Can't miss restaurant in charleston- of the best meals I've had in a while! They do have a full restaurant and more of a tavern area, and we sat in the tavern. It was intimate and cozy, perfect ambiance for a sweet date night! Reservations definitely recommended. We ordered a little bit of everything- biscuit, chicory salad, salmon crudo, swordfish, and pork rigatoni. Everything was excellent, specifically the salad and the swordfish! I truly think the chicory salad is the best salad I've ever had. The portion sizes were perfect and everything was super fresh and flavorful. We paired our dinner with a Verdejo white wine and it was amazing. The staff were super knowledgeable and descriptive with the menu options. While we were 100% satisfied with our choices, we kept eyeing the schnitzel and the burger that everyone was ordering. I came to Lowland Tavern after a Spoleto Festival performance with friends. The overall location was a convenient 6 minutes walking distance from the Gaillard Center. Upon entering, the restaurant was VERY dimly lit with a tavern-like aesthetic. We started with drinks: a hugo spritz and a campari spritz. Both were good! Unfortunately, things kind of went downhill a bit after that--not because of the food, but mainly for the service. Our waitress seemed annoyed with our party from the get-go. To be fair, some of our friends did arrive about 25 minutes later than expected (from another Spoleto event), but we were very up front about their delay upon arriving to the restaurant. Beyond that, our waitress just never smiled and always gave us looks that just made us feel like a burden. The menu is also poorly organized. Appetizers are not separated from mains--which is annoying when you're deciding what you want (thinking it's a main when it's not). For appetizers, we ultimately ordered the lowland biscuit, the celery salad, and the yellowfun tuna + snapper crudo. All were very tasty and well made! The celery salad is so refreshing! But that biscuit is absolutely delicious! We loved all of them! For my main, I split a tavern burger with my sister. Also very good and very cheesy! Our friends ordered drinks and the butterscotch desert. We all enjoyed the food, just wish the menu was better delineated and the service was better. For my campari spritz, and splitting the appetizers/main, I paid $91.60 with tax and tip. Given that Charleston has so many amazing restaurants, I'm not sure my first choice would be to return here purely due to the aforementioned. I'm giving them 4/5 stars purely for the food. read more

Had an amazing experience at Lowland--easily the best meal of our Charleston trip. The service and ambiance was exceptional: warm, attentive, and truly the best we experienced in the city. The mushroom bucatini was outstanding--rich and full of flavor--and the swordfish was perfectly cooked. Dessert was a highlight as well, especially the mocha tart. We had another great dining experience at Lowland recently. This time we invited 2 other couples to join us on a Sunday night, and boy did they deliver some amazing food. We had fun sitting on the first floor enjoying several starters and cocktails. There were many favorites including the Lowland biscuits, shrimp cocktail, crispy SC quail, but the best bites were the celery salad and the carrots. Yes the veggies were excellent. Three of us had the schnitzel and it was amazing. My husband had a delicious mushroom bucatino, that i had to try a few times. Our server Mia did a great job with our table, making good suggestions for us, and keeping up with our drinks. After all that the butterscotch budino made the experience perfect. 10/10! Perfection! Cozy, intimate, candlelit, romantic nook - a true hidden gem. Not only Lowland had a dreamy atmosphere, but the food was the best we had in Charleston. We loved in so much we went twice in the week we visited! The grilled grouper was light and flavorful, the rigatoni was made in house and delicious, and the pork schnitzel was the best I've ever had - it was perfectly crispy, served with light squash puree and a hint of acidity. It absolutely stole the show. For dessert, the buttermilk panna cotta was my favorite, and the butterscotch pot de creme was my boyfriend's. Our server was spectacular and attentive. Second stop on my walk around. Enjoyed a local beer that was a take on key lime pie. After hearing basically everything as a recommendation- I chose the SC Quail- wasn't sure if it was different from other quail but the bartender described it and I thought I would give it a try. Good choice. It was deep fried - maybe 1 minute too long or old oil because the breading was a bit dark. The quail was cooked well but did not have much flavor. The dressing bit was pooled in was