This is my Second time at plaza Azteca and it was just as amazing experience as the first ! For a Saturday evening it was not very busy . We got seated immediately ( we chose the bar area for a more lively atmosphere) the bar area has multiple TVs to watch sports . Our waitress was fabulous , she came by and checked on us every once in a while to make sure we had everything we needed . We started with a regular mango margarita which was AMAZING , definitely one of my favourites of all time . The flavour was sweet but not to overpowering and just the right amount of tequila ! I also tried the champagne margarita because I was curious how it would taste ! And I'm SO GLAD I GOT IT because it was AMAZING ! The margarita came with a mini procceco bottle on top ! Definitely instagram worthy! And the flavour was amazing , the size was large .. I had a hard time finishing it all ! We snacked on some chips and salsa while we waited for our entrees. The salsa was good and housemade chips were fresh, warm and crispy . We enjoyed it very much and had to ask for another round of salsa ! For our entrees we split the molcajeta Azteca between two people ! This truly was a feast of steak , chicken and shrimp mixed with peppers and onions! Served along with mexican rice, beans , and fresh tortillas! The food was amazing ! And definitely can feed 4 people easily! We had plenty of leftovers after eating to our hearts content! Woah, talk about a 5 all day on the play! Plaza Azteca in Newington, CT was able to make some changes that have earned them this 5 star rating and I would like to start with my Waiter, Ernesto! This Man was both polite and welcoming as if I were part of his own Family. He was prompt with taking my order and made sure to check on me throughout my stay, ensuring my food was good and keeping my drink refilled with a smile. He handed me some fresh chips and salsa! The flavor was nothing short of phenomenal and that salsa was a light and savory bite of delight. Tomatoes cut down in a very fine way, cilantro blazing the sauce; shuffling itself amongst the salt and pepper. It adhered well to my crispy tortilla chip and had the freshest of POPS to the bite. Eye opening if nothing else. Up next, I had to attack the sizzling Queso Dip plate. A trunk full of shrimp, sliced chicken, steak that held a slight fattiness about itself for additional flavor and everything was blanketed in so much melted cheese that it became its own jungle gym of joy. Each forkful was meant to play an accord upon my palette in a way that would enhance happiness in a full suit. This deck of flavor could only be shuffled by the very best of foodies and let me tell you, I only looked forward to my very next bite, it was just that good! The beans and rice, side plate that accompanied my birria tacos was a hearty bite. The rice was soft and the black beans packed a strong flavor of ethnic flare to really drive something so simple, right on home. Even the birria tacos were crazy with their own respected flavor. The onion, the beef and of course the crisp on the taco was the epitome of this dish but let us not disrespect the broth to dip it all in. To me, it was more like a thinner gravy, which when I sank my teeth into this taco, I think a single tear fell down my cheek and onto my plate. My partner is Vegan so the dedicated vegetarian/Vegan section of the menu was what drew us here! Tl;dr This restaurant will not provide you with a truly authentic Mexican experience; however, their food is abundant and flavorful! Our server was very friendly, polite, and timely!! We both enjoyed some jumbo margaritas, table side spicy guacamole, and the nachos supreme! The nachos were the highlight of the meal for me! Definitely try these nachos; each nacho was individually crafted for a perfect experience in every bite! The guacamole was excellent but could have been spicier considering we ordered the spiciest option. My partner ordered the vegan tacos which were "delicious and filling!" My Burrito Mex was decent. I really struggled how to rate this Mexican restaurant. I think it is better than how others reviewed it, but I can see how it has the potential to fall short. If you don't have time to read a whole review - my takeaway is that the food is good for a chain Mexican restaurant, but there is much better out there. I've had amazing Mexican (see my review of Erick's) and this was ok competitively. In fact - Puerta Vallarte just up the road should be your go to Mexican restaurant. Ok so what worked here? The vegan bowl was actually very good. It is hard to make a vegan dish that makes you say, hm I'll order that again. But this dish had such great combination of flavors I would order it again. My son raved about their beef tacos. But he had only been exposed to Taco Bell, so his standards aren't that high. The churros. Ok these were the absolute highlight of our meal. We might go back just for the churros. Perfectly crispy and sugary on outside and chewy on inside.. with lovely honey drizzle. I'm salivating just thinking about them. I would have given the place a 4th star just for these churros... And now for what didn't work: you get free chips and salsa when you sit down. This should be a plus, but the salsa was super watery and as someone else mentioned, too tomato sauce like. It needed something that I couldn't put my finger on. The chips needed salt. My son actually salted them as they were bland. The plating wasn't great - I usually don't pay too much attention to it, but my son's build your own dish looked bland. He didn't finish his food .. he didn't like the enchilada. The only other thing I would comment on is that the staff seemed off... it is difficult to describe it but they almost seemed annoyed. This used to be our go to Mexican place. We have moved but were back in the area today so decided to stop in, sadly, we feel they have gone downhill. The service was great. So, The two stars are because of the food. We got there shortly after they opened. The initial basket of chips was stale. We asked our server for a new basket and she said the guys were making a fresh batch. The new batch was warm but still just tasted off. I usually get the seafood enchiladas but didn't want to risk it after starting with stale food. My husband's go to is always fajitas. We got the fajitas for 2. The shrimp (only 4 of them) were ok. The steak and chicken were such thin strips of meat that all I could taste was the grill. The portion was huge but the taste was lacking. We left disappointed. read more

