really good new york style pizza been coming here for over 20 years the staff is frendly and the food is fresh, try it, you will like it

In the past, my wife and I used order order what I believe was a 14 inch Supreme pizza which at the time cost $30 which we felt was too much. Today I thought I would try a pizza from the Italian Pizzeria again after I saw a supreme pizza advertised for $20.24 on the restaurant's website. When I called to order and confirm what size it was I was told that it was 14 inches. I double checked the price but then was told that it was over $30! The restaurant has maintained its exorbitant price and what confuses me is how/why they would advertise something that they don't actually offer. Is this a come on or bait and switch? This experience, combined with negative reviews the restaurant has had in the past, has finally persuaded me to not waste my time with trying to food from here at any point in the future. read more

Service by the Hispanic lady is awful on the phone and in person. My son is friends with the son of the owners and we get told to be on hold (not asked) and hung up on at lease 4-5 times per bi weekly orders. Family friend or not, because of her rudeness we will not return. She was nice to us ONCE in person when she found out we know the owners since my son spoke to their son. Very, very poor service. One of the few places that has Anchovy as a topping! The pizza was generally good and the toppings were spread out carefully and neatly. (See photo). This location is never not busy, so expect a lot of chaos ordering at the counter or calling in by phone. The Dining Area is 40 years old, poorly lit, shabby and not a wipe-down priority for the front-end workers. But the outdated decor seems to be the trademark of the entire Italian Pizzeria chain in Durham and Chapel Hill. As long as the food is good and the Health Dept score is respectable, do not hesitate to order from here. read more

What's different about the pizza?? I've always loved Italian pizzeria because coming from N.J. It was the most similar to that style. Greasy and super thin and great. I went there yesterday and the pizza is WAY thicker and less NY/NJ style. Their cheesesteak was also different. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the greatness I'd been accustom to for a long time. Worth going for lunch for a break from the cafeteria, but I wouldn't consider it a destination location. I've been here a few times for heroes and fries. The meatball sub is very good. The chicken parm is good, but not very. It's pre-cut into pieces and I get the feeling it's a frozen product, not a freshly breaded and cooked breast. Good sauce and cheese. Overall, good for a middle of the day lunch, but not top notch. The main reason I'm reviewing is to remind myself not to get fries. Self, why did you get fries today? Did you not remember they're completely forgettable? Just bland commercial grade plastic in fry shape? Okay, self, clearly you forgot because they were forgettable. I mean, you remembered when they were served and you saw them, but it was too late then, wasn't it.  And really, even though you only ate a few fries, you're full, aren't you? The heroes are certainly filling enough that you don't need a side. Why'd you order one? C'mon, shape up, self. Will update if I get around to trying the pizza. While I stand by the register, I can see the pizzaiolo reach his paddle into the steel oven. He pulls my Stromboli from the back, squints at it, flips it and puts it back in. I smell melted cheese from the oven, shaved steak on the griddle, garlic wafting out of a big pot. The family behind me orders chicken parm meals and soft drinks while the father rests a hand on the handle of a stroller. Italian Pizzeria is a great neighborhood restaurant. It's been around almost as long as I have --30+ years --and I remember moms serving it at elementary school sleepovers. When I moved back to Durham several years ago, I was happy to find out that it tastes as good as I remembered. There's something magical about the way these pizzas smell in the passenger seat of the car when I'm driving home with carry out. The Stromboli from tonight was generously stuffed with meats and cheeses. It weighed about twice what a large pizza would, and tasted even better than the aroma. The pizzaiolo's quality checks had worked. The crust had sealed in all the juicy fillings and stayed crunchy on the outside. If only I had more room in my stomach ! The rest will just have to wait until I'm ready for a midnight snack ! read more

We decided to eat pizza just for a change. We'd had Italian pizzeria before so I called in my order and asked my wife to pick it up on her way home. Problems included: she had to wait an extra 30 minutes for our order to be ready, the pizza was totally wrong ( I ordered a cheese pie with bacon and onion on half, I got a pepperoni with mushroom on half) and, most importantly nobody in the kitchen or behind the counter was wearing any masks or ppe. We won't be going back anytime soon. read more

