The whiskey bar is a hole in the wall neighborhood bar that I've been meaning to check out forever. They have a large selection of whiskey and bourbon as the name implies, but also a smaller menu of cocktails with other spirits. The cocktails are reasonably priced, ranging from $10-$15, and the whiskeys have a large price range, ranging from $5-$350. If you are curious about trying different whiskeys, you can also get a flight, when you get 3 half pours of whiskey at half price each. It's definitely a small and intimate place, with a pretty tight seating, though they do have a downstairs area, though I'm not sure when it's open. Please keep in mind that this place does not have food, so don't come too hungry. They do provide you with some bar snacks, which for me were pretzel chips and chocolate covered almonds. I do think they have a cheese board on the menu for around $25, though I personally did not try it. This is a fun oasis on Coventry. You walk in and you feel a little like you have stepped into the past, but with high end drinks and service. The staff is on point with the pours and the knowledge of different drinks you can try when it comes to whiskey. But there are some more familiar dark and stormys and mojito type drinks if someone you bring isn't into the main theme of drinks. Hard to go home unhappy. The cost of drinks are a little higher then some other places, but you get an experience and higher end service you won't find at very many places. To me, it's worth the difference and I find I tip the staff more than I usually might as they are worth it. Excellent service. This place is absolutely a hidden gem in Cleveland! Absolutely stellar selection of all manner of whiskey/whisky/scotch/some bourbon. It is tucked away and the sign is just dark lettering on a dark awning so it is easy to miss. The owner, Jay Novak, is a Bosnian immigrant who owns the place with his wife. We did not know this at the time. He gave our group of three a personal tasting session while answering our many questions about this or that bottle. He was up front about not knowing something when he didn't. We tried a fantastic variety of peaty, smoky whiskey, Japanese whisky, and more. At one point they even brought us cheese and crackers to help cleanse the palate! We all had a first rate time and I can't wait to go back to try more. read more

Noè (Noah) is an exceptional barkeep, he was able to curate the experience to the point that he's turned me into a person that avoids whiskey to an advocate. He gave very personal service while never taking his eye off his other customers. At a full bar he made me feel like I was the only customer. The whiskey selection is excellent as expected. I've watched a lot of documentaries about the distilling process for a variety of whiskeys, scotches, Bourbons, but I learned more practical information in five minutes from him. The place is a gem. I can't say enough good things about it. The bartenders and owners know so much, this is the drinking experience I love. We have a good conversation, some history on the bottles and perfect recommendations. The bar is beautiful, perfect amount of room, and the atmosphere is friendly. I've talked to perfect strangers about what they like and drink, it's great. I wish this place was closer to where I lived. The price is extremely reasonable and far cheaper than most places I have gone. Their selection is top notch and it gives me a chance to try a rare bottle that I would not otherwise find. There is something so intimate about this place. It's a small bar off the corner of Coventry and Euclid Heights, tucked next to Chipotle. As soon as you walk in, you see the wall of alcohol that looks like a piece of art itself. They have a small menu of drinks, if you want but you could try a flight of different whiskeys (minimum of three). My friend was able to work with the bartender with how much she wanted to spend and had him choose a few different types for her to try for her flight. I actually got the Sazerac because I had NOLA on my mind at the time. The Whiskey Bar has a downstairs/"speakeasy" area where they typically have live music on Friday and Saturday nights. We were there on a Friday night, but we didn't hear music at the time. They ended up giving us a small plate of meat and cheese on the house, so we were pleasantly surprised by the hospitality. This is a great place a more intimate experience and a chance to try a variety of whiskeys that you may have never thought about. I'm definitely coming back here to check out the live music downstairs one night. read more

Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. There are better bars around, but it would make just as much sense to take the money you've saved and start your own whiskey collection. I live in Connecticut, so I'm no stranger to pretense, but this guy surprised even me. I noticed that there was a bottle of Old Forester Birthday Bourbon on the shelf, and I recommended it to a colleague because *I have some at home* and like it. The owner looked us up and down and said that my colleague probably wouldn't want it, as it is a $100/oz pour. He then went on to give excuses as to why it was that expensive (hard to get, rarely in Ohio, etc), assuming, I guess, that we knew nothing. He then recommended a couple cheaper options for which he'd let a stingy pour go for around $50 (all retailing for around $50/bottle). My colleague decided on something significantly cheaper that he knows and likes. The owner sighed and asked how he wanted it, and my colleague replied that he finds that a splash of water usually opens it up. The owner replied that "if you want a splash, you won't get it from me." Lovely. I ordered a cocktail, as did another colleague. When we asked what specifically was in them, he told my colleague that he used Jameson's "because you probably wouldn't know the difference with a 'good' whiskey" and told me that I wouldn't know the vermouths because they are rare and expensive (or something to that effect). I pushed, and as I expected, they are exactly what is sitting on my shelf at home. To top things off, we were charged more for both cocktails than the advertised menu price. Had we asked for (or even just *gotten*) "better" alcohol, maybe that could be justified, but he specifically said that he used "the cheap stuff" because my colleague wouldn't know better. I don't know why anyone would treat people that way. Even if we didn't know anything (or maybe *especially* if we didn't), that would be unacceptable. read more

