We're always on the lookout for new cuisines, and we love exploring international flavors. We wanted to venture outside the city for a culinary adventure. This place is an hour away, but the scenic route to Lake Geneva makes it worth the drive. In contrast, city traffic can take an hour and a half, even longer during peak hours. We visited twice, and during our second reservation, we couldn't resist making a third reservation for next month! As you can see in the pictures on their website, the food is beautifully presented, and each dish is unique and incredibly delicious. The prices are also very reasonable, which is a huge plus for us. I was overwhelmed at my first experience at the Opus before going to see the Journey Tribute band next door at the Belfry. From the start, the minimal yet well appointed decor was perfect for this venue. Front of the house waitstaff was incredibly knowledgeable of the exquisite menu and its preparation. This matched the waitresses depth of understand the wine offering. Now to the back of the house which highlighted a sparkling white open kitchen directed by Chef Eric. His 5 course menu could match any Chicago or Milwaukee fine dining restaurant. Each plate was artistically created pairing color, texture and taste. 5 Stars..... this is a gem of a fine dining experience just a few minutes west of Lake Geneva. We came to Opus for dinner on a Friday evening while visiting Illinois. I tried to make a reservation online, but the earliest available time showing was 8:45 PM. We decided to go anyway and arrived around 7:45 PM, only to find out they actually close at 8 PM on Fridays, which was surprising and a bit confusing. There was also no indoor dining available--only patio seating--which caught us off guard. That said, the staff and chef were phenomenal. They kindly welcomed us in despite the late hour and made sure we were well taken care of. We were so appreciative of their hospitality and warmth. It had been hard to find a fine dining spot in the area with both good food and good cocktails, so we were excited. While the cocktails were just okay, the food more than made up for it. The chef did an excellent job--every dish was flavorful, well-prepared, and beautifully presented, all the way through to dessert. We enjoyed our time in the charming patio area, and the service and food were truly excellent. If you're in Illinois and looking for a unique dining experience with heart and quality, I definitely recommend giving Opus a try. read more

My favorite color "palatte" is the one you can eat! This restaurant is in its own class here in the Lake Geneva area. Chef Franklin Perdue presents the most artistic dishes that taste as good as they look. The ingredients are local, organic, and/or wild caught. The uniqueness of flavors will be remembered. I am pleased to discover that the quality of dining experience you would find at a Michelin starred restaurant in Chicago is right here in Williams Bay. Brought my husband here for his birthday dinner. We had the planned menu and then the wine pairing to go with it. The food was very good and full of flavor. But we left still hungry. This has to be one of the most challenging reviews I have written, perhaps ever. In many ways, the core experience is entirely there. Chef Kim Buyse may be new to the States and new to Opus, but his food is skillful, elegant, and delicious. You can see from the photos what I am talking about here - each plate delivering greatly on flavor. Based on other accounts, Chef Kim may be a little less flamboyant in personality than his predecessor, but his flavors speak volumes; by and large we were blown away. My hope for Chef Kim is that as he settles in here at Opus, that he gets the opportunity to become more and more daring, courageous, and really show us what Asian-French high-end cuisine can look like, because that combination seems like it could be very special. If the shiitake mushroom tart is any indication of what's to come, Lake Geneva may become an epicenter of Midwestern haute cuisine with Opus at The Belfry House dead center. On the flip side, my goodness are there some inconsistencies between these plates and what leads you up to the table. Website is inaccurate and broken in spots with respect to the menu. There is no outer signage visible from the road, in advance, that says either Opus or Belfry House - just "Belfry Theatre." This is the place by the way you want to be at - it is the second building. Based on other guest feedback on-site and online, that seems to be a very common talking point. Bluntly, fix it! This hotel and restauraunt has opened at a very challenging time in the food and beverage industry, let alone the very courageous, perhaps daring approach Opus chooses to take with its cuisine. I hope that Opus can ultimately find and rally behind its voice in the months and years to come, because I believe it has the potential to be a Michelin gem in an area with piles of steakhouses and few true artists. Taste buds enjoyed different flavors from soup to meat. The service was attentive and perfectly paced. It was nice the chef came out to visit during the meal. My wife and I stayed at The Belfry House, ate dinner at the Opus At The Belfry House, and enjoyed a wonderful show at the Belfry Music Theater. The Opus At The Belfry House is a 5-Star top-of-its-class restaurant. We opted for the five course dinner rather than seven courses. Each course was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. They were sized to fill but not overly stuff a healthy appetite. The restaurant is beautiful with a view to the kitchen and the chef preparing your meal. The waitress was knowledgeable and gracious. She explained the background and preparation of each course and its accompanying wine as she presented it. Listen this isn't chicago so don't expect chicago value, quality, or quantity. The location was poorly marked. So it was hard to tell where to park. Also being a black woman the parking people were surprised that I was eating there. The location was nice once you found the entrance. But the website where I made the reservation said I could order entrees but in fact they only did a set of very small snacks. It was very overpriced. Very homie and Midwestern ingredients. If I wasn't Jewish and ate pork, maybe I'd have enjoyed it more. The price point wasn't that high, but the quality was too low. It would have been ok at $40 or $50, but at $150 I expect more. read more

