Anyone who's thinking of signing up for a Players Sport & Social Group league - I seriously urge you to reconsider. They refuse to protect their players from abuse and harassment. During one of our games a member of the opposing team slapped one of our players on the butt, called them 'thunder thighs,' and told them to 'stop being a little bitch' when they complained. Teammates then yelled obscenities like "grab 'em by the pussy" to taunt our team. We brought a formal complaint to Players, per their conduct policy, and they refused to take action. Their reasoning included: -The opposing player was 'just drunk' -There's unwanted physical contact in sports all the time (note: the slapping was AFTER the play was over...) -It was a competitive game (irrelevant, and it wasn't - we won by slaughter rule) -Pro players slap ass all the time -"There's nothing we can do about it - call the police" -He didn't intend to harass anyone -It won't happen again This is appalling logic that's frequently used to excuse (often male-initiated) sexual harassment. They easily could and should have suspended the player. Instead they told us to just get over it and keep playing because "boys will be boys, especially when drunk." read more

Don't recommend co-ed soccer 7v7. League rules don't make sense. Ref will give your player a yellow than make he/she sit out for 3 minutes so you're down a player. What is this? Hockey? Man advantage rules? Playoffs? Apparently they don't know how to schedule because they'll put double headers in the bracket for some teams whilst the other won their "bye week". Essentially teams in Quarterfinals will face off, then right after the winner has to face the semi-final team on that same day. So a fully rested team vs a half gassed team from a previous match. The league playing at my local park leaves a disgusting amount of garbage--no attempt to clean up the mounds of beer cans, plastic bags, etc. I have tried to reach out to Players Sports Group but there is no real contact information for them and their phone number is an endless loop of recordings and dead ends. Wish I could rate it 0 stars. Played in this league twice, both times were very bad. It's as if the refs they hire are not trained or don't know how to play the sport. We had the same scorekeeper throughout the league and he didn't pay attention to which teams scores. The price for the league is too much for only giving us cotton t-shirts for jerseys. FIND ANOTHER COED SPORTS LEAGUE I have played in several different community sports leagues in Chicago and this is by FAR most incompetent administration I have ever encountered. Last minute cancelations, reschedules, poor/no communication, etc. is the norm. Even our umpire often seemed like he was uninformed by the office on what the schedule should be We called and asked if they could accommodate a reschedule one day. They said no -- that's fine. We told them we will find subs. They took it upon themselves to call the other teams (on a double-header day) and just make the executive decision that our team forfeit. Never told us they did that or communicated ANYTHING to us at all. We didn't even know until 30 minutes prior to game time. It is a joke and completely overpriced. Do not waste your money. read more

As a pretty active Chicagoan, mostly as a volleyball player, there isn't a better sports group to play through than Players. I have played multiple sports through the others and I've always been happy with PSG. I've done soccer and volleyball - both indoor and beach, and I have to say, they know what they're doing. I'm a avid volleyball player so I'm typically playing in a league every season. Their indoor setup is the best around. First - the gyms they get are ideal for a person to get to and fit what is need for the sport. These aren't grammar school gyms where you can hardly fit your team on the actual court or have odd dimension lines and equipment that looks either from the '50s or just purchased from the local Play it Again Sports (read - poor condition) - their gyms have regulation courts, regulation nets and proper equipment. Secondly, they run very efficiently and the key to that is having referees. Their refs are always fair, they're extremely knowledgeable about the sport and make sure that games get started and end on time. This, compared to the others where they let their players self-referee themselves which makes games run longer - because there is no non-partisan person ruling on the game so teams argue about rules and forget to keep score etc, etc... Even as a person who would rather play indoor than beach, their beach is run just as well. Though there aren't refs - due to the number of teams playing, they are still run very well and their equipment is always good. I've also done a sports trip through them - the Bulls/Pacers first round game in Indianapolis. They did a great job of getting people to and from the game - tickets were cheap and the seats were very good. Would have been better had the Bulls won but....hey, good times either way. PSG does a great job for active adults to continue enjoying the sports they love in a fun and competitive environment. They keep their schedules tight and on time, have quality equipment and the fact they have refs means you don't have to worry about arguing with the other team about not knowing the rules and just play your game. it's a fun environment that I'll continue playing with them. read more

