I live a couple blocks away and it's very convenient for me to walk over. I got my brakes replaced there a couple years ago. After I drove it off the lot, I noticed a rattling noise when I braked. I lived with it for a couple months and brought it back. I told them it makes a sound when I brake and they said they would take a look at it. When they told me the car was ready for pickup, they said they couldn't hear anything and the car was fine. I explicitly told the guy at the counter that there's something there, and if he can make a note that I came in because I imagined I would be back shortly after. I finally had some time to come in again over a year of rattling. I leave my car there for the whole day. I took my dog for a walk at 4pm and I stopped by to check on the car in case I missed the call, they said it wasn't ready yet. I walked around the block to see my car on the street with the window down (not a huge issue, the neighborhood is safe). Less than an hour later I get the call that it's fixed, something was loose in the brakes and they fixed it. I asked him if they're going to cover it since it's been rattling for a year, he said that 'the boss said he can't do it' and quoted me 200 something for an hour of work as well. At that point it's not like you have a choice, you just pay and leave a bad review so another one of our neighbors doesn't get scammed. read more

My sister lives nearby and has been going to Playa West for years, so when our 2006 Toyota Matrix started having strange issues starting we decided to try Playa West ourselves. My husband typically does most of the work on our car and only brings it in when he can't diagnose it or the fix is too big to work on in our apartment stall space. He likes to ask lots of questions of the mechanics so that he can better his own knowledge of how to work on the car, and he often is willing to pay to get something diagnosed and then fix it himself if he can. I went to pick up the car recently and talked to Willie, who had an encyclopedic knowledge of our car right off the top of his head with barely a glance at any of the paperwork. They are so kind and helpful, they weren't able to recreate the problem we were having so they didn't charge us for the visit despite doing lots of diagnostics on the car, and told us to bring it back in without making an appt the next time the issue happens. Hate writing bad reviews but here we go. First off, if you don't know about cars this is not the place to go to. They tried convincing me my spark plugs needed to be replaced, and nope still had at least 30k miles left when I talked to my trusted mechanic. Then they try to sell me all these other things, windshield wipers, completely clean the coolant, filters, and new tires. I just got new tires less than two years ago and I don't drive a lot so this was all a lie. They really tried to upsell me on things like my windshield wipers. It started to become comical to hear what else needed to be done with my car because it seemed like my car need a total face left when really my car is not that old and barely driven. I was really hoping to like this place considering it's so close to me however, after this experience, and how much they were trying to upsell me and overcharge me I don't think I will ever be back unless I have an emergency. read more

I've been taking my car here for 5 years and have had a good experience. I've always found them to be honest, even though I'm a woman going in alone. The staff are always friendly. And my husband just used them for the first time for a slow leak in his tire, and they repaired it for $41 instead of trying to sell him on a new tire. WORST service both in terms of the work that was done to my car AND for their horrendous lack of customer service. i had to take my car to them multiple times to fix issues they created. - a simple oil change : i went home with a car leaking oil as they forgot to seal it properly (i had to wait there for 2 hours for the 'quick fix that will take a minute') - a problem with the tailgate : the car sat there for over a week, i had to call multiple times to get an update and was told i would get a call back - i never did get a call back. once i received the car back, more issues that were related but apparently 'not their problem'. - credit card charges : first, they overcharge for the 'services' they provide. second, they ask you to pay in cash or check - or else they charge YOU a credit card fee - beyond ridiculous. Just read some of the previous reviews and you'll see a common theme. I've had these guys hold onto my car until the last minute, not even call to tell me it's ready to be picked up. Most recently they gave me an estimate to replace my radiator, it was almost $1,000. I told them I've replaced an old radiator before in a Nissan Altima and it isn't complicated. They said newer cars are more tightly packed so it takes more time. That's a true statement but I ended up doing the repair myself in a few hours. Radiator cost me like $150. I recently went to change my oil after they did it the last few times. The gasket around my drain plug is falling apart and they made no mention of this. I also have what seems to be a leak around the oil pan and they never mentioned it either. Last time I was in there the owner went to charge me for the repair and complained that the credit card fees are too expensive and they're passing the cost on to the customer. That's not something you tell a customer, at least work the fees into the estimate. You run a business, you shouldn't be passing on processing fees to customers. The only positive I'll give these guys is they always stress that they only use quality American parts. They dissuade you away from using cheaper parts which is important. read more

I don't drive a lot. But I wanted a reliable local mechanic. Initially took it in for an inspection and it seemed like they wanted to replace everything in the car - including the two new tires. Settled on a smaller hit list of oil change etc. Been in a few times since and everything needs a diagnostic before they can work - $156 a pop. Check engine light went on earlier this year and I took it in. They fixed it - said it was sensors. Took it back as the check engine light was on again - they fixed it and charged almost $700 including another $156 diagnostic. Went to pick my car up and was told my headlight was out. You guessed it...it would be $156 diagnostics + parts + labor. That was the last straw. Super suspect. I won't be back. PS...I looked up YouTube - bought the OEM parts and fitted new lightbulbs within an hour. Used the $156 to buy myself beer and my wife flowers :) read more

Took my car in for an oil change and they didn't even replace my filter! Had to do it myself. See photo of dirty oil filter. I also dumped out all the oil they supposedly "changed" and it was completely BLACK and so dirty - so they absolutely did not change my oil! Just dumped new oil in with the dirty oil and called it a day. They also gave me a list of services I "needed" which was completely bogus. Wanted $573.88 for a spark plug change, I pulled my spark plugs and they are in nearly perfect condition still with appropriate gap and all. Cabin air filter cost me $12.99 and they wanted $91.57 to do the job. This place is highway robbery - just downright dishonest! read more

I love that there are still honest mechanics in the world. Playa West are not only reliable and reasonably priced and understanding of costs (needed more service than I could afford and they said what was urgent and noted what could hold off till my next oil change. Worth telling why I started using them. I live down the street and needed to replace my license plate. Unfortunately the bolts were rusted and i couldn't do it on my own. I drove it in to ask if they had any tool that could help and they ended up working with me for 10-15 minutes to lean in and loosen the bolts. Charge? Tip the guy. Coolant STILL leaking. Took to another shop. Found out radiator cracked at top radiator hose and down the side of the tank where top hose was replace. Couldn't even pressure test. Hooked up pressure tester and started SPEWING coolant from crack in tank. Told shop how much I was charged for 2 hoses and a flush and shop said "Must have been Andy"-Owner of Playa West. All I could do was burst out in laughter. So Andy told me he pressure tested and found no coolant leaks which was obviously a lie. Now out ANOUTER $540 for a new radiator THEY damaged. On top of that he wanted another $200 for 2 heater hoses that are easily accessible and only 12 inches long WHILE doing other hoses. HELLO? Overlapping labor? Other shop said Andy has been overcharging community for years. Go figure. Well the community is going to start being informed Andy. read more
