This place is so pretentious!! I would never go back, the service was horrible. The wine Stewart has apparently has been at Pops for 20 years however he is more interested in chatting with the other staff then serving the bar and other tables. You can easily get the same selection other places and have a staff that is interested in your business. read more

This is one of the great tragedies of Chicago...Pops USED TO BE a wonderful place to hear (actually hear) live Jazz while enjoying fine libations amongst a like minded upscale mature crowd. Every once in a blue moon a renowned jazz artist would pop in unannounced and do a set. Pops had been noted in many publications as a "to do" destination for Chicago. Now?? it is just a bleeping pick up joint where self absorbed twenty and thirty somethings go to "be seen" and see. NO ONE appears to give a crap about the music anymore, which is just as well, because the music is now IN THE BLEEPING BASEMENT in the worst acoustical space I have ever been in. When I went back for the first time to the new location (I had moved out of Chicago a number of years ago for business, but would return every quarter or so and would still go to the "old" Pops when I could), it broke my heart. I was both angry and sad. I hope the owners are at least making a lot of money. What a shame... read more

Pops seems really cool on the outside..but its honestly nothing too amazing. My boyfriend and I went for his sisters birthday, but it was too crowded so we left and went to trump tower for dessert and champagne. I was totally happy with our change of plans. We recently went back on Wednesday night after seeing a show at the Chicago theater. It was much more intimate since it was a weeknight and only half the place was full. This place is great for special occasions, but not when its so packed you are touching elbows with a stranger. It was definitely more romantic sitting on a comfy couch without feeling claustrophobic. The only downside was that there wasn't much of a food menu and the champagne was pretty pricey. We got a bottle on the lower end that was $65. My boyfriend had been to the vineyard recently so he was pleased with his choice, but you are pretty much paying for the trendy atmosphere and location. read more

Went in for the first time with some friends this past Saturday. Pretty busy place, with mostly tourists making up the crowd. Service was fine enough, but somewhat cold and uninviting. The food was nicer than your typical sports bar, but nothing that floored me or was really memorable. Portions were also on the small side. The pork was a little dry. And the liver mousse, which I usually love, was nothing special. I didn't have any cheeses, but the display looked nice at least. Overall, pretty pricey and better food and drink options elsewhere. Would possibly go back for a special occasion, or if my date insisted on champagne. read more

By far one of my favorite hangouts!! but that maybe that's because I love BUBBLES! you will definitely find me here on a weekend with friends, family or even date night with my husband. I have been coming here for YEARS! I always have so much fun here. I highly recommend the Prosecco. Check out the live Jazz downstairs. Hubby gets a big kick out of it, mainly due to his fondness of jazz music and his former years as a sax player. But it's fun for a unique yet romantic date night. They do charge cover downstairs though. Upstairs is more energetic and sceney - but that is also MY scene! This place is a mandatory stop when I have visitors in town - and they all love it too! Seemed like we came here every night the weekend of our wedding this past Memorial weekend - so we were bound to get great service! (especially the bride, I am pretty sure I got a few drinks "on the house" that weekend!) The bartenders and waiters are usually always on their game and know what to suggest. I had been to the other pops when it was open in lakeview but never this one. Went this weekend after dinner downtown and had a good time. It was pretty crowded but can't complain since once we bought a bottle the bartender was sure to save us the next seats that opened up. We stayed for a bit and the bartender were very friendly and attentive. This was a great way to end our night after a fun day in Chicago. (and no I am not a tourist) read more

A friend recommended this place for the food that he had about 2 weeks ago. When we arrived we were upset to hear that the chef had moved on and they were running an abbreviated menu which didn't include about 3/4 of what my friend said was some of the tastiest and least pretentious food he's had in Chicago. I was sad to see that this was the case, but what I ate (from the abbreviated menu) was Delicious! I was equally sad to hear that the new chef was going to be doing what I call clown food (might taste OK, but more effort and money is expended on the appearance or an idea rather than flavor.... I don't understand why everyone on here is complaining about the $$$ price - it is clear before you enter that it will be pricey: champagne bar, servers dressed to kill, upscale atmosphere, on State St. What's shocking about the cost? Go here if you'd like to pretend you're classy for a little bit. It's very fun! Went here on a Saturday afternoon around 4. No wait. We sat at the bar, and the bartenders were extremely nice - they obviously split the tips, and so it's not like you have to wait for "your" bartender. They all circle the bar, help each other make drinks, and serve/remove the glassware as you drink. It was refreshing to be waited on by a team of quality servers. I ordered the "Start Wearing Purple" drink - yum, I was tipsy after one. Next I got the "Black 75" which was good, but not as good the purple. Drinks were $12 a piece...I personally don't find it THAT expensive for a downtown classy bar. This place is not somewhere you'll go to get drunk and eat dinner. It's somewhere to go for a special treat to have a drink or two, pretend you're high society, and then go on to the next place. We were wearing jeans and tshirts and didn't feel discrimated against at all. It's all what you make of it!! I'd go back. read more

This place is somewhat swanky. It's a nice champagne bar but the people there are, well, interesting to say the least. Lots of older people. Not really the best place for a young 20 year old, but who's to say? Atmosphere was cool. Drinks were good. No real complaints, but there are better places to go out on the town. read more

