This experience was so disappointing that I felt like I had to share. I dropped my clothes off at 2:30 PM and returned at 7:00 PM the same day, only to find that they hadn't even gone through my clothes yet. Even worse, my items had been tagged with other people's names, and the staff had no explanation for how that happened. That's honestly concerning when you're trusting them with your belongings. Other Plato's Closet locations I've been to have an organized check-in system, but this location just has you write your name and phone number on a sticky note--which clearly isn't working. It felt very disorganized from start to finish. On top of that, the store itself was extremely messy. Clothes were everywhere, and the overall cleanliness was very poor, which made the experience even more frustrating. Very disappointed with how this was handled. Took us 20 mins to get there on my busy Saturday to find out that it not only takes 4 hrs of a wait but they wouldn't offer you you to pick up your items the next day! Its not my fault it takes 4 hours but you should offer something for the inconvenience because i have to be somewhere else by 5pm! They do not go through your clothes. They are kids working their first jobs and they send you back your clothes without checking. Today was the worst drop off with a total of 5 minutes before we received a text that they finished going through our bag. They were extremely busy and yet they somehow looked through it even though there was 2 people ahead of us. The clothes included hollister jeans, gymshark pants, and a few other big names. It isn't like the clothes are something they don't carry. It's a waste of your time to come here and get awful service. read more

I work in retail so I know what's in style for young kids. This place is really based on what the kids who work there like . They have ZERO knowledge of brands!! You will get pennies for clothes that you are better off taking it to a shelter to help teens . Or sell on Poshmark. I have taken the same clothes several times on different days and each day a different reaction to what they want to buy . One day it wasn't bought . Then 2 days later they bought it. Kids working there with unfortunately no knowledge . I'm not sure what the training looks like but from the my experience and reviews they really need to look at how they are training . read more

I've sold here a few times and they've never given me more than $10 I always just take the same bag of clothes and they take a few more items. I honestly think they're just over stocked and can't take too many at I time. I'd recommend if you have some extra time on your hands! read more

This place gets very busy and it's understaffed, but it's organized extremely well. Everything is in good repair and everything is cheap. A girl's dream come true. My kid begs me to bring her here and I don't even mind it. She cuts up the clothes and sews/designs her own fashions. -I gave birth to Andie from Pretty in Pink. Mean girl energy for SURE ! I came today around 4 pm with a bag of clothes . The girl working up front was so mean to her co worker and to myself . I wish I got her name . I dropped off clothes and mind you I have sold clothes there before and was told they love my style and to come by anytime . WRONG. After 30 mins I came to check in and none of my clothes were touched . They were in the exact order I brought them in and folded by myself . They said they couldn't take my stuff because of the brands when I had torrid items in there and other "better brand " stuff . From the moment I walked in I felt like I was in middle school. This Platos location has always been the worst, with both lack of cleanliness and lack of customer service. However the last time I was in, I brought in 5 bags of clothes/shoes and when they showed me the basket of stuff they were keeping it was like 5 things including a pair of brand new Air Force ones, all for $30. I ended up taking the AF1s out to keep them because that total was not giving, but when the girl went to take the shoes out of the total list of things, they were never put into the system! Someone there tried to scam me and steal the shoes. If you're gonna sell here make sure to see the itemized list before accepting $$ and letting them take your stuff. Would never sell here again after realizing not only how much of a scam this company is, but also that there are legitimate thieves working here. read more

I came in with quite a few bags following a garage sale and was greeted with attitude and poor customer service. I understand going through bags full of clothes is less than ideal, however isn't that your job? I've shopped and sold items at this Plato's closet multiples but after this trip it will be my last. I brought in a bag of clothes and some shoes (basically new). Now, I'm always disappointed with the price they give me but that is a completely different story. One of the pairs of shoes I brought in was a pair of Demonia Creepers, a very popular expensive online brand; the shoes retail for $104. I always watch as they go through my stuff, so as I'm watching the girl pulls out the shoes and gets all excited. Now, that's not the problem the fact that she PUT ON the shoes to try them on is the problem. Why are you trying on my shoes to which you haven't purchased yet? She proceeds to walk around in them for a bit before taking them off. While she's checking the price of what to offer me, she carelessly drops the shoes on the ground (resulting in scuffs marks which were not there before). I obviously declined their offer and never plan on going there again. Extremely disappointed. read more

