My first few visits were non-memorable except for a longish wait. The last time I went there was so disheartening that I cannot get up the energy to try it again. Went with my granddaughter, we were seated right away but waited awhile for even water. We ordered shrimp cocktail which I thought would be a fun treat but the shrimp was soft & mealy and room temp not cold. We waited a long time for this even though we ordered both app and dinner at the same time. When dinner finally came (and beverages at same time) the wait person informed us that she had a phone-in order to get ready and that is why our food was delayed. I would think the people who take the trouble to come there should get some priority over the call-ins. Won't be back. Was with a party of 5. Appetizer of onion rings was very good. We then waited an hour for our main entrees. When the food came, it was obvious that it was thrown together. No care was given. We started to eat. Out of the 5 entrees, only 4 were good. DON'T ORDER THE MAC N CHEESE! Two of us ordered the Mac n cheese, one with chicken. It literally was noodles with some shredded cheese on top. No panko breading as described in the menu, no cheese sauce, just bits of unmelted cheddar cheese on plain noodles. When the waitress stopped by, I told her that our meals were very bland and she just walked away. The crisp that was served with the mac n cheese was good. I couldn't gag it down and we waited so long for our food that we decided to just deal with it. I did order the grilled chicken in my Mac and cheese and the only flavor was from the one burned and charred side of the chicken. No seasonings at all. And to add insult to injury, the chicken was barely warm. (And this added $6 to the already $9 Mac n cheese). To add to this, they had 2 young girls assisting the wait staff. They do not help, but take up space. The one walked around with silverware in her back pocket and then would give it to patrons to us. The other girl who was about 6-7, just walked around waving her towel that she used to haphazardly clean a bit of table here and there. We got the bill and couldn't wait to get out of here that we didn't realize that we were charged for a lemonade that we never even received. Never again. I would have better food with a box of Kraft Mac n Cheese with a lot less hassle and wait. On the up side, my brother in law did like his flat bread. The garlic chicken and salmon special also had no seasoning. Cannot recommend. Stay home and eat leftovers. It will be a better experience. read more

This is some of the best food I have ever tasted. I've tried a variety of things and nothing has been a disappointment. The restaurant itself is so charming. It has a wonderful outdoor area with a fire pit and the inside is beautiful. The service is outstanding. We checked out Plow for the first time about a week ago. This building has been plagued with restaurant after restaurant that doesn't seem to make it, and I've got to say - I think they could finally have a winner in there. That being said, they have some service kinks to work out. I'll break it down a little. I did not have one of their Bloody's, but my mother got a 'virgin Bloody' and their mix is absolutely amazing! I will be going back for one. :) One of the best spice blends I have ever tasted. We went at 6 on a Friday, and there was good crowd, but it wasn't full by any means. There were tables open. Our waitress was friendly enough, but she seemed to struggle service-wise especially because it wasn't too busy! It was hard to get our waters refilled, we were looking for her and she couldn't be found. The waiter at the next table kept apologizing and saying they were 'new', and my folks pointed out that this person was their waiter when they had eaten there over three weeks ago...so, yeah. Also, she forgot parts of our order, and offered nothing more than a kind of meek apology. My husband ordered the pork chop special (it was a very dry chop, I tried it) and was supposed to have a side of soup - we realized after we started eating that she had never brought his soup out, which should have been served with the bread. She also forgot a side order of brussel sprouts that my brother had put in, and when they did finally come out, they were kind of disgusting. We are not too picky, we love our fat - but they were covered in grease and he was kind of disappointed to the point where he barely touched them. On the plus side, the fish was pretty darn good and I got the vegetarian lasagne and really enjoyed it. Soooo...some food was pretty good/great, some was just okay or 'eh', and the service was a definite miss that night. I love this little town and want to see them succeed, so we will definitely be going back to give them another shot! read more

This was our third dinner at Plow and will be back. Obviously, the service issues have been corrected and our meals were impeccable. The smoked tenderloin filets were perfectly prepared and our guests raved about their seafood entrees. A great place to stop for a drink and a flatbread appetizer as well. Their wood fired oven has been re-bricked and is back in operation. It was fun to enjoy our first cocktail outside on the patio now that the weather has warmed. read more

