Such a yummy poke spot right inside the MSU campus! Fresh ingredients, quick and easy service, and lots of options for toppings! They also have some protein options that other poke spots don't usually have, like shrimp tempura. So good!

The team members we encountered were welcoming and friendly. We were seated right away as during the summer with the college students scarce, getting seated right away isn't abnormal. The restaurant was quiet so we selected a seat next to the window; the foot and vehicle traffic on Grand River was a nice backdrop. We started with shrimp shumai and the tempura appetizer, then decided on the sushi combo b and avocado don for our mains. The shrimp shumai were dainty but tasty! However, the tempura veggies weren't really flavorful and I'm not sure what the sauce served with them was intended to offer but minimal flavor was found there as well. The avocado don was like a deconstructed sushi roll and was absolutely delightful, although the dish would have benefited from the avocado being more ripe; it was flavorful and plentiful! The sushi combo was also delicious and fresh, served with plenty of wasabi and ginger. Speaking of ginger the ginger dressing on the side salad was so crisp, fresh and tangy it was definitely one of the highlights. I think the avocado don may end up being a lunchtime staple for me!

Their fish is always fresh and served in super generous portions. Rice is always perfectly seasoned, and rolled are always put together well. Their rice dishes also always hit and you'll never ever leave the store not filled to the brim. Take my repeated business as a sign that this place is absolutely goated.

The crab rangoon dip was creamy and a fun take on the classic app. The seaweed salad was fresh and rounded out the meal well. I also go the Genmaicha tea, which was great! I'm absolutely flabbergasted that I have to spend the rest of memorial weekend with food poisoning, especially after spending $60+ tip for a lunch with myself and my two toddlers. While it seems that cleanliness is not a top priority, I should have walked out when the high chair they brought my two year old was filthy. How hard is it to clean a high chair? If the front of the house is dirty, it makes one wonder what the back of the house looks like. And now I'm especially curious after being sick all night. The odd thing is, they were not busy and they were not short staffed. The culprit was either the papa crema roll or the crab Rangoon dip. My bet it was the dip because it just tasted off. You could definitely tell that the Rangoon chips were not made fresh that day. Not only did they taste funny but they were also stale. However, it could have been a handful of things. Take a look at the most recent health inspections and there are some huge red flags; ones that come at no surprise given the way I have felt for the last 18 hours. Do yourself a favor and don't eat at Maru. They don't even have a three compartment sink. How in the heck are they cleaning ANYTHING properly?

Our waitress seemed really unsure of herself. We wondered if she may have been new, which is fine, but she just seemed like she wasn't confident or fully present. We had two appetizers; the Rangoon purses, I think they were called; which were nothing extraordinary. We also had the Calamari. It was HUGE. I've never seen such big pieces, they looked like onion rings. The presentation was so bland. No color, no sauces. I know there were sauce options on the table, but I was surprised given that the serving dishes had a spot for sauce, that they couldn't have whipped up something unique for the apps. My friends got the Hibachi and were underwhelmed; they didn't love the miso soup or salads, either. I had ordered the Tiger sushi roll and some Nigiri, which the menu just refers to as "sushi", which was weird. I would say the sushi was a step above Meijer sushi, honestly. Pretty chewy, very basic presentation. Nigiri was okay. No real desire to go back when there are better options.

Service was outstanding from our waitress--the food did take a long time but it came out good…read more(though some of the appetizers were not that good [cold, messy plating, tough]) but you're here for the sashimi, nigiri, and rolls + the AYCE!!
