Flying Fox was our first vineyard in what we dubbed the Blue Ridge Booze Tour for our trip! I needed something sweet and they had two options on the menu that seemed to fit the bill. First off, I wish I could remember the lady's name that helped us because she was awesome! She was informative, polite, funny, and took care of us right away. The three of us did the same flight, but only two really got my attention. Definitely a cool ambience and place to hang out though. I loved the antiques and decor. We wanted to go back before our trip ended but never got the chance to. But we'll definitely be visiting again when we're back in the area! read more

Super cute vineyard! I have always driven past this vineyard but I don't think I've ever been to it! It's December and so we had some really cool Christmas decorations! It was super crowded and the atmosphere was very Christmas-y and happy! The staff were amazing and super attentive and they had some really good drink choices! They even had some cool drinks that you could keep the cup for a little bit more money and the Santa drinks were worth the $25 to keep the cup! It's so so so cute! I loved my drink!! read more

Bravo, Flying Fox! We came here with friends to celebrate a 50th anniversary back in 2017.....we bought a 2015 red table wine and forgot about it in our wine cellar. We opened it tonight and it was really smooth. It didn't turn bad like almost all of the Virginia wines. I'm certainly surprised and really happy! read more

Flying Fox is a must visit along 151, when it first came years ago, the art work albeit simple really caught my eye driving by. They have a great selection along with excellent people on staff that add to to the whole of the experience. There is a fair amount of parking here and also a little space for outdoor seating amongst the hill with a blanket (they may have a table or too). You will not go wrong with Flying Fox and it's pretty early on the 151 trail, so make it one of your stops!! read more

I am truly baffled by the number of people giving this place 5 stars. I've been to 20+ wineries in the Charlottesville area and this is BY FAR the worst one. Me and my wife joke about how bad it is. There are SO many other better wineries around, some very close. The outside is dilapidated and old, the only seating outside is basically in the parking lot, and there is no view at all. The only saving grace is they have decently priced wine, which is not enough to get me to go back. Overall it is so bad though, please trust me and go somewhere else read more

Apparently this is like the "petit winery" of Veritas. Didn't realize that and a little disappointed since we just came from there. Veritas makes all of these wines, they just have a different vineyard. Solid wines so if you want a lower key version of Veritas, this is your spot. read more

This review is for the new location for Flying Fox; also under different management! Flying Fox's previous location felt like entering someone's home. This has a more industrial-building feel to it. That said, I like the wines more than my previous visit. Emily from Veritas winery is the wine maker. Nate was my server, and he was definingly excited by his wine! He walked me through a tasting of 6 x wines. Whites: Their first Pinot Gris was OK; lots of green apple. They had a second Pinot was skin fermented which gave it an orange color. It was sorta tangy, almost salty. I kinda liked it, but was mostly taken aback how different it was. Reds: The 15 Merlot had an amazing plumb/cherry nose and black cherry on the palate. The 2014 "Trio" red blend had some fruit on the palate. And the "Sly Fox" Cabernet Franc was aged in bourbon barrels, but despite that wasn't over powering. I bought a bottle. Perhaps the most interesting one was their vermouth. I'd always thought of this as a drink mixer, but this was actually a stand-alone drink. It's actually a fortified wine made with wormwood and viognier, which gave it a very floral-y vibe. read more

Decent winery for a rainy day. Flying Fox was packed on the Saturday afternoon that we visited in May. The tasting room is cozy and plastered with stuffed foxes and the antlers of various animals. Classic rock music played over the speakers at a comfortable volume for the duration of our visit. We tried the Rose which neither of us cared for because we thought it was lacking any strong flavor. Overall, Flying Fox is a fine winery, but there are better options in the area. read more

I love going thru the VA wine trails. I haven't come close to do them all yet. There are a few stand out favorites though that keep drawing me back. My very favorite is Flying Fox. I 'found' their wine at a restaurant and went there to try the rest. This isnt an actual vinyard but a winery. I think people get these confused. You wont see vistas of grape vines here. The outside of the building has a funky retro sign of their label and there are some nice tables outside to enjoy it. Inside are an eclectic mix of old world steam punk and chill. There is a nice sitting area inside as well. Complete with comfy couches. Then you get to the tasting area. This is no frills. I am glad for it. Frills means maintenance which add to the costs which would raise prices. Instead, they let their product do the 'talking'. Lets talk about this product. They have something noone else on the trail has....a pinot gris. This is an orange wine that is dry and light. Fantastic! Then there is their Viognier which is my fav and the table white which was too sweet for me. Their reds are a little acidic and very fruity but not too robust. If you like sweet then their trio is for you. They have added Vermouth to their mix but as I am allergic to Juniper I cant report on them. They are very popular though. They are usually very very busy in the late afternoon so get there early for the personal experience. You wont regret putting Flying Fox on your list of wineries! read more

