Deadlift/squat area with safety bars with nice cutout for 2.5 lb weights, plus a pivot for pivot presses and the like

Clean, spacious, and very well-stocked gym with a wide selection of equipment (they even have Persian "meel" or "Indian clubs" which look like big bowling pins and are used to train strength and mobility; like ancient kettlebells). They make good use of their space and you can always find a spot to lift safely. I mainly powerlift and appreciate the full cage, half cage with safeties, and deadlift platform. The benches also have safeties, which is lovely for trying for a personal record without a spotter. Speaking of spotters, staff has always been friendly and helpful as well. They have actually spotted me before in the days before all of the benches had safety bars on them. That also brings up another point. They are constantly striving to improve the gym, whether it's new equipment or more efficient arrangement of the space. It feels safe and efficient (door has a code). The other patrons are also considerate, wiping down equipment, making sure weights get put away, etc. My only criticisms are that it can get a *bit* hot when it's hot out (though the fans do well to combat the heat generally), I wish the second treadmill didn't squeak as much as it does, and I wish they had a second elliptical, but other than those minor nitpicks, this is an excellent gym. While part of me wishes it would stay a hidden gym, I also know that they need more members to survive and thrive, so you should all buy memberships. Only show up a little bit though, haha.

    ROOMY!

Love this place! Nice environment. Nice establishment. Uncrowded. Fair pricing. Nice owner.

Hands down, your best local gym with a friendly neighborhood feel. Everyone is super chill and friendly. Ownership takes great care of their clients by constantly improving the layout of the gym and furnishing new equipment. (Polo built the Olympic weightlifting platforms and jerk blocks with his own two hands! There's seriously something special about using homemade equipment- you can feel the dedication and love that goes into it!) They have just about everything you could find in a crossfit gym too, if you're into that! Oakland Strength Factory is my best kept secret... it gets busy-ish around 6pm but throughout the day it's fairly empty. If you want a non-intimidating, friendly, and clean gym without the crowds- OSF is now your secret too.

    They have classes now!

I am visiting for one month in Oakland, are the membership fees by days/weeks/month?

Is this a gym with trainers only or can you come in and train by yourself?

As someone new to CrossFit, I found James to be a great coach -- patient, attentive, and focused on proper form. He gave helpful adjustments and kept the class moving at a good pace. I'd definitely consider coming back once my wrist heals. I did have a small billing issue that took a little time to sort out, but James ultimately took care of it. It's clear they're a small business doing their best, and I appreciate that. I'm glad to support a local gym that offers solid coaching and a welcoming community.

Pacific Strength is truly something special…read more I am not a lifter and walked in feeling genuinely intimidated by a functional fitness gym environment. That fear disappeared almost immediately. The instructors (Jessica, Zach, Makenna, James, and others!) are kind, attentive, and incredibly good at meeting you exactly where you are -- no ego, no pressure, just thoughtful coaching and encouragement. James, the owner, is a wonderful human. He sets the tone for the entire space: supportive, inclusive, and deeply invested in people's progress and well-being. The community reflects that -- the patrons are welcoming and encouraging, and there's absolutely no judgment. I'm more of a yoga and Pilates person, but I knew I needed to incorporate strength training for long-term health. Since coming here, I've gotten noticeably stronger, improved my range of motion, developed better form, and -- most importantly -- gained confidence with weightlifting. No one cares that I lift a fraction of the weight others do. Everyone is focused on their own progress, and there's always a way to scale or modify. This is an ideal gym even if you're not looking to become an Olympic weightlifter but are looking to maintain muscle, protect bone density, move better, and feel strong -- especially for women who want functional strength without intimidation. Pacific Strength proves that strength training can be empowering, accessible, and genuinely enjoyable. I can't recommend it enough.

The members and staff are incredibly welcoming and treat each other with love and respect. If you need a spot, help learning an exercise or just have questions about fitness in general, there is usually someone there with the knowledge and willingness to help. You will never have to wait for equipment like at a commercial gym. The gym is open 24/7. The equipment is constantly being updated and there are always new toys to play with. It is clear that the owners care about the gym and constantly invest in it. I've been in the powerlifting community for over a decade and can say with absolute certainty that if you're looking for a gym to join, I would absolutely 100% recommend this one!

Lemme just start by saying that if you're looking for a gym in the bay, steer clear. I checked this…read morespot out based on the reviews and some recs, but I legit had to do a double take because what I heard and what I saw were completely different. Equipment: If stuff isn't broken or bent, it just isn't there. I've seen gyms with half the space have more kilos and power bars available. Not to mention they have an entire area dedicated to machines that look like they only get used when the cleaners dust them off. I heard the owners have been promising more stuff, but nothing's come except a small ah set of plates. Facilities: Bathroom was straight up vile with a busted toilet seat. Floors are legit slimy, and I saw maybe two people tops wipe off their equipment. I asked some of the other members if the gym ever brings in a maintenance crew to clean the place down, but they told me the cleaning is done by like a family and kids LMAO Management: Day-to-day is run by this dude named Jostin (Justin?), but outside of my first visit I barely saw the man. Bro is either not at the gym or locked up in the back office. Only time I remember seeing him was when his doordash arrived. The other owners are barely in too, and I heard the main dude isn't even in state anymore??? Cost: Game time. Based on what I've said, guess how much they ask for a month. Two-fn-hundred without a contract, 150 for a 6 month. Place thinks is premium-premium but is giving vibes that make 24 look like Equinox. The members must love burning cash because they could do so much better for much less

250 classes today!!! :-)…read more I joined in November '23, and it's been quite a journey. Day by day, week by week, month by month, I have seen incredible progress. The way the classes and challenges are set up constantly shows your progress. Much of my transformation is also because of the coaches [Elliot, Jon, Mel, & Sonia]. They are there to answer any questions you have (and I have too many) and are always up for a discussion. They are patient, have high energy, and will go above & beyond to see you succeed. I love the office staff; they are also invested in your success & cheer you on at every step. I love OTF Montclair, and I cannot thank them enough. I can't wait to update this review with a photo of my 1000-class sign.

(For the record, a traffic light was down along my route, so that plus parking caused delay.) I've never been six minutes late before, so maybe a one-time warning could have been more constructive? Management, please do some introspection (and read the other reviews about you -- there's a steady drip of mumblings among the membership about your unreasonable policies and inflexibility). Y'all need to have more empathy for your community members who have busy lives and pay good money to be here. I've been loyal to OTF for nearly 10 years, but I'm going to have to look into the new, non-OTF gym that opened closer to my house. It's officially time for a change!
