As I write this review today, Friday, June 18, 2026, I took my two granddaughters to this establishment, Playa Bowls in Denville, NJ. The attitude displayed by a young girl at the counter, likely a high school student, was the most appalling I've encountered in my 75 years of life. As I placed my order first, I instructed my granddaughters to do the same. They both proceeded to order theirs, also Mango smoothies. I paid and left a tip. As this was our first time at this store, I asked questions about their products, but she looked at me as if I were ignorant and refused to answer, or made believe she didn't hear me. When she came back with our order she handed over only 2 smoothies. I reminded her that I had ordered three smoothies, as she had asked me about the size when I had ordered mine. Then, the girls ordered theirs. Where's the confusion? She clearly had no interest in being there working. She didn't even smile or apologize. She was extremely rude and asked me if I wanted to place another order. At that moment, I declined and left the store without retrieving the tip I had left in the jar when I paid. There was another person in the back, whom I assume was the manager. Surprisingly, she neither intervened nor offered an apology. This is not an appropriate way to run a business. Regardless of the quality of your product, the welcoming attitude reflects the overall image of the business. I did not find that at Playa Bowls in Denville, NJ. The wait time was very reasonable, even with other customers ahead of us. I really appreciate that I could order gluten-free granola with my Nica banana bowl. For two bowls, the total came to about $26, which felt a bit steep, but we both ended up getting 2-3 meals out of it, making it a better value. What can I say? I love Playa Bowls! I've been eating these since they first opened in Manhattan, what, like 10 years ago? Now you can't throw a stone in NJ without hitting at least two locations. Not that I'm complaining! One thing I love about Playa Bowls is that, in my experience, they have been consistent from location to location. I've never gotten a bowl that wasn't great. My forever go-to bowl: Pura Vida - remove honey - add peanut butter - add Nutella No other açaí bowl compares. Two notes for this location: 1.) Don't come to this location if you're in a hurry. Even if you preorder online, you'll still be in for a wait. Last time I ordered in person here, I waited over 40 minutes for my bowl to be ready. 2.) If management is reading this: please turn on the ability to order from Uber Eats to pick up. The food was very good and met expectations, while the ambiance was clean and organized. The challenges I encountered were specifically related to the service. Ordered a standard bowl and asked to have 1 items eliminated from the order. The customer in front of me received their order, naturally thinking mine is next. Ok, so let me begin by saying a friend has been raving about Playa bowls for a year now and I had yet to try it out. With this new location in denville, my husband and I popped in for an afternoon snack thinking it was healthier than the ice cream shop down the street. Wow. The coconut bowl was delicious, and more food than one person could eat. We shared it, which was perfect. It had a coconut cream base with oats, coconut shreds, fresh bananas, and sliced mangos. I love playa bowls. Sometimes the line are a bit long but the workers are always working hard to get the order done ASAP. But I feel like the employees are very judge mental. Also, I went in one time and bunch of kids came in. Calling there "friend" fat. That there is no room in the restaurant because of her which was not true. She wasn't what her "friend" was describing her as. They also started trouble by going in the back and getting told if they don't stop they'd be kicked out but preceded to do stupid teenager things. My pickup time was 12:50. I arrived and asked the status at 12:45 and was told that it would be out soon. At around 1:10, when it was clear it wasn't coming out any time soon as people who had placed in-person orders were all getting their orders before mine, I checked again. They could not find my order. In other words, it had not been prepared nor was it on the docket to be prepared. I could no longer wait so I asked for a refund. While the one person was getting my refund all set, another worker told me that in the future I should "tell them when I arrive so they know to look for my order." When I told her I had 25 minutes ago, she just shrugged her shoulders and said "Oh." I've regularly visit a few Playa Bowls locations and I am always patient and understanding. I love me a good playa bowl. It doesn't make me feel as guilty as when I eat ice cream even though it's still a carb bomb. I always get the Nutella bowl. Its kinda steep at $11 but its worth it every time. I've gotten the Dolce smoothie before, but it was a complete let down. It was super super thick and not in a good way. It was just way too much banana and when you look the straw out there was a string of banana goo sticking from the straw to the smoothie. I couldn't really taste any other ingredient. I attended this venue for a smoothy at 3:45pm on a Wednesday. There were 7 employees that I could see. 1 on register, 1 on in-store orders and 1 on online orders. The rest were either goofing off or prepping/cleaning. I waited to order with 2 people in front of me for 8-10 minutes. I then waited for my order for 20 minutes. I actually watched as only one person was on blenders while 2 boys were on their phones sipping on smoothies. Only the 3 aforementioned employees helping with orders. After the kid on blenders finished the orders in front of me he finally said, "Has anyone made THIS smoothy," (mine) and I answered, "NOPE." I said, you realize you've been doing these alone the entire time I've been here. Then he had to wait for a clean blender. By the time he made mine it was 30 minutes later when I left with my drink. We usually go to Millburn or Montclair but we were not too far away from this one. Surprisingly, on a Saturday night, we found parking almost right in front of the store. Free parking, none the less (unlike my regular locations). PLUS!! The size and feel of the store was real cool. I especially liked the lizard mural on the walk near the back. There's also some hidden away seating back near the bathrooms. The bowls were good as usual. We ordered the Nutaya, minus coconut flakes and the Nutella, subbing the coconut flakes for kiwi. I normally don't mind a little coconut, but only if it's in small size and quantity. The girls working were very friendly and more engaged than I've noticed at the other locations I've been to.