I am really disappointed to write this post and to lose one of my favorite places to have a drink. I have been to pops a few times previously but my visit yesterday will be my last. My sister and I took my mom for a bottle of birthday champagne. The champagne was good, it was our waitress that ruined the experience. She was the most pretentious unhelpful waitress I have ever had. We had a few questions (who wouldn't with a 200 plus bottle menu). She clearly felt like we were a burden to her. I also asked how she learned so much about champagne and she responded with an eye roll and "champagne, the place". Not only was she rude but she also did not deliver the correct appetizers that we ordered. She ruined was was supposed to be a fun day celebrating my mom with her attitude. I have always felt welcome at pops- but after yesterday we will do our celebrating elsewhere. read more

We had a celebration event here this past weekend, and the servers were really nice and helpful, it was a success! Ali helped us coordinate balloons on the table and a champagne toast ready for us when we got there and was always available via email! It's a really pretty atmosphere and the view of the city streets is fantastic. read more

Really cute place. Knowledgeable servers...good recommendations on champagne and cheeses. Def loved their old location in Lincoln Park, but this location is cute too. Charcuterie plate was excellent and a pretty good deal, pick 6 cheeses and meats, including pate for 32 dollars. Will def return when in the area. read more

Awesome spot for a date night or a GNO. Try the cheese curds! They are "light" and flaky. Not overly breaded. Coming from a Wisconsin grad, so I like to think I know a thing or two about cheese curds. Now, getting to the most important part, the champagne. Wide variety of champagnes and wines to choose from. Can get a little pricey, but worth it for a special night out. We loved sitting at the bar, but the bigger booths/couches looked great for larger parties. read more

Awesome staff, that is able to relate to almost every single person that walks through the door. So knowledgeable as well, and it just is a great place to spend an evening; they show their grace, poise, and hospitality constantly; and it's super romantic with a huge sparkling selection at pretty much every price point. Experience was awesome. Great ambience and a nice change of pace. Enjoyed the selection of food and drinks. Big disappointment was the service. The woman serving the table next to us was all personailty, however we had a guy (who may have been a manager) who was useless. Had to call him over numerous times to order drinks and food. Pretentious Vibe: As we entered we were told by the hostess ( in a slinky dress which exposed her tattoos ) to remove our hats. Pretty Classy huh? Champagne is celebratory but this hat rule " popped the bubble" By the way, the last time my wife was there a customer asked to taste a champagne. For a place that continually is on the short list for after-dinner drinks and dessert, I LOVE to go for the 2008 Argyle sparkling and how this place makes me feel like a lady. I came here with a few co-workers for a Veuve Clicquot tasting, and could not have been more pleased. The decor of Pops is definitely comforting and super posh. We were immediately shown to the tasting area, and within seconds had a glass of Veuve in one hand, and fancy shmancy Hors D Oeuvres in the other. The little nibbles they provided us with were out of this world. After mingling for a few minutes, a table opened and we were seated. Everything was amazing. I think by 'tasting' they meant, "We are going to fill your glass up again as soon as you've taken a sip." I wasn't going to complain. They showered us with endless pours of both the traditional yellow Veuve and the Rose. Both of which are fantastic, by the way. We were primarily taken care of by Lamar that night, and I cannot say enough good things about him. He made our experience even more amazing. In all, what started as a mere tasting, turned into a two hour, hard-core Veuve-a-thon. I will most certainly return. read more

Oh Pops of old on Sheffield, how I miss you. I was initially really excited when I heard Pops was moving downtown. But now after trying it a handful of times I remain disappointed. I should've been more suspicious considering how close it is to Viagra triangle. I guess my vision of new and improved is quite different than the owners. If I hadn't known the old location, I'm sure I'd be fine with this place just as it is: beautiful, sleek, expensive. The fact that one reviewer said it was full of older men with younger women really says it all. A great place to take out-of-towners or impress someone. Small, expensive plates and a huge champagne list. But it lacks any charm or romance. It's LOUD, cold, and crowded. Pops used to the be the go-to place for a romantic date, but I can't imagine that now, considering the total lack of intimacy. The servers are inattentive and a little too cool, thereby not very helpful in the champagne selection process. And why should they be? It's so crowded they'll just move onto the next waiting party. Out with the locals and music lovers, in with the tourists and trendchasers. read more

I just don't like this place. I really liked the old Pops on Sheffield and I can't get used to this version. The location dictates a high % of convention attendees and the like, which is not always bad, but given the overall sterile atmosphere of this place, it increases my dislike. I've given this Pops many a shot at love, but it always seems to disappoint. A really good Bellini is usually spoiled by some bad service and a nudge in the back by Randy from Nashville who's making his way through the Botox enhanced crowd double-fisting gin and tonics. read more

Absolutely terrible service. Asked to move my chair from the aisle and the server yanked it out of my hand while I tried to put it away. Later when I had a chair pulled out from the bar, server came over and asked me to move again; when I asked why I needed to move when others were able to pass fine, I was told to leave. The manager came over and had a terrible attitude and frankly was clearly racist. He told me to "get my brown ass out". I will never visit this place again and would urge all other potential visitors never go as well. if you can get past the expensive (and i mean expensive! like $18 for 4-5 ounces of) champagne by the glass and pick out a great bottle of sparking wine this place actually provides you with great value. we ordered a bottle of argyle blanc de noirs (my fave) for like 35 bucks. they also offer snacks but i am not sure if i am impressed. anyway a champagne bar automactically gets 5 stars in my book because when in doubt.... drink champagne. read more
