I've been coming to Dunleavy's since I was in high school, and it never stops feeling like home. There's a warmth here that's hard to put into words -- friendly faces behind the bar, the regulars, that Irish flag waving out front invites you in. I fell in love with this place enough to ask if I could play live music here back in my 30s. Ten years later, I'm bringing my husband and kids through the door, sand still on our feet from a day at the beach, ready to relax. I just want to say the burger was point on. It brought so many memories from when I lived in Maryland and used to go to the ponabird . And not to mention it was served with chips. Dunleavy's is a local dive bar. I'm involved with a nonprofit organization that organizes several 5K road races on the island each year. Dunleavy's opens the bar EARLY and they are always open once we finish post-5K cleanup. You won't find fancy cocktail menus here. There's a tap beer list with typical beers and a few local selections, and the bartenders make typical simple drinks. Inflation has skipped Dunleavy's for now, as simple well drinks are $6 even money Dunleavy's food is good for bar fare. Come here for drinks after the beach, but not for the food specifically. Sullivan's Island has a few amazing restaurants, but be advised that you will pay a LOT more anywhere else. This bar is cash only, but the on-site ATM comes in handy if you don't have any. Sometimes one of us will pay and others will Venmo. Everything is amazingly clean, even the bathrooms. Inside, you'll find vintage license plates, newspaper clippings, and lots to look at while waiting on food and drinks, but you won't have to wait long. If you're sweaty, you can sit out front, but it's not a great seating option for those with pets or children as it is very close to the road. read more

Cash only--but don't panic, they've got their own ATM. We're from Iowa, so "cash only" doesn't scare us--it actually adds credibility. If your bar doesn't have a neon beer sign and a 20-year-old ATM humming in the corner, we're suspicious. Dunleavy's is exactly what we love: laid-back, good-natured, and just the right amount of salty. We grabbed a seat inside (though the outdoor seating is perfect this time of year), and I immediately knew the bartender was a real one--three baseball games and the PGA tournament on the TVs. Not just playing--curated. That's a sports fan. We came in for a beer or two and ended up ordering the PEI mussels. They were shockingly good--like "am I still on Sullivan's Island?" good. Get them. Ask for extra bread. You'll want to mop up every last drop. Our server, Angela, was amazing--warm, funny, and from Boston, which probably explains how she managed to be both sarcastic and genuinely helpful at the same time. She gave us solid local tips and somehow didn't flinch when we told her we were from Iowa. In short: Dunleavy's is the kind of place you pretend you "just stumbled into"--and then remember years later like an inside joke with the universe. read more

It is the quintessential Irish pub located a few hundred yards from the extraordinary beach on Sullivan's Island. Get a perfect pint of Guiness. Spend hours looking at the decor rich with Irish, Boston sports teams, collegiate sports and more. It's even better after a day at the beach or just a day anywhere. It has good craic. The service especially at the bar is friendly and engaging. You can see the staff enter the kitchen through a confessional door from an old church. It is my personal favorite pub in the Charleston area. A little biased from Boston and Dublin. The food is alright with some highlights including the sliders. read more

So we were at the end of our vaca and have always wanted to hit this pub. It did not disappoint! The bar lady was nice, friendly, chill, made good suggestions, good convo and just plain cool! The spot had a chill vibe, we sat by the bar. What threw us over was the GRILLED WINGS!! WOW!! Meaty, hot and delicious! At first, I was all cute and was like I will eat about 2. I went in! I went here and it had a good atmosphere yet when we walked in we were left to our own devices and I had to ask the staff for menus. Then I look at the menu and see $15 for a chicken sandwich and decide to go with that. The sandwich was only worth about $8 I was not impressed. I also chose the side of potato salad and it was about 2 ounces of potato salad. They also don't serve French fries, what kind of pun doesn't have French fries. The waiter visited us once to give us our food. We had to ask for menus and refills on our drinks and the bill. Overall it was a bad experience and waste of money. read more

Both Southerners and the Irish are known for their hospitality so we weren't surprised by the warm welcome we received at Dunleavy's Pub. Owen greeted us, brought a basket of popcorn, and took our orders. We enjoyed local beers and searched for familiar beer cans, police emblems, license plates, and sport memorabilia that decorated the pub while a waited for our food. We were surprised to see our Boston teams well represented. Owen brought our meals quickly and pleasantly. The mahi mahi served on a soft roll was flaky and delicious and the chicken salad on rye was excellent. We chatted with the owner; his family opened the pub over 30 years ago. We wish we could come back to Dunleavy's but we're leaving Charleston tomorrow. Maybe we'll return someday. read more

This is the ultimate dive. Tons of license plates and Boston sports memorabilia. As a New Yorker, I can't say it sat well with me, but so be it. We took seats at the bar and were given a bowl of free popcorn, nice of them to do. For beer, they didn't have a ton of draft options, but I wanted something local and I did get a Park Circle Pale from Commonhouse, which was pretty good. We ordered a bunch of grilled wings, half honey mustard, half medium. they were cooked well, very juicy, I did want the skin a little crispier. Mom is not a big Buffalo wings fan, so I wound up eating about 75 percent of them. With inflation, wings are just getting crazy price was. I think it was about 16 dollars for 12 wings. The clientele was definitely regulars, this is the kind of bar where people probably come several days a week. And damn, they drink hard. There was a group of about 15 at the communal table in the middle and two of the women were so loud and obnoxious, even the bartenders started glaring at them. So if you're looking for a bar to have a quiet conversation with someone, look somewhere else. And remember, cash only! read more

This place is a must for any Notre Dame football fan. The host the Notre Dame Alumni Club of Charleston and the only true Notre Dame football bar I have found in the three years I have lived here. I have stopped in Dunleavy's from time when in Sullivan's. It's your typical Irish pub with a good atmosphere and cold beer. If you are hungry I would definitely recommend the wings. If you like spicy, go with the hotter than hot hot wings. You may need extra blue cheese because these boys are killer. Where the magic really comes out here are when the Irish are on the gridiron. This place is electric! Everyone screaming for the bad cheering for the good. If the Irish score the bar erupts in the Notre Dame fight song. Dunleavy's is one of my favorite spots to eat at on Sullivan's. We use to go here as a family for lunch + dinner ALL THE TIME when I was a kid, and it is still the same fun, friendly bar I remember. The owners are extremely kind and attentive to every customer that walks in the door. It's a great place to grab a cold beer after work or to stop in on the weekends for a bite to eat (and it's also a great place to watch sports if something is on.) I have always been partial to their chili dogs. The size of the dog has changed over the years, but it still tastes as good as it did 20 years ago. You can't go wrong with their wings + burgers either. If you are looking for a laid back place to grab a drink after the beach, this is where you want to go. I'm liking this more and more each visit. You can tell it is a locals bar but it's also a Notre Dame bar and that's what called our names. It's very small so it can get filled up pretty quickly especially if there is a big game on. They have a good selection of food and drinks and the quality is good for an on the verge dive bar. They give you free refillable popcorn baskets so that's awesome if you are just there for a couple drinks. Great location. Street parking nearby can be hit or miss but you're sure to find something in walking distance. Awesome little island Irish pub. read more
