Got dinner to go here on a Wednesday around 5pm. It was a real disappointment for pollo and that's hard on a hungry stomach. We got the carne asada, half a chicken, and a philly cheesesteak. It came with yucca and fries. The carne asada beef was tough and the rice and beans it came with was ok. The philly cheesesteak had a lot of american cheese so it was very rich (not the good kind) and salty. The pollo was the most disappointing for a pollo establishment. Super dry like it was a day old. The fries we got were all like one inch in length it was very odd. The yucca had to be the best thing they got going. It was moist inside and crispy outside and pairs great with the sauce. I would probably come back for the yucca and that's the only reason why I even gave this three stars. read more

Unfortunately Mr. Pollo is under new management and the quality of the food is not the same. I stopped in to pick up some yuca along with rice and beans to go. Sadly, the yuca was the worst I've ever been served and I've been to MANY Peruvian restaurants throughout Northern Virginia. Another thing I noticed for the first time was they weren't cooking rotisserie chickens and there were no customers in the restaurant. However, they did increase the size of their buffet style ready to serve lunch/dinner meals. That's where the beans and rice that I ordered came from which was very dry and bland. Lastly, it appears that they're cutting back on the jalapeño sauce and the white sauce as the containers were only half full. The remodeled restaurant has a nice feel to it, and the service was friendly and polite. But unfortunately the quality of food has gone downhill and $18 for a rotisserie chicken is pretty expensive. I enjoyed our dinner tonight as we tried something other than our typical Peruvian quarter chicken platter... the chicken is always well cooked and perfect spices! The spicy green sauce is good and the yellow sauce is just ok. My only tip would be to ask for the yuca extra crispy... it comes out nice and crispy and hot! Dry and soggy yucas are deal breakers for me at Peruvian joints... I did try the carne asada and I would say it is very flavorful! I know a place down the street that is amazing... but not bad. The chicken was great! It had a good balance of flavor and char. My only gripe was the yucca. Maybe I received a bad batch, but I didn't like how they were cooked. I couldn't tell if they were overcooked or under-cooked, but something was off. I felt pretty crappy for wasting those carbs without a return in taste. The yucca gave me a 3 star experience, but I'll give an extra star since the young man that took my order seemed pretty stoked that my name was Gregory like the guy from "House". Go figure. This is our go to place to get some halal chicken Peruvian style. But I seem to notice that they forget to give the correct number of items, if I ordered two of something I end up getting 1 only. I think they forget to add the right quantity and I should check. I just assume they will get my order right but something is always missing. This was my first time ordering here so I don't know if it was a bad batch but the chicken texture was so off putting. The closest thing I can compare it to is canned chicken, where it breaks apart in you mouth kind of mushy. My toddler was even weirded out by it. The coleslaw was not good. My wife is a discerning chicken connoisseur, and I kept telling her she needed to try some peruvian style. Only had it once myself, but boy was it tasty before. Mr. Pollo has created a problem for me now...My wife loves it ;) so that means I will be the designated chicken-picker-upper. All good, because it was sooooo delicious. I don't mind paying a high price for food but I expect to eat something good, it was dry no taste and on top they don't give you the Peruvian green salsa and cream salsa I went back ask the lady nicely if I could pay for some and gave me attitude telling me you don't eat the sandwich and yuca with Peruvian salsa. This is one of my favorite halal peruvian places I have been to. The scenery is great its a tiny cute place to have lunch and very authentic. I get the carne asada from here and its delicious with great texture and flavor every time! I also get rice and fries. Their yuca is very good too. The owners are very nice and explained to me that they are not muslim but they serve halal meat because they noticed how high in demand it was in the area which I commemorate them for considering there are not too many halal hispanic restaurants. I have really enjoyed all of my experiences here and I take my family here since they love it too. The chicken is pretty decent too and they have alfajores and orchata as well for all you authentic spanish cusisine enthusiasts! They do play a lot of spanish music in the background and theres no wifi so they want you to socialize. Its pretty cool because there is a sign that says theres no wifi and to pretend its 1993 so it really is authentic and old fahsioned which is great! Rice and beans were ok. "Steamed Veggies" I watched them boil them. Came out with a lot of broccoli cuts and carrots. None of which are that great for you. Work on your side game and I would consider coming back. Not worth the money for the quality of food you get. It's like they bought the cheapest bag of veggies at the grocery store, boiled them and threw them on a plate. No thanks. If you like sauce with your chicken ask for more. I used to work very close to El Pollo Rico in VA Square, which many consider to be the gold standard. Mr Pollo can definitely hold their own when it comes to tasty chicken. I brought a friend with me on my last visit. He never had Peruvian chicken. He was amazed and couldn't wait to bring some home t his wife! Food is great but customer service is not the best. I work about 10 mins down the street, and twice they've messed up my carry out order. But I understand mistakes happen. The second time it did, I called in just to let them know that they messed it up again and I'd like to get the right order. The guy who got on the phone, was a bit stand off-ish, insisting there's no way they messed it up. In any case, i'll probably go back a few more times to see if it's the same deal every time or what. I like to come here and grab lunch. I usually take my food to go but occasionally dine in. I think the chicken is super moist and tasty. I've eaten here several times and the chicken has only been a bit dry once. I'll call it a fluke? I always order the 1/4 chicken with yucca and black beans. I agree that the yucca could be better but it's still pretty decent. If you like spicy food, dip the yucca in their green sauce - like how you dip french fries into ketchup. The yucca is amazing with the sauce! I seriously love that green sauce and try to remember to ask for extra when I'm there. It takes me 2.5 containers of green sauce (they are very small) to dip all of my yucca. The beans are fine. No issues there. This place is a great deal for the quality and amount of food that you get. The cost of the 1/4 chicken with 2 sides is less than $7! I don't eat fast food but my coworkers do. They pay more for a fast food meal than I do for quality food. F*#% the McDonalds that is right by Mr. Pollo. This place is by far the better option! read more