HORRIBLE. The store shouldn't take clothes that smell like smoke from customers if their goal is to create an inviting environment. I dropped off my clothes and was told I would receive a call when they were ready, and that it would be about a half hour. Never did receive a phone call. Had to follow up on my own to find out that my clothes were waiting for me. I brought in two bags full of clothes, and they ended up taking maybe 3 items. Their reasoning was they were looking for more teen style items which is exactly what I had brought in. Items from H&M with tags still on them, jeans from American Eagle and Silver brand, even Vera Bradley items weren't even looked at. Don't waste your time. read more

I called ahead of time to ask what they wanted, and I was told denim, teen tops, and shoes. So I brought in jeans, cute tank tops and halter tops, and several pairs of dress sandals. They didn't take any of it besides a NICE pair of black jeans and sandals, and tried to offer me $4 for that. I took the items back. Then I got home and realized they never gave me all my items back!! I came back into the store and the lady working said "I was just about to call you" LOL like sure you were. Do not try selling clothes here. They didn't take any of my NEW clothes but took random things instead. Don't waste your time, I should've listened to the previous reviews. They also tried STEALING my Nike shoes and pretended that they didn't realize they didn't put them back in my bag. Make sure you keep track of everything you bring, they are greedy. read more

Plato's closet stores are very few and far between across the Chicago area. This one's up to 30 minutes away from my home, yet it's still closer than any other one of their stores by about 10 miles. I brought in a bunch of brand name men's clothes that have barely been touched. They wouldn't buy because they were "in the wrong condition." I asked what was wrong with them, and they wouldn't even explain. So basically, I just wasted a bunch of gas and time to get there, and got nothing in return other than "we can't accept your clothes." Well done Plato's! And I've been to other Plato's Closet stores. Don't expect anything different at any of them! read more

Specifically called this location to sell brand Lularoe and was told "yes, we actually have some in the store now." Drove over 30 minutes to be told "we don't take this brand" and they declined every piece of clothing I brought and was told "we only take teen appropriate clothing, not mom clothing." I was so upset by the way this young woman was acting that I asked for the store manager and was told "I AM the store manager." Very unprofessional. Very rude. I bought two pairs of Lululemon leggings from here over the summer. I was unaware of them being mid rise. Very good condition with a little pilling (as I assumed per thrift store) paid $30 for each of them. I never wore them and never got the chance to return them within the return period. I went to bring them back to sell and was turned down. The boy who helped me couldn't give me a definite answer why he didn't take them. At first it was because they only take mid rise and high rise (my pants were mid rise so I explained that) then the reason changed to we don't need them then the reason changed to they are pilling too much. RIDICULOUS!!!!!! I know they still have early 2000s Lululemon hanging up on their racks. Such a shame I really enjoy going there but this was so insane I will not be recommending this Plato's Closet anymore. read more