I will start out with the positives...Players Sports Group seems to have a friendly management staff. The umpires show up to the games (not sure if this is a positive because the umpire always shows up in other leagues, too), but they have no idea what is going on. Now, if you are reading this review to decide if you should play for this league, the answer is absolutely not. I will give examples. Let me preface by saying that this league is huge and poorly run. We all know that the larger you are...the more you must be organized. Example 1: For the first round of the playoffs, my team won by forfeit because our opponents went to the wrong field. The umpire at the wrong field did not even check, DURING THE PLAYOFFS, if the right teams were playing. He just let them play only to discover after the fact that the team that supposed to be playing us was on his field. Basically, two teams that were not supposed to be playing each other played a game that everyone thought was real, including the umpire. All 13 of my players wasted 2 hours that day. The league's solution....our official WIN BY FORFEIT IN A PLAYOFF GAME WAS REVERSED and we had to make up the game. Fault of the umpire or fault of the other team for not understanding N, S, E, and W? You decide. Example 2: If it rains for 10 minutes at the North Avenue field, they call the game. One might infer this is out of pure laziness of the league. Others may claim the fields flood easily. Both are true. Example 3: Our rescheduled game against the team that went to the wrong field was double-booked on a field that already had a game going on. The umpire (from the SAME LEAGUE) at that field did not have any idea that our game was scheduled on his field - he showed me his printout from the league's management staff. We were then moved to another field (third attempt at playing the game we had already won by forfeit) and started 20 minutes late. Players Sports Group Summary - inconsistent and/or rude umpires who often have no idea what is going on; poorly organized; more expensive; North Ave fields flood easily and are hard to get to; and let me say again - POORLY ORGANIZED. If you are thinking about spending $1500 here, I would think again. read more

The leagues at Windy City Fieldhouse, FFC - Gold Coast, DePaul, Hamlin Park, North Avenue Beach, Montrose Turf Field & Clarendon Park I can specifically say are great leagues with consistently fun teams playing each season. Of course it isn't easy to communicate to the masses, but these guys have a Rainout Line in place that has a webpage, app & text notifications to get info to people in real time. Does it rain at game time sometimes and games get cancelled? Of course! We live in Chicago and no one can control the weather. But I wouldn't play anywhere else in Chicago. read more

This is the worst recreational sports group I have ever played for in any of the states or cities in which I have lived. I signed up to play volleyball two separate days for a 5-week period. They didn't have enough people to play one of the days and asked people to switch days of the week. They only reimbursed my payment after I contacted them to do so after the leagues started which seemed super shady. They replied basically with "you didn't reply to our email about playing on Wednesday so we assumed we would just keep your money until you bothered us about it." There was a group of about 25 people playing at the courts on a Sunday and the tall guy who sets up the courts kicked them off even though there were enough courts for everyone to use, he said he just wanted empty courts between the nets because he "paid good money not to have anyone else use them" when the people said the park system said there was no charge until June. It was poorly handled and the guy seems like a total jerk. I finally checked the schedule to play and saw I had a 6:30 pm game on a certain evening. I have to run home from downtown and back just in time to make 6:30 pm games. I even had to pay for a taxi this certain them so I wouldn't be late. And when I showed up, I found out they changed the time of my game last minute to 7:30 pm. So I wasted my money for the cab and rushed around for no reason. With all this other sports groups out there, there is absolutely no reason to pay for his one. Try anything else. read more

