Pollo Ranchero on 1st in Santa Ana is good and does not disappoint. Today we had menudo (sin grano) and chili verde. Menudo was good however they don't add grano for us lacked a little flavor but honestly it beats out most menudo spots. Now for me the star of our meal was the chili verde...this meat was chunky, tender, and flavor-the chili was filled with flavor and spice (perfect heat level). Not to mention, yes the tortillas made with lots of love. Our waitress was helpful and patient- service with a smile that will bring you back! Parking can be tight but accessible. One huge recommendation that would bring in a variety of people....restaurant needs a deep cleaning - vents, fans, window ledges, outside areas which will attract many others. This place did used to be good. The food is ok but the service from the waitresses is horrible. I don't understand how the owner doesn't read this reviews or he just doesn't give a fuck!! I used to be a regular, stopped by after work a few times, and then one day I stopped by with my Mom after a meeting, I looked very professional and looked pretty. None of the waitresses helped us or asked if we needed anything. One of them was a complete BITCH and kept staring at me which made my Mom very upset and uncomfortable. I called for help and she totally ignored us. Never went back to this place!! She must be the owners side bitch since he doesn't do anything to improve her customer service skilled. Im a regular at pollo ranchero for the menudo on Sundays. I usually go with family on Sundays but after the last two visits and I've been disappointed with their menudo, it's not like it used to be. It's tastes water-down and flavorless. I usually go with a group of 10/12 on Sundays and spend about $250. I remember the last time I was there I waiting for the check to be processed, which took a long time since they only have one cash register. A waitress comes over to the table and tell us we need to leave because people are waiting on our table, In a very rude manner. I told, her that I'm waiting for my credit card, and that's why we are still here waiting on. For these reasons, I won't be back. Since your food and service went from 10 to a 0, I won't be back. read more

I love the way this place has fresh handmade tortillas. Its one of a few places that I've gone to that make it this way. The tortillas are so delicious, you would think they were flour! Anyways, this place isn't fancy but the food is good. I will definitely return to try out other dishes. It was a nice place to have a quick lunch. The pork in the Chili Verde is tender. Came in around 10:30am and there was already a wait to be seated. Once sat they truly have speedy service took 2-4 minutes for items to be brought out. Half of my party had the menudo which was delicious according to my mother and others in my party had asada tacos and they were so flavorful. I had the alpastor burrito man that was HUGE!!! But so flavorful. I absolutely loved it. And I'm quite picky when it comes to the meat. The best part was the cafe de olla, coffee from a pot, I wanted a pot full lol it's the traditional black coffee with cinnamon. You don't need any more sugar nor creamer it's perfect as it is. This place has the best menudo I've ever had at a restaurant. It's clean and less fatty than other places. It's served with handmade tortillas and you get chips, re-fried beans and salsa. Delicious!!! They have other things on the menu as well, which will not disappoint. My hubby ordered a carne asada torta and it was AMAZING! It had beans, queso fresco, and lots of avocado. We also ordered a chorizo and papa sope and it was delicious! Yes, it's located in the heart of Santa Ana and it's a hole in the wall, but don't let this deceive you! The food is excellent. 5 stars for the ceviche! They make it fresh upon ordering. The shrimp is super clean and fluffy, the flavor is perfect...I am literally in love with this dish! We also tried the family chicken meal, which came with chicken, rice, beans, chips, salsa and freahly made tortillas...ut was good as well. The chicken was spicy and the flavor kind of reminded me of mole...with a slight kick. The staff was very sweer and fast. Luckily my boyfriend knows all the good hole in the walls in Santa Ana and this place you'd never think has amazing menudo. He first brought me here months ago and we havent stopped coming ever since. Its always packed on the weekends because of it. They sell other food too but I dont know how good it is. You can take your own pot and have your menudo served in that to take home. They give you chips, salsa and bomb beans! If you're a lover of beans like I am then you can definitely appreciate them. Theyre drenched in grease and have some chorizo added. We usually pay $18 and some change for two large menudos and one w pata (pigs foot). Food is great, service is great, pricing is decent, the only down fall is the size of the place and the fact that it can get busy so that's why we order in sometimes. My coworker returned to work and wanted me to sample her cafe de olla. I was a little busy and kind of blew her off but she insisted so I tried it. Oh. My. Goodness. I want more! How could I have never tasted this coffee? So delicious just black. I've never had black coffee. I'm definitely going back for more. But it is well worth it in my opinion!! They start you off with their complimentary house made chips, salsa and bean dip. Those items alone were so worth the wait!! I ordered the chilaquiles with pork & green sauce. It was so rich, fresh and tangy with all the yummy crema & queso fresco. My boyfriend ordered the chicken with mole sauce & requested 2 fried eggs on top of the rice and beans. It was so phenomenal!!!! And the home made corn tortillas was spot on for grabbing the chicken soaked with mole sauce. Thankfully my boyfriend doesn't mind me eating off his plate so I got to enjoy both dishes!! This is legit Mexican food. The tortillas are hand-made, and I HATE beans BUT dam, their beans were simply amazing! Aesthetically, the place is not the best, BUT the food is definitely worth going to the heart of Santa Ana. The sopes, tacos, are just delicious, I am obsessed. You can see the cook over the counter, where you can see that they cook pretty healthy, and the food is more organic that any of your chain restaurants.