As a regular customer for some 25 years, I agree: food is flavorful, tastes great, portions generous, price reasonable. Their problem is not the food; it is the interior air. I would have reported to their website privately, but no contact sheet is available there. Besides myself, I know of 2 other former patrons who stated they stopped going because of mold in the restaurant. It's NOT the breathing air per se that is objectionable, which can in fact plainly be smelled coming out of the HVAC vent near the drinks machine. It's the extremely unpleasant reaction to otherwise flavorful food either while still at the restaurant or shortly after arriving home. One time the customer might think, "I got a digestion problem today". Twice at the SAME restaurant is starting to look suspicious. The 3rd "strike" and reality is slapping you in the face. News flash: Mold doesn't have to smell bad to be toxic. Old dried-up mold doesn't necessarily smell at all; yet still can do harm. It falls on horizontal surfaces like invisible dust. It penetrates paper bags of flour or other kitchen staples UNLESS plastic bags are used to protect contents, and UNLESS cookware and serving dishes or plates, NO MATTER HOW CLEAN, are at least rinsed again immediately before use. Paper products must be sealed in plastic when not in use. Dishes can accumulate enough mycotoxins from ambient air that, just sitting waiting overnight to be used the next day, is long enough to contaminate the final product. Again, this is not about smelling or tasting bad. With mold, what you can NOT smell is frequently MORE toxic than the obvious odor of "newborn" mold spores. So as much as I would LOVE to continue patronizing this charming old Durham eatery, until they do something about their mold problem, they will lose my patronage, and not just me, because many folks will not speak up; they just cease to come for dinner. It is well known that only 5% of the general population, 1 in 20 people, actually complain aloud or in writing; the other 19 simply simply vote with their feet. So, for the seemingly small number of patron dropouts in us 3 mold-sensitive customers (myself and the 2 fellow sufferers), there are very likely 57 others who aren't showing up WHETHER OR NOT they actually know WHY such delicious food nevertheless disagrees with their digestive system. I really regret saying these things. I repeat: It is not that the food is ill-prepared. Well not exactly. Though their recipes and ingredients are beyond reproach, unbenownst perhaps to the owner, it's the environment where the food is prepared and consumed. The building is very old, so it should be no surprise after years of hot kitchen steam and condensation, possibly undiscovered or unaddressed roof leaks over the years (those brown spots on ceiling tiles can spell real trouble), and/or undetected plumbing leaks hidden inside walls, that ANY BUILDING is vulnerable to mold. Even despite basic housekeeping practices and a spotless health department record, mold does not discriminate. That said, VERY similar food offered at Roxboro Road Italian Pizzeria--same family, very similar splendid menu, but now out of business--caused me NO SUCH violent gastro-intestinal reactions to their equally savory marinaras. Just lucky for them that the building was (apparently) okay. So, to those without this unfortunate predisposition to mold, eat on. I envy you your unalloyed pleasure. read more

