Let me count the ways how much I miss and love Equinox…read more Yes, I know--it's a high-end gym. But you truly get what you pay for. I was a member of this location for over a decade, and since moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, I can honestly say there is nothing quite like it. The nearest one to me now is in Atlanta, and I still miss the San Mateo club regularly. This location has everything you could possibly want in a fitness facility--and then some. The Fitness Floor Downstairs is a beautifully air-conditioned workout space designed for people who are serious about exercising. No distractions, no crowds hovering by the windows--just a clean, focused environment. You'll find: * Full weight training equipment * Recumbent bikes, ellipticals, and treadmills * Dedicated spin, Pilates, TRX, and group fitness studios * A large open stretching area with foam rollers * Cold, filtered water stations throughout * Staff available for spotting if you're training solo It's efficient, professional, and thoughtfully designed. Locker Rooms & Amenities The locker rooms feel more like a boutique hotel than a gym. They are consistently spotless and fully stocked with: * Plush towel service * Spacious showers with teak benches * Steam rooms infused with eucalyptus * Complimentary razors, Q-tips, and personal care items * Premium Kiehl's products It's luxurious, yes--but also incredibly practical. You can comfortably get ready for work, dinner, or travel without feeling rushed. The Rooftop Pool One of the standout features is the heated rooftop pool. It has multiple lap lanes, cabanas, and water aerobics equipment, and it truly feels like a mini country club in the middle of downtown San Mateo. The pool is heated year-round, which means you can swim in any season--something you quickly get spoiled by. They even provide sunscreen from Supergoop!, along with full towel service. It's those little details that make the experience feel elevated. Classes, Spa & Services The class offerings are extensive and easy to manage through the app. Signing in is seamless--just scan your phone and go. Highlights include: * Yoga in a beautiful bamboo studio with HEPA filtration and ceiling fans * Pilates (available as private, duo, or small-group sessions) * A full-service spa on the upper level * A juice bar and retail shop featuring premium fitness apparel Everything feels intentional, polished, and well-maintained. Location & Convenience The club is located right in the heart of downtown San Mateo, making it incredibly walkable. There are restaurants, grocery stores, and cafés nearby, including one of my favorite bakeries and specialty markets. Parking is also surprisingly easy for a downtown location: * Two-hour validation * Surface lot, garage, and rooftop parking options That convenience makes a big difference in daily use. Value & Membership Yes, membership can be expensive. However, many employers offer corporate discounts, which can make the cost more manageable. In my case, the value absolutely justified the price because I used the facility regularly and took advantage of the amenities. Even when I relocated, canceling my membership was straightforward and professional--no pressure, no hassle. Bottom Line Equinox San Mateo set the standard for what a fitness club should be: clean, thoughtfully designed, service-oriented, and genuinely enjoyable to use. If I ever move to another city with an Equinox, I will join again without hesitation. Because at the end of the day-- life is short, and you should live well.

I was referred through the Four Seasons and booked spa services while in town for a week. While I paid full price and tipped accordingly, the overall quality of my services was disappointing. My facial, in particular, was not up to standard. I've had a HydraFacial before, and this experience was noticeably inconsistent. The serums that are typically left on the skin were removed, which was surprising and not in line with what the service should be. Meanwhile, my friend received a completely different (and much better) version of the same facial, including additional modalities and proper finishing--this level of inconsistency is a huge red flag. The massage was also underwhelming. The technique felt minimal and lacked intention, especially compared to my friend's experience, where she described a thorough, tension-relieving service that clearly went above and beyond. I did bring my concerns to the front desk staff before leaving, specifically about both my facial and massage. Unfortunately, the response was disappointing--they looked at each other as if unsure how to respond and offered no feedback, follow-up questions, or attempt to address the situation. At that point, I simply paid and left. (I will add that our initial encounter with the spa front desk girl who gave us a tour was exceptional and had great customer service etiquette. Sadly, she left as I was changing.) Customer service unfortunately didn't improve afterward. I inquired about Pilates Reformer sessions, and the front desk staff were less than helpful. I also followed up via email and didn't receive a response until a week later--which, again, is disappointing for a business of this caliber. Overall, between the inconsistent services, lack of accountability on-site, and delayed customer support, I left feeling that the experience did not reflect the price point or reputation. I had high hopes, but sadly, I'm not very impressed.

Gorgeous and well-maintained facilities from locker rooms with sauna/hot tub to group exercise studio. Wonderful group fitness program with outdoor/indoor boot camp classes, mind and body classes and cardio dance. Brendan is just adorable--rainbow and sunshines--that's what I call a pop dance party. Yet, incredibly professional and really knows how to manage the room. What a gem. Iting is an amazing artist who encourages self expression while still delivering a cardio workout. Maricela is a fantastic instructor who specializes in salsa and has the best Latin music playlist in the city hands down--you can try to stop dancing but you'll fail! David Coelho's Ignite class is so hard, I need to hug my kids' stuffies after I'm done to self soothe :). I adore the guy! He's exactly what I love in a good coach. Manny's rooftop boot camp rocks. I don't know what's the best part: the music, the views or the intense workout. It just all works together so well. Staff are professional and members are a delight. And here's the best hack you should know about: if you're part of a group membership, you basically pay the same amount as you would pay for other gyms that, in my opinion, offer so much less in value. Definitely worth the drive to North Beach.

Unfortunately, the experience behind the scenes completely unraveled that goodwill. When I needed to cancel my membership due to a major life transition (leaving a well-paying job to return to school for nursing), I was met with zero flexibility, no real consideration of timing or loyalty, and a rigid, policy-first response that felt cold and dismissive. I was charged again after canceling, with confusing explanations and unresponsive communication. What should have been a straightforward, human interaction turned into weeks of frustration and escalation. The broader experience didn't help. The bathrooms are consistently grimy for a club at this price point, the vibe skews heavily toward entitled, out-of-touch "old money" members who are seemingly retired and love to spend their time complaining, and the business itself feels like it's run by an outdated boys' club that hasn't caught up to the reality that community and quality customer support actually matter now. Bay Club markets itself as community-focused, but when it mattered most, that value didn't show up for me. It's a shame--years of great swims were ultimately overshadowed by how poorly this was handled.

I love them and the front desk staff and cleaning crew--everyone is very friendly, helpful, understanding, and accommodating. Multiple times, I have booked courts and had to cancel (or mixed up my court times) and they've helped remedy the situation. Facilities are very nice--I love the pool, hot tub, locker rooms, and courts. The lights are good for night playing and there's some nice seating by the pickleball courts. The views are so good--I love seeing high rises and the Bay and Salesforce Tower looming behind over the club. I love the app for booking courts (and also book classes at Bay Club SF which is further down along the Embarcadero.) Gateway also has a few classes (like a weekly yoga on the grass.) Location is very convenient near downtown and the financial district. It's served by multiple Muni lines and BART and Muni Metro, and there's street parking and a small lot too! My one nit--I miss when there was more workout equipment and more socials and classes! I wish more people went to drop-in pickleball.
