So I'd like to start off by saying that I've tried many Peruvian chicken places in MD and VA in the past. This place, compared to quality I've gotten from other places, really leaves you saying, "that's it...?". I ordered delivery through Door Dash and got a combo: 1/2 a chicken with 2 sides and an extra side of cole slaw + sauce. My sides were plantains and yucca. I normally also get a side of fried rice (more carbs yaaaas!), but they didn't have any on the menu except just white rice. Altogether not counting Door Dash fees, this meal was about $20 plus some change. I was surprised at how small the portioning was. I purposely ordered 1/2 a chicken so I could share some with my husband later. The order was at least packed well. Came in one of those brown foldable to-go boxes. I also got no forks or utensils or napkins. The taste was at least good, though the chicken itself was a tad bit dry. Overall, I probably will stick to Super Chicken for the Nova area and Sardi's for the Maryland area. read more

The chicken is yummy, but for me, the real winners are the sides. The fried yuca is to die for, perfectly fluffy inside. The black beans are creamy and soft in a great liquid. The white rice is basic, but fluffy and very yummy with the beans. The green yellow sauces are also so delicious and add a lot to the chicken. read more

It is basically a hole in the wall just before you get onto VA Route 7, but it certainly lives up to the expression that sometimes the best food is in the worst places. I got here just as the store opened at 11 am, and knew what I wanted immediately. A Pollo Peru melt, no onions, side of fries and plantains. The prices are relatively cheap, but here, at nearly $15, that is quite a bit but I ordered a bit more. A little more than 10 minutes later, my order arrived. Here is how it all went down. The sandwich is delicious. Perfect portion, excellent combination of flavors, and quite fun to eat. This sandwich blows Waku's steak and cheese out of the water. Just be careful because it does have some kick to it, but you can always change it to your liking if you want it more mild or spicy. The fries were excellent too. Not too hot, and they had excellent potato flavor. The portion is on point too. Too much would have made me feel gluttonous. Too little would have made the dish look cheap. The last part, the plantains, were hit or miss. They were too hot and maybe that explains why some of them were too mushy. Maybe it is because I got there too early, but they did not blow me away. I also thought the overhead music playing incredibly took away from the experience. I walked out of there with a massive headache and some tinnitus that I was still feeling when I got in the car. Despite the two complaints, I would come back and try some of their rotisserie chicken. If it is anything close to the sandwich, which I hope it is, then this restaurant has officially won me over for Peruvian chicken in Herndon. read more

