Venison and Black Bean Chili
Lauren T.

Restaurant at the Northland hotel with a ton of seating and a huge bar! The staff were very friendly and the service was quick. The pricing was very average for the food menu and the wine/beer/alcohol list. The food was good but nothing to write home about. I ordered the chicken club and there was barely any chicken on it. The Venison chili, however, was very good. Probably wouldn't go again but not a bad spot if you're staying at the hotel.

I like this place! I'm not from Green Bay, WI, but I'm glad this restaurant was inside my hotel. Poke the Bear is on the first floor of the Northland Hotel. What a pleasant surprise. Usually, I'm a bit skeptical with hotel restaurants, but this was a great try. Let's jump right into this review. What did I have - well, I went here twice on two different days... Day 1 Steak Frites $25 - hangar steak served with garlic green beans, fingerling mashed potatoes, and a side salad - cooked to my preferred temperature! The garlic green beans were delicious, and the fingerling mashed potatoes were just as good. The side salad was a nice extra , mixed greens, cucumber, and baby tomatoes. I would definitely get the steak frites again. Day 2 Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich w/ Fries $14 - the french fries were amazing, whatever seasoning they sprinkled on them fries was hittin'. I was not impressed with the Nashville Chicken Sandwich, here's why - it was hot, super hot and I like spicy, but I was not able to enjoy the sandwich due to the heat level (this could be a taste bud preference), so, if you heat, try it. Also, the chicken patty was awkwardly large, don't come for me, Yelpers, but the size of this chicken patty just gave me pumped up antibiotics vibes (smile!). Pros 1. Excellent customer service. Everyone was nice, from the host(s) - to the waiter (s) - to bar staff. Poke the Bear was truly a pleasure to dine at. On Day 1, I was at the bar, and colleagues joined me, and they accommodated us with a table of 6, small wait, but worth the wait to dine with colleagues collectively. 2. Overall, food was good, prices were reasonable, and portion sizes were generous. 3. The restaurant was clean. 4. My techy self definitely likes the electronic menus on tablets. Very cool. Not only is it efficient, but they are easier to keep clean. *Big pet peeve of mine is restaurants with menus that have the last few meals on the pages * 5. Nice bar area with TVs. Cons 1. Menu is limiting. There are not many options, but there is variety. It's not totally a con, but it's worth mentioning. I hope to visit Green Bay, WI again in the future and dine at the Poke the Bear. I'm posting pictures of my colleagues' food that looked delicious! Everyone enjoyed their meal. I only reviewed my food in this post.

We ate the Short Rib & the Flank Steak both were delicious. Service was fast & ambiance was great.

Brandy Old Fashion Sweet drinks!

Yes! If you stay at the hotel, this place does not disappoint! Great food, servers, and bartenders!

Good spot attached to the beautiful Hotel Northland. Stopped in for a quick bite. The deviled eggs were good but there was a strange spice(?). We couldn't figure it out. Cheese curds we're salty and yummy.

I haven't been here since shortly after they opened. I remember it having a fresh menu and attentive staff. Well, not so much any more. Stopped by for lunch and waited at the hostess stand for about 4 minutes before someone said hello and they'd be over. While standing there I noticed the chalk written beer menu behind the bar was kept up-to-date by simply crossing off the options that were out of stock. To me this sort of thing seems lazy and should have tipped me off. We received our drinks shortly after ordering them (pro). The menu was pretty boring... Caesar salad, cheese curds, steak with fries and these flat breads that did not even look enticing on the tablet menu. After ordering, we waited and waited and waited for our meals. Eventually the waiter delivered my clam chowder which was good as it was not thick and goopy but had good chunks of potato and carrots. While there may or may not have been clams in the chowder it was served with some great homemade style crackers. Once the soup dishes were placed on the table, despite being empty, they never left. Again we had to wait and wait for the rest of our meals. I had ordered the Caesar salad with chicken - the chicken was cooked well and was a good size but there wasn't much of a salad and 3 silly cherry tomatoes. My companions each ordered cheeseburgers that were dry, slider sized (please note the bun to burger ratio) definitely not warm, and served with cold fries. We saw the waiter one last time but only after I flagged him down to order another watery drink. Thankfully there was a waitress around (who, unfortunately said a couple times that they were new) but at least she brought ketchup & our check after we had waited and waited for those. Like the soup dishes, our empty glasses were never cleared. Trust me, customers do not enjoy their experience if they are made to sit amongst dirty dishes! I should have read the reviews could have saved us all some time and money.

