The rolls are on the smaller side but they were packed tightly and held together well. The fish has a clean flavor and the avocado was just as fresh. Located in the Alewife Brook Parkway Shopping Center, Genki Ya is clean and well maintained. One thing we really appreciated even for our quick stop was that the restaurant didn't have any lingering food smells. Not once, not twice, but three times now I've ordered take out and they've messed up my order. They aren't very receptive to when they mess up either. The fish isn't as fresh, the rolls are kind of messy and small, and the charging for condiments is a joke. If I'm spending $100, surely you can oblige. It's not like I'm asking for Saffron. A new lady works there and is incredibly rude and unclear. Not a good addition and very bad energy. They need to make alterations and perhaps a revamping of the place. It may not be the best sushi I've ever had but they come through when I need to fill a craving! They definitely have some highlights on their menu, and delivery has been reliable for me in the past few months. HOWEVER. A couple weeks ago I had the unfortunate experience of finding a wee six-legged friend in our food. My partner bit into his sushi only to find a very healthy fly fall out - and thank goodness it did, otherwise it would have added some unwanted protein to the meal. Sadly it ruined my birthday meal - and after writing a couple emails to the establishment I haven't heard back which is pretty disappointing. Came in on Valentine's night and gee was this place busy. Delivery orders leaving as well. Ordered a series of rolls. 2 of the 4 were supposed to be spicy and they weren't spicy at all. I don't eat sushi very often but was kinda disappointed in the lack of spice. Service was good considering how packed they were. There was soup with tofu and the tofu was good. The best part of Genki Ya, in my opinion, are their catered platters! I ordered one today at the recommendation of a friend for a small graduation gathering I was having and it was a huge hit! I got the Makimono Platter for 12 people which included 2 eel-avocado rolls, 2 California rolls, 2 crazy rolls, 2 spicy tuna rolls, 2 spicy salmon rolls, yellowtail roll, rainbow roll, sunset roll, salmon roll, and a tuna roll, all for $110. It was roughly 8-10 pieces per person. I then got a few orders of seaweed salad and I was all set. They included utensils, napkins & soy sauce. I barely had to do anything and everyone loved it! They have 5 platters to choose from including a vegetarian option. They are now my go-to for sushi party platters! read more

Wow. Just wow! Genki Ya is dope. The menu is kind of overwhelming since it's so long, but it's okay because they have detailed pictures of all their rolls. Very helpful! Also, you can add or subtract pretty much any ingredient from any roll, which is likely convenient for many. At first glance, the quality of Genki Ya may seem too questionable to bother due to its location in a strip mall by a busy Cambridge parkway. That, or you may mistake it for a Q'Doba seeing as their restaurant sign shares an eery resemblance with the cheap faux Mexican chain. However, I urge you to give it a try. Each roll (even the classic staples) comes with 8 generously sized pieces rather than 6, which makes up for the extra buck or 2 per order. About 85% of their rolls are overwhelmingly decadent, because almost all include tempura flakes and/or a combination of at least 3 dank features. For two girls who can usually take down a healthy portion of sush, my sister and I struggled to finish our 4th roll. We got the Alligator, Salmon Torch, Spicy White Tuna, and the Genki Ichiban special which was all sorts of bomb = spicy tuna and tobiko on top of fried seaweed and rice. It came in 4 long logs, which was something I'd never seen before. Awesome! My only complaint is the acoustics of the rectangular dining room. Loud voices are impossible to ignore. Oh well, I'll definitely be returning, and probably for the $13 3-roll lunch special. It's like they're giving the sushi away! read more

Despite my seafood and fish allergies, I've been able to enjoy some quality sushi at Genki Ya. Whether it was delivered, or picked up, or even enjoyed on the spot, their creative and varied menu is suited for all kinds of folks, even ones with dietary restrictions such as myself. I've been able to nosh on their rolls and while you'd think that my selection would be limited, it is in fact not at all. Whether I get the ABC roll (avocado, banana and cream cheese), the AAC roll (avocado, asparagus, cream cheese), the a simple avocado roll, it's all delicious. And the banana in the ABC roll is actually pretty awesome. But there's more, don't forget the sweet potato roll, which is absolutely marvelous; the sweet potato is fried to perfection and is both crispy and soft: it's amazing. But wait, there's more? Yes, that's right, there's more maki rolls for me to enjoy. I forgot to mention the garden roll (avocado, cucumber, carrots and greens) and hell, there's even the fruit roll (mango, banana and avocado). I'm guessing you see a theme here - variety is there. Throughout the menu. Furthermore, you can also get some delicious gyoza, edamame and various other Japanese apps and dishes. It's all fresh, it's all delicious and it's all affordable. They have all kinds of specials available for their patrons, including the 2 ($10) or 3 (13) rolls specials (cash only) which is ridiculously affordable. Oh and did I mention that if you are lazy you can place your order online and have it delivered? It pick it up and avoid having to wait? All and all this is a great spot in an area that lacks quick, affordable and convenient places to eat. Sure there's a Chipotle next to it, but this is much better. For a place that offers up super large cuts of fresh sushi and delicious maki rolls, you'd think they might take a hint from somebody about how to light a restaurant! They also off warm Sake which was a nice addition to our dining experience. We ordered yellowtail, salmon and unagi sushi and shrimp tempura maki roll. All were plated up and presented nicely at the table. As I stated the pieces of sushi were some of the largest cuts I've ever experienced. Each one could be cut into 3 bite sized pieces for easier eating - especially when on a date. You DON'T want to look sloppy when eating sushi. I gave the food 4 stars. But people... Please hire an interior lighting design person and add some new more appealing lights so we don't burn out our retinas!!! read more

Used to be a 4, now a 1. I've been pretty happy with Genki Ya until the past week. Their sushi tends to be well prepared, their lunch deals are a bargain, and their service is friendly (by Boston standards). My most recent (and last) meal with them, wasn't so good: They hadn't cleaned the shrimp properly and there was still feces in the shrimp's 'sand vein'. It was a tempura roll, so it wasn't dangerous, but it was also obvious and could have been easily removed before or after cooking and cutting. I can't trust a Sushi restaurant that leaves poop in their shrimp/ebi. I've emailed Genki Ya at the Cambridge and company-wide email addresses about the issue but they haven't bothered to respond. read more

Tuna Kimchi appetizer is excellent if you like kimchi and is plated nicely. The organic salad is a really good size (enough for 2 to share) and comes with avocado slices. Food/Value: 5 Stars Service: 4 Stars This is my go-to sushi spot in Boston/Cambridge. They have three locations in the area which makes it super convenient and I've actually been to all three. Believe it or not, the quality of each of the locations is about the same. What I like most about Genki Ya are their rolls. They are absolutely delicious, well made with a decent ratio of filling to rice. Seaweed is fresh. Everything just gives a very clean feeling when I look at the plating to the construction of rolls that are really geometrically prepared unlike places which just put together the rolls as fast as they can. Value is also key. As Damien has mentioned, this place is great for the quality and amount of sushi they give you! If you want someplace you can go to for all your sushi needs on a regular basis, Genki Ya won't break the bank.