This was a nice looking establishment. What was unique about their offering was that they had a wide selection of Vermouths. So I had to try a vermouth tasting. The 3 stars is based on the fact that I wasn't too pleased with the vermouth. My partner enjoyed it, but I don't think I would do it again. I did however, appreciate that they had serval different styles. So if you are a vermouth fan, you should check this out. We also did a wine flight, but that wasn't anything noteworthy. read more

This place is unique and beautiful. I love the old books, antiques, and maps every where. The wines were good. But I felt the vermouth was the hero of the tasting. The red wines were delicious. Merlot was a little bitter but good. Trio was simply delicious and smooth Table red was sweet but not overly so. The white wines are good but a little bitter. In their defense I'm not really a white wine drinker. Table white was sweet and smooth Pinot Gris I wasn't a fan of. It was way to bitter The Rose wine surprised me. It was sweet but not to sweet and is a very good sipping wine. A couple of wines were sold out. But we will be back to try more! read more

The interior is super cute and I love the wine and vermouth labels, absolutely beautiful! A firm 3.5. I first visited Flying Fox when they were in their old location, a quaint little cabin. I loved how cozy it was, and the guy who did our tasting was hilarious. Fast forward to this past weekend, and this was our last stop. The new, industrial space is just cold, and it's like they lost a bit of their original charm. Their outdoor seating is extremely limited, but the way the indoor seating is set up - it felt like we would be too loud for the space. We ended up grabbing a blanket and sitting in the grass so we could be in the sun. We bought two bottles but did not do a tasting this time. Their merlot was the most interesting I've ever had - super oaky, and I ended up taking a bottle home. read more

This cool venue has an updated edgy elegance and calm vibe inside. 4/5 August 2019. We stopped here as part of wine/beer tasting trip and were trying to hit as many stops as possible. Flying fox stood out of the group as it definitely takes a different approach. The appearance and decor is far from the traditional winery. They have a industrial/steampunk vibe that was a refreshing break from the usual appointments. The wine was pretty good with a couple really nice vintages. The bar staff was cool and made our visit fun and relaxed when compared to the usual. Would highly recommend stopping here. read more

There are some great wines here but the tasting room feels empty of decor. I'd love to see some of their label art in frames on the wall. Flying Fox is time and time again my favorite winery in the central Virginia area. This small, unassuming building is always staffed by friendly and attentive individuals. The wine is fantastic. The tasting price is totally reasonable verging on cheap (they recently raised it from $5 to $7 which includes 8 or 9 wines and a glass). Something interesting to note is that they have the same wine maker as Veritas. While this does not have the same sweeping hilltop views as some vineyards in the area, it makes up for it in coziness. There is also an outdoor space where you can sit and have a glass of wine with a snack if you feel so inclined. If you are interested in joining a wine club, Flying Fox has an excellent one. for $30 quarterly, you receive two bottles of wine and free tastings. The staff are knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about the wines they are serving. Stopping here is always the highlight of a day at the vineyards. It is an excellent place to escape the pretension of wine tasting and feels much homier than some vineyards. Flying Fox feels like a small business in a good way but excels past many of it's competitor in terms of quality and service. read more

Vibes. vibes. vibes. Flying fox has a loud presence on the outside and "quiet" on the inside. The mural on the side of their building is so unique and awesome. We weren't originally planning on stopping here, but had to check it out! The workers were so personable and inviting- much appreciated after visiting Veritas. They usually have vermouth, which is very unique, but they ran out a couple of months ago. The aesthetic of the inside is awesome. It had a speak easy vibe, but with the energy of a great small winery. It was a nice surprise that they were playing Blink 182. They offered 5 tastings for $15, which is a really great price. I have had better wine, but I thought theirs was consistent with the price point. I bought a bottle of the rosé to take home because I like a dry rosé. The labeling on the wine is very sophisticated and well done. We stayed inside, but there was ample outdoor seating available as well. All in all, you should def incorporate flying fox into your winery tour stops! read more