I stopped here for a drink because it's in the Hotel Northland just for the experience because I was staying at the hotel. The place is a sports bar that served food and is nice looking for a sports bar, a fancy sports bar. They have nice booths, tables and bar with plenty of TVs. About 16 taps were at the padded bar with nice hi chairs. The woman bartender had a hard time making my Gin Rickey because she walked away a couple times while making it, I think they had no lime juice because she eventually came back with a fresh lime and hand squeezed it into my cocktail. The woman bartender didn't go out of her way to talk to anyone even though the place was mostly empty, I like a bartender who goes around talking to people.

Pastrami poutine. Is THIS a cheese curd?

We checked into hotel where this place is on the ground floor. I called, 3X, got recording that phone had tech difficulties. No big, I go down to order takeout to bring up to room. Very nice bartender answers my menu questions, and I ask about a beer while I wait. He lets me sample what he thinks is a good local IPA-ish beer, I didnt, he gave me sample of a different one and it was great. Nice guy, pleasant bar experience. I ordered "pastrami poutine" (french fries with fried cheese curds and brown gravy...a northern classic I wanted to try up here) and wife had Caesar salad with grilled chicken breast. We were both famished. She liked her salad, even tho it was on dry side, and I liked my poutine. BUT....my dish looked nothing like what is pictured on their website menu: there may have been 2 tablespoons of very finely chopped pastrami, the "fried cheese curds" were nothing more than melted chunks of regular cheese, not breaded, not deep-fried, just plain old cheddar that had been microwaved to partial melting, and there were no sliced green onions on top. It really wasnt a bad meal for a hotel bar but I hate being deceived by descriptions and pictures.

Chopped salad, dressing on the side. It was delish!

It's the lore. The quintessential hotel bar. The class. The dark wood. The lockers. The cheese curds. Plus, they poke the Chicago Bears!

It attracts a similar crowd like Stir Ups and Kittners, bros and annoying 21 year old girls. The bar is loud and with dumb pop music, and is filled with bouncers/security. On evening during the week it can be a pretty chill place. They do have a wide selection of martinis, and several craft beers on tap. I event played Trivia there on a Wednesday night and it was a lot of fun. When it's Mr. Hyde, it's a Saturday morning during the Farmers Market is going on. They open up early with a bloody mary bar. It's $10, but it comes with your bloody mary and a FULL PINT of beer. All the fixings you can add are from vendors of the Market. A great example of a local business supporting other businesses. In the far back they have beer garden with another bar and a bunch of tables. It's a great way to soak in the hot sun with a cold beverage on a summer morning.

Oh Kittners. How…read morehave I not learned to avoid this place when I come back to GB? If you grew up in the area, this is the place you come to go creep on everyone you haven't seen since high school. At least a handful of people here always look like they (still?) watch Jersey Shore marathons. It is the capitol of people trying too hard. They have a few pool tables [that always have a wait], decently priced beers, and an adequate amount of space, earning Kittners a 2 in my book. As much of a kitthole as this is, I'll probably be back. Unfortunately.

Once a troubled bar, now a college students paradise…read more In it's past, Kittner's did have problems with fights, belligerent drunks, and somewhat clueless bartenders. All of that is in Kittner's past and it has reinvented itself to please the masses. The most noticeable difference is the crowd that has made kittner's its new home. It is officially the perfect college student watering hole. The enviornemnt has changed significantly. If someone is too drunk, they get the boot. If there is a fight, all those involved are removed but the party keeps on going! However, I am a regular at kittners and I have only seen one fight and it was handled smoothly and effeciently so that the rest of the guests were almost clueless that it was even going on. Students can come here and feel safe and ready to let loose. Another round of beer please! The drinks are fair priced, but tip the bartenders well and you will be pleasantly surprised with extra alcohol in your glass or a free shot here or there. In reference to other reviews , of course the bartenders are good-looking. How on earth are they supposed to make money? But they are well-versed in bartending skills and can make anything you ask them. If they don't know off the top of their head, they just ask! We can't expect them to know everything right? Let's give the bartenders a round of applause. They work had, give you fair drinks, and look darn good doing it. My one complaint of Kittners is that it does not have a dance floor. . They play excellent music ( which may or not be the same playlist everytime I've been there....but hey I'm not complaining) that makes my friends and I want to get up and dance, but, er, where? There is a lot of awkward dancing and swaying near the bar, by tables, and most often just in the middle of the walking path. Despite the lack of a dancing oulet for those who love to express themselves after a drink or two or ten, Kittner's delivers in just about every way. That being said, this bar isn't for everyone. There is not a single bar around the world that could please everyone, but Kittner's sure does try! And for that, I will keep going back. Pros: Good drinks (fair priced), friendly bartenders, great enviornment, fun music Cons: No dance floor. sorry dancing queens.
