Edgar Allen Poe served at nearby Fort Moultrie hence the name. The burgers are named after his stories. I ordered the Pit and Pendulum. Our son ordered the Gold Bu (I think) and my wife ordered the Shrimp Salad Sandwich. They both ordered fries and I ordered onion straws. My wife absolutely loved her sandwich. She thought it was fantastic. Our son enjoyed his burger also. IMO, the burger I had o-is probably in my top five of all time. Stopped in one night after a walk on the beach. First visit, but I had heard that they had good burgers. We were quickly seated outside in the front at a picnic table. Our server was very friendly. I had been hearing about this spot for years and finally made it out this way- it was a cute spot and I'm super happy the outside was pet friendly! We ordered the fish tacos with a side of fries to start and then shared a burger- it had goat cheese and a pepper jelly substance. My wife and I went to Poe's this past Saturday night. We got in right away which is very unusual. I ordered the bunless burger on top of fries and smothered in chili and a draft beer. I ordered the burger medium. The draft beer was warm which i can deal with but when my meal came to the table the burger was raw. I called the waitress over and the first thing she said was that is raw...she apologized and said they would recook my meal and get it out to me right away. Well when they brought me my new meal and I cut into the burger it was raw again. The waitress came over and apologized profusely, offered to do another attempt at the burger or make me a quesadilla but i had lost my appetite. My wife finished shrimp salad meal which was just ok and we left. I've been a big fan of Poe's Tavern for several years. Unfortunately I rarely find the time to make the trek out to enjoy it. Poe's Tavern is Edgar Allen Poe themed. Everywhere you look you'll see his face plastered across the interior walls and find nods to his work on the menu. The food is incredible. My favorite and go to is The Sleeper with the buffalo shrimp but to be honest, I've never had a bad menu item. Everything is delicious. That staff remains fun and inviting l, ensuring you're enjoying yourself and your meal. 10/10 recommend and then take a stroll on the beach after to walk off the large meal you just ate lol. read more

The a Amantiallo looked wonderful but was undercooked and lacked seasoning which is a shame because it had great potential. The hand cut fries were crispy and good. The Rue Morgue was also just ok. Our waitress was rude, got our order wrong, charged us for the wrong food and the correct food, took 30 minutes to bring the correct order back out. It was a burger ordered as medium and came out as raw as I've ever seen. There's an open kitchen where we watched the cooks touch their hair without gloves and immediately handle food. Ate outside on the upper porch last night. Ordered a burger and mahi mahi tacos. Tacos were cold. Not even warm. When sitting on the porch it's bar self-service which means no one's going to come around after dropping off the food to check on quality of food or needs. I could have waited at the bar to request a new order but the line was long and the bartenders busy. Management, I'd recommend ensuring food quality is up to your normal standards and check on the people sitting on the upper deck after the food is delivered. Poor service from that aspect. read more

I had the Pit & Pendulum burger w/ bacon, cheese and a side of fries (sorry for the lousy pic). Regarding the ambiance, its open air. There is indoor & outdoor dining. PT is very casual. Emily was a super nice & attentive waitress. The only things I did not like was a 3% "service" charge, and not receiving an itemized bill so I could tip accordingly. I generally tip 20% of the pre-tax amount. The auto generated tip on the portable POS unit tips on the plus tax amount. All in all, a positive experience. At least we found parking adjacent, which is more than I can say for the remainder of Charleston. read more

There are two parking areas one right along side of the restaurant and spots are tight. The other adjacent to that with some mad pot holes that can be a challenge to negotiate with a big vehicle. I normally try to go to a place more than once before I post a review, but honestly this wouldn't be worth it for multiple reasons. The first is that there always seems to be a long wait outside. If the food was worth the wait, I would consider spending an hour and a half waiting for a table. The second reason is the food isn't worth the wait. It was very bland, and our burgers were underdone. The fries were fine, I guess. They're known for their burgers but there was nothing special about them. Don't forget you're also paying Sullivan's Island prices: my burger, the Hop Frog - with BBQ sauce, Monterey Jack cheese, and bacon - ended up being $19. That's a lot for a mediocre burger. The third - and this is most likely a one-off - is the waiter we got was kind of rude. He did appear to be one of only two servers on the floor, with others primarily being food runners, but he didn't really talk with us and ignored our table for most of the time we were at the restaurant. Maybe this place is better for drinks? We didn't get any alcohol so we can't speak on that, but the bar area looked okay. There was also a fireplace which was lit while we were there, so that was nice. The highlight of the meal was probably going outside and buying some Girl Scout cookies from kids in the parking lot. I would go somewhere else if on Sullivans. Home Team is right across the street and the food & drinks are better and worth the price. read more
