For a restaurant in a national park this was a hidden gem. I thought we were going into a cafeteria style building to get some eats after a hike. Turns out its a full restaurant with some amazing food. It was pricey but kind of expected it. We tried several items on the menu brunswick stew, pulled pork, whales sandwich and the best do not skip was the enormous blackberry baked alaskan style dessert. It was huge and even more delicious! We stopped here for lunch during the shutdown and were so happy that this location was open. It was very busy and we got in before they closed for lunch at 2:30pm. We were seated promptly and our server was very nice and helpful to grab us drinks right away. We ordered the burger and pulled pork sandwich, both with chips, and it was all very good. Prices a little high but good sized portions. We capped off lunch with the blackberry ice cream pie ($13), which was the BEST choice. It was creamy and deliciously cold on a hot day. Our waitress was not the most attentive, they ran out of the ipa after having only one and the prime rib meal that was pricey was cold and tough. Also it was so bizarre to serve potato chips with a prime rib. And this was Mother's Day. read more

We stumbled upon this place after a hike in Shenandoah National Park, ready for a cold beer and a nice meal. We started with the brussel sprouts (a little tough but good flavor), had a blackberry margarita (delicious), then ordered ribeyes, medium rare with whipped potatoes and broccoli. The steak was perfectly cooked. Blackberry ice cream pie was A MUST! They also had the Shenandoah Valley Cloggers entertaining at the same time, which was cool. The location in the mountains and the view of the Shenandoah Valley are spectacular. The service and atmosphere are good. The food is variable. The Brisket Philly was made with thick tender meat served on a fresh baguette overwhelmed with a flavorless cheese sauce. The "crispy onions" were hard and not identifiable as onions. I have had other very nice meals here. Perhaps it was an off day for the cook. The dinner menu has many more items than the lunch menu and has never disappointed me. I wish I liked both better but I just couldn't get into it. The dinning room was relatively busy for a Monday but not as busy as I've seen it. Pollock Dining Room was outstanding in the "before times". Based on our past great experiences at the Dining Room, we booked a trip to Skyland with the intention of ordering to-go dinner from the Dining Room each night because we were not comfortable dining indoors. Unfortunately the Dining Room's handling of COVID leaves much to be desired. To-go orders are an after thought with a very limited menu and hours. No to-go is allowed at the Tap Room, either. The item I tried to order off the to-go menu wasn't even available. So instead I order a Caesar salad with grilled shrimp. This $20 salad didn't even come with Caesar salad dressing, it was just a dry salad. And one shrimp was too under cooked to eat. The Buffalo wings didn't come with any blue cheese either. They also didn't give any utensils or napkins with the to-go order. I guess you're supposed to eat a salad with your hands in your hotel room. You'd think due to indoor capacity limitations Delaware North (the company that manages Skyland and the Pollock Dining Room) would be encouraging to-go orders. Negative comments are not a reflection on the staff except possibly the kitchen manager, because the servers did a great job for both of meals we experienced. The food wasn't just subpar for the price. It was nearly rock bottom. The weather was bad and the fog/misty rain had us here, and because of that reason only we had a second meal. Stay away especially from the soup selections. Out the can or something like that, which made the $10 plus price a ridiculous price to pay. The dining area was clean and on a clear day the view is probably pretty sight, but I won't be taking in the view again from the dining room. read more

Went here for breakfast a couple of time during a recent stay. Classic meat and potatoes place. Ask for salt and pepper because most things are not seasoned well. I was surprised by the number of low star reviews, we had a great time here. We came over thanksgiving weekend - thanksgiving was a madhouse (get reservations well in advance) but we had no problem walking in at other times. We got a seat right by the window for our second night. I ordered the campfire trout and my husband ordered the pasta. Both were delicious with large serving sizes. We had a hummus plate from the taproom earlier as an appetizer so didn't have room to try the desserts, but they looked fabulous. Definitely a great option within the park! read more

