For a Mexican place in northern MI, pretty good quality Mexican food. The complimentary salsa is refreshing with the homemade golden brown tortilla chips. If I went back I would get a combo to try all the different fare such as tamales, plablanos, and enchiladas, but for this trip I got the Cali burrito. I know, not exactly authentic, but it was filled with rice, delicious steak, guac, sour cream, chorizo, etc. it was covered in queso as well. I would prefer verde, but they forgot it. It's worth a bit of a drive to Alpena if you're in the surrounding area for a decent restaurant in the area! I will be back. read more

Yummy. Went for lunch. Staff was pleasant and efficient. Had the chicken fajita salad which was delicious - great grilled flavor of peppers and onions really made the salad. The chicken tortilla soup was not for me since I'm not into rice but my dining partner loved it. The tortilla chips were warm and tasted fresh. The view of the beach was awesome. Superb Mexican food! The Shrimp Cocktail is to die for - a very generous amount of large tender cocktail shrimp and chunks of avocado swimming in a tall glass of gazpacho perfectly seasoned with cilantro and chili peppers! The chili poblanos are wonderful topped melted queso cheese and the carnitas soft tacos are .... well all I can say is be sure to visit Pompeyos! You will leave a happy camper! Drove to Alpena from Greenbush. My husband and I settled for this place. I called to see if they were open beforehand and they didn't answer the phone. The parking lot was crowded so we figured we'd give it a try since we both love Mexican food. Upon entering the restaurant, it looked clean and inviting yet the hostess didn't reciprocate that same energy. The entire time we stood there, not once did she say "welcome. How many to be seated?" No acknowledgement at all. We had to wait for one of the servers that happened to be walking by to ask. First red flag. We sat down and didn't get water or salsa and chips for about 15 minutes. The waitress was running like a chicken with her head cut off while trying to keep up with the hustle and bustle. Once we finally got our drinks and chips, I felt better. The chips were warm and flavorful. I ordered the tacos and enchiladas combo. We also ordered the chorizo and cheese appetizer. It took a while for the tortillas to come but it was delicious. I got my food but the waitress came back and said she accidentally deleted my husband's fajita order and it would take a bit longer. Once his food came, he commented that those were the best fajitas he had in a while. Overall the experience was meh, to me. Good food but the service needs to be better. read more

We had a party of six there for dinner yesterday. Service was quick and our server was delightful! All our orders were correct. Food is delicious! Come hungry, portions are quite large! I would certainly go back! Hopefully next time they will have liquor and we can have a margarita with our meal. For my daughters 21st bday I researched the best food with the most comfortable space in all of Alpena. I knew it might be a challenge with so many places just opening due to the pandemic. Surprisingly there are only 3 places with a lakeside view in all of Alpena and we lucked out big time by coming here. We got seated in a big booth overlooking massive Lake Huron. We all had fajitas that came sizzling hot and were amazing! Mojitos and pina coladas were delish and tasted like the kind straight out of Mexico. Our waitress was so friendly and helpful. Chips and salsa were fresh and on par. I heard it can get busy in the warmer months but I would say it is well worth the wait! Can't wait to return. read more

Awful. Worst Mexican food experience I can remember. Service was terrible, server said she needed to see my menu because she couldn't spell chimichanga. The chimi was a soggy burrito, not fried, and it was lukewarm. It didn't come out with any of the rice, beans, lettuce, sour cream, etc. those came 10 minutes later, after I was done. I've eaten here 3 times.... each experience was great. Food is awesome, really love the Fajitas, they are truly sizzling fajitas, full of flavor. The staff is awesome, owner Chris goes the extra mile to ensure the best experience possible; tables are clean and well appointed, orders are taken professionally, the chips and salsa are on the table immediately and drinks are out pronto! Restrooms are clean and the overall appearance of the place is immaculate. In the small town of Alpena, there are only two great places to eat; here and John A. Lau. Everywhere else is just playing catch up. The view of Lake Huron is awesome and seating outside too! Actually saw an iceberg while in here in January. Of course, it was 8 below. read more