To avoid confusion, there's been some movement of retail stores in the past 3 weeks or so. New Uses moved from Villa Park to Schaumburg. Plato's Closet opened in the old New Uses space. The Plato's Closet in Oak Brook, closed, and the merchandise and staff moved to the new location in Villa Park, right next to Clothes Mentor - both owned by the same operation. This Plato's Closet is fine. They're very clear that if you're selling J Crew, most Anthropologie, Talbot's, Ann Taylor, Loft, haute couture, you need to go to their sister store, Clothes Mentor. Just as Clothes Mentor is very clear that if you're selling junior's sizes, F21, Abercrombie, and the Wet Seal variety, you need to go to their sister store, Plato's Closet. It's actually simple, and now that the 2 stores are so close together, only 1 trip is necessary for the option of 2 stores to buy your gently used or unused stuff you don't want. In all fairness to Plato's Closet, they don't want to see a bag stuffed with over 2 year old stuff that they can't sell. Sure, they should dump out every bag to scan its contents. If I see an employee who seemingly wants to get the job done in a nanosecond, I'll stay close to the check out desk and she'll/he'll know I'm watching. A little kindness goes a long way. When I came in and saw that there were several buys ahead of mine, I said I'd be back later and to take all the time they needed. That actually helps to allow them to really look at your stuff. My 2 issues with this store are 1)the price they pay on their buys is so insanely low, that the seller is only getting about 10-12% of the price paid for the item new. That's better than nothing, but it's really not much. 2) I don't want to know that you're going to buy what I am selling and that it'll never see the selling floor. Yes, I understand; employees can buy items (and probably at a discount), just like they can at other stores. I just don't want to hear about it. It's highway robbery and rather sneaky for this store to allow employees to purchase my buy item when I'm receiving $4.00 for an item I paid $127 for on sale, last year. I know it happens, but I don't want the practice in front of my face. These 2 above reasons are the reason for the 3 stars. Otherwise, this Plato's Closet is a fine establishment to sell and buy used clothing. read more

I love this place! Name brand clothes for very reasonable prices and in a very convenient Oak Brook location. Just a warning: this place can be a little bit tricky if you are coming here for the first time and if you use a GPS to find it. Apparently, there used to be two different Plato's Closet locations in Oak Brook, but one of them closed down. The GPS may or may not continually try to bring you to that old location and things can get confusing fast! So, I recommend just printing out the Google map directions before going. Plato's Closet has an excellent selection for just about everything apparel-related and then some. I like PC better than other consignment stores because of how everything is organized. There is a section for scarves, sunglasses, belts, and purses. Then, everything else is organized by items and size. So, let's say I know I'm looking for blazers. All I have to do is walk over to the blazer section, find my size, and go to town! My last visit here, actually, I purchased two blazers of high quality for under $30; they have served me very well the past year. They also have a really extensive jacket section (with North Faces, too), as well as a whole rack of mostly PINK sweatpants/yoga pants. I highly recommend going here with a purpose, as I alluded to above. If you go to browse everything and try on clothes, you could easily get lost in here for hours (but, hey, if you have the time to spare, why not indulge?). Something else I personally love about PC are the sizes! I'm a short person, so XS, S, and M sizes are my best friend. It seemed like at least half of the clothes there were in my size! Naturally, this made it a little harder to make my selections. While there are some items that are a little worn, this place usually does an excellent job of only accepting gently used name brand clothes. Everything is here, seriously. From a rocking black sequined cami to a pair of white Banana Republic capris, Plato's Closet has never done me wrong. Just writing this review gets me in the shopping mood. Plato's Closet: A Guy's Perspective Plato's Closet is one of those places I've always heard about but never actually been to. I recently moved, so I found a lot of clothing that I no longer wore that I just wanted to unload. Nothing wrong with my stuff at all, just clothing that no longer fit the same or I just didn't care for the style of anymore. Some were even brand new with tags still on them. I brought in two huge bags of all brand-named items--J .Crew, Guess, Banana Republic, Calvin Klein, etc.--stuff that easily totaled $500 brand new. I perused the guy section (which comprised a good 20% of the store) while they went through my bags for 30 or so minutes. I found absolutely nothing worthy of being purchased. Just a bunch of thugwear like Akademiks, South Pole, and Sean John. Like a gay alcoholic orgy, everything was faded and in no logical order other than being separated by top or bottom. I was pretty sure what I brought in was going to be a breath of fresh air to this sad offering. Fast forward half an hour, out of both bags I brought in, they ended up buying only one T-Shirt from me for a whopping $1.50. A tee that I wore probably twice and paid well over $20 for. The girl said they turned down the rest of my stuff because they were stained, which was an absolute lie but whatever. I kind of suspected it was because I didn't bring in enough Aeropostale, Roca Wear, or Tapout. read more