I cannot believe it! We have a Michelin star caliber restaurant in Delavan, WI! My birthday dinner today transported me to France and provided with an unforgettable experience. All I can say is that every single dish on today's menu created by Chef Philippe Chevalier and his team was a masterpiece of the visual presentation and the quintessence of the flavors. Hidden gem! Outstanding service and unbelievable food. We dined at this restaurant 2 times and each experience was consistently perfect. Our server took the time to get to know us personally and was genuine and exceptional. The Chef went out of his way to check on each table during dinner. He was very professional and interested in our dining experience. Dining at this restaurant will transport you to a beautiful little European town. From the glassware, table setting and personalized scroll menu it will leave you wanting to come back again. My first time doing a multi course meal. I was very excited to find this place. I was even more excited with each and every dish that came out. Asparagus gazpacho, wild boar pate, lamb, filet, desserts that were perfectly sweet without being overwhelming. The wine pairing was exceptional as well. It's an experience. My only complaint is the one toilet that was working the flush was broken. Also, the rolls they gave us were a little harder than I would expect from a place like this. While the restaurant is only a tasting chef-selected option of 5 or 7 courses it is of high quality and high value. Any major cities would be twice the price. Open kitchen concept is a class-act. Chef Kim needs no comment but this must be said... His works are high art for every dish. Seating is minimal and the lobby should be tabled for summertime overflow. Servers are average rank and file, likely untrained in French food pronunciation or sommelier services with such fine foods and an excellent wine cellar. Improvements would be additional kitchen help, bussers and full-time bartender to complete the effectiveness of the dining experience, as well as allow for a future ala carte menu that doesn't withhold sole, salmon, lobster, lamb, Châteaubriand, bouillabaisse, etc. Entrance for the venue is in the building to the left of the Belfry (the hotel's front doors --and not the theatre building). read more

