The best pet store I've ever been to! I've been all around looking for a pet store that actually takes care of its animals. From the enclosures to the animals themselves, it's such an amazing environment. I've had nothing but positive experiences with all of the employees, especially Kyler! He took his time helping my husband and me look at multiple pets, and he was incredibly knowledgeable about everything, it was actually super impressive, lol. We took my sweethearts little sister to this pet store and we had a great time! They have many exotic animals for sale. The only thing I would gripe about was the smell. With there being a lot of animals there is always the possibility of smelling urine, but it was a lot more potent then other pet stores I have been too. read more

This pet shop is set up for everyone to enjoy the animals. Nice inviting environment. The pets seem like they are well taken care of. I havent seen such active animals in long time. The reptiles were all awake moving around. The bunnies came close to glass and hopping all over their cages. Parrots were chewing on toys and talking. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Loved that they had lemurs to check out up close. They also have an area for parties and ability to interact with parrots. They also had wide variety of items for your pets including large cages, baked goods, clothes, leashes, wide variety of foods etc. If you need an area to bathe your pet they do have a pet wash for a small fee. read more

Such a fun spot! Definitely a day of fun for kiddos. They offer an amusing style of interactive display of the animals. They have such unique variety of animals in the shop. I've never seen a pet store with active lemurs and free roaming parrots! Absolutely amazing to visit. Overall a fun time. They had a good variety of pet supplies even found a hideout for our turtles! The place was pretty clean, but it did have a smell. The staff here did seem less attentive and kind of in their own world. But the animals did seem cared for and active. However, they had so many fresh and salt water fish. A great variety and reasonably priced for any aquarium enthusiast. The staff is young but so friendly, patient and knowledgeable. read more

If I could give this place no stars I would. One of the worst pet shops in San Antonio Texas. I went in today and honestly I left really uncomfortable. The reptile part was so under cared for and herpetology is my life. I wouldn't wish unwell wishes on no one but this place needs to close. I asked about the iguanas and why they had 3 different species in an enclosure and was told "we mange to get by somehow" absolutely not. A desert iguana with tropical iguanas?!? Nah man. Also animals that you shouldn't have and a black n white tegu in an enclosure that's way too small. They sell "starter set ups" but literally a terrarium for a aboral herp labeled "leopard gecko starter setup" truly makes me sick. Will not be returning. It's a side show more than a pet shop. read more

Went in looking for a fish but after seeing the state of MORE THAN HALF the beta fish DEAD, we decided the getting a fish from there was probably not the best idea. Took four photos but honestly could have taken a lot more because they were just dead. One of them, stuck to the filter, was turning white and cloudy because it has obviously been dead awhile. I feel sorry for all the other animals they keep there is that's how they treat the beta! Especially the poor duck that just sits in the "pond" staring at a wall. I loved this store growing up and wanted to start my first reef tank. Went in bought a $350 dollar 10 gal tank with everything included so I figured it had to be good right? Got home added everything up and it came out to about 100 bucks but even that's a stretch I think. The stand it came with completely fell apart in my car when the gentleman set it in my car (no fault to him it was just a crappy stand unbeknownst to me). So I called asking for a refund and they told me they'd only do store credit since the card readers don't have the option to return the money to the card. However the guy I was on the phone with before the manager told me that said they actually do have the ability it's just a store owner policy to not give a refund back to the card. So I told her that's what the gentleman told me essentially telling her she lied to me about the inability to refund my card. After telling her she finally said she would inform the owner, and she told me I would get a call when they made it to the store later that day. It's been a week and I haven't received any call from anyone from Polly's pet store. (In my opinion) Polly's pet store takes advantage of new hobbyist or uninformed buyers to up charge them ridiculous amounts, and when stuff breaks from their OWN employees setting it in the cars to take home they refuse to give a refund and gave me the run around. I have always loved Polly's but I will certainly never do business with them again if they continue to do it like this. read more