While I would give the food 3 stars, the service wasn't even 1 star. I have never had a worse service experience at a restaurant in my life. Although we had a great time despite this establishment, I would avoid at all costs! We had a party of 9 people, which is apparently way beyond anything this staff can handle. First off, they forgot drinks for 3 out of the 9 orders. Those who actually got their drink order waited for over 25 minutes. There was no attention paid to drinks that were empty throughout the meal. Additional drink orders took at least 15 minutes to receive. We had to remind the waiter to bring my wife's soup... It came about the same time as the main course. Finally, the entrees started to arrive. They initially brought out 3 of the 8 entrees. Over 15 minutes passed before 7 of the 8 entrees were delivered to the table. According to our waiter, there was a "communication issue" with one of orders. In other words, they completely missed one of the orders. My wife's steak would arrive about 10 minutes later... 25 minutes after the first entree came to the table! She ordered an additional glass of wine while waiting, which never arrived. To top it off, my wife found a hair in her garlic mashed potatoes. She reported this to the waiter and hostess, but wasn't even offered an apology. Then the bill arrived. Although they had to be well aware of the awful service we received, they offered nothing. Not even a free round of drinks. I had to complain to get the delayed steak and potatoes with hair in them removed from the bill. Several other tables appeared to have major issues. We were excited to learn a new restaurant had opened in the old mill space in Cambridge since we live in nearby Waterloo and good restaurants are few and far between in our general area. My husband and I were meeting friends from Madison on Friday night and we got there first and put our name in for a table. It was busy and the hostess told us it would be a 45 minute wait. This was fine with us as it allowed us to relax in the bar with a drink and something light to eat while we waited for our friends to arrive. We grabbed a table for four by the windows since all bar stools were occupied. I ordered a nice red wine blend and my husband a beer. First sign of a place that knows what they are doing is the proper wine glass, which was definitely the case here. I don't like restaurants where they use the same cheap glass for everything and it isn't the right size or shape. For me this is a sign of good things to come. Off the bar is a semi-open kitchen area and that combined with the warm lighting, delicious smells, and sights and sounds of people working together to provide a fabulous meal invoke a feeling of being at a high-end dinner party. From where we sat it was clear things were hectic, as it seemed all hands were on deck and everyone, including the bartender and the hostess (who could have also been the owner) were bustling about. It took a few minutes to get our wine and the bartender came out from behind the bar to take care of us even though he was obviously busy. From there we got the attention of a waiter, who told us he was taking over our service and would remain our server throughout the evening. This was nice, and he was quite attentive in spite of doing double duty in the dining room and in the bar. We had read in a review that the calamari was great and we decided to try it. I'm not a fan of the rubber band-like texture of calamari in general, but Plow's version was delicious. It came lightly breaded with a slightly spicy dipping sauce and it was perfect light starter while we waited for our table. The hostess gave us an update on the status of our table shortly after our friends had arrived and this was also a nice surprise. True to her word, we were seated at right around 45 minutes. Back at our table we ordered the bread service and a Caesar salad for four, which was served family-style. This was also unusual, but a nice change from individual salads because it adds to the dinner party feel. It's also a clever move that adds an efficiency for a busy waiter who only has to assemble one salad instead of four, and gets the food to the table faster. The salad was perfectly dressed with a house-made dressing, huge slivers of cheese, and big croutons that were amazingly crunchy and soft at the same time. The bread was hot, fresh, and delicious, and at only $4 a wonderful value. It was tempting to order more, but we wanted to save room (and carb allowance) for our dinner. My husband, who was initially disappointed there was no fish on the menu, was happy to learn that a panko crusted cod was the special. We both ordered that and we were not disappointed. It had a light, but very crunchy breading and inside the fish was perfect. This was served with a boring rice pilaf and green beans almandine, which were made with fresh green beans perfectly cooked to retain a little crunch. Serving size was perfect. My friends ordered the chicken Alfredo and the Angus New York Strip with the optional addition of Oscar (crab meat, asparagus, and hollandaise). Both also loved their meals. Other reviews complained about the service, but on the night we were there it was spot on. It was busy, but our waiter stopped back at our table at all the right moments and everything was only a short wait. We definitely hope to eat at Plow often. read more