The have two floors both with well stocked bars of a larger variety of whiskey and bourbon. The staff is kind, knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to tasting or trying the new whiskeys. The prices are comparable to other whiskey bars, it all depends on what you order. Sometimes they have live music, great for relaxing and sipping, tasting and talking with friends or a date. This bar is scoring highly due to the sheer selection of whiskeys, bourbons, and ryes that they have on-site. The wall of liquor is a sight to behold. We ordered our standards - sazerac and a manhattan, and both were delicious and I thought fairly priced for a bourbon bar. We asked the bartender to pick the spirit for us and he did a great job and stayed within the listed price on the menu. I also appreciated the free finger foods that came along with the drinks. I guess the reason that I'm deducting a star is that we were there at 8pm on a Saturday and the place was empty. We were the only customers. That's not a fault of the bar per se, but it creates a weird vibe when you're the only ones there. It was also disappointing that we did not therefore have spot-on service (we had to wait awkwardly to pay our tab). We also didn't know there was a downstairs. So this is a very interesting spot. I'll start by saying why I took away a star. The primary issue that I had is that I felt the owner was just making up prices as he went. There are maybe 6 mixed drinks on the menu that range from about $10-$12. The owner offered to make me a custom drink nothing too fancy and it ended up costing me $25....yikes. On top of that, it was only "okay". This was our second round of drinks. Our first was a flight of 3 different whiskeys and I had a mixed drink on the side. The flight was $50 and my custom mixed drink was $12, with a 20% tip we paid a little more than $70, which was reasonable based on the whiskeys we chose. That's why the $25 mixed drink seemed like a made up price. Overall the space is very cozy with about 10 to 12 seats. I did not visit the downstairs bar where there was suppose to be live music. However, we heard Kanye West playing through the floor, so I'm not sure how " live" it was and it definitely was not speakeasy. Some reviews complained about the attitude of the owner...I could see it. Even though our experience besides the making up of prices, was really pleasant. There was another guy behind the bar who was very hospitable. Our drinks were served with a variety of finger foods that helped to bring out the flavor of the whiskey. All in all, we had a really good time. However, I honestly doubt I'll go back. There's something off-putting when you feel you've been overcharged just because. Now, that doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend it, just be sure to ask about the prices if you are offered a custom drink. read more

This place is small and a bit aloof for the neighborhood. It does have an amazing whiskey selection. The bartender's (owner's) behavior is a bit off putting in that he does not seem to understand that craft cocktails are as much about the likability of the purveyor of the cocktail as they are about the alcohol; nobody wants to buy and drink a cocktail from a villain. He had a very condescending attitude towards my drink of choice for the evening; why stock it if you don't think people should drink it? Go once to say you have been. Maybe your experience will be different than mine, but I doubt it. Then remember, there are more inviting places in Cleveland Heights with more sociable, likable and talented bartenders. I recommend The Fairmount and Nighttown. And, I have high hopes for Parnell's in its new location. As for The Whiskey Bar, it has a long way to go before it matches service with its amazing selection so, I can only give 1 star! read more

Coventry just became my favorite place in Cleveland. I had heard about the Whiskey Bar... a secluded, more niche place to go in Coventry, for those seeking a darker place to refine your palate. We decided to have a quiet Saturday evening here because we wanted to fill our sinuses with peat and have dreams of Islay aromas. The staff is extensively knowledgeable about not only whiskeys, but spirits in general. It seems there is a story behind every bottle and every pour. We even got a tour of the speakeasy downstairs (which looks great for private events)! This place is fantastic. As you sit here, sets of one or two people will trickle in to have an unparalleled whiskey cocktail or sample one of the hundreds of amazing whiskey this place carries. If you've been to a whiskey bar before, this place holds true to the theme. Live music on Saturdays set to the mood of Iron & Wine make this place the truest place to unwind before the week begins again. I think this place has the potential to be awesome. I went hoping that I could see the downstairs bar, with music being played. When I got there, only the upstairs bar was open. It is quite lovely inside. As many whiskeys to choose from as I could ever wish for. However, the man who served us was rude more than once. Upon walking in, I had high hopes for this place. The wall of whiskey that greets you is impressive. My go to drink is an Old Fashioned. They clearly are using homemade bitters, which were so overpowering poured with such a heavy hand that all I tasted was spices. Further it completely changed the color of the drink. Total bust! I had high hopes for this bar, given their Facebook ads and glowing reviews. The bar was a little hard to find given that it wasn't on the main strip. Once my friend and I arrived, I was hesitant to go in because of how small it was, until I saw the liquor on the wall, I thought it was a barbershop. Despite my hesitation, I still entered the bar which had about seven customers in it, which looked almost full due to the size. After taking a seat at the bar we are greeted by a male bartender who immediately asked for IDs. Being in my early 20s this happens a lot, so that was no problem. Once I gave it to him, he proceeded to inspect the ID, even bending it (never once looking at me for comparison) for about three minutes. I thought this is rather strange since I've never had anyone inspect my ID in such a way, not even a police officer. It is the 2018 new ID which can substitute for a passport when crossing the border. He eventually return my ID and then proceeded to inspect my friend's REAL Nebraska ID for 5 more minutes. During the second inspection, I realize that this was probably not about the ID and more about not wanting to serve us. My friend and I left after he returned her ID. Such a shame, I would've love to try the signature cocktails of this bar, given that is a local establishment. Instead, I drove to Pinecrest where we tipped another lackluster server $28 on our $92 bill. As someone in the industry, I realize how important it is to make your guests feel welcome, this bartender did the exact opposite. read more
