This store has a lot in the dry good area and for aquascaping. But there are a ton of things that are not for sale that are on display. If this is a storefront you need to have a few display tanks i understand. But it's often many or almost all of the high quality options on fish/corals/live animals here are never the ones for sale. It is very hard to know what the prices of the livestock are, often having to ask fish by fish what they cost. Staff is nice. read more

What an amazing wonderland for fish! I was a bit skeptical at first because of location, but you walk into an exotic fun aquarium when you walk past the front room! There are so many different kinds of fish! I was able to get my Mother's Day gift here this year! Someone sadly didn't want their large Tiger Oscar. It found a new home with me! I was also able to purchase a large pleco to deal with the algae in our tank. It is clean as a whistle now! After having both fish for a couple of months now, I will gladly buy other fish and products from this location. I will probably be looking at a new filtration system shortly, and this will be my first stop! Prices are very reasonable! People are super friendly! Keyboard warrior here! Do not buy fresh water fish here unless you want dead fish. They are sick and the water is bad(tested the water at home and it read over 100 ppm nitrates). I have over 40 fish and some are considered expert level due to high maintenance and only fish from Saltys have died within a week and once before it even made it into the tank at home. Called the owner and spoke to her personally and she refused to take accountability for it. Blamed it on my water or her vendors. I've spent hundreds there on other items such as decorations for my tank. Unfortunately they have lost my business and I will not be returning. I'd rather go to Petco/PetSmart or shop online. I drove 25 mins and it's my second time going to this place and let me tell you I love the store. The setup the aquariums the lady owner is very kind same as the husband and sons. We purchased a coral beauty and snails. With in 3 days our coal beauty had marine velvet. 4 days later our entire tank was infested. Sadly this one purchase costed us a heavy penny as the one fish or snail infested our other fish that were perfectly fine. Lesson learned we will not be returning as these fish are not cheap! read more

Balcones Heights can keep its "aquarium" of plastic fish, and algae exhibits. The Northeast side has Salty Fish Aquariums with free parking, lots of REAL, LIVE animals, and the best part of it all: most of those fishies are for sale. Imagine you go to that whack aquarium over in Balcones Heights with the family. You see a shrimp swimming through the tank, and your kids are like "Dad! Let's get shrimp like those" and in you're mind, you think to yourself "Yeah, I can use this purchase of these cute crustaceans and salt water tank with all the fixings to get the heat off of me while I think of a way to smooth things over with the wife" (long sentence so bear with me). So-------you think "Bruh, I'd be popular too with all the family because I got some sharks. Yeah let's do it!" but you can't because you went to that whack aquarium over in Balcones Heights. You probably got a red light ticket going through Leon Valley. Save yourself the hurt and some money. Go to Salty Fish Aquariums. You have the following which you won't get at the competitor *looking at you Aquarium on NW side* - lots of good deals on marine life. yes, you can take something home and be the cool person in the area - FREE parking. pfft... it's parking come on - FREE admission. that's just how good they are - knowledgeable staff. they know feeding schedules, which animals go with which, and so on - they have ghost shrimp. read more

Store gets props for the amount of fish species they have. I'm a fan of African Cichlids and they had many. Some of the tanks were beautiful. Ultimately I purchased two Albino Bristlenose Catfish. Prices seemed very fair on both fish and supplies. Employees were very friendly. However the store could have been cleaner. Many of the tanks were empty and dirty. The young man helping me didn't know the parameters of their water. IMHO all LFS employees should know that answer. read more

I went to Salty Fish for the first time this weekend with my family. We are planning to get an aquarium in the near future and had a lot of questions. Terry (the owner) took a lot of time and answered every question I had. He was very informative and really helped me understand everything I needed to know to get started. He was able to break everything down to a basic level for someone with no experience in dealing with saltwater fish. He was very patient and helped me get a great idea of what I want to do. He was never pushy or made me feel like I was wasting his time. We have been to just about every aquarium related store in SA and had the best experience at Salty Fish. All in all it was a great experience and I look forward to returning soon to get started with our new aquarium. This place is fintastic! I'm not even squidding! I'd been herring about this place, and had to stop in and check it out. They offer a wide variety of fresh and salt water fish, including corals! The service is outstanding- they asked a whole bunch of questions about my experience, my tank, my skills with fish, and so on. They were making sure I knew how to handle the fish I was getting to make sure it didn't just end up floating upside down in my tank a few days later. Their tanks are all clean, and the stuff you need to know is all readily available. They also offer all the accessories you need- things like fish tanks, filtration systems, food, tank decorations, they have it all! The prices are quite reasonable, especially considering that many of these fish are hard to find. I've been to a lot of fish stores, and I've got to say, this is the best one around! We have purchased an aquarium, sump, cabinet, other equipment and live stock from Terry. He is very helpful, and informative. Once he talked us through the set up, we were able to bring home our 150 gallon, connect the sump, pumps, heaters, etc; fill our tank; and stock with beautiful discus fish. Was very disappointed on how I was treated. The first time I was there I love it was treated very well and given great advise as to when to add fish and how they would help me along the way. The second time was met with a new guy was extremely rude to me and treated me like I was stupid. First time walking in and I can say I immensely enjoyed it. They had a large variety and I'm looking forward to their amphibian/reptile addition that I was told was coming soon. Not only did I find items that I had only dreaded buying online or venturing out to expos for, but the staff their was very friendly and inquisitive, though I had just stopped by on a whim rather than with a project in mind. I dropped in today for the first time and it is a pretty neat fish store (or atleast it was at one time). Was greeted at the door by the only employee that was there and then that was it. It looked like they were either moving out or closing down?? ALOT of tanks were empty and looked as if they had been like that for a while. There was no freshwater fish except like 2 display tanks but they did have a good selection of corals and some saltwater fish. The store seemed like it was running well at one point but it just looked as if they were closing up shop and it looks very...dead. read more