My boyfriend and I went to the Bacon Festival in Lake Geneva a few weeks ago and decided to make a weekend trip out of it. For brunch on Saturday we went to Opus at the Belfry House. This place is absolutely gorgeous and amazing! This place is a small little restaurant located inside the Belfry House (a quaint little hotel that is incredibly elegant and luxurious). The quality in food and service is unmatched from any place I've ever been to. I ordered a plain egg omelette with cheese and I had sausages and broccolini on the side; my boyfriend ordered the eggs Benedict. Everything was hand crafted with intense care and precision from the freshly squeezed orange juice to the freshly made yogurt; the orange juice I had was so fresh and sweet, it tasted as if I was biting right into the sweetest orange; it was delicious! I have never had freshly made yogurt in my entire life and after having it, it's so hard to go back to processed yogurt. If you enjoy fine dining and want the experience of enjoying top notch food but don't want to pay too much, I'd recommend going for brunch. They accept reservations only and you must pay $75 just to book a spot (they refund the $75 after you show up). This place is definitely worth a trip! Also, great fresh juices and coffees. Opus at the Belfry House is very lucky to have Chef Philippe at their Executive Chef. Chef is attentive detail and it is worth a trip. Take it from a Chef with thirty plus years in the business of fine dining. A bargain for the price. Once the management and ownership invest in proper landscaping and parking, making sure the place matches Philippe's cooking, it will become the place to go in the area. I have been to many restaurants in Chicago and around the United States and this restaurant is up with the best of them. The dinner menu is delicious, fun and beautiful! I recommend adding the wine pairing. The chef is innovative and engaging. If you are adventurous you might even get the chef to create something new for you! We were planning on ordering from the breakfast menu but the chef asked if we would up for something different. He didn't disappoint! We had sweet and savory crepes that were amazing! This has become our go-to dining experience in the Lake Geneva area. Even with just having been open a month or two, they are definitely the best personalized dining experience in the lakes area. Most people haven't discovered it yet, as it's in an unmarked building next to the Belfry Theater on Highway 67. But the chef is amazing with his menu and work with flavors and presentation. The server Bud has been superb both of our visits, once for dinner and once for breakfast. The environment and attention to detail is unsurpassed in the area and better than most high-end dining experiences in Chicago or Milwaukee without the snobbery or high prices. We're hoping that enough discriminating people find this so they can have a sustainable, rich future of many years to come! read more

Fair meal at Opus. We were delighted to see such an offering in the Williams Bay Area, but they've just missed the mark. Maybe they are still working out things but disappointing nonetheless. Service was not what you would expect from a fine dining restaurant and food was just ok. Meat course was overcooked and tough. Plates were not explained. We did the tasting menu which looked amazing on paper and the best aspect from it was the wine pairing which was terrific. The cheese course was also very tasty. Hope things improve as we are willing to try again and the bay is in need of better restaurants especially ones that have such good potential to be differentiated. read more

My husband and I did not realize Williams Bay had a new restaurant in town. We were excited to check out Opus at The Belfry House. We had no idea of what to expect and we were blown away by our experience at the restaurant. My husband said he looked forward all day to a romantic dinner at this new restaurant. We were thrilled the evening was so wonderful. When we walked in the front door, it instantly felt warm and cozy with sexy lighting, soothing aroma and a roaring fire. Social distancing was clearly in place with the lay out of the lobby and dining area. After a few minutes in front of fire, we were escorted into the dining area. It felt like we were among friends as the entire staff was so warm and welcoming. Both my husband and I were first wowed by simply sitting down at the table. The chairs were so comfortable. We have NEVER noticed chairs to stand out in a restaurant. These chairs definitely stood out and both of us took notice of the comfort. Another great detail was the waxed seal on the menu. (see photos) I have not seen a waxed seal for years! So simply breaking the seal, opening the menu and then seeing it was customized specifically with our name on top welcoming us to our Dinner Party continued to exceed our expectations. We could see the Chef and the staff preparing our meal. The waiter was AWESOME and assisted us in the perfect wine pairing for our dinners. They have over 300 different types of wine. The waiter took so much time with us, which made us feel so relaxed and not rushed. We looked forward to enjoying our dinner as we watched the pleased expressions of other dinner guests as they raved about their soup/entrees. We were not disappointed, the dinner was exceptional! Overall, this restaurant had the ambiance and relaxation of a spa experience that beautifully complimented an extraordinary Fine Dining experience. In reading previous reviews, I wonder what happened the night I and my friends were there. It was a five course prix fixe menu for $135. The first course was a cucumber soup, the second a tomato tartlet (the best part of the meal) or rabbit terrine. Third course was poached lobster (claw) or halibut(tasteless-a nice sauce would have been good). The fourth course was squab (so gamey I couldn't eat) or wild boar( sinewy.) I thought the dessert might be the saving grace for this disastrous meal. I ordered the tarte meringue citron. It was small dollops of lemon meringue -nothing tarty about it. My host had the hazlenut sponge cake which was the size of a waverly wafer. I felt terrible for my friend who insisted on treating me and another guest. Needless to say, she will not be back and has told other friends about our experience. I hope the chef changes his menu to something not as gourmet with a better choice of food as I would very much like to dine there again before seeing a show at the Belfry Theater (always a delightful experience). read more
