Norfolk view from balcony -- 2/5/22 7:01 pm
    Max H.

We decided to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary (02-02-02 -- 2-2-22) on Kaua'i. Using a variety of online searches for a condo on the South coast, we settled on Poipu Plantation Resort thanks to reviews like this. I don't think we could have made a better choice. We were here 2-1-2022 to 2-08-2022. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by Maddy and Pete (the owner), and informed that we would be staying in "Norfolk" -- a beautiful, 1-br ocean-view unit (instead of "Mango" -- a partial view unit -- which I had booked, and which was directly below). The 23-steps up to the unit were well worth the effort. The view from the balcony is perfect for watching the sunset each day. The unit itself was a delight. Nicely decorated, plenty of windows to allow fresh air to circulate throughout the unit, and very well supplied with tableware, silverware, and glasses (in wine, highball, and old fashioned varieties), cooking utensils, drip coffee maker (plenty of filters) and coffee cups, and, most important of all, SHARP knives by Sabatier (as a mostly-retired caterer, these were a true pleasure!). We stocked up on some fresh NY strip steaks, wild caught marlin and ahi steaks, eggs, salad mix, some veggies, OJ, and soft drinks at Costco after arriving at Lihue and before making the 20-minute drive to Poipu. The full-size refrigerator accommodated it all (Safeway and Big Save markets are much higher priced, but necessary for some small quantities of items you might need). The bedroom dresser and closet (full of wood hangers) held all our folded and hanging clothes with ease. The queen bed was a joy to sleep on each night. The bathroom includes a large shower with handheld adjustable sprayer and body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. The only thing missing was a hair dryer. Large flat-screen LED TV was ROKU connected, but sort of missed being able to watch the news. I grilled our steaks and fish on the Weber BBQ in the gazebo downstairs. As a "base of operations" for visiting all the island has to offer, South shore is ideal, as is Poipu Plantation. The resort is walking distance to Poipu Beach, but we chose to drive. The unit comes complete with deck chairs and beach towels, so no need to bring your own. Early mornings are the best time to go . . . before the crowds arrive around 11am. We found six turtles on the West end of the beach one morning. From the resort, you can get to your choice of Waimea Canyon State Park on the west coast or to Hanalei and Princeville on the North coast in about an hour -- and you definitely need to visit both. There is a farmer's market in Poipu on Wednesday afternoons, and a large farmer's market in Lihue on Saturday mornings. The grounds here are well-manicured. The songbirds love the place -- plenty of plumeria trees (unfortunately mostly dormant this time of year), and although you can find them just about anywhere you go, there aren't any chickens on the property. Owner Pete is a real gentleman! After checking out and driving to Lihue for our 1:30pm return flight to LAX, my wife discovered that she had left some cash in the complimentary safe in the unit. We called the resort and Pete found her cash and it was in my PayPal account before we landed. It doesn't get better than that! With so many other places in the world we haven't seen, we might not get back to Kaua'i, but if we ever do, we will surely come back to Poipu Plantation Resort.

We sat on that lounger every evening:)

We loved the Poipu Plantation Bed & Breakfast. Right off the bat- if you are reading this - stop- go book it NOW! Okay, back to the review...We arrived after 2pm for check in & found our information easy & to our room. The decor is beautifully done & kept. The huge wood furniture pieces are amazing. Our room (Maile) was perfect. We had fresh lillies everywhere. In January, we used the ceiling fan, but there is an AC. The room was nicely sized, a huge wardrobe & vanity area, then a large bathroom. All nicely clean. Internet was free. There is a community table for breakfast @8am. Breakfast was yummy with fresh fruits, eggs, and scones. They varied the menu so it wasn't boring. We loved going to breakfast & chatting with the other folks! Javid is the host & he is the most!! There were always great suggestions of what to do & where to go. He also called to help us book a luau. The grounds are very well maintained & the office has chairs, towels, books to borrow. I will book this room or the Alii room next time. The beach & eateries are all within 5 min or a short drive. We saw sea turtles & a seal even! We snorkeled & it was so easy from this location! I will not go anywhere else! Overall- big big big hearts for these folks :) love!

I'm sympathetic to the stress the coronavirus places on small businesses, but retaining almost $400 of my $718 deposit when I cancelled in anticipation of covid19 travel restrictions seems a touch excessive. Needless to say, I won't consider them again.