I first heard about this place from Instagram explore page. I had never been here before although I'd been to Shenandoah many times. My boyfriend and I were on a day long trip to Shenandoah and after a lot of hiking we wanted to stop at this lodge for dinner. We were honestly starving after a long day. When we got there, there was no wait although there were a lot of people in the dining room and taproom. It was a little bit confusing at first that there were two different dining areas with different menus. One of them was a Bar area and one of them was an actual dining room, so we chose the dining room because we wanted to have a proper dinner; by proper dinner, I mean we were craving burgers we were so hungry. As a vegetarian, sometimes it can be hard to find things to eat, but they have plenty of vegetarian options. I went with the impossible burger, and it was probably the best thing I've eaten in a really long time. My boyfriend ordered the Angus burger and he was also very satisfied with his dinner. The view from the dining room was so amazing. I could've cried if I was a little bit more emotional that day. We were there just in time for sunset and it was so beautiful. The hostess was very kind but our server was just OK. It kind of seemed like she had a long day and was just ready to go home, which is fine as somebody who works in the service industry. Others might not have enjoyed her service. I highly recommend coming here after a long day in Shenandoah or maybe just for dinner. I honestly cannot wait to come back! read more

I'm surprised to see that no one on Yelp has reviewed this place. During the Labor Day holiday, I visited the Shenandoah National Park to get a good fill of nature before heading back to the oppressive swampy DC city life. On our way out of Shenandoah NPS, we stopped into this restaurant which is located in the Skyland area. Skyland also has lodging, camping, horse stables. The restaurant itself is quite beautiful with tall glass windows with views of lush trees and the horizon. Service was good with no hiccups. For lunch, they do serve beer and wine and do give the craft beers created for the park a try! I got the portobello wrap. It comes in a tortilla with sautéed portobello mushrooms, spinach and red peppers. Instead of fresh mozzarella, I substituted with pepper jack cheese. The vegetables were fresh but everything was just really salty. Also, I asked them to put the garlic aioli sauce on the side. I'm not a fan of mayo or white sauces, so this was a good choice for me. You will also get a side with your wrap and I had sweet potato tots but I found them way too sweet and I wasn't aware of a $2 up charge for this choice. My dining mate opted for the fish and chips. The fish offered was pollock. However, to my dining mate's surprise (but not mine), the fish was a frozen slab. Also, the fries were stale (or not cooked thoroughly). Most of the food was absolutely to die for! Also the hostesses Brittney and Sarah were the sweetest things. All of the staff were quick and friendly, and they truly seemed like they loved their jobs. The thing that dropped it down one star was that while the food was good, they were way overpriced. My family stayed at Skyland for a few days so here's a rundown on what we ate and thought. Fruit Smoothie- thick and flavorful. However no ice?? Really?? I've never had a warm fruit smoothies before and I don't think I'll plan on having one again 4/10 Quaker Oatmeal- absolutely delicious! Comes with brown sugar, almonds, honey, and blueberries. Was the perfect textures not too liquidy but not like concrete either 10/10 Açaí Bowl- very good. I've never had one before as I'm from Cleveland, which isn't known for healthy trendy foods. It tasted very good but I'm not sure how soupy it was supposed to be? I almost would have preferred it in a cup to drink rather than having it in a bowl and having it like soup. Also the menu says it should come with bananas, blueberries, and granola, but it was only topped with granola. 7/10 Skyland Build Your Own- eggs done over easy seemed almost rare but over medium was perfect. The sausages tasted amazing but were a little dry. They were sweet but had a fair amount of black pepper in them. The applewood bacon was excellent but inconsistent. Sometimes, they were crispy and sometimes a little floppy (I like a little flop so I'm not complaining about that). The toast was amazing simply because of the toppings! They had strawberry jelly, blackberry jelly (locally made!!), and marmalade. All were tasty! 