Don't believe their free tshirt hype. They conveniently ran out of tshirts when we were supposed to get them. For whatever reason, they didn't have enough for our whole team. Other years, they didn't bring them for us at all. I still want my tshirts, damnit! In more useful seriousness, though, I never had too many problems on their teams. The fields were in good condition and the games always started within 5 minutes of when they were supposed to. Props to the umps who liked my matching repeated tshirt and striped knee high socks combo. Also, gotta give credit to the ump who called my slide into 3rd base safe when I was blatantly out. He must've felt pity for my bloodied body thanks to sliding on the keys accidently left in my pocket... then again, maybe the dust just clouded his vision. read more

Beach volleyball is a huge Chicago summer thing. And this summer, I wanted to rock it on the court so I decided to sign up for a v-ball clinic through the Player Sports Group. I'm a HUGE fan of their volleyball clinics. The instructors are from EVP tours. My girl friend and I are currently taking the V-ball 202 skills and drills clinic and it's awesome. Our instructor Ross totally rocks. Our skills have improved in just a few short weeks...I still need to nail down that 3 step hitting...but I'm sure I'll get there by the end of the program. You get individualized attention in class and the 1 hour 15 minutes fly by. And you get an awesome work out! I also played through the Players Sports v-ball league last summer. I signed up for 6vs6 soccer (Kilbourn Park) through Player Sports with my friends and we were put on an Indy team because we didn't have a FULL team. and They did a great job! I love my team. We got tshirts, bar sponsors were easy to find, the field is great (just a little far) but no complaints, online brackets, refs are great, online stuff was user-friendly, well-organized, and great great organization. Love Players Sports! I've played both co-ed softball and co-ed flag football with these guys and had a great experience. The refs (especially my personal fave Robby) are professional, friendly and consistent. The different divisions allow teams to find the right balance of competition and recreation for their needs. I have seen injuries arise a few times and they have been taken seriously and handled professionally. The website is well organized and straightforward. If you're interested in playing a recreational team sport in Chicago, definitely pick Players Sports and avoid Chicago Sport & Social Club. read more

I will never sign up for a Players sport again after our experience with their beach volleyball league this year. We have always played with CSSC in the past and decided to give Players a shot this year. The entry fee was higher than what we paid with CSSC, but we hoped that would mean superior equipment and organization. We were wrong. The league is very poorly run with little to no communication. The schedule for the league wasn't posted until last minute, which led to a lot of confusion. There was no signage for the courts the first week, so we had a very difficult time finding the correct court. Games were cancelled when CSSC games were still played on the same day. One week we had to a play a 9:30pm game on a court with little lighting, so it was impossible to see the ball. The employee running the league onsite is not very professional and does not help answer any questions. The equipment is horrible with half-deflated balls. When asked if they had a pump or a replacement ball, we were not given any help. Overall, we were consistently disappointed with the league and our whole team agrees that we will be signing up with CSSC for beach volleyball next year. Until the company has better management, comunication and equipment, I don't see how they can justify charging the prices that they do. read more

Players Sports Group, for the most part, is professionally and smoothly run. You will definitely pay more to be in a league through PSG, but it does get you some added benefits. The "free" matching t-shirts for your whole team are nice. The fields and locations where you play are convenient and well-maintained- we played flag football at the beautiful, clean, well-lit turf field by North Ave beach. The games start on time and are rarely, if ever, cancelled at the last minute. There is a frequently updated weather hotline and website. The one issue I have with PSG is the referees. One of the major reasons people play in this league is to have trained, competent referees instead of arguing about fouls amongst themselves. Although some of our refs were completely fine, others were so bad that some of my teammates ended up writing letters of complaint to PSG to ask for a partial refund. Some of the refs just do not have a good grasp of the rules, timekeeping, how to keep themselves in positions to see the game action, and work as a team (2 refs per game in football, at least). This is a major issue for a league that would otherwise probably have earned five stars from me. read more