First time I've been to this location, and it's been a while since I wanted to try it! Ambience- I went with someone, fully expecting to stay and enjoy our meal. We were the only people there and they obviously have a good take out operation set up. But after we sat down we could only stand the obnoxiously loud, bad music for a couple minutes. We decided to change our order to take out. The dining room did seem clean. Food- we ordered one chicken sandwich, one 1/4 chicken, and one large side of yuca to share. The taste (sazón) was there for the chicken and the yuca. But the sandwich was mostly lettuce and tomato, it could have had more chicken. One beef I have is with the amount of tiny sauce containers you are allotted. 2 for the chicken, 2 for the sandwich, zero for the TEN DOLLAR side of yuca. Any respectable Peruvian knows we like to dip our food in sauces. I'm no stranger to paying extra for sauce, but this is not okay. It left a bad taste in my mouth, on top of already overpaying for the food. In short, the taste is there, but not worth the money for a take out place. I thought it was overpriced. Walk-in experience: The chicken's nothing special but it's also never bad. There's almost never a line, and there always racks of chickens on the spits. Despite all that, a typical walk-in experience for me is standing in the waiting area for my lunch... for 15 minutes at a time. (I don't get it. It's just a half chicken.) Very disappointed and shocked at how they service deliveries. I was fine with $19 for a whole with 8 pieces, prices are high and we are all trying to survive and take care of our families. But to intentionally cut a chicken in a way to cheat a customer is sad. You cut the breast in 3 pieces and threw in two legs.... 8 pieces. I have eaten at your location and was served correctly, but I guess deliveries can be cheated since they can't travel to your store. The medium fries for $4.20 was one potato worth of fries. Again, prices are high for all of us, but I still see potatoes at $3 for 5lbs at a non-bulk rate. After seeing the Yelp reviews and noting that they were positive, we decided to give Pollo Peru a try. We were here on a Sunday around 5 p.m. At that time of day, there were only a few occupied tables and one party ahead of us in line. Just note that the menu board is on the wall opposite the cash register, and to the left of the doorway. The ordering process works this way---When you know what you want, you tell the cashier. Also, let him/her know if your order is eat-in or take out. Once your order is rung up, you are give a receipt with a number on it. When your food is ready, your number gets called out in both Spanish and English. You go to the counter to pick it up. Pollo Peru is located in a building that was once a Pizza Hut---a Pizza Hut that was mercifully put out of its misery. It's so good to see a restaurant that serves much better food with much better service in its place now. There are plenty of places to sit if you eat in. Most tables are 4 tops with a few 2 tops that are placed by a wall. We both ordered the same thing--- 1/4 chicken with white meat. Each meal comes with 2 sides, we chose rice and beans. Originally, we had hoped to order platanos but they were out which was a disappointment. To drink, we both got a bottle of Inca Kola. It didn't take long for our food to be ready. The meal was placed on styrofoam plates. You get your own napkins, plastic silverware and straws. If you get a cup of soda, there is a soda machine. When you are done eating, there are trash cans where you can dump your trash and leave your tray. We were both very impressed with the chicken as it was quite moist and flavorful. The skin had great flavoring and the seasonings were executed very well in that the chicken was not over salted (something we've come across before in such places). As I said, I was disappointed that they didn't have platanos but the rice and beans made me forget all about them! The beans were black beans that had a hint of garlic---subtle enough to notice it was there but not overpowering. They came out with ample liquid so that you can put it on top of the white rice and mix it up. My husband thought the chicken was the best pollo a la brasa he's ever had. As for me, I think it's a tie between Pollo Peru and Pollos Inka. We both agree that we will go here again. The place is kept quite clean as the staff is good about keeping the dining area looking decent. Dinner cost $20 + change---so not only a good meal but an inexpensive one, too. read more

We enjoy eating the chicken from Pollo Peru. The seasonings are perfect, the birds aren't too fatty and the price is right. Throw in some black beans and yucca and call it dinner. Like many other chicken joints in Reston/Herndon, the yucca is a valuable root. So valuable a root that all of these places have an additional charge if you would like to eat the yucca. OK.....if you say so. So why the four stars? Well, in the time it has taken me to write this, you would still be standing at the cash register....alone. The good thing is that you will have some spare time to watch the chickens spinning in the rotisserie and ponder the value of the almighty yucca root. Then someone shows up and takes your order. Then you wait a really long time while the staff keeps disappearing behind the spinning chickens. You hear laughter. Finally, they all return to the front and start making your order. It takes forever. I could have grown a Yucca by now. But hey, the chicken is really good. Eat some. read more

The coleslaw is overloaded with mayonnaise, the chicken was very dry and very small for a quarter chicken, the fries were good, but the whole menu was overpriced. If I did not follow their menu combos, I had to get items à la cart, which is not the case in other Latin chicken places. Service was also notably slower than other Latin chicken places that have even more business than they do. They also don't display the food like other Latin chicken places. There are a few towns in the DC Metro area where people never leave. Therefore all they know is what is nearby, they have no experience. Herndon is one of them, so it is always hard to trust ratings in places like that and you have to go in and experience for yourself. I have done that 4 times at Pollo Peru. Compared to the 40 or so other pollo places I've eaten at (I actually have a ranking list) this is near the bottom. The service is quite slow for chopping up an already cooked chicken. The seasoning on the chicken is very plain, and their green sauce recipe is not good. The value is decent, the chicken was cooked well and the skin was nice and crispy which saved the ranking a little. However comparing it to other places around I'd recommend finding the next place over and broadening your Peruvian chicken palate. read more