average. I did not have to work too hard to get the meat off the bones which was appreciated. This is another restaurant in a historic house. Stopped in for one of our 1st dinners in Charleston and it did not disappoint! Incredible service; Natalie was so awesome and Mia was also incredibly attentive and noticed my glass of wine was empty (for about 15 seconds lol) and offered another round, even without being our server. I have some severe allergies and Natalie was quick to ask the chef about every single item we wanted; we were able to make a few adjustments and enjoy everything! This was our favorite restaurant we've been to in a minute. We sat in the main restaurant on the second floor and appreciated how beautiful of a space it was and the fact noise did not carry. We ordered the celery salad and biscuit to start. The celery salad would not be a typical order for us but my husband said it was his favorite bite of the night. Do not skip it. I'd love to take a dozen of the biscuits to go. They are thick and delicious. We then got the seafood pasta and short rib. We started with the biscuit -- perfectly baked, fluffy inside with just the right crisp on the outside, and the cheese + pepper jelly combination was spot on. We came here for the burger after hearing about how good it was. It was very good and they did cook it perfectly as we requested. The inside is very rustic elegant, cute little patio, very upscale. It's a bit similar to Husk since it's downtown Charkeston. The prices were very high - there clearly were people that ate here very regularly and had deep pockets but if you don't for example, a glass of chardonnay wine is $22 or $27 per carefully poured wine. Another place that I've been hearing a lot about and was excited to try. We snagged an 8:30 reservation and got this cute little table by their candle fire place. The place has a great ambiance and quite romantic. Our server was this handsome young man and had a great personality. He told us about the menu and made some suggestions. He raved about the celery salad and for someone who hates celery I wasn't excited but he convinced us to try it! I got Corrine Corrina cocktail and it was light and refreshing. It reminded me of a French 75 but with vodka instead. Celery salad - surprisingly did not have that super potent flavor that I don't like about celery and it went well with the dates, mint was very strong in the dish. I didn't hate it, and I didn't love it, but I did like the few bites I had. I can see why so many people do love this salad though if they enjoy celery. Curried Brandade Fritter- super crispy on the outside and then you cut into that mixture of potatoes and salt cod and that slight curry flavor. What a unique combination and pleasant to eat with both textures. Crispy quail- I was most excited about this dish and it was my favorite overall. Juicy, crispy and tender quail and I could've eaten an entire platter of it. Pork schnitzel - pork and cabbage are a classic and I thought it was cooked well. I would've liked just a bit more cabbage to pork ratio but the overall flavors were good. I'm looking forward to trying some of their larger entree dishes next time! read more

When we approached this Resturant, it didn't look like there was anything going on from the street. Once we entered, we found it completely full. We didn't have reservation reservations, but we're seated at a table for two by the bar. It's a typical tavern environment where it's loud but still good and not too loud. We had an excellent dinner! First, we have to hand it to the Graham who took care of us tonight as he was excellent. I can't remember having a person more knowledgeable about every intricate detail of a menu It was as if Graham was back in the kitchen helping prep each dish. So on to the food, which was sometimes different, but always delicious. We started with the Cheryl Day Biscuit with farmer cheese, pepper jelly This is a very large Square Super flaky and buttery Biscuit that is large enough to share. The biscuit is served with A generous portion Farmer Cheese And a pepper Jelly that Paired together for a perfect Bite. The second Appetizer we shared was the Grouper Collar Brandade Fritters and a comeback sauce. This is not your ordinary grouper Collar, as it's not served in a normal collar fashion. As explained to us By Graham, Grouper Collars are obviously a bit messy to eat, so they make what I would call a Croquet by cooking the collar then removing the meat to make Fritter/Croquet. The taste wasn't dissimilar to a creamy fish cake. We were lucky that the crudo was Blue fin tuna with thin shaved radishes. This is a very clean dish that needed just a pinch of salt or acid. Thankfully we had some lemon from the grouper dish