I have a 125 gallon aquarium with a variety of fish; many for over 10 years. Last week, I stopped by Polly's and bought 4 fish (2 Dwarf Honey Gourami's and 2 Rainbow fish). After they were introduced into the tank, one of the Gourami's died the same day. By the next day, there were another 2 fish that died; by the end of the week, I had lost about 10 fish. I've had my aquarium for about 15 years and this has never happened before. I took the fish back to Polly's, as well as a water sample, and requested that they test their fish to see if they had disease (which, to me, was obvious). They had no way to test the fish to find out what was causing their deaths. The water tested fine, which I knew it would, as I have it professionally cleaned every month. Polly's gave me a store credit for the fish that I had purchased that had died (3 out of the 4) and charged me $8.99 to test my water! I am still losing fish (found another at the bottom this morning) and am waiting to see what happens next. All of this to say, BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU BUY YOUR FISH! read more

Great place to get what you need when you need it. The employees are friendly. The setup is great. Kids love it. So much for them to see and experience- the bird sanctuary, the aquarium, the mini barn setup with the gerbils and rabbits. Great place to take the kids to waste some time. My only gripe is that they don't have the check in coupons anymore. If I can find those 10% off coupons again I can start getting my Fromm dog food here instead of ordering it online. Abhorrent. Basically a trashy mini zoo. This is not a standard pet store that sells typical domesticated pets- they advertise and sell exotic animals that most people don't have experience handling. For example: salt water creatures, sugar gliders, oh yeah and prairie dogs (which are quite literally wild animals). If you go to this store you will quickly notice a detestable smell and a sad atmosphere. Most of these adult exotic "pets" are likely taken from their home in the wild to be bred, cycled into exotic animal trade & placed in isolated captivity. Do better for these creatures. read more

We have passed by this gem dozens of times over the past couple years but never stopped by until today! We finished setting up our 46 gallon bow front aquarium just before Thanksgiving and we have been looking for unique fish to help fill it. I love the Cichlids but finding a good selection has been tough until today!! We are actively talking about setting up another aquarium (46 gallon is out of room after our purchase here today) just to fill it up the amazing quality and selection of the fish here at Polly's! They also have an awesome selection of reptiles and birds! You can tell that the birds have been hand tamed and come from a reputable breeder. This place reminds me of the mom and pop pet store we used to buy our fish and birds from when I was a kid! I'll say their pricing is a bit more than Petsmart and Petco but you absolutely get what you pay for and I don't mind spending the additional money knowing that the quality is there! This place is as kid friendly as you can get and I would absolutely recommend bringing the whole family but expect to leave with a pet!! read more

I had gotten a fish called the black moon or "fancy goldfish " with the eyes pertruding, and a really pretty calico goldfish, I come home everything's good and I set up the tank and 2 hours later the black moon passed away.. although I recommend this pet shop I don't think they should've sold me and affected fish from the batch... (one other fish had a white spot) but they said my fish would be okay IT DIED TWO HOURS LATER... but I do recommend this shop just a little sad read more

I recently bought a few things from here, about three days ago, including a 'fancy rat' and trachea dog bones. The first problem was the bones, I opened them and noticed webbing on them, and upon further inspection there were worms in the treat. Next was the rat, he was sneezing on the way home but I passed it off as stress. He let me hold him and I assumed he'd cheer up with my other male... but instead he isolated in the corner and continued sneezing. The next day, he bit me and went after anything near him, a clear warning sign. He died the next day before I could give him any treatment or medicine. The 'feeder' rat I bought to be a pet is doing much better than him. She was sneezing to, but feeder rats aren't always the healthiest, so I gave all of my rats antibiotics just in case... In all honesty, this place seems more like a tourist attraction than a pet store now. I only visited the small animal section; cages were dirty. The way it is set up inside is cruel for the animals. They have animals that should not be in a store, much less in the enclosures they are in. It seems like a lot of people are swept up in the novelty of it, but there needs to be more awareness about the faults of exotic pets. Even if they aren't for sale, there is not a world where two ring tailed lemurs should be in a windowless room. It would be a really cool place if they did not have non domestic animals. read more

