Montville, NJ - a packed restaurant full of locals at dinner hour is always a promising sign, and we rolled in on a Thursday evening around 7 to find ourselves miraculously sliding into the last two parking spots AND the only open table, woot! [Blowing on my nails.] The menu is a mix of American comfort food and gastropub classics, but with flair, and has a bit of everything to satisfy different palates. Our eyes were probably bigger than our stomachs as we ordered 2 apps, 2 entrees, and 2 cocktails, and it was an enormous amount of food. The portions are definitely what you'd call hearty, and everything was very tasty. Thursdays are all day happy hour so we picked the fried calamari appetizer at the HH price (still a full and generous plate and didn't seem like a downsized version) which were tender and well-battered, as well as the hot honey wings which were meaty and substantial. The short rib parpadelle with housemade pasta and a perfectly medium-rare, well seasoned hanger steak with truffle fries completed our satisfying and belly-stuffing meal. The cocktails are serious as well - the presence of a drink with egg white is my personal litmus test for a bar that knows what it's doing, so the Thyme to Bloom special had my name on it. What a gem! The hot honey wings are honestly maybe the best wings I have had in my life, and that's saying something. The homemade pasta is fire. We got the bolognese and it was outstanding. The interior is modern and rustic with high ceilings, barn rafters, wooden furniture, and a sleek bar area. They have regular tables, high top tables, and booth-style seating along one wall. Probably eat here 6 to 8 times a year. I want to like it and support local , privately owned businesses, especially in the food space. However , always an issue . This time main course and appetizers arrived essentially the same time. Should not happen in a restaurant open this long. I had a burger and it was extremely over salted. Came here the other night to try something new while still staying close to home. Sat at the bar and we were immediately welcomed! The bartender was super nice. We ordered the spiked calamari from the specials menu and the shrimp with shishito peppers. I was hesitant about both but they were oddly good. The spike calamari had calamari olives and hot peppers. First of all I'd give this place a second chance. Family and I were in the area for some basketball games. Came on a busy Saturday night but was able to get a reservation on yelp which is a huge positive. Walked in for the first time to a small hoppin place with only our table open. 2 kids, two adults. Unfortunately it was a little sub par. Pasta overcooked and the "sauce" was too buttery and really had no flavor. Also a bit broken. Fresh pasta is tough, 10 seconds too long and its mush. Wife ordered the French onion soup, just didn't have depth. Onions were not caramelized just sautéed. And they used chicken stock and not beef. So it was on the lighter side. She also got the Prosuitto and Fig flatbread. It was extremely crispy. More like a cracker than a flatbread. Flavor was great just not much body. The bar was full and they have a full supply of craft beer on tap and craft cocktails on the menu. Love the vibe though. read more

I wasn't sure what to expect given the fact that we'd last been here when it was Poor Henry's, but had heard gods things and wanted a casual family lunch after church on a Sunday. What I liked: - the overall vibe was great. Large, open environment that was clean and bright. Very inviting. - good spot for a bar loving crowd or a family. We weren't the only ones with kids. And they had crayons and menus that cater to kids. -the staff was amazing and friendly. We loved our waitress - there were some drink specials because of the fact it was football Sunday. Generally speaking prices are moderate. I wasn't seeing any specials that blew me away. The food was ok, but can't say there was one food item that is a must have. The bar takes up one side of the restaurant with the other side being seating - it's casual but trendy though a bit loud. Service was decent throughout. Large wine, craft beer, and cocktail menu which was great. Super kids friendly with a large variety of kid entree options for $12 including a drink. Crayons and coloring pages galore. They were even nice enough to cut the burger in half for them as my kids were splitting it. I tried the chicken tacos ($18) which was delicious and had a good helping of avocado. We stopped for lunch at this restaurant that used to be Poor Henry's. We had frequented Poor Henrys a lot years ago when I worked locally. Place is beautifully renovated