Went on a Friday night at 6:30, wait time for table was 30 minutes. Bartender seemed overwhelmed as had to wait for a drink. Tables in the bar are were full of dirty glasses and no one came to clean up the table the whole 30 minutes we waited. Once seated we waited an hour and a half (and I am not exaggerating) for our food!!!!!!. When the waiter brought our food he said "so for the ridiculous wait time"!!! We were told there was someone from a newspaper there and also they only had one cook. Really??????? The menu is VERY limited and was average tasting. Worst experience. Will not return. read more

Our party of four stopped at PLOW on our way to the US Open. It was a Wednesday night, and they were not busy. We had called ahead and made reservations. We were seated immediately. Our hostess and bartender were top-notch -- very friendly and hospitable. The food was outstanding. I had pork chop and beans. My wife had the breaded cod with asparagus. Our friends enjoyed the perch. Overall, a very good dining experience in a very unique, historical setting. Visiting from out of town we stopped at the Plow for dinner. It looked like one of the nicest places in the area. Cool exterior patio atmosphere with wood burning fire pits. Neat interior. We arrived early on a Friday night 5:00ish and were quickly greeted and seated. The place soon filled up. Cocktails and appetizer arrived soon. The bruschetta was fantastic. The specialty drinks were served in 1/2 size mini Martini glasses. My wife and I gave one another one of those surprised looks. Dinner arrived in an appropriate time frame. The meal presentation looked great, but fell short. I ordered the New York strip which tasted ok, but I had to fight gristle along one side... I had to discretely remove pieces from my mouth during dinner. The tail end of my steak was raw and I couldn't eat it. My garlic mashed potatoes tasted good, but were served cold. The kicker was the black bug crawling on the flower served on my dish. My wife said her chicken dish tasted great. Service feel short as the place became busier. We we never asked if we would like a second cocktail during dinner. My wife ordered coffee which arrived much later than hoped, but wash neatly served in a French Press and tasted good. Mixed emotions here. The bug is a fluke. I did expect much better with a $28 dollar steak prepared Oscar style for $36.00!!! My wife's dish was fairly priced at $16.00. The mini drinks were over priced at $8.50 each for the size. They would have been fair if served in a normal size Martini glass. The bar area was filled with smoke from the fire pits as we exited. Glad my wife's asthma wasn't set off. Locals say my opinion was what they hear a lot. Touch and go here. Good chef. Easy improvements would make this place great. read more

I had lunch at Plow last fall and I haven't forgotten the place yet. I dream about it and the pork sandwich I had there. It was THE BEST I have ever eaten. I'm not from the area, I'm from the south and I've eaten a lot of pork sandwiches in my life. So when I say it's the best I know what I'm talking about. I have to wait till I come back this fall on business to stop in again. The restaurant has a rustic elegance about it and the service was professional and knowledgeable of the menu and very pleasant. We really, really want this place to work. Love the beautiful old building and the outside patio. We have been there 3 times, each time we hope the service improves, but it has not. The last time we were there just stopped in for a drink on a Saturday night around 8:30 pm. We sat at the bar. There were two other couples at the bar and one table of five also in the bar. The dinning room had a few occupied tables but the place was not busy. Even the owner walked past us several times and never achnowledged us as did the bartender. We felt invisible and it was uncomfotable. After 15 minutes, we had to ask for service. Honestly we would have left but got into a lovely conversation with an elderly couple sitting next to us. Other times we have been there had similar experiences. The food is good, but I consider it overpriced since part of the dining experience is the good service. The service is slow and not friendly at all. We really love the Plow's Farm to Table commitment, just hope they can improve their service levels. read more

