The service is very fast so I'd recommend knowing what meats you want with how much rice. The ambiance is "get in and get out" with no frills. This isn't a tourist location so expect lots of locals. Holy smokes this place had the freshest poke I had on my trip. The person helping us was so nice. Obviously she knew we were tourists the moment we stepped in, so she explained the menu and all of their sauces to us: the poke comes with either ahi or garlic shrimp or a mix of both. We opted for the mix. Then you take their tray of sauces and condiments and put the sauces onto your poke--- to your taste. The garlic shrimp, amazing. The ahi was fresh and so so good with the sauces they provided. We also grabbed a few of the $1 spam musubi. Everything was really tasty and extremely affordable, I really wish we had visited sooner but we came here on our way to the airport. Last time I visited the islands of Hawaii, I was so disappointed in the food, but this place feels special. It has a much more local and family-run feel, the food was so good, and the people were so nice. I think we were the only tourists at this spot when we went. There are only about 4-5 spots for parking but if you're lucky enough to snag a spot, make sure you try a lot of food here!! Really sweet hole in a wall dive that serves tasty food. There's a choice between getting a hot plate versus poke. We got a lau lau plate with lomi salad and rice, a Kalua pork plate with potato crab salad and rice, spicy ahi poke (1/2 pound) and a spam Misubi. It was delicious and freshly made. Everything was super affordable. The lau lau was my favorite- right amount of bitterness from the ti leaves with the silkiness from the fatty pork- it's a lau lau I came to hawaii for. Even though I didn't make my own poke bowl, for my half pound I could add toppings like onions and seaweed on top of it and it didn't cost extra. We loved the Misubi so much I went back in to get more for our travels the next day and the chef in the back immediately made more- so don't be fooled by the empty tray- ask for it. read more

This is some of the cheapest poke I think I've found on the island! Note that like the title suggests, the poke is to your taste, meaning that you season the poke yourself at a seasoning/sauce station. It's very no-frills. From the moment you turn off Leilani Street (away from the rubbish dump) and into their tiny parking lot on an incline, you'll know that this is truly a local joint. Inside the storefront, there's a glass case with their ahi poke, which you order by the pound. Then you take it to a table that has seasonings: shoyu, salt, oyster sauce, sesame oil, chili water, chili flakes, onion, scallion, etc. Season to your heart's content. Because the ahi is so fresh, I don't think you can go wrong, it'll taste awesome. Also, they sell amazing beef jerky there. I highly recommend you get the shoyu flavor. It's fantastic. Super thin and crispy, unlike the usual American beef jerky that's more soft. read more

Man finally after a year of living on this island my husband and I got to come in and experience the ono grinds! Loved that you could literally serve yourself! The fish was not chewy it was so perfect honestly every bite the cut was just right and the sauces you could choose and how much I mean how can you go wrong if you just listen to your gut! I've been here once during my first year in Hilo and haven't really been back due to the inconvenient location on one of the busiest roads ever. It's located on Leilani Street right at the the corner of the 4 way intersection. The location is actually easily spotted. The parking situation, however, isn't too great. It's a small area that maybe fits 5-6 cars (that includes blocking at least two people in), and it's one of the busiest street ever due to Leilani leading in and out of the transfer station. Easiest way to exit is if you reverse park but that itself is already difficult. I got the combo plate with both the spicy ahi poke and kalua pork plate for $10. At first glance, I thought the price paid for the amount I got was relatively expensive. It was one scoop of poke on the "sides" portion of the container and one scoop of kalua pork on the other side while a huge bed of rice in the "main dish" portion. The beauty of this place is that patrons are able to customize their own poke. I added on more spicy mayo, green and white onions, furikake, and sesame oil on my already premade poke. Yum! Those additions definitely made my poke more delicious! The fish was really fresh. The kalua pork was okay. Didn't wow me. And surprisingly the portions were really, really filling! Definitely worth it. If you're ever interested in building your own poke, this is definitely the place to go. It might be humbug trying to park but once you get pass that obstacle, the poke is worth it! read more

While driving around in Hilo, I found this little small "hole in the wall shack of a place" where they sell poke. This place is very unique, as they have a concept where you pay for your plain or shoyu poke first, and then there is a condiments table where you add in whatever condiments you want on your poke. Some of the condiments include minced garlic, chopped green onions, sesame seed, kukui nut, shoyu, chili pepper water, furikake, chili peppers, chopped onions, and spicy mayo. The ahi they used was outstanding! Very FRESH! They had a limited selection of the types of poke they had, but what they did have, it was all so fresh & yummy! I ordered a poke bowl ($8.00) & you get a choice of two pokes and white rice. I got the shoyu poke, & crab poke with rice. They also sell Spam Musubi's for only $1.00 here! What a deal folks!!!! The owner is a elderly gentlemen........a very friendly, & nice guy! I asked him - "how long has this shop been here"? As I don't remember seeing it in all the years I use to go to the Big Island. He told me he has been here for 6 years. He had told me he use to be a commercial fisherman, then later he started selling poke from a truck, then it progressed to this little store years later......... There are a few parking spaces in front of the store. When you go inside the store, it's basically just counter service. You pick up, then run...........there are no tables inside the store to sit and eat. As for me, I made a new friend today, so after buying my poke bowl, I was in the back room grinding, & talking story with the owner! Lol! Before I left, I had to pick up one of the $1.00 Spam musubi's! For just one dollar, "how can go wrong"???? I mean think about it..........the local Spam musubi is the perfect mobile food! 1. The Spam musubi is portable..........you can carry it in a bag, or just throw it in your pocket (just don't sit on it!). 2. It has the fatty mystery meat - SPAM! - That's a good thing! :) 3. It has soft fluffy rice to protect the precious salty Spam meat. - Good! 4. It has Nori (Japanese Seaweed) to wrap up the soft fluffy rice & Spam, to make it the perfect portable meal! Think about it........I could be walking, and I could still be eating a Spam musubi because everything is nicely wrapped up. In fact, I could probably run, & eat this musubi too! Lol! 5. Last of all, if anyone comes at you aggressively...........if you throw the Spam musubi at them hard enough, maybe you could stun them, then make your getaway! But of course, I would never do that! I mean, why would I waste a good Spam Musubi? It's like throwing a brick of GOLD! Lol! After eating my poke bowl, I was already full, so I just threw my musubi into my computer bag, and ate it a few hours later.......See! Like I said, it's portable! :) read more
