Definitely a 5 star diner as is evidenced by the wait that is always there no matter when we go. But it is worth the wait. We have been going here for years for breakfast, lunch and dinner and all meals are always fresh, delicious and served promptly. All of their soups are delicious. Been coming here since I moved to the area. About 25 years. Sometimes the wait can be a little extensive but when you're the best diner around what can you expect. The food is consistently good. They are quick to bring the food out. Waitresses and waiters are always friendly and attentive. You don't think drinks when you go to a diner but they have top-shelf alcohol 4 incredibly reasonable prices. I had a Tito's martini. I think I paid something like $9. I can't believe that this place is practically getting a five star review. I decided to try it for the first time based on all of the extremely positive reviews. It was really packed when we arrived (Tuesday at lunch time). We waited a few minutes before we were seated. The waitress acted busy and kept telling us "just a minute" so we waited with no problem. As she was about to take our order an older couple who eat there "4 to 5 days a week" (we could overhear them) caught her attention. She quickly took our order so she could return to the regulars ASAP. We ordered nachos as a starter. My GF got a chicken pesto sandwich and I got a burger for lunch. We were hungry and ready to eat . . . but nothing happened for a really long time once we placed our order. At one point we saw the waitress coming with some plates in hand, but they were for the older couple of "regulars" who were behind us and who had ordered AFTER we did. A few minutes later the nachos finally came out. They were pretty awful. They looked sloppy and unappetizing. They had obviously been sitting on the pass or whatever for a while before we got them because they were cold and the cheese had congealed. Gross. Worst restaurant move ever . . . about two minutes after coming out with the gross nachos she brought out our entrees. The burger and sandwich were fine, but really nothing big deal. After we finished it took another eternity before the plates were taken away and the waitress finally brought us the check. There was no excuse for this because by now the place was no longer busy and even the old couple left. A pretty miserable experience and no reason to go back. I am traveling for business from Philly and had to pick a place to dine alone. My hotel clerk said that Pompton Queen is worth it even if you're alone so I took a shot tonight and drove to see the fuss. My waitress was super nice, the place runs like a clock. This diner IS the best in NJ- hands down. You can taste the love in the food. I got norwegian salmon over salad and it was fresh, perfect, and HUGE. The soup was homemade and tasty. I didn't get to have any of their desserts but from what I saw, they were the stuff of dreams. Piled high, gorgeous, and inviting. I will definitely come back and it is worth the drive. read more

I've been loving the Pompton Queen for 15+ years now. The one owner knows my family and I because we used to come here weekly when I was in HS/middle school. Good menu and excellent quality in food. Generous portions as well. The service is always friendly and fast. This is by far the best diner I've ever been to and it sure will take something spectacular to come along in order to change my mind. I would have given Pompton Queen 5 stars a few years ago but now it's a 4.5 star rating to me. I didn't bum it up for a few reasons.. -their dinner entrees used to come with a soup AND salad. Now its either or. I get this is pretty standard practice for a diner but beings that they used to offer both and now only offer one or the other is kind of a bummer. I'll get over it. -they took shrimp salad off their menu! I personally never ordered it but both my sisters loved their shrimp salad wraps.....why did you guys remove it from the menu?! Get it back!! -their one hostess was kind of rude to me when I walked in for a table. I'm 26 years old but could pass for a teenager and that's how I was treated. Kinda pushed off to the side and didn't take me seriously when asking for a table. I didn't appreciate it. I miss the other woman that used to work there for years. She was such a sweetheart. Seeing a smile when you first walk in definitely helps any establishment in the restaurant business. Everything here is great. I've never been disappointed. I usually get the Godfather omelette, Caesar salad, disco fries, fried green beans, blueberry our ala mode.. My fiancé always experiments when we go here, it's always a safe bet. I recently moved away from the area and I've been looking for a new diner. Before we moved the PQ was our go to spot, we'd be there a minimum of once a week, I recall visiting everyday one week.. It was a little extreme.. Nothing compares to the PQ. As soon as we pulled into the parking lot, two born NYers who know and love good diners, we knew we made a good choice. Large spacious interior with requisite diner table/ booth / counter seating. There was a display case of mouth watering desserts waiting to greet us. Service was quick, attentive, and friendly. Our waitress was on her A-game, the hostess made rounds to check in on us, and the bussers were quick to refill water and clear dishes. Food was exactly what I hoped for. I had the grilled chicken sandwich off the specials menu. $9.95 for a generous piece of grilled chicken breast (cooked perfectly with flavor, grill marks, and still juicy), roasted peppers, avocado and mozzarella on a whole wheat bun... All served with pickle, cole slaw and side salad. Yes it was intended to come with fries, but they let me substitute with no issues. The sandwich was generous in every way. There was plenty of avocado and peppers which many places tend to skimp on. The cole slaw was amazing without being super drowned in mayo. My dining partner of the day had an omelette that looked amazing with a side of home fries. He said it was perfect and exactly what he wanted. If you are driving by, stop in. You will not be disappointed. Grew up in town and moved away. Came to visit recently and ended up there twice. Once for lunch and then for dinner.. Food quality is way above average for diner fare. Vegetables are fresh and portions are huge. The have something for everyone. The club sandwich is insanely huge with thick, fresh sliced roasted turkey. The onion rings are great. Ordered a hamburger that was amazing.Breakfast was killer. The menu is pretty big from pancakes to burgers, salads, to veal parmigiana and everything in between that your heart desires. The food tastes delicious every time and the portions are more than generous! We live about 25 minutes away, so it's not our local diner, but we try to go once every 2 weeks and the staff treats us as if we are regulars. We have never had a bad meal and consider it to be the best diner in NJ, by far. Very bad service. I went there yesterday September 2, @ 3:45 pm; the place wasn't busy at all. We ordered nachos for 2; a turkey triple decker. The food took 40 minutes to come out. Our waitress forgot to bring extra plates for the nachos, no sour cream, (I had to ask for it). Turnkey club had no mayonnaise!!!!!! HELLOOOOO! What the hell? Nachos for two?, no, that was just nachos on a plate enough for one person. Our drinks took about 10 minutes to come out; got refilled once. Then I ordered a cheeseburger deluxe to go for my son. Coffee came out in 5 minutes and we had to ask for water again after 10. Server told us she'd get around to it. Malibu omelette and mushroom and cheese omelette were dry and way over cooked. Now I've been to my fair share of Diners throughout my life, and what I mostly go to Diners for is a French Dip and Disco fries. When I do place my orders I expect my French Dip bread to have a bit of a crunch to it as well as the ability to absorb the gravy. I also expect for the cheese on my disco fries to arrive at my table with the gravy included and to be popping hot so that the cheese is still gooey.
