Making your own bowl is definitely the way to go - a medium is usually enough for me to split into two meals. With a medium bowl, you get 3 scoops of protein, and all of the toppings you want (avocado + mango cost extra). My favorite toppings are the seaweed salad, kale, and corn, and it's really nice that they take everything and mix it up for you. I still recommend shaking the bowl after you've capped it (much like chipotle) so it makes the rice or greens much more flavorful. Poké Bar is super close to where I live and convenient for quick off-campus meals, and I think it's unlikely that I'll be postmating from #Poki or Simply Bowl anymore. read more

The service is super great, I just want to say that first-off. They are super friendly and give you more of something if you don't want something else. When I left the server said see you next time! Literally the first time I've heard that in a restaurant in Berkeley in my three years here. The three stars is mostly because the crab they serve isn't the usual crab mixture that I like :( The fish is super fresh and I like that you can mix and match. Overpriced - I only got very small portion for the medium sized make-your-own-bowl I ordered. It only filled half the box. It is about half the size as the ones that I got from other poke places. Very unfriendly staff - the staff was robotic and specially asked me to choose a tip amount with offering no meal service and a you-owe-me-money face. It is a self-serve place that you don't need to give tips. I normally gave 20% tip at typical dinner places with a friendly wait staff so I chose the 15% somewhat unconsciously. I hated myself for doing that. Food is decent. Hence the two stars. I don't think I will ever go back - that's all I can think about when I was dining there. The place is cute, small and located in an alley way. The stairs leading up to it is on Telegraph and the handicap entrance is on the Bancroft side. They provide a very convenient way of ordering by putting up a stack of order forms at the door. You can simply pick one up, fill it out, give it to the server and wait for your order to be called. It was fast and the service was good. They also have provide lids and to-go bags on the side so you don't have to walk up to the counter and ask for them. However, the reason why I gave this place a 3 star was because my order, which was a small with white rice and all albacore, came frozen. Of course, every poke Place chills its fish to keep them fresh, I completely get that. But my order consisted a bed of frozen, cold albacore on top of hot, white rice... And as you can imagine, it was quite unpleasant. Perhaps it was just that day that they didn't fully prep/defrost the albacore since my boyfriend's order with tuna was completely fine. I hate leaving negative reviews but this is in an effort to give true feedback for this place to improve. I've been to the Poke Bar in LA and it is some of the worst poke in the city. Bad quality fish and ingredients were all just of poor quality. After moving to Berkeley I decided to give this place a taste. While it is better than the LA location, this is for sure some of the least impressive poke I've had. Simply put, it's just bad quality. The fish the really chewy and no doubt it's frozen. Albacore was not edible. The imitation crab side was warm and smelled weird. There are plenty of other poke places in the Berkeley area as of now. My favorite is Hashtag Poké, which requires you to take the 6 down Telegraph. For those unfamiliar with the area, this place is located inside a sort of mini mall. There is a (pay) parking structure directly across. The owner is super nice and the place has a positive vibe. The line moves fast and there are tons of toppings to choose from, including crab salad (free) and my personal favorite - pineapple!! Proteins include the usual plus scallops (nice!) There is inside seating plus a little tabletop where you can find utensils, water and to go tops for your containers. Portions are generous. The fish seems fresh, the ingredients bright. The amount of fish is generous and their toppings are numerous, including pineapple and kale. The crab salad isn't what I usually expect (seems like it's just the imitation crab without any sauces/seasoning), but it didn't bother me too much. The service here is also great. They're patient if you're indecisive and the owner is really friendly, asking us if we tried the fried garlic on it (which we didn't see and loved having). Very convenient location in comparison to Berkeley campus, and a decent place at that. The quality of the fish is pretty good, and they have a lot of options in terms sauces and add-ons. What's nice about this place is that they allow mixing of sauces and bases (so half rice half salad is ok). They also have a nice option in that you can fill out a form first with all your choices for your bowl while your in line, so it's much more efficient and the line goes by quickly even if the line is super long. So I search on Yelp and find to my delight this place, which is rated high with four stars. My portion size was small, my avocado on the side wasn't even ripe, and the worst of it all was I don't even think my sashimi was fresh. The fish tasted slimy and lukewarm as if it was sitting in its tray for than a few days. I can recall that I suspected that the stomach ache I had afterwards was from this place. However, I will say that I was happy with costumer service. They had a positive attitude and helped me order. But overall, I wish I could tell myself that this is a poke spot in Berkeley I could look forward to again, but, until this day, I think to myself, I should've just walked some more to find another place. read more

I don't normally like poke but I found myself craving a bowl from here after my first time trying it with a friend. I usually am not a fan of just fish outside of a sushi roll and get kinda grossed out after eating a lot of fish at other poke places, but I really enjoyed the protein at this place. Also the owner of this restaurant is the sweetest guy!! he made conversation and smiled at everyone and made sure to wave at everyone leaving and invite them to come back. And the workers were really nice too and gave me their suggestions on what to get since I don't usually eat much poke. I just went to Poke Bar for lunch, and I gotta say, I was impressed. I've been to most of the poke places within a few blocks of campus, and this is definitely in the running for being the best alongside Simply Bowl. I made my own small bowl with brown rice, seaweed salad and imitation crab (all included), and two scoops of salmon. The man making my bowl was SUPER generous with his scoops, which was much appreciated. I also added most of the toppings and asked for ponzu and original sauce. I will say that they oversauced my bowl a bit, and that's coming from a self proclaimed salt enthusiast. Next time I'll either ask for both sauces but tell the worker to go easy, or just get one sauce. The fish seemed fresh and the sauces had good flavor. Even though I got the small, it's a very reasonable size and it's totally enough for me for lunch (comparable in size to simply bowl). I'm for sure going to be back at this place for lunch soon, as long as their prices/portion sizes stay the same! read more