I went to Flying Fox on 8/11/19 on my way to dinner. Of all the wineries I visited on my vacation, this was my favorite. The ambiance is none traditional. It has a steampunk vibe. It has no outdoor space (so if you're looking for an outdoor hangout I wouldn't recommend it). I loved all the artwork on the walls. The artwork was right in line with company's branding. The wine in my flight was drinkable for most palates and affordable. The flight was little more expensive than what I was use to but you get to keep your tasting glass. My bartender was excellent. She genially seemed to enjoy her job and speaking with people. She also really knew her product. In a nutshell, no complaints if I go back to the area I will visit again. read more

I give the vermouth an easy five stars -- truly delicious and beautifully branded. The wines are lovely, too, but the vermouth steals the show. Flying Fox is gorgeously decorated and conveniently located. A would-be perfect tasting experience was it not for a somewhat rude tasting associate! When I shared my excitement to try the semi-dry rosé, I was told it would be "nothing like the sunset blush at your sorority". This struck me as a presumptuous insult, nevermind the fact that I am an experienced wine taster and was never in a sorority in college! I would have let this slide, but it actually did sting. By far, this was my (and my boyfriend's) favourite winery along our Monticello wine trail route. I actually prefer beer and just went along with the wine tour as something to do, but I do not regret coming here. While it doesn't have the majestic scenery of other wineries in the region, it makes up for it with some good wines and outdoor seating where you can enjoy your bottles and your own food. Wine tastings are $7 for 8/9 pours and a glass, which is great. The inside decor is beautiful and intimate with fox paraphernalia everywhere and large blown up images of vines. Overall, I had a great experience coming here and actually bought a bottle to gift. Definitely drop by if you are into wine! read more

The smallest winery on Nelson 151, but what they lack in size they more than make up with (very popular) crisp whites and bold reds. Driving to Flying Fox you'd think you were entering someone's small guest house. Not large and flashy like its competitors, the inside is a modest tasting room with a small bar and a fireplace sitting area. It feels homey and warm, and you're provided with a much more intimate wine tasting experience. We were warmly greeted upon walking in and served immediately. A few of the wines in their tasting menu they were sold out of, including the Pinot Gris, Rose, and Cabernet Franc. However, for $5 we were still able to try six different wines. My favorite were the crisp Viognier (a must try in VA and a Gold Medal winner), the blended Trio (Merlot, Cabernet, and Petit Verdot), and the sweet Red Table Wine. However, the best was saved for last, with the Red Table Wine spiced and heated. This is a must try if you're visiting in the colder weather, both white and red drinkers will love the smooth taste. The prices are also very reasonable at $16-20 a bottle. Flying Fox is another hidden gem along Nelson 151 and is highly recommended. Sit outside on the porch, try some french food from the food truck, and enjoy the intimate experience. read more

Very impressed. Visited Flying Fox on a whim - never heard of it before - and left very impressed. My credit card bill was probably glad it was too hot in the car to purchase any wine because I'm sure I would have walked out with at least 6 bottles otherwise. As I mentioned, visited this charming little (I do stress little - very small tasting room) winery on Labor Day. When we arrived around 12:00pm, there was one couple sitting outside at the picnic tables and no one in the tasting room. The lady who helped us was kind and helpful. Overall, I was very impressed with the wine. With such a small winery, and especially one that produces so many varietals - I was definitely skeptical but very happy to be proven wrong. My favorite wine of the tasting was the "Trio" and I liked it so much I got a glass to enjoy after the tasting. Their rose was also delicious, as was the Pinot Gris. Frankly, other than their two semi-sweet table wines, I liked everything I tried. Wish they weren't sold out of the Cabernet Franc! We ordered a cheese plate to go with our tasting and enjoyed the rest with glasses of wine once we were done - they have a small side area where you can go and sit on couches and enjoy a glass. There's a fireplace right there too which I imagine is lovely in the winter. One other thing - their wines are pretty reasonable, $$-wise. So many Virginia wines can be pricey so I was excited to see several bottles under $20. read more

Our favorite winery in Virginia. The tasting room is a tiny cottage located on the Le Bleu Ridge Bed and Breakfast in Afton. Though it is one of the smaller tasting rooms of all the wineries in the area, their wines have the biggest flavors. We enjoy all of the wines they offer and always look forward to a tasting. My fiancé just loves the red table wine. It is such a versatile and appealing red wine. We left with a case of it last time we were there. There is some outdoor seating to enjoy a glass of wine and check out the hills and beautiful landscapes. I cannot recommend this place enough. read more