We love Plow! The owner Charles is engaging, fun and creative with his menu. My wife and I live in the Cambridge area and try to eat at Plow at least once a week. Last week I had the pork chop special....it was honestly the best chop I've ever tasted. It was a "bacon cut" chop.....simply divine. My wife enjoyed a linguine pasta and enjoyed that as well. They are very accommodating of gluten allergies (which my wife has) as well. I've enjoyed the coconut shrimp as well....in fact, it is my favorite meal at Plow and I force myself to order other items on the menu. Great atmosphere, and great food! Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would find an amazing restaurant in Cambridge, Wisconsin, where we stayed for a brief getaway from Chicago. PLOW's atmosphere was pleasant and inviting, with jazz music playing in the background. My husband had the special of the day, a wild caught, smoked Alaskan salmon with fresh dill and I had the eggplant parmigiana. Both entrees were superb. The smokiness of the salmon was delicious and the eggplant slices were nice and thick with a wonderful crispy batter. We met Charles and Treena Fiesel, the owners, and complimented them on the wonderful dinners and their establishment, opened about 8 months ago. Because we enjoyed Charles' cooking so much, we returned to PLOW for a 2nd straight night, and had his tender smoked prime rib special, and an even more amazing charcuterie plate. Charles and Treena (along with his entire family) have a restaurant worth noticing. Charles brings his wonderful culinary skills to the area, and they are sourcing as much of their ingredients for their menu from their own local farms. Even after a long, hard day working in the kitchen, Charles came out to greet his customers. He and his wife are warm, gregarious, and generous people. We highly recommend PLOW! read more

Walked in around 7:00 p.m. on a Friday. It was not busy. We were not greeted, we waited & finally someone said, "Be right with you." Then about five minutes later another "Be right with you." and another a few minutes after that. Finally sat in the back dining area. Super cute restaurant. Very charming, great lighting, loved the decor. I ordered a brandy old fashioned and it was really good. My husband got a glass of Cabernet & it was a weak pour, but no big deal. We ordered the warm sourdough as an appetizer, it came out within a reasonable amount of time & it was tasty. We then ordered our food, I got the mushroom eggplant parmigiana, he got the fettuccine with chicken. We waited a good twenty minutes for our food which was very frustrating. We were never asked if we needed drink refills, and our waters weren't refilled. When we finally got our food it was delicious. We both loved it. We also shared the side of vegetables and they were delicious as well. After we ate, the server walked up to the table and asked if we were finished, we said yes, and she walked away & came back with the check, no offer for refills or dessert. No refills on water or cocktails at all during the meal. I said, "Don't you have dessert?" She said yes, a Ghiradelli brownie. We opted not to have dessert. We were both surprised we had to ask though. Dirty plates were never picked up, drinks never refilled. Great food, great atmosphere. The check was $55. Pretty reasonable. So far they are only open Thurs, Fri & Saturday, for dinner. No menu online, but when we went the menu they gave us was dated, so I think they will be changing their menu daily. Their cocktail menu also seems set to change regularly. I'll have to be back to try their take on an old fashioned (made with rye according to the menu). Entrees when I went included steak, prime rib, pasta, shrimp and flat breads. Sides were available to select family style. Bread service was also on the menu as an appetizer. I had the bread service, asparagus, brussels sprouts, and the slow smoked prime rib. The bread was served warm (house made maybe?) with butter, olive oil and vinegar. It would be nice if it was included in the meal, but worth the extra charge. The vegetables were lightly seasoned and were good portions to share. I was very pleased with the prime rib. It was very tender and the smoked flavor was nicely balanced. Service was a little awkward, but prompt and attentive. I thought their dinning room could be better lit. It was a bit dark and cold in the corner I was seated in. Overall I was really happy with the meal and thought that their prices were a good value for a nice meal out. read more