Have been here a few times mostly for carry out. Good roasted chicken, properly seasoned and moist. Usual offerings for sides but servings are a bit meager for large. Not a deal breaker since the chicken is the star here. If theres one thing I could wish to be better is they give more of the awesome sauces that they have. 2 regular and 2 of the spicy is not enough for a whole chicken. I gave Pollo Peru 5 stars a while back. In fact, this has been a regular go-to for me for years. The changes they made over the past few weeks are not good. The menu is different and everything must now be ordered ala cart. I think the price remains the same or possibly slightly more. That is not what troubles me. What bothers me is that Pollo Peru now gives much smaller portions of side dishes. Ordered individually, rice is about half of what it used to be, same can be said about the other side dishes. I came here based on my friend's recommendation. I have something similar down the street (Guapo's) and it's pretty comparable. The restaurant is clean and spacious with a good number of tables. The menu is big, on the walk as you walk in. The chicken smelled so good when you walk in. The cashier was nice and the food was ready within 5 minutes. The chicken was delicious. Good flavor and juicy. The yellow sauce was different then what I've tried. Had a little spice to it! Very good and will definitely return. The tres leches was also different. Not as moist as the other ones I've tried, but maybe that works for some people. It's a little more cakey at the top and most of the milky moisture is towards the bottom half. Was really looking forward to this place opening up since it's right around the corner from me. Maybe I had my expectations too high. Hoping for an experience comparable to the Tysons Super Chicken, I popped in on a Friday night to get a meal to go. Looking at the menu, it seems like they have the chicken part down well, but the sides are severely lacking. There's really only 4 or so choices to pick from. Not the best. I put in my order with the friendly staff, and proceeded to wait about 20 minutes for my order to be prepped. It's not like most other locations where you go down a line to pick out what you want cafeteria-style - you place your order restaurant style. This is one point where Pollo Peru can definitely improve. There were actually a lot of people waiting in front of me, so maybe they had just run out of chicken in the roaster. I don't know. But if you're supposedly a chicken place, I'd think that you'd have a constant stream of chickens that can be taken off the racks. Flavor-wise, the chicken is alright. It's about on par with most other places, but the Tysons joint still beats this one out. If they can figure out the logistics a bit better, they will probably do well. The wife and I just moved into the area and were excited to see this place open after longing for our Arlington favorites for a while. The restaurant is clean (should be, just opened) and well lit. The people at the counter are friendly. We ordered a 1/4 chicken and the Peru Pollo sandwich; both were decent. The fries were very well cooked and the coleslaw was not bad either. I can say the only issue is the price. In my many years of restaurant management I've come to learn that the one thing you'll always find out is that if you nickle and dime your customers you'll soon have neither. I understand why you want to charge more for extra sauces but $.50 for a tablespoon of mayo, sour cream, and Ají Amarillo paste is absurd. Are people saucing you out of business? No way! You can make a gallon of this stuff for under $20, that's a $100+ profit for those counting at home. Look to cure your food coast in other ways, like soft drinks and alcohol like normal restaurants. read more