We're back and this time not for pizza. As we are new to the area it will take us a while to work our way through the menu. Today did a lunch/supper hybrid. Was in the mood for a steak sandwich. Now don't confuse this with a Philly cheesesteak as it ain't, but still a darn good sandwich. I asked for mayo (I'm weird like that) and provolone. I would have liked more cheese, so in the future will ask for extra. Still, look at the size of that monster. Easily lunch and supper. The S.O. (Significant Other) went with the sausage parm, in reality, that too should be two meals, but I know him he'll eat the entire thing because just like Mt. Everest it is there. We are splurging this week, but $8 a sandwich is NOT bad at all, it's good to know for future orders that IF we can agree on what type of sandwich to get we can split and be completely full. Because my youngest child, who is in school right now so no need to feed him for lunch, is such a picky eater we went ahead and ordered him supper, spaghetti and meatballs. Now, I am not gonna like, I make a better sauce, but then again I cook mine for 12 hours and what not, but theirs is darn tasty. I wouldn't mind eating it. Their meatballs are good, not dry plenty of flavour. I don't know if they make themselves or if frozen, I do not care as long as it's good and it is (don't tell the little one we stole one to taste). Once again look at the size of this single order, for around $11 (the pasta and sauce 8 meatballs an extra $3) Yet again something me and the S.O. can split between us and be totally full, there are 4 meatballs when ordered, that is 2 apiece. AND look at the cute little crescent roll, which I haven't tasted as do need to leave for the Typhoon this is for, plus I have to eat my own monster lunch. I knew that I didn't want to eat the leftovers that I cooked for supper so I ordered me their hot wings (again trying to get a good sample of things outside of pizza, which the Neopolitan I cannot praise highly enough) so that I can eat those for supper. These are on their appetizer menu, again around $8. Hello, I counted 10 wings, that is a meal not an app, but no complaints. A decent hot sauce and decent meat ratio. Last but not least notice the fries in there, if I had realized how big the sandwiches were I wouldn't have bothered. But didn't want the S.O. to be hungry so did an order. That single order is plenty of fries for two people to split, heck could split with the Typhoon in a pinch, to be fair I eat very few as a side when I have a sandwich so huge to finish. It's good to know that we can spend $10 (hey you gotta tip the cashier for being friendly, patient and just all around a good egg) on lunch periodically to break the monotony of cold cuts for lunch. FYI S.O. gave big thumbs up for the sausage parm, I'm too stuffed from my own sandwich to be able to agree or disagree. Not sure why people complain about the decor. It's clean and simplistic. I was very excited to try this place out as I had heard nothing but great things. And I will say the pizza was very good, but the problem in my experience is that the order was not taken down correctly. I called and ordered the cheese pizza deal on Tuesday night and added half Green pepper and half pepperoni. What I got was half pepperoni and green pepper over the whole pizza. Not a huge disappointment, but when I told the lady at the cash register, she didn't offer to reduce the price. I actually had to pay for one and a half toppings which was an extra dollar or so. Again the pizza was very good, but it may be a good idea to place your order online rather than over the phone. I will definitely be trying it again and hoping the order is completed correctly. read more

It was ok we ordered bbq chicken wings and a medium specialty pizza and a soda but why when the wings came out it had the bbq sauce on the side like it was not suppose to be rolled on the sauce, took back to counter a guy I assume is a cook just said you want me to pour the sauce on, and guess what that just what he did and I have eaten plenty of chicken wings called bbq and the most def had wings rolled in the sauce not poured on. Also the pizza was about the only thing that saved this meal even thou the dough tasted partially undone. Will not be coming back for as much money it to us combo cost it is def not worth it. read more

Pizza was "meh" at best-crust wasn't cooked enough, cheese pizza was basically dough & sauce! Even the kids asked "where's the cheese?", the 3 side salads were awful! This is my spot. Been going here since high school (trust that's been a minute). My dad and I go every Monday for lunch. Love the cheesesteak, our favorite and what always brought me here back in the day and now. The pizza is good too. No gourmet, just good cheesy foldable pizza. Sauce has flavor and crust is perfect. I don't know about the pastas because I honestly want the cheesesteaks or pizza when I come here but I see many people finish their pasta dish quick. Service sucks. Was told 15 min on the phone, waited in line 25 min for takeout, given cold fries and when I said I don't want cold fries, MIKE just threw them away, no offer of fresh ones. The line was out the door when I got there and my food paid the price for the wait. Rude guy at the cash register, no control over the line. I felt like I was in middle school trying to get school pizza, instead of dinner for my family. The worst part the food was not good, and there was a hair in one of my subs!!! Did I mention there was no manager!!!! The worst customer service I had witnessed ever. IP is as good as it gets. Been eating at this hole in the stripmall since a kid in the 80s. Very underrated pizza is their Sicilian square. Wings may be best in Durm. Read the haters if you want to and a walk in will take a while.... but call ahead and place an order...pick it up or eat in and you will not regret it. read more

Italian Pizzeria is an average pizza place. It can sometimes be greasy. There's nothing special about the location or service. Parking isn't terrible. The pizza I get is white pizza with broccoli. There's nothing special about it. It's better than your cheap trash pizza places like Dominos or Papa Johns. If it's all you have the pizza is fine. read more
