If you've ever rolled into Albany late in the evening and thought, "Now where in the world am I gonna get a decent bite?" allow me to point you toward an old standby: Pop's Branding Iron. This place has been holding down the fort for what feels like forever, and walking in feels a bit like stepping into a time capsule where the coffee's hot, the plates are big, and nobody's in a hurry to reinvent the diner. One of my personal favorites is the patty melt simple, classic, and exactly what a patty melt ought to be. My daughter has her own favorite on the menu Monte-Cristo with fries that could probably feed a small ranch crew, That's kind of part of the charm here. The portions are big, the prices are fair, and when a lot of places in town have already shut their lights off for the night, Pop's is still there doing its thing. Now, I'll be honest it shows its age a little. A bit of cleaning and polishing here and there wouldn't hurt. But honestly, that worn-in feel is part of the story. If you're looking for something affordable, old-fashioned, and dependable especially later in the evening Pop's Branding Iron is definitely worth a stop. We love Pop's for that welcoming, relaxed comfort food spot. Settle in and enjoy an old-time favorite. Nothing fancy, but the portions are generous (especially the taco salad). Breakfast (served all day) is my usual go-to here, but I've sampled a few appetizers and bites of food from the dinner menu here and there. The portions are very generous, and considering the prices of food these days, their prices are very reasonable. This is a great spot to eat at if you're looking for a lot of food at a great value. The food and service are about average, but to me, this is all a decent diner really needs to be. A big pro is that they are open late (7am-10pm daily). I recommend that they update their online menu, which advertises serving dishes 24-hours a day, which may confuse some customers. All in all, a good, reliable spot to eat a meal! There's a lot of dining space here, so it's good for both small and larger parties. read more

This place gets five stars just because of its name! Add that you can order anything on the menu at any time of the day and you have a winner! If you want the prime rib dinner for breakfast, you can get the prime rib dinner for breakfast with all of the trimmings you would get normally. If you want an omelette at 7:00 at night you can get an omelette. This place rules. This is good old fashioned stick to your ribs diner food. Nothing fancy the services friendly and helpful and they have a really cool bar if you want to get your drink on. read more

I've never said this before but this place is a dump. The smell of rancid grease hits you when you walk in. (I had to wash the clothes I was wearing when I got home.) Service was surly and barely minimal. Their gravy was the worst I've ever had! It was slightly yellow with no sausage or anything and tasted slightly of cheese. I think they must have just substituted a cream sauce. I am just grateful I didn't get sick. read more

The epitome of your old school diner where food and that means all food is served 24 hours per day everyday. I have been here in snow storms to scalding hot days and yet here they are literally slinging hash for you days in, days out. If for some reason you go away hungry, you simply not an eater. The food we received today was spectacular. The cocktails and drinks, however, were not that great and the waitress we had was terrible - though we did try to take it in stride...some instances of issues were the first server telling us to seat ourselves and then sending a new waitress over with no silverware. We had to get up and get silverware off another set table and then one person in our party decided to ask the waitress who then forgot to get 3 different drinks she was asked for twice, and this happened with at least four or five things. She also kept forgetting what we had, and seemed distracted while taking orders. She put our order on four separate tickets even though we never asked for that, and were there in one party together. So, it was a mixed bag and considering the food was really good that's their saving grace. I have been going to Pop's for 50 years. My friend and I have been going for 30 years. We went on March 24, 2025. They told us to seat ourselves. No offer of coffee, water, or menus. There was only one couple. Two young kids came in after us and were given coffee immediately and offered menus. We never received service so we left. Not one person acknowledged us as we were walking out. I will never set foot in there again. read more

Went in today and was very disappointed. The service was really bad for us. The server was nice but judge me I believe for being colored of skin thinking I wasnt going to tip well or something. Took more than 10 minutes since she drop off our drinks to come and take our order. We were so ready to order but she didnt really acknowledge us. Didnt even offer water refills at all. I always leave $20 tips because I was a server I know when a server goes above and beyond. The food was good. Cooks had the food ready in 5-7min tops. I loved this place before. My daughter and I wanted to try this restaurant to support the local businesses. We walked in and no one acted like they even saw us. We waited while 5 employees were gossiping behind the counter. We continued to wait for another ten minutes and still no response from anyone. We decided to leave and go to one of our favorite places where we knew we would get good service. This restaurant receives a lot of good feedback from the locals so I thought I would try it with my brother. To summarize our experience, Pop's was a disappointment in service and food. Service is slow and the waitresses are surly. It took 10 minutes to get a menu (which we had to find ourselves) and 45 minutes for our food to arrive on a moderately busy late morning. We tried to ask questions about the menu, but the waitress said she never ate there and then proceeds to ask us whether or not we want to order, with the implication that would not be back for a while if we did not order. So we ordered. The food was lukewarm when it arrived. One of our meals was the "popular" chicken fried steak, which was smothered in bland gravy and covered up how thin it was. The hot cake was tough and tasteless. Hash browns were stringy and dry. The eggs were the best item of the meal but were mediocre. Prices are high: the chicken fried steak was $14, eggs $11, and a large hot cake was an unbelievable $4. Yes, $4 for a single hot cake! One of our items never arrived and the waitress never checked up on us after serving our meals. All in all, a bad experience and a place we suggest avoiding. read more