Walked in and the hostess had to be reminded to wear her mask by a waitress. Please keep in mind we are in Michigan where it is LEGALLY mandated to wear your mask inside. Staff were either not wearing masks or not wearing them correctly. Felt somewhat unsafe due to that. We were seated outside (party of 2) and sat there for 15-20 minutes without any waitress coming to introduce herself or talk to us. If I could give a -1 I would. I hate to write this review because it embarrasses me for being such a wimp. I went to Pompeyos (formerly my favorite Mexican on the Sunrise Side on my birthday - March 1, 2023.) I discovered an odd piece of something in my beans. My waitress initially tried to pass it off as a piece of shredded beef from the fryer caught in my (I know, inauthentic) chimichanga. I explained that the offending item was not in the chimi but in the rice. I showed her that this 1" object had a carapace and looked like a leg of some sort. (It was, of course from a cockroach.) I assumed that the restaurant would acknowledge this incredible lapse and apologize. (Beef shreds do NOT have a carapace, which I had demonstrated to the waitress.) Pompeyos doubled down that it was a piece of shredded beef. They offered me a new meal to take home (I had lost my appetite after eating about 1/3 of the meal) but no discount or comped meal. I refused that and asked for only beans and rice to take home - a test. Also failed. It has been 4 days and 1. I am such an idiot for not taking pictures of the critter carapaces and not absolutely calling the restaurant out on the insects in the food and not getting a receipt for my meal, so I cannot prove that I was ever there. I will say, that I went to the restaurant on Wednesday, 1 March, 2023 around 1:30 pm after a doc appointment. I live about 45 minutes from Alpena and have no reason to disparage a restaurant there. I will never, ever go there again. Someone asked me just today to go to the other Mexican place as a late birthday meal and I am sorry to say I could not do that, though Mango's has never let me down. It will be a while before I can eat in ANY restaurant again. Sad. read more

I really like Pompeyos! Have a lake house up here in northern Michigan (Hubbard Lake) and Alpena is about 30 minutes away. Been frequenting Pompeyos since spring of 2019 and throughout the summer. Clean inside and out. The outdoor deck over looking Lake Huron is really cool and sets a great mood on those nice weather days. Service is great. The server's are always very friendly and aim to please each time I've been here. The jumbo margarita's are absolutely delish and not a bad deal at all and not expensive at all (I think $6.00?) Chips and salsa are very good!! Of the 5-6 times I've been here the food is always awesome, no matter what I order and my family has said the same of their dishes ordered. It's odd though, every time I've been here they are never busy with only a few guests in the place. Everything is very reasonably priced, even feeding a family of four and ordering some cocktails. I definitely recommend as this really is one of my fav Mexican spots to eat. read more

Had dinner here before the fireworks. Considering the issues affecting most restaurants including staff shortages and supply shortages the experience wants very good. We had a little longer than normal wait however once seated the Chile's and salsa was great and food and drinks came very quickly and tasted great and the service by Brooke and Chris was incredible. It continues to be a huge disappointment, all of the people choosing to live off of government subsidies rather than work for a living. This restaurant could have served 3x customers/meals with more staffing. Highly recommend this restaurant whenever in Alpena. read more

We stopped in on Father's Day. I had the best meal I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. Everything was well-seasoned and flavorful. Margaritas were great! The cheese sauce is something special. First time for us to eat here. Service was great, order came fast, large portions, more than we could eat! Ordered a half order of Pompeyos Beef Nacho's and that was a plate full! Also ordered the sampler which is huge. This would be an excellent place to come back to again but they will have to change the beef and chicken that they use before we do. While I am not sure, I am guessing that they are out of a can. The flavor and consistency makes me think this, they were mushy and had a different flavor that one would expect from fresh meat. Fresh meat would make a huge difference in the quality of what we had. Gave three stars for an A-OK as I think with this change made they would be spot on! read more
