I have always known Maru to be either a hit or a miss, but I must say yesterday's visit will be my last. I'm absolutely flabbergasted that I have to spend the rest of memorial weekend with food poisoning, especially after spending $60+ tip for a lunch with myself and my two toddlers. While it seems that cleanliness is not a top priority, I should have walked out when the high chair they brought my two year old was filthy. How hard is it to clean a high chair? If the front of the house is dirty, it makes one wonder what the back of the house looks like. And now I'm especially curious after being sick all night. The odd thing is, they were not busy and they were not short staffed. The culprit was either the papa crema roll or the crab Rangoon dip. My bet it was the dip because it just tasted off. You could definitely tell that the Rangoon chips were not made fresh that day. Not only did they taste funny but they were also stale. However, it could have been a handful of things. Take a look at the most recent health inspections and there are some huge red flags; ones that come at no surprise given the way I have felt for the last 18 hours. MSU Graduation weekend started with Maru Sushi & Grill! After driving from Illinois we were hungry so we decided to come here. We were seated immediately and place was already packed as I saw some new grads already celebrating! For appetizers we got Crunchy Firecracker Shrimp, crab rangoon dip, and for lunch I got the Veggie Udon Soup. The firecracker shrimp was crisp and had a little spice to it. It came out quickly and was still hot which was good! The Veggie Udon soup was hot which was great cause I was a little cold. The broth was seasoned nicely and did not have too much salt. The veggies were cooked just right. I tried the sweet potato roll and it was just like your normal roll - nothing stood out but it was good! The rest of the family enjoyed their food but they did not enjoy the Bulgogi, my one son said, "I should have known better to get a Korean dish at a Japanese Restaurant. The meat was over cooked and the taste was so-so. The place was lively with all the post or pre graduation lunches! I was extremely happy to return to Maru. Since I live in another area of the state, it is sometimes difficult to return here on a frequent basis. The meal was long overdue. I like the aesthetics with comfortable booths and modern touches. It's small but it feels like you have your own space. The service is consistently top tier on every level. The appetizers and sushi rolls are giant, fresh and flavorful. We were there on crouching tiger Tuesday and the roll is priced at a very reasonable twelve dollars. We had the usuals as well because you cannot go wrong with the crab Rangoon dip and the gyoza. We tried the new kimchi arancini and it is hard to put into words. It will take a lot of adjectives such as amazing,, delicious, creative, somewhat spicy and also has "umami"! In other words, fabulous! The other new dish we tried here was the chicken Katsu and this is a winner in every way! They included house made curry, rice, cabbage and daikon. Walked in about 5:30 on a Thursday and the hostess asked if I had reservations. I looked around and the majority of the tables were empty. I replied "no", she seated us immediately. I was wondering why, but after about an hour, the place was packed. Looking at the staff, I was a bit concerned... "Where da Asian people at?" Also thought the same thing when people started to come in, "Where the Asian people at?" Finally saw 2 asians come in - separate party. Still a bit concerned. Had the following: *Honey Garlic Shrimp - If they could get the tempura batter to come out lacy it would have been perfect. The shrimp and green beans weren't overcooked at all. The green beans snapped. There's cauliflower in it but I would rather have more green beans. I had the sweet sauce on the side. Rather dip and it staying crispy. The sauce was good. *Maguro nigiri - The quality was much better than I expected. There wasn't wasabi under the fish. It was topped with slivered shiso which I liked. *Miss Saigon - It was ok. Would I order it again, probably not. *Super Mario - This was REALLY tasty!! I requested the sauce to be on the side. I tasted it and wasn't a fan. It has a spring mix salad on the side. This dish and a bowl of miso soup for lunch would be perfect. *Cosmo - Again, I had the sauce on the side. Glad I did. I wasn't fan of the sauce. This roll reminded me kind of a dragon roll. Ok, first of all, Ashley, GREAT service. Very kind and sweet. My partner and I made a reservation for 5:45pm on a Saturday night and were seated right away. We ordered our usuals, crouching tiger and sexy bacon. We wanted a third roll so we asked Ashley if there were any specials. We decided on the K-Pop roll because Ashley recommended it and. oh. my. goodness. Excellent recommendation. It was phenomenal. I would argue it was better than my crouching tiger roll, and that's saying something. We finished the night with the pumpkin creme brûlée, which was topped with pecans and cranberries. This was actually the second sushi place I stopped at, as my first choice had too long of a wait to be seated... but I was not disappointed! I started off with the house salad, followed by a Madagascar roll. The house salad was a generous portion with a yummy ginger dressing on the side. I didn't even finish the salad, so I could save room for my specialty roll. The Madagascar roll is listed as "spicy" on the menu, and they are not kidding! It was so spicy but so good! If you enjoy spicy food, you would definitely enjoy this roll. However, it was so hot that I had drank all my water and the server did not refill the empty glass until I had asked him to (as my mouth was on fire haha). The server also never checked back on me, which is the only reason I'm not giving 5 stars. I would definitely come back, though, as the menu had an extensive list of specialty sushi rolls that I would like to try... it was hard to choose just one! I was told to pick up the carry out order in 30 minutes. I arrived and waited an extra 20 for our food. Don't mind waiting a bit extra, but the server seemed distracted and annoyed when asked how much longer I'd have to wait in addition to the 50 minutes that had passed.
