Norfolk view from balcony -- 2/5/22 7:01 pm
    Max H.

We decided to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary (02-02-02 -- 2-2-22) on Kaua'i. Using a variety of online searches for a condo on the South coast, we settled on Poipu Plantation Resort thanks to reviews like this. I don't think we could have made a better choice. We were here 2-1-2022 to 2-08-2022. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by Maddy and Pete (the owner), and informed that we would be staying in "Norfolk" -- a beautiful, 1-br ocean-view unit (instead of "Mango" -- a partial view unit -- which I had booked, and which was directly below). The 23-steps up to the unit were well worth the effort. The view from the balcony is perfect for watching the sunset each day. The unit itself was a delight. Nicely decorated, plenty of windows to allow fresh air to circulate throughout the unit, and very well supplied with tableware, silverware, and glasses (in wine, highball, and old fashioned varieties), cooking utensils, drip coffee maker (plenty of filters) and coffee cups, and, most important of all, SHARP knives by Sabatier (as a mostly-retired caterer, these were a true pleasure!). We stocked up on some fresh NY strip steaks, wild caught marlin and ahi steaks, eggs, salad mix, some veggies, OJ, and soft drinks at Costco after arriving at Lihue and before making the 20-minute drive to Poipu. The full-size refrigerator accommodated it all (Safeway and Big Save markets are much higher priced, but necessary for some small quantities of items you might need). The bedroom dresser and closet (full of wood hangers) held all our folded and hanging clothes with ease. The queen bed was a joy to sleep on each night. The bathroom includes a large shower with handheld adjustable sprayer and body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. The only thing missing was a hair dryer. Large flat-screen LED TV was ROKU connected, but sort of missed being able to watch the news. I grilled our steaks and fish on the Weber BBQ in the gazebo downstairs. As a "base of operations" for visiting all the island has to offer, South shore is ideal, as is Poipu Plantation. The resort is walking distance to Poipu Beach, but we chose to drive. The unit comes complete with deck chairs and beach towels, so no need to bring your own. Early mornings are the best time to go . . . before the crowds arrive around 11am. We found six turtles on the West end of the beach one morning. From the resort, you can get to your choice of Waimea Canyon State Park on the west coast or to Hanalei and Princeville on the North coast in about an hour -- and you definitely need to visit both. There is a farmer's market in Poipu on Wednesday afternoons, and a large farmer's market in Lihue on Saturday mornings. The grounds here are well-manicured. The songbirds love the place -- plenty of plumeria trees (unfortunately mostly dormant this time of year), and although you can find them just about anywhere you go, there aren't any chickens on the property. Owner Pete is a real gentleman! After checking out and driving to Lihue for our 1:30pm return flight to LAX, my wife discovered that she had left some cash in the complimentary safe in the unit. We called the resort and Pete found her cash and it was in my PayPal account before we landed. It doesn't get better than that! With so many other places in the world we haven't seen, we might not get back to Kaua'i, but if we ever do, we will surely come back to Poipu Plantation Resort.

We sat on that lounger every evening:)

We loved the Poipu Plantation Bed & Breakfast. Right off the bat- if you are reading this - stop- go book it NOW! Okay, back to the review...We arrived after 2pm for check in & found our information easy & to our room. The decor is beautifully done & kept. The huge wood furniture pieces are amazing. Our room (Maile) was perfect. We had fresh lillies everywhere. In January, we used the ceiling fan, but there is an AC. The room was nicely sized, a huge wardrobe & vanity area, then a large bathroom. All nicely clean. Internet was free. There is a community table for breakfast @8am. Breakfast was yummy with fresh fruits, eggs, and scones. They varied the menu so it wasn't boring. We loved going to breakfast & chatting with the other folks! Javid is the host & he is the most!! There were always great suggestions of what to do & where to go. He also called to help us book a luau. The grounds are very well maintained & the office has chairs, towels, books to borrow. I will book this room or the Alii room next time. The beach & eateries are all within 5 min or a short drive. We saw sea turtles & a seal even! We snorkeled & it was so easy from this location! I will not go anywhere else! Overall- big big big hearts for these folks :) love!

I'm sympathetic to the stress the coronavirus places on small businesses, but retaining almost $400 of my $718 deposit when I cancelled in anticipation of covid19 travel restrictions seems a touch excessive. Needless to say, I won't consider them again.

    Top floor: ocean view condo

Sitting on the expansive lanai, I feel the breeze waft through my hair, ruffling my sarong pleasantly as I gaze out across lush vegetation, cute rooftops and out to the dark blue ocean. I take another sip of kauai coffee and tune in to the ever-present crazy songs of local birds flirting with each other. In the evenings we watch the sunset from our lanai, exchanging coffee for fruity cocktails we make in our kitchen. We talk and listen, both to each other and to the sounds of Kauai. This. Is. Vacation. Poipu Plantation Resort offers a variety of housing options, from B&B rooms to condo rentals with differing prices depending on the view (garden, scenic, ocean) and upon how long you stay here. We booked the least expensive of the condos ($135/night garden view, 5 night stay), but were pleasantly surprised to find upon our arrival, that we'd been upgraded to the fabulous ocean view condo. Damn, this is mighty fine! There are beautiful, exotic flowers and lush, leafy trees all around the well-kept grounds. There is a coin-operated laundry facility ($1 for washing & $1 for drying - cheaper than San Francisco!), which we have used. We are about a 5 minute slow amble from the famed Poipu beaches. As an added bonus, the guys who are at the front desk are exceedingly pleasant and helpful regarding any touristy info you can dream up to ask about. Not only that, but one of the guys helped us out of a major bind on our arrival day when we were having difficulties lining up a rental car. After trying for several days to rent online, we finally learned that every single rental car agency was flat sold out of cars for the day we were arriving to the airport. This Poipu Plantation guy managed to sweet-talk someone at Hertz into getting us a car. Seriously, folks, this is above and beyond the call of duty when the hotel staff picks up the slack from our procrastination! I'm just going to stop myself here, before this review gets out of control. Just know that this is a lovely place to stay. I would absolutely stay here again in a heartbeat. Thanks Toni M. for your review, which directed me to this marvelous place to stay!