8/10 Chicken and Waffle- INCREDIBLE. The chicken was crispy and not an ounce of grease was to be found. The waffles were soft on the inside and just a tad crunchy on the outside and were sweet (which is nice because a lot of waffles I've had over the years are tasteless and rely on the syrup). The apple butter maple syrup really completes the dish but the pickled peaches seemed extraneous, and couldn't compare in flavor to the rest of the dish 10/10 Blackberry Pancakes- the pancakes tasted like a sweet cloud but interestingly, they were rather flat. They were very filling so I wouldn't recommend eating these before hiking. The blackberry syrup was the best syrup I've ever tasted and the whipped cream was uniquely sweet and slightly fruity in flavor. 10/10 Rainforest Coffee- be warned. VERY strong. Make sure to ask for lots of milk if you can't stand strong coffee Bread Basket- the Hawaiian rolls and corn bread muffins were soft and so tasty! However, the cheddar garlic biscuits were a little dry and did not have as much garlic flavor as I expected. TMI but be warned- the biscuits can make going #2 a very smelly experience so I would skip out on them or maybe ask to swap them out for the other kinds of bread. 7/10 Crab Soup- Creamy and Delicious! 10/10 Wedding Soup- my mother said it tasted just like her grandmothers, which is high praise. 10/10 Tomato Basil Soup- the best tomato basil soup I have ever had! It wasn't too acidic and didn't upset my stomach at all! 10/10 Build you own salad- I got the spring mix with shaved Parmesan, Italian dressing, falafel, and candied pecans. An excellent choice if I do say so myself! 10/10 Fish & Chips- A HUGE piece of fish that was excellent, although the skin was a little greasy. The fries shouldn't have been put in a metal container though, because it sucked up all the heat and made them cool off faster. 8/10 Falafel- EXCELLENT! Interesting because the inside was green and not the golden brown I was used to. A tad dry but honestly I haven't had a falafel in my lifetime that hasn't been a little dry. 8/10 Blackberry Lemonade- Sweet and refreshing! Could not get enough of it. 10/10 Pulled Pork Tacos- they were alright. It wasn't really pulled or shredded but rather like slightly shredded clumps. Very dry and not enough bbq sauce on it at all 3/10 Blackberry Ice Cream Pie- looks like a huge serving but very light! The blackberry ice cream was very refreshing, similar to a sorbet. 10/10 Blackberry Cobbler- all around, very good. Although I did not ask my parents the details of their taste experience 8/10 Cookie Skillet- soft, gooey, and utterly delicious!! Instead of getting vanilla ice cream, get it with the blackberry. The fruity flavor mixes nicely with the chocolate and balances it out so it doesn't overwhelm your mouth with sweetness 10/10 Creme Brûlée- could not get enough! Candy topping was perfectly done and the custard was to die for. 10/10 Apple Pie- very flavorful and delicious! The crust was a little soggy but it didn't diminish the experience that much 9/10 read more

Considering this is in a rustic area of Shenandoah national park, we had low expectations, but this place was great! For lunch, I had the sweet potato poutine, which amazing - even better than it sounded. My wife enjoyed the club sandwich with fries, which were fine. We were nearby again for dinner, so we ate there again. The pork chops and Brussels sprouts were excellent, and my wife loved her pot roast. Everything was perfectly prepared. The blackberry cobbler dessert was delicious. Outside the park, probably just a 4-star place. We were very much looking forward to unwinding and relaxing after having spent the past couple of days traveling and enjoying a family meal together upon our arrival at your restaurant. While we understand that we are all still facing this pandemic and parts of the state are at different phases of reopening, it was very disheartening and embarrassing to have waited for a while, only to be escorted to the table originally assigned to us and find out that we would be unable to eat together at that table at all since we were a family of 6 (2 adults and 2 children, 1 toddler, 1 baby). Could there have been a sign at the door (for parties bigger than 4) placed ahead of time, so maybe we could have been prepared to just place an order for pickup or takeout? After having to go through the long line twice, first to be given a table we weren't allowed to use, and then to wait to place a food order to go, my husband had overheard the supervisor tell the hostess that there was no way to rearrange seating for us. We understood that our party