Haven't been to Plaza Azteca in a while and we wanted Mexican so we decided to go. Not happy to say the least. We were seated immediately on a Saturday evening at 6pm (Myself, my husband and our two children). We ordered our drinks first- drinks were good. Patron margarita was actually delicious. It was not busy at all- just a few tables. Here's the issue: I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that our food came out six minutes after we ordered. I had a chicken Burrito, my husband had the birria tacos and the kids had cheese quesadillas and rice. The cheese in kids quesadillas were cold and not even melted, my burrito filling was lukewarm!!! They had just quickly assembled with ingredients that had clearly just been sitting around. My husbands birria was piping hot. We didn't even get a chance to chat or enjoy our drinks before the food came out and the waitress checked on us ONCE. I don't understand what the rush was with the food especially because it was not even busy! Needless to say, we will not be back. read more

I went to Plaza Azteca last night with a friend. He was hungry and I really wasn't. This is not the place to go if you're not hungry. The interior has a really fun look, with candles lined up across the walls, and other interesting details. This evening was pretty busy. The menu is full of large portions and comfort foods. It's really hard to find something somewhat light and moderately sized. We got seated very quickly. The waitress quickly brought out chips and salsa. This is certainly not authentic Mexican food. It's not a bad idea to share a meal here, if you're moderately hungry. I decided to go with guacamole. You have a choice of mild or spicy. I decided with spicy. This was so delicious. And it arrived in a beautiful dish that I'm not sure if it has some type of special name. This guacamole was very limey and very fresh. I really enjoyed. I had more then half to take home. I also enjoyed a Moscow mule, not the best I've ever had, it was a bit strong. But regardless pretty good. My friend enjoyed his chicken dish. This guacamole was tasty, and very nicely presented, but the menu is overwhelming and the portions are huge. I can't say I'm running to dine here again soon, just because I'm overwhelmed by the portions. This is a good choice for comfort food once in a while and delicious guacamole. read more

This Mexican joint was at its prime when it first opened up several years ago, but it's starting to get good again. I love Tex-Mex, but I'm trying to cut back on dairy foods, and so I was glad Plaza Azteca offered some vegan/vegetarian options last I visited here with my brother. I asked the server if they could sub the "gourmet vegan cheese" they advertised on the menu for one item for the real cheese on the veggie enchiladas, and they made that happen, no problem. They ought to advertise the option of having that vegan cheese for other items too if desired because it was good stuff! The rest of the enchiladas didn't quite have as much taste to it, though, but it was fine. Our server, meanwhile, was warm, welcoming, and attentive. Good experience overall. read more

Brought my brother here for his birthday. It was good alternative option to the standard American cuisine and he loves himself some Fajitas anyways. I've been here before (maybe 5 years or more ago) but the place hasn't change (in a good way). The food was still good and the staff was still on their game. You get chips and fresh salsa to start your experience which is now an expectation at a Mexican style restaurant. For the rest of the food, we decided to get an appetizer and family size Fajita dish to feed us both. My brother got some mixed drink to take the edge off of having to turn 29 (oh boy). The food is a little bit pricey so keep that in mind. If you bring a family of 4, you are looking to spend high $$ or even $$$ easily and that's without any drinks, just appetizers/entrees. However the food and atmosphere is good enough to justify most of that cost. The only complaint that I have with Plaza Azteca is they don't give you enough flour tortillas for the amount of Fajitas condiments they give you. My brother and I had to bring home leftovers because we didn't have anymore tortillas to make fajitas with. It's not totally a curse as we could both use a hard stop point (binge eating when you drink happens) but they should definitely given us 2 or 3 more tortillas (especially since that's one of the cheapest parts of the meal) instead of mentioning on the menu that you can pay extra for them. I will come here again as the food is good but I will be keen to not get the family sized Fajitas unless I plan on bringing half of it home in a doggy bag for tomorrow's left overs. read more

I do not recommend this restaurant. Me and my girlfriend were " drugged" during our lunch. We ordered the table side guacamole- which was not made by the table, two club sodas and individual meals. About halfway through the meal we both started to feel "funny" and disoriented. We ended up leaving and going to the ED where we were informed it may have been laced with a synthetic form of THC. We also filed a report with newington PD. I am glad it was us and not someone with a heart condition or worse. I do not recommend dining here. read more

I was excited to try this place based on my sister's rave review, so we ordered dinner last week when I was in town for 3 of us. Perhaps my expectations were super high based on her feedback, but I wasn't impressed. I ordered enchiladas which came with rice and beans. My sister ordered the chicken fajitas and niece ordered an app (I can't recall the name which was chicken with melted cheese on it). It came with chips and salsa as well. The chips were crisp, but everything was under seasoned. The rice and beans were super bland and the fajitas also had no real flavor either. Perhaps the secret to eating here is what you're ordering. We have been here a number of times and have always had a good experience. But I will add the caveat that we always order the same exact thing. I always start with one of the jumbo mango margaritas. They are so good!! They're strong too, you're definitely feeling it after just one drink. They give you free chips and salsa, which are very good. They'll give you more if you want it, but we try not to fill up on that before the meal. But we also never order appetizers as the chips and salsa are enough. I always order the baja fish tacos and they're great. It's served with rice or black beans. I always get the rice. It's different than the rice that comes with the other meals. It's more of a white rice with corn and seasonings mixed in. I love it. The portion size is just enough. Let's be realistic, no one wants reheated leftover fried fish tacos. So it's better to get an appropriate portion that you can eat while at the restaurant. I can't always finish all of it, but do usually eat the fish out of the tacos. My husband always orders fajitas. It's pretty standard and hard to mess up. He always has leftovers to bring home. I can't speak to the rest of the menu, because we really do order the same thing every time.