My husband and I wanted to give this place a chance. Even though I've been here a handful of times with poor experiences, we had yet to eat here so I felt I couldn't write a review until we had the full experience. We got there at about 6pm on a Friday night, were told it would be a 30 min wait. No problem, we'll have drinks at the bar. As we grabbed a seat, I noticed other guests looking around like they hadn't been tended to in some time. It took us 10 mins to get a glass of wine and a tap beer. I then see a group of four ask the bartender why such a long wait. The group next to us had a reservation, but it wasn't in the books so they had to wait too...not a good sign for us. After another round of drinks we start looking at the time, we have now been waiting 45 mins....then an hour. My husband asks if we're being seated soon, the hostess/owner tells him it's going to be another 20 mins. He's ready to leave, but again I truly wanted to give this place a chance. I then went and explained this to the hostess/owner. She seemed a bit embarrassed and offered us a bottle of wine. So I returned to the bar and we then waited another 15 minutes for said complementary bottle of wine. Eventually we were seated, but you could just feel an overall frustration from the tables around us. Looking around, people were just waiting for their food, people that got seated probably a half hour before we did. The hostess/owner could sense our frustration and waited on us herself. The food was great, probably the best available in this little town (though a very limited menu). But in order to run a successful restaurant, you can't just rely on good food. They need the help of a restaurant consultant because they clearly do not know how to run one. Another thing I would recommend is hustle behind the bar. We've been there prior to this experience and have ordered drinks off their cocktail menu only to be told they're out of certain things (for three different occasions). Well they no longer offer that menu, which is disappointing because foodies like myself enjoy a good house special cocktail. read more

First the good news - Food was good. Service was like a three ring circus. First we sat at the bar to order drinks while waiting for a table. For over 10 minutes, we watched bartenders walk by, chat with other customers, stack clean glassware - no greeting, no acknowledgement, and of course, no drinks. When we ordered our drinks, the bartender took the bottle of beer out of the cooler and proceeded to turn it end over end before opening. He was surprised when it foamed out upon opening and still gave us the "not full" bottle of beer. The dining room was chaotic. No one seemed to know what their responsibilities were. Both the hostess and waiter brought us our water. When a drink order was announced at the window into the bar, both waiters and the hostess ran to the window. No one took charge as to who was supposed to be there. Then we looked at the view into the kitchen when the doors swung open. There was a substantial accumulation of dust under the visible storage racks and a large assortment of cleaning chemicals under the large sink. Not completely sure of the rules, but thought previously opened chemical containers were not supposed to be stored near open/exposed food. I hope things settle down for Plow so they can make a go in this location. read more

Out first and only time I'll ever be in the Plow! Went with a party of five and had the worst dining experiences of my life and I've been around a while. This was the first time I've walked out before my meal arrived. We were seated right away as it wasn't very busy. Our drinks and appetizers came right away then the horror began. We were told there were no shrimp so that eliminated a third of the menu. Four of us ordered the special so we figured we shouldn't have a problem. We were wrong. After an hour we asked if there was a problem and were told there was no problem. 15 minutes later one member of our party wa told they were out of what was ordered and it was one of the specials! Are you kidding they didn't know this an hour ago!! Finally after we couldn't get a straight answer to a time we would be served we offered to pay for what we had and leave. Romantic and delicious meal at The Plow for Valentine's Day on Saturday night. We sat upstairs - lower lighting and comfy and spacious seating. We had the Valentine's Sweetheart Special - including Bread Service, an appetizer to share - we had shrimp cocktail - the tomato bisque, a salad to share. I had the chicken cordon bleu and my husband had the filet. The dessert to share was a very generous slice of black forest layer cake with cherry chocolate ice cream - which was to die for! All of the food was delicious and my husband raved about the steak. The criticism I would have would be that the steak portion was a little small for a man, especially, and the salad could've used a few other veggies/cheese/croutons. The meal included 2 glasses of wine. We came away filled to the brim and very happy with our experience. The total check was $54.00, extremely reasonable. Right now they are only open 3 nights/week - the Chef mentioned that they are hoping to first add in a Sunday Brunch - when they do, we will be there! I'm ready to go back already. read more

Very expensive, very slow service, extremely unorganized. No salad, bread, or anything with our meal. The bill was completely screwed up, we were given the couple next to us their bill. Small portions and we left there and had to have more food. We will not go back. read more