Sauces were not great either mild yellow was just like plain mayo no flavor, green spicy sauce was chunky and just spice. As another reviewer mentioned, this location has changed hands many times over the years and none have stayed long, but I'm hoping Pollo Peru sticks around. We tried it out over the weekend and were pleasantly surprised. First off, they did a nice job renovating the interior, I think this is the first one that hasn't still resembled an old Pizza Hut inside, the windows let in lots of light and the paint color makes the space seem less cramped than previous versions. Our order included a half chicken, with sides of black beans and coleslaw, and then the Pollo Peru chicken sandwich with sides of rice and fried plantains that I paid extra for. Plus drinks it came out to being a little over $20 for two people -- more than what I anticipated before walking in the door, but I felt like it was more than enough food when our order was ready and we ended up taking leftovers home. My boyfriend thought his half chicken was delicious, well cooked and enjoyed the coleslaw. I requested that the sweet and spicy sauces be on the side of my sandwich and I'm glad I did because it definitely is spicy and I liked being able to control how much was on there. One thing I noticed right away was how fresh the bread was and even mentioned it as the other day at work I was forced to get Subway for lunch and my sandwich had the worst stale bread -- thankfully not a problem here! The rice was nothing special, just rice, but the fried plantains were excellent. Everything tasted fresh and we agreed that we will certainly come back again! Aside from it being a little pricier, the only other real negative I could think of was the tables could've used some wiping down. It was well after the lunchtime rush and while they were still busy they could've had someone go out and give the tables a quick once over as customers come and go. Just went back to Pollo Peru, I definitely give them an A for customer service and cleanliness. The cashier was very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. However the chicken continues to be very dry. I'm Peruvian so I have had pollo a la Brasa growing up at several in Lima and I have been to almost every spot in NOVA. Due to the proximity to my place I wish that they would find a way to make their chicken Crispy yet juicy. Unfortunately I will have to continue to go to other locations for our weekly pollo a la brasa craving. The yellow sauce it's good and their green sauce has improved a lot since my last review. Oh, pollo a la brasa, pollo asado, Peruvian-style roasted chicken, hallowed be thy name. Thank the gods of pollo heaven that there are so many options in Fairfax County from which to choose! One of those option is the Pollo Peru establishment, with one in Reston's Home Depot shopping center (see my glowing review of that institution here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/pollo-peru-reston?hrid=1yU3mE9uK7e7E1ZcVFMzAg), and the other along that gray line border between Sterling and Herndon, in a converted former Pizza Hut building. Access is fairly easy directly from Route 7 and Dranesville Rd. It's fairly empty, generally speaking, on weekday evenings, so I didn't run into any chicken shortage issues, which befall many of my go-to pollo spots during the lunch rush. Staff was friendly, counters and food prep areas appeared to be clean. There's a display case of prepared dessert items to go. There are also fountain Coca-Cola products, and canned/bottled Inca Cola/Chicha Limena. Pricing is what you'd expect and commensurate with other pollo asado establishments that offer the standard 1/4 or 1/2 or full chicken with the proportionate number of sides. Chicken itself was fine, but neither as juicy nor as large for a 1/4 white as I've had consistently at Waku, Chicken Rico, and Super Chicken. Saltier, too. Sides were average (along with most elements of this establishment); yucca and sweet potato fries were neither offensive nor memorable. You're provided one yellow sauce and one green sauce; I wasn't charged extra for additional spicy green sauce, so I'm not sure what their policy is on sauce. There are other options nearby in the myriad Sterling shopping centers just west on Route 7, and also the sister (and superior) Pollo Peru is also close by, not to mention my two favorite Herndon establishments, Waku and Chicken Rico. I can't say that this Pollo Peru is my favorite, but it wasn't terrible, either. read more

Big portions! The chicken had a flavor better than any chicken joint that's been in this immediate area. We've been looking for a new place to go to regularly for a meal that's delicious but also not bathed in grease. And this is one of them! Tried the flan - and i'm a flan freak. This thing was magic. I love the char chicken dealio but got pretty burned out on the same gig time after time. Pollo Peru is across from where I buy my hockey equipment and I've contemplated a lunch drive by from time to time. Finally I got in the other day expecting the "usual". Clean place, owner on site, and wow.... big ass chicken yo. When you can eat the wing and drumstick and they haven't been dried up and over cooked.... u got a home run. Big fresh side salad, good yucca and spicy sauce.... man... lip smakin' good. Best yet....CHEAP. All this for less than what I typically pay for the same meal. This restaurant is conveniently located near my neighborhood. So I was excited it when it open several years ago. I was expecting to make this my go to spots as I love Peruvian chicken. Unfortunately that did not occur. Every time that I go to this establishment I do get subpar customer service. That cashiers are not pleasant and have absolutely no enthusiasm. But that is not even the reason why I have been disappointed with this place. The Chicken is dry and it is lacking any flavor. The sides that are rather small compared to other local Peruvian restaurants and they are a bit pricey or as well. I have gone several times and everytime I am reminded why I have stayed away for a long time. I instead go to Pollo Inti (inside the huge shopping center across the street) for some delicious Peruvian cuisine. They are always friendly and seem excited for my business. read more