Great place to relax!…read more So I am terrible at traveling. I am an anxious traveler, so I get my hubby to do all the planning. I just pack our bags and show up for the flight. He tries to give me updates during the planning process, but I trust his judgement. This year we used AirBnB to book this lovely studio. We love Kauai and it's our first time staying in the sunny South. We've stayed in the North, but most of the things we want to do and see are in the South... Salt Pond (RIP Uncle Louie), Hanapepe Art Walk, Poipu Beach for night photos. Poipu Beach Surfsong is in a great neighbourhood. Of course we rented a car because you need one to get around here, but there are so many things within walking distance. We walked along the road to the Beach House Restaurant. We walked up the street to Kukui'ula Shopping Centre a couple times, once for the Culinary Market--- a must see. If you need to sprawl out on a beach, Baby Beach is just across the street. My hubby who loves to walk would have made many more things "within walking distance", but I was satisfied with what was around... I wasn't going to walk to Poipu Shopping Centre. I am on holidays. The studio suite itself was just the right size for the two of us. There was a futon-y thing in front of the window, but that just held whatever we threw on it... our clothes, souvenirs. I sleep like the dead so I can't really say how comfy the bed was... it was comfy enough for me. There are fans and lots of cross ventilation because of the windows on both sides. There is an eating area outside and a table and stools inside. There's a coffee maker, and a fridge to hold my ice cream. From the pictures, we thought there was a microwave, but we didn't see one. We only ate breakfast in our room. Otherwise we ate out or got ready made food... there are glasses, plates and cutlery. I thought the shower water pressure was really weird until I actually turned on the shower properly. You don't know how dumb you are until you try to turn on someone else's shower. There is also a shower outside for rinsing all the sand off. One of the people staying upstairs said he comes back every year to the same suite. It's not new or fancy. It could do with some renovations, but that would ruin the vibe of it. It would be great to rent the whole house and have a get-together there... there's an area in the back behind the laundry room--- I only poked my head in. I would definitely come back. When we arrived, there was a box of chocolates and local bananas for us. Yum!

The restaurant on-site, Red Salt, has delicious (but pricey) brunch and dinner. The pool bar is convenient (but also pricey). Our room was spacious and comfortable, with a very nice bathroom and a huge television. There was a free bottle of white wine in the fridge when we checked in. The room keys in the form of waterproof wristbands are a nice touch. It was mostly adults staying here and very few families with children, which is what we wanted for our mini-moon. Cons: The parking is Valet only. The pool is relatively small. The chairs around it fill up fast when it's busy. If a pool chair opens up, you can't get your own fresh towels/chair cover and have to wait for someone to come through with a cart to swap them out. You can't access the beach directly from the resort; on a map it looks like you can access Kiahuna beach, but you actually have to climb down from the boardwalk onto it (I did not want to do this and walked to Poipu Beach instead). The food is expensive and the "happy hour" drinks are $19. Overall, it was a relaxing stay in a beautiful location!

This is not your traditional B&B in that you are served breakfast in the morning around a huge table with a local host. Perhaps better--this place is literally a one-bedroom apartment. No formal breakfast in the morning, but... 2. With a kitchenette (i.e., no stove or oven), you can literally make whatever you want for breakfast (just not fried eggs--don't do what we did & buy a dozen eggs from the store, ya can't cook em). But wish a full size fridge, a microwave, and a toaster oven, you can get pretty creative & make one helluva meal before you head out. 3. This is on the "quiter" part of the island, the south side. That said, we did find some great nearby food options: Kalaheo Cafe & Coffee for breakfast AND lunch, then Bobbi's for bbq pulled pork platters/sandwiches. Those places will *not* let you down. 4. The place can be tricky to find, especially at night since it's tucked up away into the hills a bit, without much, if any, street lights. Do your best to try to find it the first time in the daylight. 5. Yes, the hiking trails nearby may require an SUV to drive up them, but not this place; your regular car is fine. Just make sure the headlights work. 6. I'm not sure there's any a/c here, though opening the windows at night cooled the place off just fine for us. Beware of the roosters in the morning though; those bad boys wake up around 5am, and if your windows are open, you'll be awake too. We just shut the windows at that point, no big deal. 7. Any beach gear you could need is here; umbrella, 2 beach chairs, tons of beach blankets, a cooler, and 2 boogie boards. Super, super helpful. 8. And last but *definitely* not least: A full size washer & dryer. Literally the life-saver of the trip. 9. Runner-up life-saver: the hiking book tucked away on their bookshelf. Updated in 2014, so a newer edition, and another *huge* help. We didn't leave the apartment without it.