I was just in the area and decided to stop by. Turned out to be the best local fish store I've ever been to! As a college kid with relatively very little money, I found the prices to be really fair. This is the first store that actually had a multitude of sponge filters for purchase!! Went ahead and picked one up to change up the filtration in my 5gal Betta tank. Also the owners were so friendly and helpful. I was asked an number of times if I needed help, and when I did, they were able to answer all my questions throughly. I will definitely be back. A wonderful experience! Note: they are in the middle of expanding/remodeling so their freshwater section was under construction. Can't wait to see it once it's complete! read more

I went in the store first by myself and talked to the guy who Ownes/Workes at the store and found him not only helpful but friendly as well. Both traits I find uncommon in any hobby related store. A few days later I walked in and he not only remembered me, but he also remembered what I wanted to do. I picked up one filtration device, and he told me about the other two he had on sale. So I walked in looking to purchase one system, but ended up buying 3 for what I was expecting to spend on one. Had he not been listening to what I was doing on my first trip to the store, I would not have new QUIET systems for all three tanks. To be completely fair my mediocre review, I believe according to what yelp is describing the location of this place, as well as the location I visited off of 35, I think I visited this business whilst they were in the process of moving their physical business location. I was not in any need when I visited the store, as I was coming back from running errands and happened to just be in the area, but I wanted to take a look anyways. Although given the name of the store and what not, this store obviously seems to appeal to marine aquarist, but as a freshwater fish aquarist, I decided to take a look at the life stock on hand. I was pretty disappointed when I saw many beautiful fish that were not for sale at the time I went. My main pride and joy is copies, and the store was full of amazing got these. Unfortunately, at the time they were not for sale. I was slightly annoyed at this, seeing as how some people are very adamant puppy breeders, and showcase their guppies off in ways that imply they are for sale. It was a turnoff to me, as I really wanted to buy some of the guppies that were on display, but were listed as not for sale. I had wrote a review about this prior on Facebook, before I deleted my facebook account, and I will say though, that whoever runs the Facebook page was able to respond to me quite promptly and informed me that the tanks we're being cycled, and therefore the fish were not for sale at the moment. This leads me to believe that this place really does care about the health of the fish, as well as the happiness of their customers, as well as their loyalty to returning to the store. As a guppy enthusiast, there have been many stores, even local fish stores, that I have crossed off my list due to the low health quality of their guppy livestock, near impossible return policies, and just general disappointment of the fish dying within only a few days are a few months. The guppies I saw at this particular store, salty, were extremely pretty and I would love to add them to one of my tanks. When I do have more free time, I would love to give the store a chance, and bring a few copies home to my beloved guppy tank. Although my concern about the not for sale issue was addressed promptly. I do wish that there were more accurate signs in the store explaining as to why something maybe not for sale, as well as an expected date to come back. I have not taking the time to come back to the stores yet. Do solar to it being a pain in the ass to drive there from where I live, and also because I am Not sure if the Gulf use will still be not for sale. Other than the vague descriptions of why the Guppies we're not for sale, and maybe if I honestly clueless worker that happened to be there that day, that may just not have innocently known about puppies, this store had a ton of fish food and a great selection of other tank care products. Anyone from San Antonio can tell you that traveling is a huge pain in the ass on our poorly designed highways, so planning out what fish stores you want to go to, is actually a pretty big deal. I wouldn't off the bat not recommend this door to anyone, but I will certainly recommend them to call ahead to make sure the livestock they are planning on getting are able to be for sale. Other than that, this seems like a very lovely store. read more
