I am a whiskey gal, and this local spot has a fantastic selection of whiskey. If there is a new whiskey (or new to me), I can ask Freddy about it. They can usually get me any bottle I am looking to try. For non-whisky drinkers, they got you covered, with a great selection of domestic and imported spirits. If you're looking for something to bring to a party or a gift and need some help, these guys will so point you in the right direction. I've been trying as much as I can during the pandemic to buy beer directly from the smaller breweries to show them some support. They're the ones getting hurt the hardest while liquor stores are surging with most people choosing to drink at home rather than out in the wild. With that being said, when we've had a taste for some specific hard seltzers, wine, hard to find beer, or other beverage we've come here. This mom and pop is awesome. Even with a Bevmo nearby they're by far the better choice. Selection, customer service, and supporting the little guys. That's why you come to Plaza. read more

In reading other Yelpers' reviews of Plaza WIne and Spirits, I'm surprised that one fact has been neglected - despite a change in location (they originally were located in the Mira Mesa Mall up 'til the late-90s), this is one of the oldest liquor stores in the Mecca. Yet, the brothers that run the place are still friendly and have a very well stocked and affordably priced selection that puts BevMo next door to shame. Normally, I come in here to get a lotto ticket or two, but the last time I was here, I noticed their sake and plum wine selection was more enticing than at their competitors next door (and come to think of it, many of the Asian supermarkets as well). I had a decent experience the first couple of times I came here during the daytime this year; however, last night I decided to visit this establishment at nighttime, and my experience was a lot less pleasant. I arrived at the store around a couple of hours before closing time (Maps app says they're open until midnight). There were a group of guys hanging out outside of the store, and when I walked inside, there was no attendant behind the counter. It turns out, the attendant was actually outside with that group of people hanging out with them. He came back inside and got behind the counter and at first seemed helpful; he asked me if he could help me with anything and I told him I was browsing their selections. After about 15 minutes give or take, the clerk said he wanted to go on his break. I asked him how long his break was going to be, as I still wanted to browse their selection of beers. He didn't say how long his break would be. I then felt rushed. I told him I didn't mean to hold up his break, and then I told him I would just leave since "I can't make up my mind." He said, "Thanks." I think it was rude that this gentleman seemed more interested in just hanging out with the crowd of people outside of the store than giving me a bit more time to make a purchase, as they do have a diverse selection of craft beers to choose from. I got back inside of my car, and it looked like he went back outside to hang out with the people hanging out outside of the store again. Because of this experience, I will happily take my business elsewhere, as the other two establishments I like to go to have much better customer service. read more

This has to be the best and friendliest liquor store I've ever been to. I worked in the same shopping plaza as these guys and relied on them for everything! The store has everything you can imagine, liquor or otherwise, opens early and stays open late. This is the best neighborhood convenience store, family owned, extremely well stocked and maintained, and when you are a customer there, you are never taken for granted or forgotten. This is a great craft beer/liquor store in Mira Mesa/Sorrento Valley. Every January/February Bells Brewery releases their seasonal Hop Slam and I can always find it here. They also carry Pliny the Elder when it's out and other Russian River beers. I shop here very often. I shop there frequently, Freddy and all the staff are super nice and incredibly helpful. He even added a wine to his fridge that my wife likes. read more

These guys got a new humidor closet for displaying cigars about 2 months ago and our hero just noticed it on his last visit to Plaza. He talked to one of the Persian guys that runs the store about his favorites and looked over their small selection available that provided many different brands to complement a stiff drink. The are competing hard with Bevmo, which is literally right next door, so they make up for the difference in size with superior customer service. These guys will put in a special order for anything you want if you can't find a bottle on their shelves: scotch, beers, wines... anything! PROS: - Much better customer service than Bevmo. - Will custom order you liquor if you can't find it on display. I can't say enough about this place. I would go to bevmo, which is next door but one day I was like let me check this out. They have buy a bottle of wine and get one for a penny. I was like WHAT!!! Since then I don't go to bed I only go to Plaza wine and spirits. The staff... Freddy, Danny, Fadi they are the best. They will always take care of you and it's just the best. They also have an AMAZING selection of alcohol depending on what you're looking for. It's like family!!! I stopped in after hearing about the selection from a few people at my job, and I was looking for something different/unique/special/hard to get for a holiday gift. At first I was skeptical, but as the old adage goes "don't judge a book by its cover." I walked in and was amazed by the selection. Seriously, I don't know how they do it, but they've got a lot of hard to find beer (and wine) for extremely reasonable prices (well, reasonable for the particular beer/wine, it's still crazy to me when a beer is $25, but that's not Plaza's fault!) This place is awesome. Best in class for SD, maybe two or three other shops can stay on par with these guys. I tell them I want something, then they order 4 cases of it and call me. Dixie Blackened Voodoo?? yep, they have it now. Cheaper than any other place...oh wait, you can't get it any other place. Onyx cigars...hard to find, and worth the money. ~$9 or so, for a great smoke, most cigar places don't carry this thing, and its a wonderful smoke. They have an incredible beer selection, but the manager (nephew of the owner) is always there, and can get anything you want if they don't carry it. They want your business, and they have earned mine, many times over. They are next to a Fresh and Easy, and a BevMo, and still manage to rock it. Love these guys, they are definitely MY LIQUOR STORE OF CHOICE. By the way BevMo sucks for only being open until 9pm...who drinks before 9pm with any real passion..? Worth the drive. read more

