I recently visited Valley Road Vineyards in Afton, and they are clearly at the top of their game. They just took home the 2026 Virginia Governor's Cup for their 2023 Cabernet Franc Reserve, and after one glass, it's easy to see why. This wine is a standout. It opens with these incredibly lovely violet notes on the nose that transition into a spicy, well-structured palate. The finish is fantastic--long, smooth, and refined. It's exactly what you want from a premium Virginia Cab Franc: elegant but with enough depth to keep things interesting. The barn-style tasting room is lovely, providing a great rustic atmosphere, and they have excellent outdoor seating to enjoy when the weather is nice. The setting at the Gateway to Nelson 151 is as great as ever, but the quality coming out of the cellar right now is what makes this a mandatory stop. If you can get your hands on a bottle of the Reserve, do it before the post-Cup crowd clears them out. read more

Amazing experience here! We ended up coming due to Hazy Winery being closed and it ended up being the perfect experience! They have both inside and outside seatings, plenty of view and an unrestricted view of the beautiful mountains! The service was amazing, we ended up staying until after closing (not realizing) and the workers were very polite and even stated we were welcome to continue drinking our wine while they close up the outside area. read more

Stopped in Valley Road this past Sunday after a hike with my boyfriend. When we got there a live band was playing on the side patio so we ordered our flights and went back out to catch some tunes. We shared a white and red flight to do the "full experience." Most were very tasty! I usually am not a fan of Chardonnay but ended up getting a glass after we finished the tasting. Then my guy surprised me with a glass of sparking rosé that we shared as well. It was so nice to sit outside in the sun and enjoy a beautiful day and a good glass of wine. I have been a fan of this winery since it opened, and was finally able to give it a (relatively) post-Covid visit. First off, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. They pointed us towards both a classic flight and spring flight, and though there was some overlap in the selections we didn't mind as we were sharing. The wine here is definitely more geared towards sweet wine fans, they even have a sweet flight! Even as a dry wine lover though, these were sweet wines I could really appreciate. They also made for an AMAZING frose -- frozen rose for the unfamiliar. It was delicious and I think even had real blended strawberries! Perfect for our trip on one of the first hot days of Spring. Though there isn't food here they sell small snacks that are really great, we packed our own cheeses and enjoyed snacking on those in the outdoor picnic area. This winery is also home to one of the most beautiful views, a tough competition among wineries in the area. The valley overlooks a small pond, the grass and trees are so green, and the great red barn venue is just amazing and so neat. They physical space is perfect for any type of event, we saw a bridal shower while we were there! This is a great spot, you have to make sure its on your winery list. And for anyone looking to host a big event, take a visit out here soon! read more

Great winery to visit on a rainy day! Valley Road has a nice view of the some mountains that can be glimpsed from many of their outdoor tables. This winery boasts an expansive set of covered outdoor seating which allows patrons to sip wine outside while being protected from precipitation and from the hot Virginia sun. We found the wine to be comparable to other wineries in the region. From now on, I think Valley Road Vineyards will be our winery of choice in the area when it is raining outside. read more

We were on a bachelorette bus. Some of us still had seltzer's in hand as we came off the bus. We were told at the entrance that we couldn't have them. We all happily obliged and apologized to the lady at the front for our mistake and threw them out in front of her. We absolutely didn't mean to do this and it was an oversight on our part. AFTER ordering $136 of wine, the owner comes to our table demands to see in our cooler, reprimands us for jeopardizing his abc license, and then asks us what's in our tumblers (WATER) because it's 89 degrees out and there's not servers. We again, happily obliged in bringing our cooler - which housed all of our food but also had some of the seltzer's left at the bottom - back to the bus. You could tell from our table that we weren't drinking anything but waiting on our wine. We understood and apologized for bringing drinks in but he executed it so wrong. He came 15 minutes after we arrived to accuse/question us. On our way to return the cooler, a lady asked if everything was ok, we said no, that man could have been nicer. She informed us that he was the owner. I guess he heard the conversation and stormed over and started arguing with us in front of all the customers. Told us that we should know the liquor license laws and said we should leave. We said ok, can you refund us? He said absolutely not and then walked away from us. Listen, as an owner of a business, if you are upset and want customers to leave - then be prepared to refund them their money for drinks that have not been served. We would have happily left had you refunded our money. Make sure you don't come here if you're on a bachelorette weekend - or if you do make sure someone in the group checks your drinks on the bus! This place I had driven by many of times and never stopped it always looked closed to be for some. When we came this past weekend we were greeted with a warm welcoming for the two ladies behind the bar. They were very knowledgeable about the wines and helping choose which flight to pick. They even had mulled wine. I have never had or heard of it before. I took my flight and sat next to the fire with my pup and enjoy the cool day next to a warm fire. And the staff were good about checking quite frequently on the fire and adding more wood. They saw I had a dog and brought him a treat which he enjoyed. There was so much space for people all over the ground to hang out. Highly recommend!!!! read more