of 6 wasn't easy to make room for, but what we didn't understand was how it was okay for other large groups of people (adults) to be seated together (at the bars and in the dining area) not socially distancing, and yet, we were unable to be accommodated accordingly. My husband even offered to have the toddler and baby sit in our laps to ease the need for extra seats and space. Our hostess was apologetic despite her many duties that evening --including being a waitress and cashier-- and we were mainly disappointed with her supervisor not making some kind of effort to ensure that our time spent there was favorable. The manager, a woman in a green jacket, tried to make amends by listening to my husband's concerns and immediately addressed the social distancing issue with the crowd in the lobby. Honestly though, by this time, it was already getting late and my family and I were just waiting in the car and ready to just leave and go to our cabin. Then he says "I will be refunding your entire stay, refunding the cost of your meals, and sending you a voucher for a nights stay plus meals". A very nice gesture. That was over a month ago!! Last night we ate at Big Meadows taproom for a mediocre dinner. Wanted to try here to see if any different. Dining room is very large and very warm. It may have been because the sun was very strong-even through the shade. I had the quinoa salad and added shrimp for extra charge. Dish was small-medium served with a scoop of quinoa in the middle and some pita chips-some of which were stale. Balsamic dressing made it tasty-there were 4 grilled shrimp for an extra $6. Yes, I know-what do you expect-it's the only game in town. I get it. I'm not complaining-my meal was better than my frozen pizza last night. I also had a cup of crab soup. Hubby had pot roast which needed some doctoring with salt-flavor not there. Fries were weak. Waitress was friendly-we have no complaints there. The poorest service a restaurant has given us ever. They get an extra star because the food tasted ok. Our unfortunate saga with them started with me calling the dining room to reserve a table for a party of 15 two days prior to our dining date. I spoke to someone there who took down all my info and even what dietary restrictions some folks on our group had, spoke to me for a good 7 mins. Them didn't actually make a reservation in their system. So we show up hungry after a hike with kids and older folks in our group. And they have no idea about the reservation but said someone has noted folks with same dietary restrictions as us coming in so yes I must have talked to someone in their dining room. I stay polite and explain that we had counted on eating at that time and we had young kids and older folks who needed to eat pretty soon. The manager assured me he will try to seat us as soon as possible. I even suggest several times to him to perhaps break us into 2 groups so we can get seated sooner. He then proceeded to seat large number of Med size parties and a party of 13 all together with no apparent "reservations" ahead of us. We wait a full 1.5 hours in their cramped waiting area . That whole time the manager or the staff in no way try to make us feel better at having to wait that long with a large group and little kids despite having done our legwork, and being asked to wait because of the dining room's fault. They don't even tell us we can order drinks form the bar while we wait. They don't tell us they could do take out for us much faster. Basically no follow up after they said they will seat us in 30 mins and then take 3 times that long. When we figured out ordering the drinks part on our own, the bartender was rude and gave me a carafe instead of a wine glass to carry around and sullenly handed me the right size glass (chipped and with scratch marks on it if course!) right behind him after asking twice. Then they finally seat us at 2 separate tables at opposite ends of the restaurant, and the host didn't even bother pulling as many chairs as people at the table, so I have to ask people at the table next to us for extra chairs they are not using. Besides one of the waitresses at our table, the whole staff was rude and unhelpful. The food choices I was told on the phone we could order apparently was not really true, and couldn't be ordered after all. We also couldn't help noticing that we were the only non-white dining party in that entire place, and all the white folks seemed to be treated fairly courteously and seated ahead of us. I was wary of coming to this part of Virginia and now I know I realize why. Will never be revisiting this area or dining here again. read more
