One of the hidden gems in Durham. I love the vibe with the jukebox and the pizza tastes like authentic NY style pizza.

Better than Domino's and Papa John's, of course. You are (almost) always better off getting pizza from a local joint, rather than any horrifying national chains. Despite being in one of those little restaurants next to a grocery store, the cozy inside does pretty accurately resemble a nice little pizza place somewhere in the Northeast. I particularly like the touch of having wooden booths. It's a little odd to have the whole food prep area blocked from view, but there's still a pleasant atmosphere for dining. The food is somewhat more distant from its roots in, apparently, the Northeast. Although all dishes that I saw maintained their correct shape (circles, half-moons, and so on), the dough was tragically dense, rubbery, sour, and appeared to be largely unsuccessful in its attempts to rise -- which severely constricted the potential quality of any of the dough-centric menu items, of which there were quite a lot. The sauce was okay -- a little bland, but that's not really a problem for me. The cheese didn't taste very good; it may not have been of the caliber needed to equal (in taste) the quality (in comfort) of the booths. That said, there are plenty of options for the non-purists who won't have impossibly high standards for pizza (people not from the Northeast, that is) -- there are (in whole pie form, as there are no slices for sale) Hawaiian pizzas, BBQ pizzas, buffalo chicken pizzas, and wings, all of which are probably fine. read more

I ordered a chicken parm and asked for sauce in the side, which did not happen. IThe other food that was delivered came in smashed boxes. I will say that the chicken parm was really good. Apparently there is a glitch, per delivery guy, and the tip did not come through. He made me aware of this. We didn't have cash to give him and he said, "I'm sure you meant well." Da fuk? Seriously? Review for delivery only. I wasn't sure what to expect given the mixed reviews but my food was hot, fresh and better than most pizza places. The Stromboli was huge and came with just the right amount of cheese. The garlic knots were tasty as well, though they could dial back the oil level a bit, the pizza had just a little char in a good way on the proper thin NY crust and the side salad was fresh and large portion. Ricky's NY Pizza is where it's at. Do yourself a favor and get down to Ricky's pizza. Went here with my wife after seeing multiple tiktoks about Ricky's pop up talking about how amazing it is. Boy were they right. This is a small traditional looking pizza joint with a small sit in area dorned with various pop art painting and exposed brick walls. It reminded me of the places I went to as a kid growing up in NY. The menu has traditional style pies as well as uniquely Ricky's topped pies. We ordered a traditional grandma's pie (a staple when trying a new pizza place) a "Big Mac" pizza and a chicken primavera pizza. The grandma's pizza was an example to other pizza places on how it's done. The Big Mac pizza tasted exactly how it should have but even better. The chicken primavera went crazy. Each pizza was my favorite until I took a bite of the next pizza....then that was my favorite. The staff was super friendly and the owner even came to our table to check on us and chop it up a bit. Their are so many things on this menu I will definitely be back to try out. So if you find yourself in the mood for some of the best pizza you could get bring yourself down to Ricky's and order a few pies. read more

Call in Order for an Antipasto Salad and an order of Lasagna. OMG, the salad was perfect (except no pepperoncini). A heavily created with fresh, crispy, crunchy, iceberg lettuce, tomato bits, cucumber quarters, black olives topped by rolled ham, salami and mozzeralla cheese sliced up in 1/4" slices on top. Their creamy Italian dressing is excellent too. As to the Lasagna, here on the north side of Durham, there is another pizza/Italian place and by far, the portion at Ricky's may have been a tad higher, but also, the take out plate was loaded with what was ordered. Included was a half of a sub roll for your bread source. Overall, delicious, overall, a good deal for one's money as the salad alone was enough for three meals and kept fresh in the fridge. I've visited twice so far at a neighbor's recommendation. The New York pizza was good. I liked the thin crust (great for folding). The flavor was much like the slices I've enjoyed in Manhattan. Garlic bread was good too--very buttery. The best thing was the Penne ala Vodka. The sauce was EXCELLENT. So thick and creamy and flavorful! From the moment I walked in, it felt like I'd been coming here for years everyone was so warm and welcoming, like catching up with old friends even though it was my first visit. Ricky's is my fiancée's go-to pizza place. She absolutely loves them, and I have to agree, they make good pizza (she is a New Yorker, so the pride in that Ricky's!). When ordering for delivery, they get the order right each time, which is great (and unique, it doesn't happen often when ordering from other places). Another big thing is their Sicilian pizza. This is really really good pizza. We are NY pizza aficionados, and this is just about the best pizza outside of NY. We've been going here for years - and it's as good today as it was 8-9 years ago. The crust is the best part - the ends are crispy and chewy with nice doughy flavor. The sauce is ok - not the best ever, but it's serviceable. Today we had garlic in ours and it was delightfully garlicky. Almost my favorite part, beyond the crust, is that you can get seltzer from the soda machine. That's standard up north but a rarity down south. It's usually pretty quiet inside and a bit dark, often with 70s music playing. Ricky's NY Pizza does not disappoint. read more

