn't really help that much. It's so weird and unpredictable. Once, they told me they really wanted men's outerwear, so I brought in some clothes including a couple of nice, heavy hoodies in perfect condition. Instead, you put a piece of paper with bad handwriting on the door. And tried to claim this has been the rule for years. Which isn't true. And then doesn't even check your stuff and closes out your buy in less than ten minutes because she was in the wrong and called out for it. I simply asked one employee if I was in the correct line and she gave me the worst attitude, telling me I don't get preferential treatment. I don't know her name, but she was wearing bunny ears. For someone who works in seasonal fashion, Easter is in April. I drove an hour to Virginia and waited online for this woman to tell me that it would take four hours to go through my clothes. Personally, I have no interest in spending my day waiting in the parking lot of Mattress Warehouse. All but good luck with your Child Labored Shein, Forever 21, and cheap 2011 jeans! In past years I really enjoyed Plato's, but recently it hasn't been the same. They have a nice selection of clothes which is good, but its way to expensive for second hand. The prices are way to high for what you get. Second hand should always be kept at a lower cost. Secondly, the employees do not have the best attitude. Came to try to return a sweater with a hole in it (without receipt), i was trying to see if they would accept it. (It would be fine if they didn't, i wasn't there to start a commotion) After the lady told me that i couldn't return the sweater without a receipt i went to go browse what they just put out. I have no idea how they make their selection process. I brought in clothing that was from juicy, banana republic, and bebe. I also brought in a coach purse with tags attached and Tiffany&Co jewelry in original blue box and store bag. ALL of which was turned down. On their racks I saw the brand "faded glory " - a wal mart specific brand. And gloria Vanderbilt jeans as well as the kohls specific brands croft and barrow, sag harbor, and Cathy daniels which are brands that grandmas wear. I also saw wrangler's jeans. Yes!! For real! I just took a brand new pair of leather Keen mary jane (sterling city MJ) shoes to try and see if they would buy them - they are too small for me and I can not return them because I do not have the original packaging or receipt. They would not take 'water shoes' they only buy heels and fashion items. I understand this but find it ridiculous. The shoes I brought in are clearly leather and can be worn for nearly anything (dress, casual, work) ASIDE from in the water. These shoes retail for 90$ and have never been worn. Plato's closet has to be the worst Thrift store in Nova. I kid you not. Pros: They have dogs that walk around the store, boy oh boy do I love dogs. Cons: For people that are allergic to dogs they shouldn't have them in the store, it's a health code. I've been here a few times and every time I've had a terrible experience. I've come in with 3 huge bags of clothes before. Mostly unused & name brands. They normally never take anything & if they do. They want 4 things for 3 bucks all together. You think with such a picky selection of what they want that their store would have better things but mostly everything sucks. I think they use people and also don't know what they really want. Most the clothes the do sell look disgusting, not only but the style that's not up to date but also by how worn it looks. Plus no one in the store ever wants to help you out. This Plato's Closet is fantastic! I love it there so much I go once a week to make sure I get the name brands before everyone else. Unlike the other Plato's Closets in the DMV area this is the only one that actually cares about the name brands. If I wanted to pay for a shirt from target is just go to target where their brands are affordable anyway. They don't waste anyone's time with those brands. I go there for name brands not to look thru cheap brands all day. Mostly I go there to buy all the Free People stuff and I usually get them :). They also have a lot of Urban Outfitters and Guess brands. What's great about this store is the marketing. They have an Instagram account that I follow and they usually post when they have new items they think people may enjoy. They recently posted that they have new Adidas I went in the next day and I bought them. I even got a discount too. These sneakers retailed at $80 and I got them for $18. I love how that works and I love the people who do the buying there, they really know what people want. I didn't even know I wanted sneakers til they posted. And I knew I would never see s deal like this again. The staff is so nice and super helpful. I have def become obsessed with that store and if I weren't so embarrassed to show up everyday I would. I wish I could work there just so I can get first pick. This place buys and sells name brand items for such a ridiculously good price. Every time I sell there I'm shocked that I got more than what I expected and every time I buy I like to look up the items online to see the original price and it always makes me feel good. All those clothes you hate to look at and are ashamed of owning? That's all they buy here! Sell them, make some money, and then donate the rest to your local charity/church. Sure, they don't pay a lot, but really...no one will. Because you're selling ugly used clothes. At least someone is buying it, and some money is better than no money. Plato's target customer seems to be tweens in that awkward phase. Keep that in mind as you filter through your closet for your biggest regrets. This is a charming store and is literally a family run business. They are very kind to their customers and genuinely appreciate your patronage as a very small business. Become a regular and they will take the time to remember you. The managers of the store being in their dogs constantly. Though it was a shock to me to see dogs in a store for the first time, they are very easy to get accustomed to. The dogs are tame and very well behaved. I only wish my own pets behaved as well as the hounds at Plato's. =] As for the selection, I love it. I shop and find more at this store than anywhere else. Many of my favorite outfits have come from this store. Their prices beat everything else and as if that was not enough, they constantly offer you chances to acquire further discounts. Though they are very picky about the clothes which they purchase from their customers, they always have good reasons for not taking clothes. I entered this store after a closet clean out and had multiple (4) bags. This location has a two bag limit, which was abruptly brought to my attention. No problem. The associate actually suggested that I go to TJ Max and buy bigger bags to consolidate the four bags I had brought in. Seriously? So you'll take the same amount of items but want me to go and purchase bigger bags? Even more ridiculous was the attitude of the associates. I was rushed into checking in and selecting two out of the four bags, and then was barked at to make sure the bags were not "overflowing". Then, I was read the riot act of rules like I was a child. "You must pick up your items/payout today by COB". Again, no issue with the "rule"; the issue was with the condescending AF attitude of the associate. If you're catering to a certain clientele (I was advised this location catered to high schoolers)-expand your mindset and your business. More importantly, be welcoming and considerate to your patrons and sellers. I will never return to this location and I do not recommend anyone trying to sell items to this location. Go to Fairfax, that location was squared away, clean, and organized. The associates were friendly and welcoming. read more