which completed the Crudo nicely. The wife ordered the New York strip with gnocchi and roasted carrots. The steak was cooked perfectly but pre sliced which might have been done to hide the steaks portion size. Although the steak portion was a bit small, it was more than enough for the wife. She loved the entire dish, and especially enjoyed the roasted carrots. I ordered the Very unusual yet delicious Pork Schnitzel. I mean, who in the right mind fries a beautiful piece of pork to perfection, then tops it with heirloom tomato, fresh chunks of cucumber, a buttermilk vinaigrette, and finishes it with smoked roe. Totally odd right, but it definitely works. There is plenty of the heirloom tomato, (See Photo), to cover each byte and the smoke row provided a beautiful saltiness for the entire dish. Again, a weird combination that I really enjoyed. We finished our meal with a blueberry hand pie with a smear of whipped cream. We enjoyed the dessert with two Fresh cups of decaf coffee. A wonderful way to end a fabulous meal. All and all a lovely meal for our anniversary. read more

This James beard award winning chef Jason Stanhope will not disappoint with classic dishes and glorious comfort food. Whether you dine upstairs in the Dining Room or the Parlour Room or the Tavern Room downstairs - which was a former carriage house- you'll feel like you are back in the 1700's. Bronze wall lanterns , wooden beams, Venetian damask wallpaper and fireplaces make the rooms feel very elegant and luxurious. Staff and servers are friendly and made you feel welcome. Tonight we met Graham who was a wonderfully friendly and attentive server. He served us with a smile and made sure we had everything that we needed to ensure that we had a great meal! Take some time to look around in the different rooms at Lowland. The rooms contain some great pieces of artwork on the walls; namely a hand painted Spanish moss inspired mural in the Dining Room upstairs done by Dean Barger and numerous pieces of local antiques that are so fitting and work so well in this establishment. I love the cozy corner leather booths and the restored wood burning fireplaces just finish off the mood in the rooms. The Tavern Burger was prepared perfectly and served with French fries. This place is so unique! Every room feels like you're walking through a wealthy home in the south with different decor. I traveled alone, so I sat at the bar and enjoyed conversation with the bartender. Staff was extremely friendly and inviting. The bartender even recommended swapping out the fish that was on the menu with Tilefish.... Excellent choice. My cocktail was easy to sip but so boozy, perfect combination. Here's the lowdown on Lowland. We will breakdown our review below: (1) Ambiance: 9/10, very nice, warm, romantic interior and decor. (2) Staff: 6/10 Friendly but not well dressed for a Michelin star restaurant. Jeans and casual attire for a hostess is not what you expect. We were expecting a more polished staff presentation we see at other Charleston dining spots. (3) Service: 7/10 Adequate and friendly service but lacks polish for a restaurant that is ostensibly a Michelin ranked establishment. Our table had crumbs after our appetizer and salad but table was not cleaned. Restaurant doesn't have a phone! We were unable to notify them that we were running late due to a serious accident on the bridge. (4) Value/Cocktail: 5/10, We ordered an Old Fashioned and while it was OK, it was very expensive at $20 relative to all Charleston restaurants we've dined at except Halls Chophouse, where the same cocktail is almost twice the pour. The poor value impacting the rating. While we didn't order their burger, it's listed at a ridiculous $28 and their menu notes that if you want pickles, it will be an extra $2. So a $28 burger here (vs $18 at Halls Chophouse) doesn't even get you pickles. You may get pickle-n-dimed if this is representative of how add-ons to appetizers and entrees are priced. (5) Biscuit: 6/10, served cold and obviously not recently baked for $8. We had it before and it was very good then. (6) Celery Salad: 8/10, and very good but very expensive and not a good value at $22. (7) Entrees: 4/10. The rigatoni with pork sugo had noodles that were overcooked and not al dente. The sugo was unremarkable and had an off putting taste like Chef Boyardee. We prefer the pasta at Wild Olive, Indaco or Le Farfalle. The pork schnitzel was similarly unremarkable in taste, and a poor value at $42 to let's say the $38 thick pork chop with accompaniments at SNOB. In summary, we wouldn't return as we dine often and there are better options for us in Charleston. It's unclear how this is a Michelin ranked restaurant based on our experience. This Michelin fell flat. read more