If you're looking to play softball in their league or any of the social leagues for that matter, don't bother.......their league fees are $400-500 higher than the suburban leagues, do yourself a favor a do the drive to the suburbs to play. These guys would stick your team in a dark alley to play and still charge you $1200, oh wait, they already do,,,,it's called Union Park, the lighting there is unsafe and they make you hit a white flight restricted ball which after the first inning you can't see because the white turns a dirty brown....USE AN OPTIC YELLOW BALL YOU F*** TARDS! If you like winning a craptacular T-shirt for 1st place instead of real prize winnings,,,,go ahead and sign up. Word through the grapevine is there's going to be some new leagues in the city next year that some softballers that actually know the sport are running. The word is they are sending the championship team to Vegas to play in a tournament, airfare/hotel paid for. Now those are real winnings! I've been involved with Players Sports Group for roughly 7 years and yes they may not be perfect (who is) BUT this is definitely the go to place if your looking to get involved in some type of RECREATIONAL sports activity....or looking to party! I really emphasize on "recreational" because that's exactly what this is place is all about....RECREATIONAL! Don't get me wrong, they competition is GREAT. You have your newbies to the sport to guys who just fell short of going pro! But @ the end of the day I come here to have fun and meet some cool people....and I always do! Some times I feel the people that get involved think this is AAU or some type of Semi-Pro sports league! Its actually quite funny when you do come across those players! They want the umps to be perfect and the system to be flawless. If that's your attitude then maybe PSG is not for you. I mean other than winning a championship tshirt and bragging rights nothing else is @ stake. This is not a money league. So that's def something to think about before signing up. Win lots of friends and good times-YES! Win lots of money, Diamond encrusted ring and a lucrative contract-NO! I've only played...play softball/basketball, so I can only attest to those leagues. Scott is fricking awesome and every time I've had an issue he has always been understanding and helped out any way he could. Here's why PSG doesn't get 5 stars; 1. They don't have a loyalty program- For someone who has consistently put together a team year after year with PSG.... should receive sometime of discount or perk if you will. Whats the incentive for continuing to come back? I think by doing this, it would really separate them for the other other sports organizations in the city. 2. The leagues are pricey- So maybe to offside the cost, instead of winning just a championship tshirt...offer cash/happy hour or damn man a few kegs of beer?! Just to be fair, in defense to the cost; PSG does host there games on some of the nicest fields/facilities that Chicago has to offer. Co-ed Kickball. The guy who refs at Churchill (summer 2011) is a complete ass. Conversely, the guy who refs at Burr School is very cool and polite. Take from that what you will, but how hard is it to find people who can politely answer questions about calls and not give this, 'Im the ref and you dont know what the f*** you're talking about" response? I wouldnt say he ruined our experience, but our team always hated playing under his rule because he usually found a way to put a damper on an otherwise good time. The league is at least professional enough though, and its definitely more about having a good time than being competitive. Such is the nature of kickball though. I've played indoor and outdoor soccer through Players for almost five years, and it's been great. I've also organized teams through Chicago Sport & Social, but at any given time my team is usually playing through Players, which is usually a little cheaper than CSSC. Leagues are very reliable, there's only been one or two occasions that there weren't enough teams to fill the league. I was notified in advance and given the option of a full refund or choosing another league for my team. I've had a super easy time communicating with staff over the years, and they're always friendly and helpful. Online system is easy to manage and typically the entire schedule is posted before the first game. And the refs, though not professionals, do a fine job - this isn't the big leagues, guys, just play through the occasional missed call. read more