We have been here many times over the years and have always enjoyed our meals. Today, however our experience was poor. The food was fine, but the service was slow. We had to stand and wait to be seated for so long that we almost left to go somewhere else. The waitress finally seated us and got our table settings (she handled the eating side instead of the handles). We got our drinks and the iced tea was too nasty to drink What are they doing different? We have had tea there plenty of times. BUYER BEWARE!! I've been a frequent patron to Albany & surrounding restaurants for about 22 yrs. One of which is Pop's Branding Iron for about the 12 yrs. Been there many times, and have eaten lots of good food. Especially breakfasts. But the last 6 mo things seem to have changed. Upon entering the restaurant, there is a sign which says "Wait to be seated." Turns out nobody seats you, they just want to lay eyes on you then they say, "go ahead and find a seat." That said, I broke with their protocol, and seated myself because no one was available for a few moments,and I knew they would just tell me to find a seat anyways. Well, I was verbally and loudly chastised for simply walking to a booth to sit down. Publicly humiliated is a better description. The attitude was nasty, and the tone was borderline hostile. I've never been treated like that by a waitress in my life, with no apologies and no explanation. Only when I asked another waitress why it mattered so much did I learn THEIR PROTOCOL. Then yesterday, my partner ordered a breakfast. It was clearly stated. A 3 egg over medium, substitute pancakes for hash browns, sausage links and no toast. I sat across from him and heard the whole thing. Somehow, the waitress missed the substitution and instead doubled up on the sausage links. So he had a pile of sausage, and 3 eggs. That's it. Then when we asked about the pancakes, in a resistant tone, she says, well you didn't order them and wanted sausage links. How she twisted that into a pretzel is a mystery. So instead of, saying..."Oh I'm sorry, I will fix that"... we got attitude, and insistence that the error was not hers. Then she brought a single quickly made pancake which normally is 2 (I think) when there is a sub for hash browns. We decided to just stuff it and move on... but really disappointing since we went there specifically to get pancakes. Suffice it to say, I won't be going back ever again. There are too many other good home towny places to eat in Albany, so I suggest you steer clear of Pop's unless you don't mind receiving bad service. read more

Finally made it here after 2 years of wondering. Well it's kinda ok. Nothing really special. I had the chicken fried steak and it was more breading then meat, on the plus side the hash browns and eggs were spot on and done perfect. My family tried this place for the first time and it was a complete disappointment. I drive by and see the parking lot packed which is generally a good sign that it's a good place to eat. The clam chowder tasted like dog water, Cambles out of the can is a million times better. My brother got a tuna melt, he said it was okay, nothing special but edible. My son orders a ribeye steak that was ordered medium and it came out well done, not too big of a deal because he is a teenager and will eat just about anything. I ordered the turkey melt with green chilies which wasn't bad, my fries were a little mushy but I really can't complain about my meal. And lastly my husband ordered a rare steak sandwich. I would never have called what came out a sandwich because it was literally two pieces of burnt bread cut into triangles and a burt hockey puck of a steak. My single star review is not of the service though it's about the food and the establishment. Our waitress was amazing! She was running her butt off by herself with a pretty full restaurant. Supposedly the owner was in the restaurant but did nothing to help our waitress. I am torn about this place. I have always had a decent meal here. Portions are large, and I think fairly priced. The problem is in management or ownership. Either they are ignorant or have turned a blind eye to some of the "weird" aspects of the business. On at least 2 occasions I have seen drug deals take place in the parking lot. No proof what so-ever but I am convinced at least half the staff uses meth or used to use meth. Its just off. Reminds me of the dive bars off of 82nd street in Portland just full of sketchy people, and it feels like a front for an illegal business. But again food is good and cheap. read more

Pops is like Denny's and a old dinner had a baby. They have the feel of an old dinner but are open 27/7 with one big different. Pops isn't that great. I ordered the Up, Up and away waffles breakfast. It comes with bacon or sausage. You can also get it with 2 pancakes vs. 1 waffle. The price is the same $8.50. The food came out and my friend ordered the same as me but with the pancakes. The pancakes were the size of the plate and there were two. When I saw mine, I was like WTF. I had one waffle and it was small. I could have hidden it in between the pancakes. How does one small waffle equal two huge pancakes? To my understanding pancakes use a lot more batter. I felt like I was robbed. Overall nothing stood out. Overpriced and under par. read more