I like Plato's Closet. They had one in Towson when I was in college and the one here still proves to be a winner for the most part. I brought in a bag of clothes and shoes to sell and they took three out of my twelve items. I only had to wait about 30 minutes and was able to shop while they reviewed my goods. They bought a new Armani Exchange bag, a jean skirt, and a pair of shorts. They passed on two pairs of barely worn and very cute heels because (their words) "they are too scuffed, but they're really cute shoes." I didn't say anything, but I did see several other pairs of shoes out on the sales floor that were in FAR worse shape than mine. Whatever. I can see how some people could get very frustrated with them passing on certain very nice items. Their criteria seems to be very inconsistent. I used my store credit to get a barely worn Oakley t-shirt and a practically new Guess top. They have some nice things, but you have to be prepared to dig. Don't come in here to shop if you're in a hurry. read more

Pro: if you don't mind digging through racks, they have some pretty decent stuff for great prices. Con: they give you less than 10% of what u paid for an item. They have me $2.50 For a Betsey Johnson skirt! U can make more money selling good brands at other stores in the area. A majority of the time when you go to sell here, they barely even go through your bag and then tell you they're being "super selective" on what they are buying. No offense, but the selection in this Plato Closet sucks. most of the items are legit crap that look like it was originally bought from K Mart or Target and worn down quite a bit. You'll see the clothes you have in your bag, and then a majority of the clothes already on the racks are... basic. Lots of basic t shirts. Nothing special about them, not "high sought out brands", so I'm not quite sure why they are claiming to be "super selective". You guys need bigger signs or communication about what EXACTLY you are buying, not vague. Overall pretty run down and not great of a selection to begin with. Also, the associates there are never really great either - as multiple people in these reviews have said - most of the time rude. I understand they hire high school students. Ick. Just ick. I would give ZERO stars if I could... The owner lets her and her daughters dogs run around the store... the dogs are everywhere! It smells horrible in there!!! I literally just watched the small dog pee in a corner and then wipe its butt on the ground. I will NEVER shop there again. Horrible customer service. If the dogs are really "service dogs" then they should have identification. Or at least a sign on the door, like seriously... and if they aren't service animals - train them, and try to become the responsible pet owner that you clearly aren't. My daughter found a white cardigan Ralph Lauren $12, a skirt, blouse, long sleeve T; I got an Armani silk dress and H&M shift dress, excellent bargain finds. Store was neat and well organized. SELLERS BEWARE! They bounced a check to my daughter around Christmas. I was told 12 days ago that they were aware of fraud on there account and they were sending refund checks the next day. Well, no check. Followed up with a phone call 5 days later and was assured all checks had gone out, "just be patient". Went into the store yesterday and spoke with a manager who "isn't authorized " to cut a new check but she took my name & # with the promise of getting in touch with the owner and a call back. Shocker, no call over a day later. Another call, different manager and was told there's 2 owners, only 1 writes checks, and no one can get in touch with her! 2nd owner can't write a check and is very difficult to get in touch with too. Beginning to sound very fishy! Will NEVER do business with them agin! And certainly will never recommend to anyone read more

I absolutely have had the best experiences here! I have now gone 3xs to sell some clothes and shoes. I was very pleased with amount I was offered. The girls at the front desk are so nice and very helpful! They are very good at explaining how the prices work and making sure that you receive the text message before you leave so you know when your offer is ready. The items in the store are pretty up to date and in good condition. I went today actually and they are not taking clothes right only accessories but they were great about telling me to come back after Thanksgiving. I was able to sell some shoes and walked away happy. I know I am only one person but I just wanted to share my experience. read more

Don't waste your time. The staff was rude in explaining their policies and why they refused to buy clothes, told me they were over-washed about a handful of jackets that I know are not over-washed. All the staff were making "eyes" at each other in front of me, made me feel very uncomfortable like I was back in high school.