Umpire on one field for the holiday mens 12in tournament that took place on 11/22/20 was brutal. He was practically on the other team, he never called illegal height for the other team but was calling it consistently for our pitcher. It was so clear he did not want us to win. Umpire was having full on conversations with the opposing teams catcher while we were batting, so unprofessional. I will be highly disappointed if i see the same umpire for the upcoming tournament taking place on12/5/20. At the end of the game when we lost to get into the championship my team mate said to the ump you were practically on their team and he lost his mind and started screaming at our team. The softball league smashed a foul ball into my rear windshield and their behavior was despicable!!!!!!!!! Completely ruined - glass all over the inside of my car and belongings. I (single woman) and young child (in the back seat!!!!) were in the car. They laughed when I asked if they were going to pay for it and they didn't even apologize!! I've participated in four different leagues across Chicago, and this is certainly the best run out of all of them. I've played kickball, dodgeball, bowling, and both in and outdoor volleyball. The prices are on par with most of the other leagues, if not cheaper. I've never had any issues with games randomly getting canceled, and they've done a good job making sure we can play even if it is misting or lightly raining so as to not mess up the schedule. The schedules are posted with reasonable notice. I'm impressed with the organization considering how big this league is. What is most impressive, though, is the customer service. I've been waitlisted a couple times for teams, and have been contacted promptly if a spot opens up. I've never waited more than 24 hours for a phone or e-mail response, usually from Dave, the go-to. Most recently, I was signed up for a kickball team and had a bunch of players back out on me last second. Obviously, as a captain, that would suck to foot the bill. Players managed to extremely quickly switch my deposit over to a beach volleyball team that was a bit cheaper. Because we missed the first two weeks, they ensured our next two weeks were double headers so that we still got all our games in. This may have been fairly messy on their end to schedule, but they made it happen quickly and efficiently! I've also attended some of their social events (st practice day bar crawl, and the great american bags tournament to name a couple), which were fun and friendly events...fairly cheap too. read more

If you want to over pay for random cancellations, terrible umping (again this isn't all of them but the bad out number the good), questionable field conditions, then this is a place to throw your money away. I have played several different sports through players and the biggest problem i have with them is when you sign up in a beginners league. they do not regulate it and what happens is there are just a bunch of semi-pros beating up and a bunch novices (me being a novice). The guys who are really good seem to get off on this, joining the easiest leagues and them winning in basketball or soccer bu 25 points or goals. I would think it is a waste of time for everyone. Poorly managed. I was nervous signing up for the Individual Outdoor Soccer leagues after reading reviews about the actual games/refs. But, I couldn't even get that far. I signed up for a league online, paid the ($95, yikes that should pay for a well run program, right?) and waited. Was told when to expect confirmation about the team I'd be placed on. That date came and passed and I called in to find out what was going on. Expressed my disappointment that there had never been a single followup email (..other than an automated receipt after purchase). Was told that the league start date was pushed back a week. WTF, you're gonna push the date back and not make any attempt to communicate that out? Fine, I was told to wait another week and that I would get an email. Another week, no email. Call in again, and leave my email and phone number and am guaranteed that someone will message me the information about the status of the team and when play will start. That email never came, no phone call either and play is supposed to start tomorrow. I take it that I don't have a team. Or any info on what my $95 actually paid for or how to get it back. Not a single Fing email even. That's just beyond possible incompetence and onto laziness and rudeness. I can't imagine what the actual games would have been like. read more

Poor experience at best. A friend of mine convinced me to play on his coed soccer team this fall. What a mess. Cancellations with last second notice, referees who would sometimes be talking on their cell phone and be too busy to get the game or next half started and then they would dock us playing time for their tardiness. Plus, the managers of the league might want to buy their referees a whistle that works since the people we had would rarely make calls and looked the other way when there were dangerous plays. Ugly tee shirts they handed out for playing - nice to get a shirt though - some other leagues seem to have difficulty performing that task - but ugly is almost worse than no tee-shirt! Networking can be done at any sports league and CSSC throws more and better parties. I want a well run sports league when I play sports and that was not my experience this past season. read more