Gotta give this place some love. I do not know who negotiated Plaza's commercial lease, but they should be dragged out into the parking lot right in front of the Bevmo next door and get some sense beaten into them. I hate seeing independent businesses get sandwiched right next door to a competing big box store. Plaza is smart though. They fill in the blanks at Bevmo. Plaza has an incredible selection of craft beers and I even found a bottle of bourbon that I have only ever seen in Kentucky. The prices are also really, really competitive. Yes, the counter guys are friendly and know most of the customers by name. And they do keep better hours than BevMo and will get you whatever alcohol your liver desires. In fact, I'd rather go here than BevMo because I know the owners spend their money locally. But I just can't give them that 5-star rating just yet. I require 24-hour status in order to grant that elusive 5th star. I'm sure there are city, county, and state laws that prohibit them from selling alcohol non-stop, for eternity. But that's what I require. So until then, this will continue to be the best liquor store in Mira Mesa, but not the US. There are some very amazing liquor stores in Vegas... read more

The first time I came in here, I was thinking of just getting a couple of beers. I walked over $150 poorer, but much, much richer in spirit. As another reviewer pointed out, the fact they have randomly awesome hard-to-find beer like Dixie Blackened Voodoo is good enough. That they sell it at not-marked-up prices is simply amazing. Lots of interesting beers of all kinds including tons of locals- they had the most from Alpine that I've seen around town and a good number from Iron Fist (though their Lost Abbey selection was a bit sparse at the time). They may not have every beer, but they certainly have more variety than shops 10x their size. As everyone else has mentioned, the owners are simply awesome people who clearly love good beer (and other kinds of alcohol) and go the extra mile for customers. I came in a week after my first visit, mentioned I had been there the week before, then got an impromptu tour of all the new beers that had arrived since then (quite a lot!). They're apparently expanding to another whole aisle and are happy to take requests if there's a certain beer they don't have that you'd like to see. I've found my go-to liquor store in SD and will be making many, many return visits. read more

I know you want to head into that brand new shiny BevMo and fill up a basket full of liquor and beer but hear me out first. See that place over there? Yes, it's a liquor store as well. You should go there instead. No really, in many ways Plaza Wine & Spirits is a better choice. How? *steps up on a soapbox* Well, I'll tell you. For one, when you shop there, you're supporting an independently run establishment and putting money directly into the local economy. Additionally you're ensuring the fact that you have different choices on where you spend your money. I know Plaza carries products BevMo carries as well as things they don't. If you don't support smaller businesses, they end up closing down and you have fewer options to choose from. Finally, you're helping to maintain the community character in the area. Granted, Mira Mesa's community character is next to nil, but still, it would be even blander if a place like this went under. *gets down from the previously mentioned soapbox* Besides, Plaza is often times cheaper than Big Red next door. Also, talk to the proprietors, they'll cut you deals on large orders! I once ordered a case of champagne through them despite the fact they don't carry the brand I wanted. Lastly, they're open until 10:00 while BevMo closes at 9:00. Does this review mean I'll never shop at BevMo? Absolutely not. Browsing their scotch selection makes me go from six to twelve every time. I'm just saying, given a choice I'm going to visit Plaza first. read more