There seems to be numerous buildings that people can rent for events. The wine was ok. Not much was offered for food pairings but they sell local cheese and snacks in the store. read more

An adorable tasting room which is situated right off the road in the heart of the Blue Mountain Valley. We first visited Valley Road back in 2018 and they were relatively new, but it was a pretty enjoyable experience. Fast forward to our second time here this past weekend - they have grown so much! We split the rose flight and the classic flight. I love that they have so many options, and I liked all but one of their wines. They have plenty of indoor/outdoor seating, both in the sun and covered. They're dog friendly as well. Overall, a great experience and I love how convenient it is to come here. read more

Five stars based in excellent prices, service, and wine. Their winemaker is from King vineyards, but the owners are retirees who decided to have a hobby. I have to say; when I retire, this is the gig I want! The grapes are local but they are growing 4 acres of vines on the slope behind the tasting room (which is actually a refurbished plant nursery). While they only have 2,000 cases/year now, they want to at least double that. What I tried: Viognier: Honeysuckle nose, little sweet, oaky undertone Distano: White blend with Viognier, Petit Manseng, and a little Chardonnay. Floral nose Pinot Gris: Very citrusy, which I liked but not everyone in my group did. Sparkling Viognier: I'm not a sparkling drinker but my friends liked it and suggested it with oysters. Rose: Made with Merlot, dry light strawberry notes Merlot: Great earthy nose!!! Medium bodied, long finish light cherry notes. Favorite of the bunch. Petit Verdot: chocolatey, which is unusual for PVs. Lighter and smoother than other PVs as well. read more

We do not recommend this location as a wedding venue. The CEO/owner is not user friendly, and he is arrogant to the point of being rude. Although we did not incur any damages to the property, we only received 45% of our deposit back. The reason cited in an email 6 weeks later is that we did not make our agreed upon departure time of 9:30 pm. To our understanding, we had to vacate the premises by 10:00 pm, which meant we had to say goodbye to guests and ensure all guests were off the premises as well as break down and remove all personal items, including decorations, food, bar, and DJ. We unfortunately did not vacate until 10:30 pm, as this was a large wedding of over 140 people. In his email 6 weeks later and NOT that night, the owner actually accused us of continuing to drink and party, which was absolutely not the case. Everyone was working diligently to clear the place, and we loaded 6 vehicles to ensure we had everything. Furthermore, in the MAD RUSH to pack up and clear out everything, our daughter's wedding earrings were thrown in the trash. Lastly, his email stated that, since we received a 10% military discount, it was basically a wash because the cost of an extra hour was $500. This was a very convenient bait and switch. The CEO's email reply to our inquiry about the deposit was condescending and very passive aggressive. We recommend spending the extra money and finding a location where the owner is more flexible and understanding. He took what was a beautiful day and minimized it. read more

The wine was spectacular and 106 Street Food Truck served up an amazing meal. So very glad the original restaurant we planned to go to had no parking spots. 3/5 August 2019. We stopped here as part of a attempt to visit many if not most of the wineries in the area. The Ambiance was cool in the staff was great. The wind was in line with the others in the area. It wasn't bad just not great and with so much competition it didn't stand out. I did appreciate the more relaxed and less stuffy atmosphere then some of the competitors. It did feel a little more expensive than some of the others in the region. It's worth a stop if you're looking for a more relaxed place than some of the other options in the area. read more