This sucked. We signed up for the most unskilled level of beach volleyball and were put on a team with people who were really competitive and really good players. These were also mean people who made rude comments, kept both of us out of the play and definitely made it clear that we weren't good enough. It was BEGINNERS volleyball. TOtally not competitive, for fun Volleyball. We asked to be moved to a different group and players sports did nothing. SO I wasted $200 on some jerks who couldn't play nice because Players wasn't willing to help out. Disappointing and lame experience. read more

PSSG is the best way to play sports and be social in Chicago. They offer the BEST and most FUN leagues in the city. They offer leagues and tournaments at all the prime locations. I have played competitive volleyball at Windy City in Logan Square and the leagues includes experienced referees who keep the game fun and safe. I am also a recreational softball player who play in multiple leagues every season. PSSG offers a wide range of recreational and competitive sports. I look forward to my games every night to catch up with some friends and play the sports I love! Aside from sports, I recently attended their Whiskey Wine and Swine event at Old Crow Smoke house. The umpire at Holstein Park is a jerk and does not call fair plays. When a girl pitches fast...doesn't call a thing...a guy pitches same speed...he's all over it. He has had a bad attitude the entire season and acts like he'd rather be anywhere else. Makes me want to be anywhere else. Never playing that location ever again. read more

My teams only play with Players Sports Group because they easily run the best leagues in the city. Their leagues have good competition and are always well organized. We used to play with Chicago Social and Sportsmonster but my teams were totally frustrated at the lack the quality and organization they offered. The one time we had an issue with a Players Sports Group umpire I called their office to express concern. They rectified it by replacing the umpire with a great new ump (Steve was the best!) by our next week's game. The Players Sports office totally listened and responded to our issues. I just finished a men's rec basketball league and found the overall experience disappointing. The first couple weeks of the league were awful. The first week, the score keeper was over an hour late, pushing all of the games back. The second week, the gym was full of crap left behind by a Thanksgiving dinner hold there the night before, as well as a basketball hoop could not be lowered because no one knew where the tool was. By the time the tool was found, the next game was supposed to start and our game was postponed. This led to the next few weeks being full of double headers. I joined as an indy, and since our team was only assigned 5 players, it was almost a given we had to hunt for subs. The gym itself had a very slippery floor, several dead spots and was not well maintained. (St. Greggory's in Andersonville) After being in leagues by Cities and Sports, S3 and now Players, I can honestly say this was my least favorite experience. Issues with my season aside, Players is not really geared towards indies or even creating a real social environment. It is on your team to find a bar to sponsor you, and without an assigned sponsor bar, my team just was not that social. (I understand we all could have been more proactive in being social, but I think we were all gun shy by the poor start to the season) If you are looking for a group that focuses more on social and plans seasons around that, go with S3. Cities and Sports was fun too, but not as heavy on the social stuff. Unless you get a groupon or are joining with a fully formed team, I advise passing on Players. read more

This group has its pros and cons. I got a living social deal so was able to join a beginner soccer league for $49. You cannot beat the price. League has a website you can follow, so that is nice. However, some of the people in my league played soccer in college and are making goals from mid field. The field is at an elementary school and rrrrreeallly small, feels like you're constantly running into people. Nets have holes in them and we are constantly chasing balls everywhere. Biggest con of all, the refs. We have had a different ref for everygame. Only one actually seemed to know what was going on. Rules change weekly. Last week we had a guy who didn't even blow the whistle for out of bounds, tell us of goals counted or know the score. He wasn't even keeping time! Couldn't care less. This is supposed to be a beginners league, so a ref who is actually watching the game would be beneficial. read more

The volleyball 101 class did not meet the course description. It was not for beginners or those new to the sport, or those who had never played but wanted to learn. The so called "instructor" told people what to do, never coached them or taught any kind of technique, and then was busy texting on his phone. He wanted to be paid for doing as little as possible. I could have gotten as much from watching You Tube videos, and practicing alone in my own gym. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THESE classes. I am demanding a refund, as I will NOT BE GOING BACK! read more