Decent mom and pop pet store! They take excellent care of there fish however their reptile husbandry could use some work. I don't know much about mammals or birds, so no comment other than they have a wide variety! I got a baby Leopard gecko from them today and he appears to be healthy and well taken care of. This is by far the best pet store in town. It has everything you need from cats, rats, reptiles, fish and the list goes on. This place was named by another store that didn't have what I needed so we came to this pet store and was I surprised when I walked in. Let me start off by talking about the smell when you walk in. It was more of a clean store smell than what your typical pet store would. Usually when you walk in you get hit by the bad smell but not this one. The store was well organized and sectioned by animal type so you know exactly where to go. This place was more of a mini zoo, except you can by the animals. The reason I came in was because I needed dubia roaches for my beardies and this was one of the only pet stores that carried them. I was helped by a female worker which was very nice and helped me get exactly what I needed. This is a must see pet store! It is family owned and definitely better than your chain stores. Came for a birthday party-who knew this was a great birthday spot? The room in the back has a great "tree" in center and table w/chairs around it. Parrots were there and entertained us by talking and "dancing." There were glass enclosures that had a chameleon, hedgehog, and a ferret. There was also a possum also just hanging out in the open. Staff gave info on each and kids were able to pet each. We had birthday cake and then ended w/visit from a lemur. The kids had a blast! read more

Every time I come here conditions are worse for the animals Puppies crammed in small spaces. Rodents and rabbits in subpar enclosures. Parrots given little enrichment, all bundling up together in a corner for warmth AND WORST OF ALL they now sell ducks, in these conditions Are you kidding? Does this look like suitable conditions for these ducks? Do they look happy? No. I expect this to be changed (not just a simple water change) or I'll make some calls. It's so sad Polly's used to be a place that cared about their animals, now it's just about the money and what random animals they can make a profit off of I'm writing this as I walk around the store because I'm so horrified. I haven't even gotten to the fish section yet I'm disgusted and very disappointed. Won't be coming here again for purchases, only to keep tabs on the horrible upkeep. Would be MORE than happy to speak to the owners and inform them how to better care for some of their animals and their enclosures since I think they have potential, but doubt I would be heard. Leaving this place with a bad taste in my mouth and an anxious concern for the animals in my heart. I'm appalled that one of my favorite shops has gone downhill so much and hope they change things for the sake of the poor animals EDIT: found that they're selling chicks and baby ducks now. Unbelievable. I doubt they even have the knowledge to care for these babies in their own store, how can they expect to to pass this knowledge on to potential customers? This is a wonderful, incredibly well-stocked store with so many options. My late minipoo had terrible food allergies and couldn't eat normal proteins, so I had to give her something else like lamb, bison. etc. Polly's also has a great variety of treats without proteins in them. Chloe liked best the little peanut butter bites. Perfect size for her little mouth and nothing to exacerbate her allergies. Definitely will keep coming back! read more

Mind you my tank has been running perfectly for a whole year without any fish dying. I will call them to see what they will do to rectify. Amazing birthday party! My son celebrated his 9th birthday at Polly's and it was better than I imagined it could be. We chose the deluxe party and added the snow cone machine. I highly recommend it. The intimate animal experiences and trainers were wonderful. Our group leader Aislen kept everybody occupied and entertained the entire time. It flew by and the kids left fascinated. The kids gift bags were very nice and full of great trinkets. The kids loved it! This is a birthday party they will be talking about for weeks/months to come. read more

