Plays SNL on Saturdays. Cheap drinks/shots perfect for pregaming Mad Myrna's. Bartenders are super friendly and hilarious.

I actually felt comfortable in this bar. There was a popcorn maker, a plus for me and a music box that I could play what I wanted. A few TVs for sports updates that I could catch up on. A bartender that was very courteous and friendly to talk with. There was a bar dog - very friendly and lovable I love dive bars so I will be back and recommend for anyone. read more

Why do you go into a dive bar? Me and my partner went to relax and kill an hour until our room at the Sheraton (hmmm?) was ready...we had a great time with Danny P, the bartender, chatting about the Chicago Cubs and trying out a couple of hard ciders with (who else) the Cubbies playing the Pirates on the tube. There's nothing to write home about at the Polar Bar but if you wanna hang out for a while they've got friendly service and about a dozen TV sets playing whatever you request. read more

Had a great time chatting with the bartender Danny, Cubs fan, in Anchorage! Being a Cubs fan myself, it was a nice surprise. The ciders were tasty, along with the never-ending fresh popcorn. Smells musty and bad when you walk in. It was very warm inside with no circulation. Crowd at the bar were less than hospitable.

$4.25 for a pint of Alaska Amber, pool tables, and Meatloaf belting out "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" on the jukebox. Need I say more? This is your basic tavern. Okay, okay ... it's a dive bar, but it's loveable. It's across from the Sheraton Hotel so you get a good mix of visitors and regulars. Don't go to the lounge in the Sheraton. It's a total rip and besides, the waitress I had at the Sheraton my first night there was here at the Polar Bar, sucking them down, three nights later. On the nights I was there the woman bartender got punched in the face, a man was thrown out for trying to sell his Doritos, and there was a fight on the curb in front. I personally was verbally assaulted by a visiting Texan who decided that since I don't like Bush I must love Obama, (I don't). He just couldn't let it go. Be back? I've been back many times during my stay in Anchorage. If I get back up to ANC again, I'll most certainly drop in. The bartenders are "entertaining," to say the least. read more

If you are in Anchorage during the summer when the sun never sets it might be okay to go here. I wouldn't do it during the midnight winter though. Very much a dive bar with a colorful, aggressive local crowd. If you are a woman they'll (local women) probably even call you a whore and tell you to go home. While we were there, a local drunk was asked no less than three times to cool it or he was out, then another guy was actually kicked out for knocking his bar stool over and breaking a glass. Top that off with the guy who parked his bumper at the curb by the open door and did a breakstand. Yes, he filled the entire place with stinky oily fumes. The bartender charged me for my drink, which I paid for, and then promptly charged my friend for my drink along with his. Shady. We didn't bother calling her on it though as she probably needs the money. We asked for an extra bowl of popcorn and she brought two pitchers of beer instead. Stay Classy Polar Bar! read more

Have always had a great experience here until tonight!!!! Our bartender was just checked out !!!! We were charged WAY over our bill!!! We have been in here multiple times and never had this experience!!! I am disputing our charges as we wanted to split our bill and we were charged over half plus our original charges.....our 96$ bill ended up as a 156$ charge on my card....WTF!!!! read more

Last night, I really needed to use the restroom, but I'm aware of the bar's rule about only patrons being able to use the facilities. On my way into the bar, the bartender, a woman in her mid-30s, was walking out to get a cigarette, so I politely backed out so she could exit. When I entered the bar and approached the counter, the bartender asked what she could get for me. I asked for a rum and coke and she quickly said, "Sorry, you've had way too much to drink. I'm not serving you." I snickered, as I thought this was a joke, considering I had not even entered the establishment. She went on to take a customer's order, prompting me to ask her if she was serious, to which she replied yes. It was the strangest thing I had heard all evening, so I confusedly walked out. I came back 15 minutes later to try to clarify that I was not drunk and only needed to use the restroom, to which she threatened to call the cops on me. After reading other reviews, I have realized that this bar singles people out for being disabled and for having certain looks to them. This is a rude and discriminatory establishment that I feel no regret for giving a negative review. read more

The bar equivalent of a greasy spoon diner. You don't go there because you're trying to be cool or ironic; you go because you like to drink, have fun, and meet interesting people. Stephanie was our bartender the first time we stopped in. She gives and takes guff in handful amounts and we loved her for it. She kept the drinks coming and we couldn't have asked for a better time. We dropped in to close the bar down the next night and were sad she wasn't there, though her replacement did an adequate job. Any time I return to Anchorage, there will definitely be a stop at the Polar Bar involved. read more

Stumbled upon this bar late night, it's right across the hotel I was staying at. there's absolutely no alcohol sales anywhere that I could find at this hours after 12am. None of the gas stations in Anchorage sells alcohol. Very cozy nice little bar and the lady was nice. Filled with local regulars. Very old school feeling I enjoyed it very much. read more

The Polar Bar is the bar that my parents met at 30 years ago, when hanging out on that side of 5th avenue was cool apparently. Well, it's not that cool anymore and I can't say any of my friends ever ventured over there during our college days but upon visiting recently I was pleasantly surprised. No fratty college kids, not too much excitement, which was perfect. I'm not saying it's insulated from the violence of downtown because I don't think anywhere is but it's a nice little forgotten hideaway that most people wouldn't be too interested in. The space is kind of large, with the bar on one side and pool tables and darts on the other, separated by a fireplace wall. The bartender was nice, the jukebox was solid and orderly (no "play nexters", everyone was respectful and patient). Yeah, I liked it. The best part was no smoke which coming from Las Vegas is unusual and very welcome. I've always associated dive bars with smoke but it's so nice to not smell like an ashtray the next morning. If you're staying at the Sheraton I say check it out. read more

This place is actually a dump but it's not bad. It was the only bar within walking distance of the Alaska Backpackers Inn where we were staying. While it is a dump, the service was outstanding and the bartender, "Goldie", mixed the drinks well and was very nice and fun to talk with on a variety of subjects. Mostly locals visit this place and at any one time I never saw more than 15 people inside. Has a pool table, darts, free popcorn. Good prices on drinks, TV's for sports...I would go back. This is a good bar if you're not looking for a modern bar that looks new and you want to get away from the crowd which is what I enjoyed most. read more

The Polar Bar is the worse place you could spend your money. The bartenders are rude and unless your are native, you are not welcome. The experience was AWFUL. I suggest you seriously reconsider going to this bar. If you are looking for a fun place to play pool and have a few beers this is not this is not the place for you. read more