My wife and I tried Ricky's because of a recommendation. We did not have high expectations because we have never had really good NY pizza anywhere I've lived outside of New Jersey or New York. We have lived in Raleigh and are now living in San Diego and just visiting family in Durham. We are VERY particular about pizza. We can't get good pizza in San Diego. Ricky's pizza was outstanding. It is the real deal, the first good NY pizza I have had in North Carolina. If you're from the NY area, don't hesitate to go here for pizza because this pizza will meet your high expectations. If you're from somewhere else and have never had pizza in the NY area, go to Ricky's and experience something great. There was a white bald man around 35-45, at the front that was very rude in front of customers. They didnt ask what i needed at all, pointed their finger at me to wait instead of asking. I didnt mind that, but he also had me wait 3 other times without addressing me, 1st time he was chatting up a customer who already ate and paid and was leaving, and I had to wait again pick up a doordash order which was already late. THEN another customer came inside the building and he told me "Sir can you move so that this person can pay", he didn't say please and was rude about it, and when my girlfriend came into the store to see what was taking long, he starts off rude because she says the order is late. Then man then replied "Do you cook?", she says yeah but the customer on doordash is wondering about an eta for the food. the food was already ready so he brought it but says again "do you know how long it takes to fry chicken?" my girlfriend walks off and he tries to talk to me about how she should act. idk why he thinks he can be disrespectful to us, especially while at work and when we were respectful, but ig he just mad hes bald. read more

This might be my 2nd review. (Oops) But, years later after my first one and this pizzeria still does not disappoint. We decided for a pizza dinner night and chose Ricky's! 2 large pizzas later, order of fried cheese ravioli and mozzarella sticks and I'm drowning in NY pizza bliss. There pizza speaks for itself. Perfect crust and amount of sauce! Of course, you get to choose what kind you want but we always get the classic pepperoni and a cheese pizza (kids). We all end up eating way too much but it's quite enjoyable. The fries cheese ravioli is one of my favorite local appetizers. I don't even need the marinara that it comes with. So crunchy on the outside and cheesy, creaminess on the inside. This place always gives us their best and we will continue to come back! Thanks Ricky's! read more

Rickys is my favorite NY style pizza. Perfect crust, nice amount of cheese. Our go to place if we want that style pizza. Some may find it greasy, but that is sorta the norm for NY style- my daughter just dabs it with a napkin- that takes care of the problem if indeed you find it a problem. I love it just the way it is! We have been ordering takeout for months from this place. We have small outdoor gatherings with two families in the neighborhood, and we have tried many places thus far. We like this place the best. Love the taste of their pizzas which are light and full of flavor. The prices are reasonable. The place is clean, everyone wears masks. Orders are usually ready in 20 minutes. I order from their website and they have their own affordable delivery (not through DoorDash-even though that's also an option if you are interested). The parking is generous as they are located in a small shopping mall. I just need to take some pictures next time. :) read more

We ordered subs from Ricky's. They were delivered with hardly no meat and what seemed like Oscar Meyer ham. It was not what we expected. We gave them another try. I heard it was good pizza so I went in to order a small one and the $20 minimum tripped me out. What place requires a $20 minimum??? Not even the neighboring Dog House. The owner either wants to make you spend more with bullying tactics and/or scamming Uncle Sam. There is nothing in North Durham but they are my last resort. Good pizza! People have always been super friendly. Never had delivery so I can't speak for that but they are usually pretty quick. Decent sanitation grade. They always get my order right. It may be a little more expensive than the chain pizza but the quality seems better to me! read more

Not a bad stromboli, kind of small but ingredients were quality and it was filling. Order totaled out to $8 for a lunch combo stromboli and a 20 minute wait time before pick up. Looking at the menu thats actually the same price as a stromboli normally, but includes a drink. Why I was asked if I wanted a drink when I picked the order up was beyond me, I declined because I assumed it was supposed to come with one but I may have been charged if I said yes. The stromboli was a bit watery but the overall experience was decent, stromboli had some sauce on the inside including the standard cup on the side which I was a fan of. I like light airy dough so I was a bit disappointed by the density of theirs but the taste was fine, pepperoni and sausage inside were thinly sliced and tasted well, as did the cheese even though there was a pretty heavy amount(this a partial complaint, partial praise). I would be a bit hesitant to try pizza from here as I'd imagine they'd taste like your run-of-the-mill NY slice but they seem like a solid option for non-fast food lunch in the area. read more

I've eaten the pizza from here probably 5 or more times. The pizza is among the best I've had in Durham. It far surpasses dominoes, Pizza Hut, papa john's, etc... Order here before you order from those other places. You won't regret it. My only problem with this place is that I've had what my taste buds told me was the best pizza ever when I was in Virginia Beach (lived there an extended period of time).