I am giving Polly's a one star for hurting my feelings. We saw this beautiful kitten on Saturday but were told that we couldn't get it until it got its shots. We didn't know when that would be. We were told to give them our number but there was 5 people on the call list for these kittens. We had nobodies that they were open Sunday and missed the call. Needless to say we missed out. Called back Monday and was told that the kittens were still available. Rushed over, paid for our kitten and 20 minutes later was told that she was sold. How sad and hurtful is that? Bought 2 beta fishes and both died from fin rot. Tried to treat it but I couldn't save them both. Then also bought 6 guppies from them and the next day they started to drop like flys. When I went to return them they had zero guppies left in the same tank I purchased from. Soo something smells fishy here. :/ read more

How have I not reviewed this place yet! This has got to be one of the most fun pet stores in San Antonio! Honestly it's more like going to a mini zoo or some sort of hybrid, there are so many neat animals to look at, the staff is knowledgeable and friendly, it is just too much fun! it is definitely off the beaten path down Pat Booker off of 1604 going towards the base. When you walk in it looks like a normal old school pet store, I urge you to go directly to your right to begin your adventure around the store. There you will find an entrance to their reptile cave! Full of snakes, lizards but not just your old run of the mill stuff! They have a giant boa constrictor, beautiful iguanas, geckos and everything in between After you exit there, you will go to your right again where you will find their massive aquarium and fish! I have seen moray eels, gigantic cichlids, Oscars and a massive array of saltwater fish that I didn't even know existed LOL Next on the list is they're open bird range, yes it is wide open! There are tocans, parrots and your basic small birds in cages. Across the way they have all kinds of critters like miniature pigs, lemurs, rats and other fun and exciting stuff! If that wasn't enough in the back they have a place for parties where they will bring all kinds of animals to you so you can see them up close and personal! I also have to say, surprisingly, the young lady that help me pick out fish was insanely knowledgeable!! I honestly did not expect that level of knowledge especially since I randomly asked her for help LOL I'm telling you, you could bring your kids here and spend a couple hours just looking at everything! read more

I bought a baby female hedgehog from Polly's the other day. The clerks know nothing about hedgehog care. The enclosure they were in was filthy. There was no food. The sales girl also informed me that they don't need a heat setup in their enclosure. They don't have one in the store, and I don't need one in my home, apparently. FALSE! There were probably twenty babies in one enclosure, male and female together- with one wheel that was tipped over on its side so they couldn't access it anyway. I picked out one baby girl to take home ($300). I wanted to know her age. All the hedgies were different ages, you could tell and the girl said 'we've gotten multiple shipments in and threw them all together so I'll have to ask my manager'. Yeah okay, you do that. The manager glances at the baby in my hand, only maybe 4 inches long, and says 'maybe 4-5 months'. Wow. NO. NO she's not. She's maybe 4-5 weeks. She has a hard time chewing kibble, still a little wobbly, got the baby face look. She's so incredibly tiny. She's smaller than my hand. (I'm a petite 100lb woman) anyway....spent a total of 400$ that day and when I left had to sign a contract that I have 3 days to bring her back if she gets sick- with a vet bill that says she sick and even then, it's up to the owners discretion if they trade her or give me my money back. I L my new baby but I'll never purchase a pet here again knowing how much they really suck. Go somewhere else if you're going to spend that much money. Update: my new baby did end up being sick with a bacterial infection of the gut. She had bloody stools and diarrhea since we brought her home. The vet gave her medication, and she's ok. When I went back to Polly's pets I noticed a few of the hedgehogs had diarrhea in the enclosure she came from. read more

I purchased 6 plants for my aquarium today. There were 28 assassin snails in the plants. I called to tell them they had an assassin snail infestation in their plant tank, they said they are aware. I was not informed the plants would come with these snails, since they knew about it. I have 6 nerites and a mystery snail that I've poured so much time and money and care into. They did not accept the assassin snails back, so I have to kill them. They cannot go into my tank. Some were incredibly small so it's likely that there are more hiding in the substrate. Nothing is being done to remedy this situation, only an "I'm sorry, ma'am." So don't go to Polly's for your aquarium. Just purchase online. They don't care if your snails are eaten or your tank is infested from their products. read more