and bright inside but a small suggestion would be adding comfy chairs as all are wooden. Our server was delightful and very attentive and we loved the specials; the lamb burger and the meatball parmesan and both were nice portions. The skirt steak sandwich while tasty, some of the pieces of the meat were tough and chewy and should not have been for $25. The fries were tasty as well as the drinks. The staffs were also very friendly and kind, and even offered to remedy our appetizer when it was overly seasoned and salty, which we really appreciated it. She gave us a side of the Hot Honey, which was just a bit too spicy for me, but I prefer less heat than most. The cheese steak was excellent! Generous amount of medium rare steak, onions, and peppers, all perfectly seasoned. A side of truffle fries and we were good for lunch. The atmosphere was a little on the sparse, cold side with no cohesive "vibe". That kept it from getting a fifth star. For food and service, it is definitely a 5 star place. The rice balls lacked flavor depth and that disappointed me the most because they looked delicious. I'm not sure how you can mess up truffle fries but this batch missed the mark. My date had the salmon and said it had good flavor and was cooked nicely. The service started off pretty slow and the waitress seemed uninterested in taking my order. ***3 1/2 stars*** One of my toxic traits that I'm sort of but not really trying to fix is picking restaurants based on the name (which really did me in a few years ago when I selected the dust-covered Moose Tooth Grill in Lake George for lunch), but a) I didn't select this one and b) it was actually fairly decent. I came here with my Bitch Pack on Friday for an early dinner around 5ish. This was about as convenient a "meet in the middle" place as we could have found, literally a minute or two off 287. Despite not being very familiar with this immediate area, Black Rabbit was very easy to find with ample parking options. I was a few minutes early but the hostess was very accommodating and without hesitation showed me to a table to wait for my tardy compatriots. I liked the vibe in here instantly; it's one medium-sized airy room with a bar area to the right of the entrance, barn-like rafters and feels both modern and rustic, if that makes sense. A lot of items on both the food and drink menu looked intriguing (definitely my kind of place in that regard), and I decided to go with the Elevation for my weekend nip, featuring vanilla-infused bourbon and espresso. Eh. This was surprisingly one of the low points for me. Texture-wise, I wasn't crazy about the fact that it was kind of icy (a fact not disclosed on the menu, which makes me wonder if it was even supposed to be) and I just didn't think that the flavors complemented each other well; the bitterness won the day. Black Rabbit made a big comeback though with the app and entree. I split the tuna tartare with one of my chums, and we were both big fans. I devoured my portion very quickly and accidentally got caught gazing hungrily on the remaining portion that wasn't mine. Doesn't say a lot about me, does say a lot about the tuna tartare. I really liked the rice cake foundation, which gave the dish a nice crunch (not dissimilar from a crunch layer in a sushi roll). The gnocchi was excellent as well - a LITTLE heavy on the cheese but I was enamored with the sauce, which was on the sweeter side and thick without being crunchy. That was also probably inhaled too quickly, but no matter. The comeback unfortunately was short-lived; we split the chocolate fudge cake, which honestly was just not that good. The biggest reason was that they DOUSED the cake in cocoa powder (see attached), so I literally inhaled/choked on it when I took the first bite. Either mix it into the cake, or do a super light dusting, but I'm not interested in suffocating during dessert. Big miss for me, and what sadly tipped the scales and made this something other than an unequivocal positive experience. The service was just okay. One of the benefits to hanging out with a group of people with the souls of 80-year-olds is that you're not usually pressed for time at a 5PM dinner, but the waitress WAS noticeably not as present as she should have been. It was fairly busy so that's at least a partial excuse but I noticed a few times when I looked up for her that she was just chatting away with the hostess at the front - optics can be unfair, but they matter. There was a lot to like here atmosphere- and food-wise and I WOULD come back, but when you're already thinking ahead to the next visit and how you need to pivot to some other options, that's a problem. read more
