Great person (Joel) and place (Polyface Farm). I heard about this place via the aforementioned Pollan book, and took my family for the "Lunatic Tour". I'm glad that I did. What a great way to spend a Thursday afternoon in Autumn. Joel and one of his summer interns drove two tractors up the farm road, pulling trailers of tourists sitting on hay bales, and demonstrating pastured pigs, movable chicken coops, salad bar beef and the egg mobile (or whatever he calls it). Super great tour. Biodiversity is alive and well at Polyface. I really appreciate Joel's personality. He's not arrogant, but he has opinions. He's open and honest, and happy to answer any and all questions. Another great thing about Joel is that he's a living testament to his lifestyle -- hard physical work and a good diet will keep you young for a long time. One note: while you can definitely bring your young children, two hours is a long time for a three year old to have to pay attention to an adult talk about photosynthesis and cow days per acre. I ended up having to entertain my daughter to prevent any sort of public meltdown, and thereby missed portions of Joel's sermon, I mean tour.

Forest-finished "Pigerator-pork" chops being prepared for recipe. Hands-down, best pork I've ever had in my life.

One of the few farms in America that does things right. You will find the highest quality products here, and I cannot recommend them more.

FIVE STAR STAY WITH THIS HARVEST HOST…read more This place was awesome. Hosts Janis & John were so welcoming. From their Alpaca Farm there are views of rolling farmland and mountains. They have tons of adorable Alpacas all with their own creative names and personalities to match! There's a lovely store where you can purchase hand spun alpaca yarn as well as assorted handmade item from both their own alpacas as well as lots of unique items imported from Peru. Things like hats, gloves, socks, sweaters, barn vests and throws just to name a few. As an avid knitter I was so excited to purchase some of their beautiful hand spun yarn. We also picked up a few pairs of socks made from alpaca that have even better wicking quality than merino wool. Perfect for hiking! Keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter! They have a lovely porch with comfortable chairs that you can sit and watch the sun set over the mountains. At night we left our windows open and enjoyed the peace and quiet. The only sound was the occasional alerts of their guard dogs ensuring their alpacas are kept safe. Both Janis & John were lovely. We very much enjoyed chatting with them. We will def be back!

We bought a few interesting gifts in her store that you could not find elsewhere. Perfect for those "hard to buy for" people! A lot of the items are made from the fiber of her alpacas. The views on her farm are simply beautiful.

The blackberry is my favorite, but also loved the pumpkin flavor in the fall. One of my favorite places to visit! Such a beautiful setting to enjoy a cup or cone - and a great spot for berry picking too! Recommend checking their instagram for information on what they're serving and/or picking at that time.

This review is for picking your own strawberries…read more *No reservations needed, even during COVID times, which was a relief especially since I hadn't planned this activity. I had just driven by the farm with their giant "pick your own strawberries" sign, and decided to do this in between wine/beer tastings along Nelson 151. *Pick your own strawberries for $3.49 a pound. Apparently you can bring your own container for picking, but they do provide white buckets. *I picked strawberries from Patch #1 which faces the road, but there's more patches in the back, which I wish I'd checked out, because I suspect a lot of people go to Patch #1. So I'd encourage you to be aware of Patches #2-6. *There are portapotties and an outdoor sink set up with soap and paper towels. *They have a small market with some McCutcheon products, strawberries for sale, asparagus, and ice cream in pints. I had a cup of their delicious strawberry ice cream afterward. There are picnic tables scattered under tents where you can enjoy your ice cream (much appreciated shade after strawberry picking under the hot sun).

The wine tasting was nice. With large parties you are given a flight to try. No need to stand in the tasting room. I liked several of the flavors. After the tasting we took a walk around the grounds taking in all the animals. Because it was winter, we didn't spend a lot of time in the lavender fields. We did however visit the lavender shop. I purchased a lavender honey spot and some delightful lemon crunch lavender ice cream. Overall staff were friendly. I would recommend this business for anyone in the area or visiting massanutten.

You really get to enjoy an immersive, interactive experience on the farm. There is something for everyone, from interactive gardens and live animals. The best for a cute little DIY wine tasting. You can bring your own charcuterie platters, which is what we did to go along with our tastings. They have tasting room called the Purple Wolf Vineyard where you can purchase your portable tastings, wine, beer and slushy flights . I would definitely return again, great place to host a cute birthday event, with your friends. They also have a really nice gift shop as well.
