The other drinks were tasteless, it could simple be the nature of those particular drinks but I did not take a liking to them. So The Purple Mermaid Smoothie from Playa Bowls is a protein-packed, tropical superfood blended together. It has what they call Playa Pitaya or a dragon fruit base, bananas, pineapples, vanilla protein, blue spirulina, and coconut milk, with a swirl of coco whip. There is a large list of items to choose from so we will see how it goes. The hostess is neither friendly nor off putting. Always walk by and finally decided to try. They have a variety of bowls and bases. Outdoor seating and beachy indoor vibes. I got the coco craze bowl. Coconut base, flax seed granola, coconut flakes, mango, banana, and pineapple. Regular size bowl. I downloaded the app and got 15% off as a first time order, so paid just over $15 with tax and a convenience fee of 50 cents. Overall it was a great bowl, large enough that it lasted most of my work day. Only con is the coconut base melted pretty fast after I picked it up from the store, so it quickly became a juice with fruits. Would try again. read more

I am extremely picky with acai bowls. I was craving one while in the city. I like when the acai base is thick like sorbet, but still has a prominent flavor. We've stayed in FiDi the last couple times we've been in NYC and passed Playa Bowls on foot. I saw great reviews on Yelp and was feeling hopeful. I'm glad we stopped at this location because I really loved my bowl. While my all time favorite acai bowl can be found in a small local place in North Carolina, this has to be my second favorite. They were generous with the toppings and had such a delicious taste. I loved all the topping choices they had at Playa Bowls. There were so many different types of bowls you could get. The staff was extremely kind and made our bowls pretty quickly. I liked that there were seating options outside. We sat outside and enjoyed our bowls before our flight home. It's a pretty tiny shop inside, but there are bar window seats available. My fiancé enjoyed his bowl too. If you're craving an acai bowl, I highly recommend stopping by this shop. read more

SUMMARY: Q - How many Playa Bowl (50 Fulton Street) employees does it take to make a cup of fresh-squeezed orange juice? A - I don't know since the three employees on duty in the store when I came in proved wholly incapable of making one! REVIEW: AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! - Store is open until 10pm nightly. I walked in at 8pm, and was the only customer in the store (as far as I could tell there were no pending delivery/pickup orders). Behind the counter were 3 employees, including the bearded "tough guy" manager (more on that later), who was focused on dragging garbage bags through the store (highly unappetizing). I ordered two LARGE orange juices, to which the cashier responded "which size do you want?" Instinctively I knew this was not going to be a good experience. Again, I remained the only customer in the store. After 5 minutes, one of the workers began slicing carrots, an assortment of vegetables and some oranges, and began putting them all in the juicer. This seemed extremely strange, as I was the only customer, and all I wanted were two orange juices. Another 5 minutes pass - No orange juice in sight! At this point, I realized that this inept assembly of clueless workers were just going in circles, unable to produce a simple cup of juice. I asked for my money back, and expressed my deep exasperation with the (non) service I received. Instead of politely acknowledging his incompetent staff, complete lack of service, or even offering an apology, the (bearded) manager began to get all "huffy" - implicitly threatening me with physical violence, and claiming that my order was being worked on - despite the fact that I could see the employee responsible for preparing my order putting carrots and other vegetables in the juicer. Perhaps, going forward, Mr. "tough-guy" manager should stick to garbage-duty (which seems the perfect fit for his limited/non-existent customer service skillset). He should definitely not be put in any customer-facing position. To all potential customers - do yourself a favor and avoid this place (see also one of the other reviewers here that encountered similarly poor service). And to "mr tough guy" manager who wanted to throw down: when you're done taking out the trash, and mopping the floors, feel free to come by 99 John Street, apt 2312 (ask for Steve), for a lesson you won't soon forget ... in how to make a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice! read more
