We typically order to go from Mack's but had a really good experience in the restaurant. The shrimp and clam linguini is always outstanding but even better when it's not ina cardboard box. I enjoyed the French onion soup thoroughly. The small hand towels in the bathroom are a really nice touch. The service was good. One note...the dining room can be very loud when packed. This is a local joint with a very welcoming feel and staff. Our server, Suzanne, was helpful with the menu and has a great personality. The wings were large, crispy and juicy. On our way back from Woodbury Commons, we were looking for a nice place to grab a meal not too far off Rt 287. Thanks to Yelp, we found Mack's. Pompton Lakes isn't a town I've been in before, so it was pretty cool driving up Wannaque Ave, their Main Street. Mack's is an historic site, it was the original home of the firehouse. Very cool, hometown restaurant. My wife, stepson, and I, found the food very good and reasonably priced. We started off with the spinach dip, then entrees of crab cakes sandwiches, and the Monterey chicken sandwich. Topping that off with a couple of cold beers was perfect! One side note I have to mention is the bathrooms...they were beautiful! Rather than paper towels, there are wash cloths. I thought that was unique and really nice! Parking very easy in the back. Meh. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. I ordered a salmon dish and the salmon was on the dry side. The waiter wasn't the most attentive either. It was fine though. Worth a try to see if you like your dish better. read more

Great little hometown bar - went on a busy Saturday night and only had to wait about 15 minutes. Big bar on one side of the restaurant. We sat and had the scallop appetizer special -reasonable size portion for 2 people. dinner had a steak sandwich which was good but better without the bread since the ratio seemed to be off and my husband had a chicken sandwich that was on special that night which he said was really good. Waitress was really nice - we should've skipped dessert since both weren't really worth it. The apple strudel seemed a little doughy and the bread pudding the waitress recommend raving saying it as like warm French toast ... ehh not so much but overall it was a great night out not rushed and had good food at a local place. read more

I was excited about going out for date night with my husband and decided on Mack's. The decor was dark and intimate and I was pleased with the environment. We were greeted by a friendly who took our drink orders and related the server would be with us. My husband was brought the wrong drink. The service was slow so he just drank it. We ordered a crab cake appetizer a simple pasta dish and a hangar steak. The crab cake was good but came out an hour later. After waiting another hour without receiving our entrees I asked for the check. They said the food was ready so I asked for it to be wrapped. I ordered the steak medium it was well done. I was very disappointed my time was wasted now I'll have to wait another month for a makeup date. It was a Monday night not too many people. Please get more staff read more

Came in the afternoon on a Tuesday. The service was great, pretty quick, but not obnoxiously quick. Started with a small ceaser salad, it was meh.. lettuce tasted frozen, and the dressing was not great. I had the pan seared salmon which was excellent. Nice portions and great sides... Only negative is they were playing hip hop music which is strange considering the clientele that was here, mostly older people having early dinner.. I would have expected something more classy... Seemed to not really fit the feel of the place.. I think a staff member was thinking of themselves rather than the diners. read more

We're new to the area and stopped in for lunch on a quiet Saturday. Nice menu, very good food, generous portions. That's reason enough to come back but the real highlight was Suzanne our server; what a pleasure to see a real professional at work. I was in the mood for a really good burger and searched online for about an hour checking reviews before landing on Mack's. My hubby and I had been there before but it's not that close, so we don't get there often. I had a burger with blue cheese, sautéed onions, bacon and herb aioli. It was FANTASTIC. Service was great. Mack's American Bar & Grill is a great neighborhood spot. Fun atmosphere and very friendly staff. They have good specials and you have to try the mountainous plate of nachos! Kids love the food, adults love the atomosphere and cocktails. My parents frequent Mack's as this is up by their house and the fact that they put up with my father and his antics should be evidence enough that they are worth a shot when in the area! I will have to go back to give a more detailed review of the food. I think the back of the house just turned over so I am excited for our next visit. read more

Mack's is a nice place in the middle of town with nice ambiance, good music and vibe. Weekly specials are usually pretty good. Really like the nachos for appetizers. The fish tacos are pretty nice, you get two with a small side of fries. Burgers are pretty good and come with a large side of fries. Been a few times and every time I am blown away by the food and drinks! This time I got the red sangria and it was amazing! The food is always phenomenal! I seem to always get a daily special when there and not order off their actual menu. This time I had their salmon and it was the best I ever tasted. I can't wait to go back! Restaurant is a good size, we didn't have reservations but they take walk-in & it was slow night so we were able to get a table for 4 right away. We shared the crab mac & cheese as an appetizer; it was good but small portion. We actually all ordered the Hanger steak, just cooked differently. The meal came with soup or salad and accompanying the steak was broccoli and mash potatoes. The meal was really good and the steak was cooked perfectly. Sandra and I stopped in tonight for a bite to eat after a long week. We waited about 15 minutes for a table and then were seated. All staff was friendly and very accommodating. We each had a glass of white sangria. Very good. Sandra had penne with vodka sauce. Big portion but lacked flavor. Very bland. I had linguine with shrimp and clam sauce. Big portion and fantastic flavor. The shrimp were big and tender and the clams were tender and flavorful. Very enjoyable. We shared an apple strudel with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Tonight was our 4th time here. The first time was delicious, food was amazing. The 2nd time we were asked if we could move to a different table in the middle of our meal. They needed the table for a larger group! The 3rd time, my pork chop was way overcooked. AND tonight was prime rib night. You can only order prime rib after 5 PM. We arrived at 6:15 and the prime rib was completely sold out. They were replacing the prime rib with a strip steak, it was the most awful strip steak we have ever eaten. The soup of the day was pasta Fagioli, there was not a Bean to be found in the soup. We asked for butter for the potatoes when we ordered dinner. The dinner came with no butter and by the time it finally arrived after asking for it, two more times, our potatoes were cold so the butter didn't melt. I asked the waiter to please heat my potatoes up. By the time he returned with the potatoes, I was finished with my the rest of my dinner. Our waiter was the worst. He took forever to return with the butter and the heated potatoes. And when we told him that our dinner was terrible he just said I'm sorry. He should definitely be in a different business. We have given this restaurant four chances And the prices aren't exactly cheap so I don't think we'll be back and I don't recommend it read more

Stopped on by chance on an early Friday on December around 6:30pm or so. Place was very busy but the genuinely awesome man said I'll be right with you. After asking how many (2) said let me check, came back and said 10 minutes or less. Super. Virtually 3 minutes later we get a table. So here's my early take...the food was very very good but what really made this evening as the service. From (who I assume is) the owner, to the tremendous lady who waited on us (I'm sorry I did not ask your name but you were swamped) as well as the nice guy who ran our food, everybody was an absolute gem. Food was super. Appetizers were a dozen littleneck clams and the 3 bean chili special. Great chili!!! We went simple for dinner with a salad of mammoth proportions and a great burger. Extra special thanks for the fries, awesome. We even got 2 pub steak sandwiches to go for our sons, they both said delicious and thanks!!!! Highly recommended read more

I love this place. Small, dimly lit old bar style restaurant with great food and drinks. Staff is always welcoming and professional. I love the menu variety. They have a great selection of sandwiches as well as dinners and appetizers. They always have a blackboard with a variety of specials.
