The food was outstanding across the board, and the service was attentive, professional, and on point throughout the evening. The only minor hiccup involved our seating. We had reserved a table on the patio, which is usually the perfect place to dine. Unfortunately, the weather turned out to be a bit cooler than expected. By the time we were finishing our main courses, it had become too cold to fully enjoy the outdoor setting. We had inquired earlier about moving inside, but the restaurant was unable to accommodate us at that time due to capacity. Thankfully, they were able to find us a table indoors for dessert, which we greatly appreciated. That turned out to be the perfect ending to the evening, as the desserts were every bit as impressive as the rest of the meal. Overall, this was an excellent dining experience with outstanding food and service. Pretty good but probably wouldn't get again. 3.5/5 The staff mentioned that the red curry mussels ($17) was a popular dish, and it was the favorite of the night. I usually don't like mussels but the sauce was super flavorful and the mussels were tender. 5/5 Never had a bone-in pork schnitzel ($42) and while it was pricey, it was quite the size. Stopped in for happy hour (5-6:30) on a Tuesday evening with a couple of friends. We sat by a wall of windows on the enclosed front porch. I like when older houses get revamped and have a whole new life as a restaurant but never loses its charm as a house. Poppy - A Perfect Patio & Culinary Experience in Larchmere We were on the hunt for a beautiful patio on a perfect Cleveland day, and the internet led us right to Poppy in the Larchmere District. After seeing the gorgeous photos and reading some glowing reviews, we knew we had to try it--especially knowing it comes from one of the creative minds behind the award-winning Salt. We arrived right as they opened, which gave us the perfect calm moment to take in the setting and enjoy every bite. We started with Shawnda's Biscuits and honey lavender butter--rich, and just the right touch of sweet. Alongside that, we ordered the woodfired fresh focaccia with burrata, sunflower seeds, saba, and the most perfectly ripe strawberries. It was as gorgeous as it was delicious. For mains, we chose the shrimp and jalapeño-infused grits with a tomato-herb oil--comforting with just the right amount of kick--and the Cobia, served over esquites (a Mexican street corn-style base) with chili oil. It usually looks prettier, but I had the cilantro salad put on the side. And then came the banana cake--which deserves a review of its own. Massive, rich, and meant to be shared (though no judgment if you don't). It came with brown sugar caramel cream, almond butter caramel, and a banana almond crunch that took it over the top. Truly decadent. Don't skip it. Andrew, our server was attentive and gave just the right amount of advice. A+ service. Sadly, I was too captivated by the food to snap a picture of the gorgeous patio, but trust me--it's the kind of space that makes you want to sit and linger. Amazing food and ambiance: we sat outside on a warm summer night and had a really great meal. We started off with Prosecco and beer and got the maitake mushroom as well as the Japanese eggplant for the appetizer. The maitake mushroom was a really unique and delicious dish, the eggplant definitely has more Asian flavors that tastes like a stereotypical yu Xiang eggplant--not in a bad way but in a less unique way. We got the octopus special for entree which complemented the fingerling potatoes and chorizo very well and it was quite tender. We ended the night with the strawberry pretzel salad which had homemade strawberry ice cream--slightly icy in texture but tasted very fresh without any artificial flavor. I do not recommend the honeynut squash entree, for $26 you get one small squash that is smaller than a sweet potato with lentils sprinkled on top. The shrimp and grits were very good but when you compare it to similar upscale restaurants in Cleveland, the portion is almost double or triple the size for the same price. This is such a quaint little place. I've been meaning to go to Poppy for awhile now. Finally, I got the chance to check it out. For starters, my boyfriend and I tried shawnda's biscuits & honey lavender butter, ceviche and the calamari. The biscuits were flaky and tasty. I loved the honey lavender butter. The calamari were fried perfectly but I was not sure about the sumac raita. I felt like it did not add anything to the dish. I did like the dills in the calamari though. Next, the ceviche was amazing and fresh. The coconut added some sweetness to the ceviche. For entrees, my boyfriend got poppy burger which came with malt vinegar-powdered French fries. The burger cooked perfectly medium. The fries were crispy but some of them were a bit too salty for our taste. They put too much malt vinegar powder on them. I opted for the duck breast. Everything in that dish was great. Overall, the food is like 4/5 but the service was 5/5. They were so attentive and caring about my boyfriend's allergy. We finally made it to Poppy and were not disappointed. We went for their holiday bar pop-up, which is hosted in the cute back barn area they have, which is a bit chilly but is being warmed by some extra heaters in the space. The charm of the ambiance more than makes up for a few chills. The drink menu for the holiday season is excellent. I went with the coquito, a sort of Puerto Rican egg nog-type deal but that gets all of its creaminess from coconut cream. It was boozy and delicious. My husband got a drink off of the regular menu called put 'em up, put 'em up and was impressed (yes, I am here for the Wizard of Oz themed drink names). We also ordered two small dishes - a salad with currants and butternut squash that was knock-out and a smoked trout dip - very yummy. We didn't make any reservations to go to the pop-up bar and we were seated quickly and served efficiently. The pop-up is first come first served, but if you're going to sit in the main restaurant its fairly clear you'll need a reservation or very good luck. The balance of the sours and the vermouth (the blanc - mind you not the "dry" / white or "sweet" / red vermouth) has a sweet taste profile and was excellent. Spring is finally here and Poppy has bloomed on Larchmere! While the outside is the same residential building from Felice days, the inside is newly polished but still vintage cozy. Plants are being nurtured in every corner (yes, even in the restroom) and thrive in the covered porch area where you could almost convince yourself you're just sitting at your neighbor's. We came for