Sitting on the expansive lanai, I feel the breeze waft through my hair, ruffling my sarong pleasantly as I gaze out across lush vegetation, cute rooftops and out to the dark blue ocean. I take another sip of kauai coffee and tune in to the ever-present crazy songs of local birds flirting with each other. In the evenings we watch the sunset from our lanai, exchanging coffee for fruity cocktails we make in our kitchen. We talk and listen, both to each other and to the sounds of Kauai. This. Is. Vacation. Poipu Plantation Resort offers a variety of housing options, from B&B rooms to condo rentals with differing prices depending on the view (garden, scenic, ocean) and upon how long you stay here. We booked the least expensive of the condos ($135/night garden view, 5 night stay), but were pleasantly surprised to find upon our arrival, that we'd been upgraded to the fabulous ocean view condo. Damn, this is mighty fine! There are beautiful, exotic flowers and lush, leafy trees all around the well-kept grounds. There is a coin-operated laundry facility ($1 for washing & $1 for drying - cheaper than San Francisco!), which we have used. We are about a 5 minute slow amble from the famed Poipu beaches. As an added bonus, the guys who are at the front desk are exceedingly pleasant and helpful regarding any touristy info you can dream up to ask about. Not only that, but one of the guys helped us out of a major bind on our arrival day when we were having difficulties lining up a rental car. After trying for several days to rent online, we finally learned that every single rental car agency was flat sold out of cars for the day we were arriving to the airport. This Poipu Plantation guy managed to sweet-talk someone at Hertz into getting us a car. Seriously, folks, this is above and beyond the call of duty when the hotel staff picks up the slack from our procrastination! I'm just going to stop myself here, before this review gets out of control. Just know that this is a lovely place to stay. I would absolutely stay here again in a heartbeat. Thanks Toni M. for your review, which directed me to this marvelous place to stay!

We only found out about it when our son slipped on the wet floor and almost fell (it's tile throughout). We notified the management company Parrish Collection. When we followed up, turns out they had called back another number, who told them they were no longer in the unit. Made me think this wasn't the first time they've had this issue. They offered to have someone come during the day to fix it. However, their in-unit safe was open and stuck in the locked position (bolts were out so you couldn't close the safe), and we didn't feel comfortable leaving our valuables unlocked while we were out, so we declined having a technician come during the day. 10A was right up against a golf course. Looked nice through the back sliding glass doors, but we never enjoyed the lanai - too many bugs out there. There were also bugs between the glass door and the screen door, so we couldn't even open up the glass doors. It's about a five minute drive to the beach. Walking would've taken maybe 20 minutes, but we wouldn't have wanted to do that carrying beach gear and all.

They also have elevator access and luggage carts which was helpful for when we received our Instacart order. We enjoyed relaxing on the lanai, listening to the waves and watching for sea turtles, which was saw many! Locals would come to the beach to fish and even that was fun to watch! There's also a ton of roosters and chickens, and the roosters crow all day, not just in the mornings lol! We also saw thousands of rose ringed parakeets flying into the area in the morning and flying out at night! Showers and foot baths were located in the parking lot to rinse off prior to returning from the beach. The staff was friendly, although our interaction with them was minimal. We both rented off AirBnB from completely different people and we both had great experiences. I live in Hawaii. Not on Kauai, but I think what people expect is the beauty, which it is, with the aloha, which it has, and to be pampered, which you can have... but you have to give a little too. There will be chickens and roosters. Bugs exist. Everything is slow on Kauai and like 5x slower than island time on Maui and 10x slower than Oahu. Now, bed bugs and that sort of thing, no, you should not have to deal with that! I read those reviews, and that is unfortunate. This location is massive. Each building has three floors, all walkup. (No elevators) some have AC and some do not. Some have carpet and others are renovated with hardwood throughout. Some have surfboards and body boards, some only have sand toys. Some are a couple of hundred per night and others, over $1K U.S. It depends when and how you book. Read as much as you can. I will make sure to write a review for the unit I stayed in on the AirBnB after reading these reviews. The bed was SO comfortable. I crashed out. My only complaint was the unit I was in did not have creamer for the coffee. A lot is probably due to how a store is located across the street or you can grab some at the onsite cafe... but still. Coffee was available, and no sugar or creamer. It was clean. Tons of towels. The kitchen had everything. Dishwasher. Everything to cook with. Extras. A great spice rack. A little set to accompany a mini bar (no mini bar) but you could mix drinks and cork wine. Extra blankets. A huge lanai. Lots of shampoo and conditioner, lotion, soap. . . 2 parking spaces provided. 4 towels cards for the beach. Free chairs at the beach to use (1st come 1st serve). Cafe on property. Two restaurants at the front of the property at other hotels, but very accessible. Across the street, many food options and a market, very easy walk. The pool and hot tub are further down and across the street, walk or short drive. I would request this spot so seek out Unit 315 in Building 39.
