While the personnel is great I wouldn't recommend purchasing any big equipment from Aquarium Designs. I purchased a Coralife Aquarium 1/6 Horsepower chiller for $897.00, which after comping Petco and other Pet Supply stores found our that for a 1/6 HP chiller, this one was about $250-$300 overpriced. This chiller was used for a DIY cold plunge, to be very transparent. It was used with a 100 gallon stock tank with no more than 50-60 gallons of water being chilled. It was inside and insulated. The chiller worked however would not hold the temp desired. Upon calling and asking about the return policy, I was told that they do not accept returns on equipment. No one at the store informed me of this prior to purchase, it is not on the receipt. Jason (the owner)not present when I purchased this, but did speak with me when I called to inquire. He advised he would've told me that prior to purchase, but that doesn't help out now. He did offer to switch out for a stronger but used chiller. The only problem with the swap is that the new chillers was a 220v which would've required me to hire and electrician and run a new outlet. The fact this this chiller is less than a week old, and there's no return policy is hard to swallow. I am out over $1000.00 total, and there's nothing that can be done. I feel that a full refund should be given as it was never disclosed or mentioned anywhere l. This is not a review of the personnel or store overall, this a review of my experience with a policy that was never told to me. I'm sure the everyday Aquarium enthusiast would appreciate this store, and the people working there. They are all great! However, being out over $1000.00 is not great, and doesn't still well with me. Had I known there was no return policy, I would've looked elsewhere or bought a higher horsepower chiller for cheaper elsewhere, but like to support local businesses here in the San Antonio area....sadly......this experience has driven me to reconsider Aquarium Designs. read more

I love this place! Their tanks are always clean, their fish always look healthy and they take your safety seriously, especially during COVID. If you're one to leave your mask under your nose and think wearing masks is a joke don't come here because they not only make sure you're wearing your mask correctly they make you sanitize you're hands and shoes before entry. Personally I am grateful because I have asthma making me high risk if I contract COVID. Also, the hand sanitizer is not the cheap, smells like vodka, type of sanitizer, it is very refreshing and I quite enjoyed the smell on my hands They're very knowledgeable and do their best to help you with your individual needs. It is a small store and to some it will feel cramped but it's perfect for me because I can quickly see all the fish they have for sale and not be overwhelmed by tons of tanks, did I mention their tanks are CLEAN and very aesthetic? We just recently bought a home with a pond and it needed TLC. Our poor Koi were swimming in filth with an old beat up filter system. We came here and Jason was awesome. He was very kind and knowledgeable. He was even available by text. We bought a new system and he gave us tips to restore the old system as well. This will be our go to place for our pond needs. Best saltwater store in the San Antonio area! My husband & I are starting a saltwater aquarium. Jason & the staff have been such a great help and have patience with all of our questions. They really care about their fish! For saltwater they have a date of when they get them in & a check mark next to the name of the fish once they know they have confirmed they are healthy & good to go. I LOVE THAT! Other stores are just out there to sell sell sell. These guys will tell you if the fish will get along with the others you have in your tank and if they are difficult to keep or eat the coral. I've been to quite a few aquarium shops in town, personally I love this one. They have great personalities, great selections, and are helpful with advise and setting up tanks. They are a small team, so they can get pretty busy, which makes it difficult to get that advice if that's the expectation you have. By far the best fish store in San Antonio. Everything I've bought (about 75% of wjatbyoubsee in the pictures) from them pver the past 12 months has stayed alive, from fish to corals, and I nothing has brought along any parasites or diseases. When you walk in you will instantly see that they take better care of their livestock just by seeing how clean everything is, compared with other stores. I highly reccomend this place to everyone, even if you have to drive further....it's worth preventing any issues you will bring back to your tank from some other stores. read more

Hello I went to Aquarium Designs for some fresh water fish. I was pleased to deal with the owner Jason who found a solution to my issue. I had a fish not make the trip back to Austin , I did bring the fish back to him the next day and Jason replaced the fish for me. There policy is 50 percent back ONLY store credit. But he still backed up his product. I may of taken to long on the trip back home. He did advise me he would eat the cost of the lost fish and to please take it home ASAP. I did and the fish are doing well and I do plan on being a life customer. The African Cichlids I purchased are the biggest around. Every fish, coral and invert that I have bought from Aquarium Designs have been healthy, but that is not what makes me truly dig this store... It is the corals and fish that they have not sold me that make me really love to come here. On more than one occasion I had my eye on a fish or coral, then when I talked to the staff and told them what I have in my tank they recommended against that particular fish or coral. If they wanted to make a quick sale they could have just grabbed the "item" and sold it to me, but instead their stock are actual creatures to the staff. They care about the lives that they have in their store and want to make sure that they are going to have a healthy life. This is not just a feel good thing, it translates into great advice for the aquarist and makes for a wonderful vibrant and healthy tank at home. read more

My husband LOVES salt water fish, and convinced me a few months ago to start my own seahorse tank. Absolutely satisfied with Aquarium designs. I am a first time salt aquarist and I had so many employees walking up and answering my questions. They get fish from local customers sometimes and the fish are super healthy and hardy. They have great deals in aquariums but charge a little more on fish and reef. Although their stock is great. Its just a small shop and you dont have a lot of room but who needs room when there is great stuff everywhere. Definite eye candy everywhere. Its so hard to figure out which direction to go with my tank now. My wife and kids had a blast. Only complaint is there isnt much parking but that isnt their fault. They have rays, sharks, eels, an octopus, and amazing reef livestock. I will definitely be back. read more

I had been looking around for a fire belly newt here in SA and was not having much luck. I had called one day to see if they had them by some odd chance (because they are mainly a saltwater fish store) and one of the staff members said they were out but would order some for me. Throughout the whole process the staff called me to keep me informed about when they ordered some and also when they were expected to arrive. They even called me the same day they arrived at the store for me to pick my little guy up. I ended up getting a tiny happy little newt, who ate on the first day i brought him home. I just recently bought a 1000 dollar complete fish tank from planet aquarium. Apparently due to increased buisness planet aquarium could not respond to my numerous e-mails so i took it upon myself to figure out what was going on with a gurgling sound in my overflow box. Soo i aproached aquarium designs with my problem. The employee by the name of lauren went above and beyond to help me with my problem by contacting planet aquarium (still no response) and other outlets to solve my problem. This is a great store. Employees greet you within a few seconds of walking in. Supplies are plentiful, so if you're looking for supplies to build an aquarium they'll have you covered. Would've given 5 stars but was treated rudely by an employee. I think they take really good care of their fish and offer very healthy ones. I also think the staff is very knowledgable about saltwater fish (which is what I own). There's a female at the store who seems really unhappy to work there, though. She was very short with her answers to me and almost seemed like she didn't trust me with any fish they sold. I've had fish for years and have multiple successfully running reef tanks, yet she was sarcastic with me when I asked for her to get me one of the fish they were selling and seemed to doubt my ability to care for them. I heard from another customer that I know that he had the same issue with her. Maybe she was just having rough days, I don't know. Either way, the store is great, I just know if it wasn't for the other employees they would've lost my business there due to her. read more