Freddy & Fadi are excellent! I was calling around looking for a specific Craft Brew that I was interested in trying. I contacted Plaza and was told they get it infrequently and that it sells fast, "try again tomorrow." I called back, it was in stock so I came in right after work. Unfortunatly, I wasn't fast enough it was sold out when I got there. The guys tried to call around to find me one or two for me being as I had psyched myself up for it and had expectations based on my phone call earlier in the day. Alas, to no avail. But, they made some recommendations, took my name and number, and called me the next time it came in, so I could come in and get it. Good looking out! They have a wide and varied selection of beers, friendly and their customer service is above the norm. I've been coming here for years. The brothers (really the whole family) that run this business know all about customer service, and how to take care of and how to properly treat the community. They go the extra mile to get to know you, and learn what your likes and dislikes are. They always greet you with a smile, and certainly appreciate your returning business. They have an excellent selection of the best and most popular beer, wine and alcohol. Even the hard to find stuff that you wouldn't think is available here in San Diego, in California, and sometimes even in the Country. I remember coming back from a trip to Europe, and I was looking for a particular brand of wine. I asked the guys if they had it, and sure enough it was right on the shelf. Recently my sister got married, and I asked the guys if they would like to cater all the beverages. Not only did they oblige with a wonderful selection...they were also VERY FAIR on their price. Never have I been compelled to "like" a liquor store until I met Freddie. His infectious smile and friendly conversation makes a visit to the liquor store a social experience. He makes great recommendations without me asking. He knows what I like and often suggests something better and less expensive. And when I was told by Mercedes that I needed a $1,900 intake manifold, Freddie found a way to do it for $1,000. Freddie is a very resourceful guy. Usually when I am there, somebody is standing around not buying liquor. They are just chatting with Freddie. It's not just Freddie.. his brother Fadi, his dad, and the others are just as friendly. If you're looking to try something new, here you will find Stone's limited releases and a huge Belgian selection of Trippel, Quadrupel, and Strong Ales. Review from a beer snob Pro's +Decent selection of microbrews, both locally and from around the world. +Not the friendliest guys, but they will show you what is new (I always ask). I never see them smile. +Able to make "your own six pack" (i.e. buy a bunch of 12oz to try) Con's -Sure, there is no price markup on the more common beers (they have to be competitive with BevMo next door), but their uncommon stuff (Alpine, Russian River) are $1-3 more than other established beer stores. Because of this, I do not buy beers like this from them. -They carry a bunch of IPAs and many of them are NOT refrigerated. In fact I fear some might be in direct view of the sun. As an IPA fan, they really gotta change this. Notes These guys know a bit about beer, but they are far from beer experts. They mispronounce breweries and talk of getting beers in that I know are brewery release only. However, they are businessmen and want to make money - so they do ask you about what beers they should carry. All in all, a decent beer store; great for Mira Mesa. read more

I have to say, I can see why these guys are able to keep their small specialty liquor store in business when they share a wall with a huge corporate competitor. Super polite and friendly employees and a GREAT selection at very competitive prices! I had gone next door on a hunt for a less common schnapps and it was suggested I check at Plaza Wine & Spirits... Freddie was knowledgeable and helpful, and had the bottle I've been looking for everywhere for weeks transferred in from their other location and I was able to pick it up within 48 hours. This isn't in my local neighborhood, but I have definitely bookmarked it so I can stock up my bar here. Awesome little shop! read more

This is my favorite whiskey shop. They always have what I'm looking for, whether it's Amrut Indian Peated Whiskey, or a Glengoyne 17 year, or a small-batch bourbon, they never let me down. Others have said it first and better, but I'm going to add another five-star review because this business deserves it. I've been working in the Mira Mesa area for many years and have been going to this store for about the same amount of time. However, I didn't drink, so it was just to get candy and scratchers. A few months ago I started drinking (lightly). Just today, I went into Plaza for the first time as a drinker. WOW. Because I just started, I'm still figuring out what I like. I'm much more of a beer guy than anything else right now, and their beer selection is INCREDIBLE. What really gets me is their huge selection of single bottles and cans. For an experimenter like me, that's a godsend. (I hate having to buy a six-pack of something I'm not sure I'll like, and then not liking it.) I went in hoping to find my current favorite, Warsteiner. While they didn't have it, they knew of it and said "come back tomorrow, we'll have it for you!" Now that's service! This is my new go-to store for beer from here on out. Thanks, Plaza! read more

Seeing how I am taking time today to "Yelp" around to all my friends on FB and followers here, I thought I would also take a moment to put a shout out to "My Boyz" over at Plaza. Again, this is a business right across the street from my home that I started visiting years ago. Very occasional at first but now is almost a daily trek for multiple reasons. The crazy thing about plaza is that they sit right next door to BevMo...which I found odd that they could even exist there without being run outta the hood with the big chain store beside them. Well they haven't! And for good reason! Starting with the basics....selection is huge, prices are good to great, but as with any smaller shop, what separates them is the service. Freddy, hi s dad, and the guys absolutely are the best!!! Friendly, always there to help, will find what you want if they don't have it, and just good people. They take time to get to know their customers and make you their friends....that takes the term customer service to a whole different level in a time when we seem like nothing more then cattle being herded in many of the big chains regardless of the business type. Regardless whether you need ice to fix your broken body, something to cool off and kick back after a hard day at work or play on the weekend....the guys rock and are here for you.