the first lunch service and everything ran like a well-oiled machine. Chef Parkison herself was part of the welcome party as diners arrived. Inside, the atmosphere is classy and casual, certainly dressed down from Salt+, but the service and food are enough to impress. Classic rock was the soundtrack while we perused the simple but enticing menu, which our server Samantha explained was all made from scratch in the kitchen (except from the bread sourced from On the Rise). We snagged a window seat with huge pillows and were immediately offered filtered water. The menu is in the flavor of Salt+ with a mix of vegetable, seafood, and land meats, including some cocktails imported directly from the old menu, but there's also more entree style dishes near the bottom of each list. A variety of seating exists for intimate tables for two or larger groups. Selecting our food was no easy feat as Samantha genuinely loves food and waxed poetic about everything, but we didn't feel pressured to order. Everything we ordered was fantastic, with perfect consistency and cook - the Potato Leek Fritters set the stage, the Scallops were plump and delicate, and Lamb Burger perfectly juicy. With the housing refresh, you can peek into the kitchen where food was efficiently prepped and whisked to each table - you can't help but get food envy while watching plates pass. We even gushed about how warm and toasty the bathroom was (a pleasant experience in the winter), and I was pleased to see the vintage bookcase in the bathroom was not only delicately adorned with paintings of poppies, but stocked with feminine hygiene products. Poppy's not done growing yet either - when warmer months arrive, supposedly the outdoor patio area will transform into a speakeasy style bar, Etta, for over 100. It's in a little house with creaky floorboards but very Tremont/Coventry-esque. The staff is pretty friendly and attentive. Menu was attractive and pricey but not crazily so. Like Salt, they do small plates but I found that the variety was better. The flavors, quality of the food, cut of the protein were quite excellent. While the portions weren't huge, they were realistic. My bill for myself came up to almost $60 for 1 app + 1 entree but I left full and satisfied. Eating at Poppy was not a great experience. The food was ok, but the ambiance and the service were subpar at best. We sat outside, and let me tell you there were more flies then you can imagine. Not sure if it was sewer-related or garbage, but as soon as our food came, we were surrounded by flies. They had candles to light but they were "out of fuel" they found some smaller candles but did not put them near our tables even after we asked. The food was very inconsistent. As we saw what was delivered to other tables, we ordered the same items, only to get very different results. The food had odd sauces and no one at our table enjoyed their meal. And the beverages. Even though the bar was also outside and right next to our table, it took 20-30 minutes to get our drinks. We ordered a second round a few minutes before our food arrived, and the drinks showed up after our plates had been cleared. Finally, to top it off, the server delivered our check and announced, in a cheery voice (for the first time) that a 20% gratuity was included for parties of 6 or more (we were 6). I got the lamb burger and cauliflower starter for my dishes. We also ordered two slices of sourdough bread for ($1 each) to wipe up the extra cauliflower sauce. It was really tasty! Also the lamb burger was really flavorful with sweet potatoes fries. The feta cheese on the burger was really good too! Would love to come back and try other dishes. The menu features chef-crafted dishes that are fun to explore, some are great, others are near misses and a bit pricey. I visited poppy on the recommendation of some friends, who said this is one of the best meals that they had in Cleveland. We were able to make a reservation for a party of two on a Friday evening, and they were able to seat us promptly. Poppy is in a classic Cleveland home on Larchmere, so there's beautiful wood, intimate tables, and overall, great ambience. We started it off with cocktails: the Evelyn's, Spanish gin and tonic, as well as the come out, come out, wherever you are. The Evelyn's Spanish food and tonic is probably the best G&T I've ever had in my life, I could drink a whole pitcher of this. The come out come out wherever you are was also excellent, and taste like an upscale aperol spritz, but with less Prosecco. As far as the menu goes, the items are organized from smallest to largest for the different categories: vegetables, seafood, meat. Given that this is more of a small plate style, we ordered for dishes between the two of us. We started off with a potato and leek fritters, which were delicious, that we both wished that it were a bit crunchier, and didn't fall apart quite as easily. We had to smash cucumber salad on the recommendation of our server, and it was definitely a unique flavor that I haven't heard of before, but the more I eat it, the more I enjoyed it. The whipped feta paired with the fennel and cucumber is such a unique and refreshing combination. The lobster cake was incredible. Probably our favorite dish of the night. It definitely is on the smaller side, which is unfortunate given the price point, but it was so tender and perfectly seasoned, and the accompanying aïoli was also very delicious. The mussels came in a harissa sauce, which was so delicious. The toasted bread comes with an olive tapenade on top, but we definitely requested more bread afterwards to soak up some of the delicious broth (FYI it is an extra $1 per plate of bread). Overall, we really enjoyed all of the food that we had. Our servers are very attentive, and the food came out quickly. My only gripe is with the price point, but I would definitely love to come back for like a happy hour at the bar, and just drinking gin and tonics with bar snacks. I just wanted some hot sauce to help with the cod but there wasn't any. The server we had was incredibly sweet and swapped my meal for a lamb burger which was pretty good!!! Everything they serve is scratch made so that is always appreciated. We were there celebrating our 8 year anniversary and then saw a table next to us get served champagne because the waitress overheard it was their anniversary. We came for the early brunch and got some duck confit, a lamb burger, and a side of smashed potatoes. All of the potato dishes were fantastic. I'm not a big fan of duck to begin with so that wasn't my favorite dish. The lamb burger was pretty good, but a bit heavy for a brunch.