This place is a gem! With so many wonderful vineyards in Charlottesville, I think that it's sometimes hard to stand out, but this one does. Alongside the beautiful Mountain Views, there is a beautiful lake tucked away that's visible from the outdoor seating. This is my favorite winery in the Afton area. Its a cute little welcoming spot with friendly and accommodating staff. I truly liked (if not LOVED) every wine we tried there. I believe we tried them all. I joined the wine club and I seriously had trouble picking just 4 wines. My preference is red but I enjoyed the white here as well. What a great, new winery in Nelson County, right on Rt151! As we were driving on Rt151, headed to another local winery, we saw the banner for this one and decided to give it a try. The tasting room is BEAUTIFUL! Mostly all repurposed materials is what it's built of. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable too! They have a nice selection of wines that they've worked to make with another, very good local winemaker. Since they're new and still growing their own vineyard, most of their grapes come from other local vineyards. We enjoyed their reds and whites alike! If you decide to stay, sip & sip, they offer a nice selection of local cheeses, as well as other packages treats and a warm baguette too! Happening upon Valley Road Vineyards on a hot day was a lovely surprise! As it's a relatively new winery (opened in 2015), they're still getting established, but I enjoyed their wines quite a bit and am looking forward to seeing where they go from here. The service was wonderful--our pourer was new, but it sounded like she enjoyed being there and talking about each of the wines. (She also gave us very generous pours, which is always a plus!) Because they're so new, the majority of their grapes are grown off-site, but our pourer let us know that they've been growing their own grapes in earnest for future winemaking potential. Atmosphere-wise, the tasting room was more homey and down-to-earth, which made the experience feel more approachable. I believe they're planning on making a patio off their secondary building, which will be great since most of the views are blocked by the tasting room from the current terrace. In terms of wine, I was impressed with what they've done in such a short time! I got to try their 2015 Viognier (complex, floral and a little woody), 2015 Chardonnay (mostly steel-aged, light), their 2015 white blend Destano (so easy to drink, just a hint of sweetness but well-balanced with acidity), Fete Sparkling Viognier (festive!), 2015 dry Rose (the only one that fell a little flat for me), 2014 Merlot (very mellow red, a little earthy and a little fruity), 2015 "Torn Curtain" (half Cab Sauv half Chambourcin; very earthy), and 2014 Meritage (well-rounded). My friend took a glass of the sparkling Viognier and I took a glass of the Destano outside to enjoy the weather. It is a very pretty place, and I'm looking forward to seeing the views from their planned upper-level patio! Will be back to see what they have to offer in the future! read more

If we could rate this place a zero, we would. Came in for the first time to check it out with family from out of town and as we came in one of our cousins took a picture making a silly face with their wine and we went about our day spending time with family, when a very intoxicated woman approached our table, specifically to our cousin who took a silly picture, and started legitimately yelling at him for (direct quote) "taking a retarded picture" because she "has a r******* daughter". Everyone fell silent and for about 5 minutes she proceeded to stumble and repeat herself yelling at not only him, but all of us for making a silly face and none of the staff members did anything to help de-escalate the situation. They all stood back and just watched the whole situation unfold. We finally apologized for her feeling the way she did and we all decided to get up and leave to de-escalate the situation ourselves and she proceeded to follow us out yelling at us, again, extremely intoxicated and repeating the fact that she had a "r******* daughter". It was ABSOLUTELY not anyone's intention to make fun of anyone with a disability, nor do we believe in the use of the label, "r*******". The fact that the staff did nothing but watch us be harassed based on assumptions is unacceptable. read more

Hands down the worst experience and worst service I've ever received. We decided to go to Valley Road Vineyards on 151 simply because we live out of state and have never been! Our family from the area brought us, giving our group a total of 6 people. We all ordered our wine, and sat down at a table inside. There were two other couples inside the vineyard at the time, and the staff members. MAYBE 10 minutes into drinking our wine, one of the couples had left but the woman had come back inside, extremely intoxicated, stumbling and proceeded to yell at one of the members of our group about a photo she had seen him take with his wine making a silly face that she referred to as a "retarded face". She proceeded to yell at him about how she (and I quote), saw him take a "retarded picture" and was upset because she has "a retarded daughter" who was actually at the winery with her. We all fell silent, giving her the space to say what she needed to say and the majority of us being confused because a lot of us didn't even know a picture was taken (and the picture wasn't actually taken). It was absolutely NO ONE's intention to act disabled. We understood how she could be upset, but we knew she was extremely intoxicated when she couldn't even clearly explain the disability her daughter had, and WE say disability... SHE said her "retarded" daughter had a neurological problem, but mispronounced neurological, and couldn't stand straight while proceeding to repeat herself and yell at all of us. Not one person in the staff did anything to de-escalate the situation. They simply stood back and watched. We finally apologized for her feeling the way she did, to which she said "no, you're not sorry" and continued to repeat everything she had previously said. Knowing she wouldn't stop, we stood up, leaving all of our wine and de-escalating the situation ourselves, and she continued to follow us out yelling about how no one would have any idea that her daughter had any sort of "problem" because she looks "completely normal" other than the fact that she has neurological issues, and continued to yell at our cousin for making that silly face with his wine. We left, but we're extremely disappointed in the staff's lack of handling the situation, and we're even more disappointed in the fact that in being the bigger person and trying to de-escalate the situation ourselves we weren't able to stand up for ourselves. We find it interesting that she had such an issue with a silly face but proceeded to drunkenly yell in a public vineyard that her daughter was "retarded" instead of saying "has a disability". There were so many ways this could've been handled maturely and respectfully, but that's not what happened and no one did anything about it. I have zero respect for an establishment that allows such awful behavior. I would rate this place zero stars if I could, and trust me, we'll never be back. read more
